CINDERS’ TRAGIC TALE Redwings Horse Sanctuary is sending a serious warning to horse owners and firework enthusiasts as it remembers losing a much-loved horse after she was spooked by fireworks last year.

Fourteen-year-old thoroughbred mare Cinders was found unable to walk early one morning in November 2014 at Redwings’ Essex visitor centre. A nearby fireworks party the previous evening had panicked many of the horses. Sadly, the lameness was irreparable and Redwings veterinary team had no choice but to put Cinders to sleep. www.redwings.org.uk/horses-and-fireworks

Quadrille finalists all set for Olympia Four teams are now preparing their routines for Olympia after qualifying at British Riding Clubs SEIB Quadrille Selection Trial, which took place on Saturday 3rd October at Bury Farm Equestrian Village.

The four teams successful in qualifying for the grand Quadrille final at Olympia on Sunday 20th December include Saffron Walden & District RC.

WORLD’S BEST EQUINE CHRISTMAS PARTY IS BACK Olympia, The London International Horse Show, returns to the capital on 15th-21st December with a thrilling line-up showcasing the very best horsemanship from around the globe.

Top riders will include Olympic Gold Medallist Scott Brash and recently qualified 2016 Olympic Show Jumping team Michael Whitaker, Joe Clee, Ben Maher and Jessica Mendoza. The Pony Club A Test, the highest Test within The Pony Club training structure, has seven new holders for 2015 with Alicia Wilkinson from Colchester, Essex being one of them.

Alicia has been a Member of the East Essex Hunt Branch since the age of four, and has qualified for The Pony Club Championships eight consecutive times across a range of disciplines. Alicia said: “I am thrilled to have passed my A Test, and it was my first time too! It was a brilliant day and the examiners made us all feel at ease. I really did enjoy it!”

RNLI rescue horses and riders Volunteer lifeboat crew from Wells RNLI were called out to three horses and their riders who were stranded on an island off Burnham Overy Staithe after being cut off by the tide recently.

The crew, using their ‘Soft-Track’ transporter tractor to light the way, guided the group back to safety on foot as there was now no water in the channel.

Lifeboat spokesman, Chris Hardy said, “The crew are trained for most eventualities, but it is not often you rescue people and animals on foot. Thankfully all ended well and no one was hurt.”

It’s a win for Suffolk's Saffron Baker Codham Park Equestrian in Braintree, Essex was the venue for two Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Second Rounds, both of which were held on Sunday 18th October.

Competitors came forward for both a 0.85m and a 0.95m second round and each starter was aiming to pick up one of the twelve qualifying tickets on offer in each second round for a place at the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships 18th–22nd November at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool.

Solid performances from a number of competitors saw a ten horse jump off unfold and the win came from the very last combination to go. Seventeen year-old Saffron Baker from Ipswich, Suffolk used the draw to her advantage, scooping victory on board Ann Withey’s 13 year-old bay mare, Loulabelle II. Kerrie Goodwin from St. Albans, Hertfordshire took second place with her own 19 year-old chestnut gelding, Roscoes Golani. Young showjumper, 13 year-old Alice Casburn, from Norwich, Norfolk rounded off the podium places on Caroline Casburn’s 9 year-old bay mare Rhydfendigaid Groten Goch.

MTBTG Scholarship Final 2015 Mary Edmundson

WINNER ANNOUNCED The winner of the 2015/16 Mark Todd Bridging the Gap (MTBTG) Scholarship was announced recently.

The six finalists gathered at a private venue in Wiltshire where they were put through their paces in the saddle by Sir Mark Todd and lead MTBTG Coaches, Lizzel Winter and Gill Watson, before being interviewed by representatives from The Mark Todd Collection and Keyflow Feeds. The unanimous winner was Tim Cheffings who is 32years-old and from Tiverton in Devon. The two runners up were Mary Edmundson, from Suffolk and Sam Dempsey.

World Horse Welfare is launching a unique search to find former-racehorse Alfie the perfect loving home where he can continue his specialist rehabilitation and training.

Four-year-old Alfie arrived at World Horse Welfare’s Norfolk Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Hall Farm as part of a pilot scheme run in collaboration with the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) charity. His career on the track lasted only a couple of races before he was deemed too slow and was then rehomed by a lady with limited equine experience who struggled to take care of him so he came to Hall Farm in February 2015 where he began his rehabilitation.

My yard was broken into and had all 8 saddles and bridles stolen, as well as some riding boots, a pair of clippers and smaller things such as bits, numnahs etc. I am doing as much as I can by warning people on facebook and am also going to be going out to tack shops to put signs up and to warn shop staff.

Crowned at Horse of the Year Show 2015

Sunday 11th October was the day of Champions at ‘The World’s Most Famous Horse Show.’

To start the day off it was Maidenhead's Jayne Ross and Broadshard Simplicity who won the Colosso Family Riding Horse of the Year Championship.

The pair successfully defended their title having won the same class in 2014.

“This time I was able to enjoy every minute of it, the horse gave me the most amazing ride, felt fantastic and everything just went perfectly so it was just a joy, a complete joy,” said Ross.

Directly following the Colosso Family Riding Horse of the Year Championship was the Topham

Barnes Show Hunter Pony of the Year taking place in the Andrews Bowen International Arena.

The impressive winners of the class were Sadhbh O'Connor and Valentine Dignity.

The popular Coloured Horse and Pony of the Year Championship sponsored by CHAPS (UK) was decided in style as Allister Hood and Our Cashel Blue were declared the winners.

The combination came forward from the Coloured Ridden Native/Cob/Traditional Horse of the Year sponsored by CHAPS (UK). The striking blue and white gelding impressed both the audience and the Judges to beat out horses and ponies from three other sections.

“I am absolutely delighted it’s such a thrill to win at a big occasion like this and especially with a horse that you’ve bought from virtually unbroken all the way through its career.

He has such a way of going that when he preforms he makes everyone look at him,” said Hood.

The first Championship to be

awarded in the evening performance was the prestigious Rippon Select Foods Supreme Horse of the Year Championship.

This exciting class is the climax to the prestigious ridden showing classes at HOYS. After a suspenseful judging it was finally Jayne Ross and Broadsheet Simplicity who were crowned Supreme Champions for the second consecutive year.

“It’s a moment to savor and we are very lucky that we have had the opportunity to do it.

“It’s certainly a true testament to his ability and his lovely temperament and attitude” The Ruckleigh School Supreme Pony of the Year Championship was the next title to be decided.

The class saw nine of the Show’s champions come forward to try and secure the accolade.

When the final judging came to a conclusion it was Sarah Parker riding Sarum Rembrandt who were victorious. The winning combination progressed from the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain and Moorland Ridden Pony of the Year Championship earlier in the week.

The final Showing title at HOYS to be awarded was the Shire Horse of the Year Championship supported by the Shire Horse Society.

The winner was Metheringham Upton Hamlet handled and owned by Paul Bedford. This achievement was made even more impressive by the fact that this is the second year in a row that Metheringham Upton Hamlet and Paul Bedford have claimed the prestigious title.

Lily Grimwade wins the 128cm Championship in style The first of the National Show Jumping classes on Saturday 10th of October featured the youngest show jumpers of the Show, and some small but mighty ponies in the 128cm Championship.

When the competition drew to a close it was Danbury's 12-year-old Lily Grimwade riding Koda who were crowned the winners.

This was Grimwade’s Horse of the Year Show debut and she made it in style being the only rider to go clear in the jump off.

Grimwade was elated with her win, “I am really surprised and really happy. He has taught me

how to ride basically and I love him so much,” she said.

Second place was awarded to Madison Heath riding Red Alert III and rounding out the podium places was Claudia Moore riding Peppino Il Grande.

Essex’s Hallie jumps to success Fourteen-year-old Southend schoolgirl Hallie Lunn went top of the class with her pony Little Boy De Carman, who is two years older than her, to win the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship.

The combination won a highly-competitive class and their jumpoff time of 36.62 seconds proved just enough to prevail over runner-up Jessica Hewitt, riding Wildwood Silver, while Millie Dickinson, with Ron Burgundy, finished third and Harry Charles fourth on Phoenix VI. "It is such a great experience riding at Horse of the Year Show. It is not every day that you get to ride in such a big arena and watched by such a big crowd.

"I came here to watch when I was younger, and I never thought that I would win a championship here," said Hallie.

A Royale Celebration in the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship Owner Martin Wood had reason to celebrate after his win in the prestigious Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship with his horse

Romanno Royale.

Romanno Royale was led by Simon Charlesworth from Newmarket. The win is made even more impressive as

Romano Royale and Simon Charlesworth in the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship.

Romanno Royale has only done one show this season with this being his second.

“Delighted for the owners, Martin Wood, who sent horses to us to be produced for the first time.

“It is what every breeder or buyer of young horses wants to achieve.”

“It means everything, it’s what everyone works for all year round,” said Charlesworth.

There were four fabulous contenders for the title, with Kellythorpes Oo-La-La being awarded Reserve Champion.

Kellythorpe Stud had an

impressive presence in the strongly contended Championship with two of the four entries.

The Cuddy Working Hunter of the Year Championship displayed incredible talent but ultimately saw Newmarket’s Tim Gredley, ride his sister Pollyanna’s horse, Grand Conan to victory.

“It feels great, it’s a little unexpected, but it’s easy when you have a lovely easy horse like Conan.

“It was lovely to have a full house and under the spotlight it was fantastic,” said Gredley.

Bridgham takes SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Title The International Arena at Horse of the Year Show played host to the cream of the country’s former racehorses that have been retrained for the show ring for the 2015 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship.

The 12 finalists behaved impeccably with manners to burn as they vied for the coveted title, which was clinched by the elegant bay, Bridgham, owned by Paul Rackham and ridden by Sofia Scott, with reserve going to Helen Newbold with Tycoons Reflection.

Bridgham gave Judge, David Froggatt, a super ride and showed outstanding manners and quality to take the top spot in fine style. Trained by Nigel Bloom, he ran in 6 point to points and was placed 3 times before he retired from the track in 2009. A former runner up in this class in 2011, Bridgham has been competing in Lightweight Hunter classes with Oliver Hood for the past few seasons. Sofia is based at the Hood family’s yard in Norfolk and was looking for a horse to do Ladies classes. “I worked in Bridgham for Oliver at a show last year and really liked him,” said Sofia, who has swapped rides this year with Oliver and he is now riding Sofia’s former RIHS amateur winning LW hunter, Patrician. “Bridgham is my absolute favourite, he is such a sweetheart and tries Helen Newbold and Tycoons Reflection

Success for East Anglian riders to give 100% all the time”, she said. The pair won the Ladies at Edenbridge this year and plan to do more Ladies classes next season. “He loves it, and has such a super temperament”, added Sofia.

Helen Newbold produced Tycoons Reflection beautifully to take the runner up spot. By Definite Article, Tycoon is a half brother to Helen’s former SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Champion, Deep Reflection, and were both bred by Mrs C Bailey out of Tudor Thyne. “When the breeder emailed to ask if I would like him, I could not say no”, explained Helen. “We have spent some time allowing him to get stronger but he is an absolute gentleman”. The 10-year-old bay gelding ran 7 times during his racing career, trained by Henrietta Knight and latterly by Mick Channon, but Helen says, “he was too polite.” He has tasted success since turning to the show ring, taking the Champion Hunter title at his first show at Aintree last season. He also qualified for the Royal International Horse Show as a light weight hunter, and for the Retraining of Racehorses final at Hickstead. “He is so similar to Chunky (Deep Reflection). They stand next to each other in the yard and he is just a bit bigger. And they look very similar - they are both dark bay and don’t have a white hair between them. Chunky is such a hard act to follow but he is just amazing”, said Helen.

The twelve finalists came before Judges, David Froggatt (ride) and Jayne Hall (conformation), who agreed that the standard was very high. “It was hard to choose, they were all so well behaved. Not one of them did anything wrong, they were really nice”, said David.

Four riders from East Anglia went through to the SEIB Search for a Star HOYS Finals; Lulus Albal El Ayar was ridden by Cally Humphrey from Great Yarmouth in the riding horse hack final; Wollyday and Kelly Pace from Maldon, Essex also took part in the riding horse hack final; In the cob final Waltham Cross resident, Laraine Taylor and her own Cavalier Jack took part along with Jenny Welham from Eye in Suffolk riding her own, Jays Remembrance.

Now in its nineteenth year, Search for a Star was the brainchild of SEIB Insurance Brokers who still run and support it today. It is exclusively for amateur riders and owners and designed to give these enthusiastic people a chance to compete at the Horse of the Year Show and also to discover new equine talent. I rode from a young age and then joined the Pony Club. My mother hunted as did my grandparents, who also point to pointed. That being said, we did ponies in a very casual way with my brothers giving up very early, leaving myself and one pony.

Riding again at Badminton is my next goal and I would like to go to a few more big events abroad. My aim also this year is to meet the criteria to get onto the GB Lottery funded programs which will help us to be more competitive.

It is very important now that I have other horses coming up behind him to keep my eye in and have a back up to take the pressure off him. I am currently looking for more rides and investing in youngsters to bring on.

What rider inspires you?

Pippa Funnell would be a rider who really inspires me as she is so brilliant with the young horses.

She gives them the best grounding of any rider I know.

She takes the time if they need it, never gets cross and never leaves any stone unturned. She has proved this method by achieving many wins and medals at top level.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

What are your future goals?

Ever since having children my dream has been to come back to competing at the highest level again. When something feels even harder to achieve it spurs me on even more.

With Hexmaleys Hayday we have certainly achieved that this year doing Luhmuhlen CCI**** and Burghley CCI****. He is a horse that I bought as a cheap project when he was 4-years-old.

He was lazy and incredibly unbalanced. Although very uninspiring for the next few years he always loved his jumping and seemed to come home with double clears constantly. I put him on the market as a 6-year-old but had no takers. Thank goodness I didn’t as he has just amazed us with his super braveness and agility. He is certainly no looker but with lots of work and training he is now the 4 star horse I dreamt about producing again.

Do you have any superstitions or good luck charms?

I have no superstitions, although I used to be very superstitious as a teenager but it drove me so mad I had to do something about it. So I decided to turn it completely on its head and I now go out of my way to do all the things that others find superstitious i.e. walk under ladders etc. You make your own luck!

Who do you train with?

Judy Hancock who has successfully ridden around Burghley herself and is now an FEI Judge has been helping me on the flat for many years although I was originally trained by Ruth McMullen and spent 2 years with her as a working pupil. I also had a year with Jane Wallace who was brilliant with the jump training.

We have monthly show jumping clinics at Burnham Market Eventing Centre taken by John Adams who I first met at Ruth’s when I was 18.

This year I have had some inspiring lessons with the very successful Trish Gardiner and she is certainly pushing me to up my game!

and we all work as a team. They have their own horse with them, it works very well as everyone has something to aim towards coming out with a qualification at the end. I believe that working on the job and having practical experiences are invaluable.

There is also another huge bit of the Equestrian centre that takes up a lot of our time which is running Burnham Market Horse Trials. My husband Alec Lochore is heavily involved in the sport organising such events as the European Championships this year at Blair Castle and is a Technical Delegate at many international events including next years Rio Olympics.

What do you do when you’re not riding?

When I’m not riding I do a lot of teaching, which I love. I get huge satisfaction out of it and l love helping people and horses to develop new skills and see them achieve their dreams.

As a family we are very sporty and any free time from the horses is spent perusing other sports ranging from marathons, triathlons, skiing, sailing, hockey, rugby, golf, to name but a few.

What are your future plans?

2016 promises to be an exciting year ahead!

Get the basics in place: Warm rugs for the horses, adequate shelter and making sure you have enough hard feed and supplements to get you through the colder months should be your first priority.

Managing the mud: If the gate area is boggy, try using woodchip or mulch to soak up the liquid and keep it topped up – that way your horses are not standing around with wet feet for too long.

Prepare your stable: If your horse has been turned out all summer your stable might need a spruce up. Give it a good clean with some anti-bacterial stable wash to get rid of any bacteria and dirt before you put down your new bedding. Remember to check the roof for leaks, blocked gutters and even bird’s nests Stay frost-free: Make sure you check water troughs and buckets every day to make sure your horse has access to fresh water.

The results of the latest National Equine Health Survey (NEHS) show that lameness is three times more likely to be caused by conditions such as osteoarthritis in the limb rather than problems in the foot.

The results are consistent with previous NEHS survey findings, showing evidence rather than opinion is now being generated by report, helping owners and experts to understand and improve the health of the country’s 944,000 horses.

Blue Cross runs NEHS in May each year, in partnership with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA).

This year saw a 35% increase in participation compared to 2014, with survey records returned for almost 15,000

The horse’s foot is fundamental to soundness and performance but NEHS results have shown consistently that limb lameness, as opposed to foot lameness, is in fact the biggest syndrome affecting horses. In the latest survey,

conducted in May, a total of 18% were recorded as lame.

13.5% of these were recorded as suffering with lameness such as osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Meanwhile foot lameness was recorded in 4.5% of returns, a similar figure to previous years.

Could you be risking your horse’s health by worming incorrectly?

One in three horse owners are worming incorrectly, which may put their horses at serious risk from encysted small redworm damage, according to the results of the latest National Equine Health Survey (NEHS).

All horses should be wormed for encysted small redworm during November/December, even if they have a negative faecal worm egg count. Nonetheless this year’s National Equine Health Survey showed that 29% of people who thought they had treated for this fatal parasite had unfortunately used a product not indicated to treat for encysted small redworm.

Small redworm are the most common worms found in UK horses and, in their encysted stage, they are potentially fatal.

The problem is that they don’t show up in faecal worm egg counts and they may not cause any obvious symptoms so owners often don’t know their horse has got them.

There are only two active ingredients licensed to treat encysted small redworm: a single dose of moxidectin or a five-day course of fenbendazole.

Resistance to fenbendazole is now widespread in the UK so a resistance test is recommended before using it.

The Equisal tapeworm test, based on a simple to take saliva sample, is already changing how we control and treat tapeworm in our horses.

The test has only been available for about eighteen months but to date thousands of our Westgate customers have chosen to test and treat accordingly rather than blanket worm once or twice a year in traditional manner.

Some interesting discoveries are being made. We are finding that approximately 25%-30% of horses have tapeworm infections needing treating, rather lower than used to be thought. All the others don’t need worming for tapeworm so why dose?

Some horses who have had regular tapeworm doses in the past still come up positive in the test.

Reiver, a 6-year-old Highland pony was one of these. His annual praziquantel wormer had

easily reinfect from the pasture.

Worming advice is always changing as new information becomes available. The best advice for tapeworm control is to use the Equisal test every six months and only treat the horses who actually need it. t is really important to look after your horse’s core, whatever discipline you do, as it will allow your horse to carry you more easily and will help to prevent injury.

These two exercises are from the ‘Yoga Patterns’ I do every day with every horse at the beginning of each session to wake up the muscles through the core and pelvis after walking on a long rein for five to eight minutes. I do each exercise four times, two each way for one and a half rotations. They also will improve your contact and finesse your communication with your horse. Your horse’s walk may also improve as he becomes more elastic through his body. The transitions between the higher frame and the stretchy neck are where the magic happens.

start riding a 10-8m circle with the rein short enough to have a connection to the horse’s mouth. Once you have established bend and direction around your circle, allow the horse to gradually take the reins away from you in a forward and down direction while maintaining the bend.

You need to make sure you ride the circle line with your body, keep the walk energetic and guard the quarters with your outside leg. After a circle and a half, re-establish the contact down the rein and change direction and repeat in the other direction.

Troubleshoot If the horse doesn’t stretch the rein away from you or shoots his head in the air, just shorten the rein again and try again, this time massaging the corner of the lips a little with the reins as you let go.

lifting the back. You want to be able to feel every step individually.

Most horses will start to drop their heads as their core muscles engage. This is the time to encourage your horse to increase the stretch over his back by allowing him to take the rein forward and down, away from you while turning.

Once you get a nice response from the horse, walk forward on a long rein out of the exercise and praise him. Pick up the reins again and have a go the other way.

This is the final result from these exercises, a really relaxed, supple, stretching, powerful free walk.

roteins are made up of many building blocks called amino acids.

There are 22 amino acids and some of these are known as essential amino acids (must be provided in the diet) or non essential amino acids (these can be made by the horse itself). In the horse essential amino acids are Lysine and Methionine.

Essential amino acids must be present in the horse’s diet in order for optimum muscle function, cell renewal and tissue repair and growth.

The amino acid most likely to be deficient in the diets of growing horses is Lysine. Various researchers have done a great deal of work to determine the requirement for lysine in growing horses. This research has shown that horses fed diets deficient in lysine will grow more slowly than horses fed a diet high in lysine, even if the crude protein percentages of the diets are identical.

Studies at the University of Florida suggested that the second limiting amino acid for growing horses may be threonine. Yearlings fed maize, oats, and soyabean meal diets along with the local coastal bermudagrass hay grew faster with additional muscle gain when threonine was added to the concentrate feed at a level of 0.1% of the cereal mix.

To ensure an adequate supply of essential amino acids to ensure optimum muscle function, health and development you need to look for feeds that contain good levels of quality protein sources and you can identify these by looking at the feed label. Quality protein sources contain the essential amino acids. Raw materials that are high in quality protein include Soya bean meal, alfalfa, linseed and peas.

Typically stud and youngstock feeds e.g. Level Grow Mix, convalescing e.g. Re-Coup 11 and conditioning feeds e.g. Show Improver Mix would have higher inclusion levels of quality protein sources than a feed used for maintenance.

Very often horse owners tend to be more concerned about the protein % inclusion, which is wrong as a high protein % maybe made up of poor quality sources of protein! Feeds containing quality protein sources will also need to be fed at lower intakes.

Cereal grains are lacking in lysine and therefore are considered to be a poor quality protein and if you

were to feed your horse a diet containing predominantly cereals and restricted quality protein sources you would find that no matter how much work you put in to your horse, the development of muscle tone and topline would be very difficult and growth rates reduced. In summary Quality protein intake in conjunction with exercise is known to cause a muscle building effect by stimulating the release of hormones that are concerned with the uptake of amino acids by the body’s cells. Potentially, the more amino acids that are taken up the more protein is produced and the more muscle is laid down.

Caution Exceeding horse’s protein intake will not build twice as much muscle or make a young horse grow twice its size and excessively high protein intakes can have a detrimental effect on your horse’s respiratory health and hydration status. Horses cannot store excess protein and have to break it down by a process called deamination, which produces ammonia or urea which is excreted. FIBRE Horses have evolved to utilise a high fibre diet, using bacterial fermentation in a highly developed large intestine. However, modern feeding practices such as feeding large grain meals, and suppressing natural foraging behaviour is often at odds with the healthy function of the gastrointestinal tract.

Low levels of fibre, or poor quality fibre in the diet put horses at serious risk of problems such as colic and gastric ulcers. Leaving horses for long periods of time with nothing to eat can also lead to serious digestive and metabolic disturbances.

For most leisure horses and those competing at lower levels, up to 100% of the energy needs can be supplied using fibre, but as a rough guide, at least 70% of the horse’s diet should consist of long-stem roughage such as HorseHage.

Interdressage is an online video based equestrian competition website where BRC members can compete for their club or centre simply by supplying a video of their performance. There is no need to travel away from your yard or riding school, all that is required is an arena or level grassed area, and someone to capture the competition entry on camera.

Two years ago Team Quest rocked the dressage world. FIRE! FIRE! FIRE TOPS THE AGENDA AT THE BRITISH HORSE SOCIETY’S SAFETY CONFERENCE

Insurers, vets and fire professionals team-up to deliver fire safety advice for horse owners and equine businesses The impact of fire on the equine community was the hot topic for The British Horse Society’s Safety Conference which was held recently at The Royal Veterinary College.

Nicki Whittaker, an Equine Specialist at NFU Mutual who spoke at the conference said, “We would urge people to ensure they have the correct insurance, fire prevention measures and evacuation plan in place, so they are properly prepared if the worst happens.”

Also speaking at the conference was Professor Josh Slater from the Royal Veterinary College and a founder member of the British Animal Rescue and Trauma Care association who spoke about the devastating effect that smoke inhalation has on horses trapped in a fire.

“Unlike humans, horses will automatically raise their heads during a fire to try and establish an escape route. This means that

they are breathing in toxic smoke and super-heated gases which cause irreparable damage to the lungs and trachea.

“Experts estimate that there is a four minute window from the fire starting to the horse suffering smoke damage that it cannot survive. This makes it even more important to ensure that anyone responsible for horses has a clear fire prevention and evacuation plan in place and that the evacuation plan is regularly rehearsed.”

Steve Foye, from the Chief Fire Officers’ Association, who headed a team of fire and rescue specialists at the conference, welcomed the opportunity to share important fire safety messages through the BHS conference: "There are simple measures anyone who owns a horse or equine business can take to prevent fire in the first place and to protect themselves, their horses and their business if a fire occurs.”

Lee Hackett, Director of Policy at The British Horse Society said, “Fire can cause devastation in almost any situation but at

equestrian premises the risk is greatly heightened by the huge quantities of flammable materials.

“Too often we hear horrific stories of loss, damage and death involving horses and stables so it is a priority of the BHS to do all we can to prevent fire and protect our members.”

PPPI Horse owners and equine businesses are being encouraged to use this as a memorable way to prevent fire and lessen its impact if it does occur: PREVENT - make sure you have adequate fire prevention measures in place. If in doubt talk to your local fire safety officer PLAN - have a fire evacuation plan in place and remember to PRACTISE it on a regular basis INSURE - having the correct insurance in place can help your business recover from the economic impact of a fire.

Hacking out in the

Winter Months Whilst it is important to continue to hack your horse throughout the winter months, it comes with added risks due to the poor light.

Here www.equestrian.com look at some top tips for staying safe: High visibility clothing should be worn at all times when hacking, whatever time of day or year. A fluorescent jacket, waistcoat or tabard with reflective strips should be worn by the rider. Hat and leg bands are also available. A fluorescent, reflective exercise sheet is a good idea for the horse and is multi-purpose in the winter as can also keep the chill of them. Reflective brushing boots, tail bands and bridle accessories are also available to ensure the horse is made as visible as possible.

If the weather is bad, assess the conditions on the road or on your hacking route before setting out. Icy ground can be particularly dangerous for horses, as can snow. If the conditions look poor, don’t risk hacking out, but if it looks safe ensure that you still take extra care to avoid taking your horse on unsuitable footing.

whole range of emotions flowed through me as I waved on the other two riders, not wanting them to risk their own race for the sake of ours, which now meant I was on my own in the middle of Mongolia with no idea of where my fiancé was or whether she was safe…

Earlier in the day things had been going well. Sarah and I had galloped away from camp on Day Four of The Mongol Derby, officially the longest and almost

certainly the toughest horse race in the world, traversing 1000km through Mongolia. The horses we’d been given for the leg were incredible, not only were they breathtakingly fast, but the way they placed their feet amongst rocks, hillocks and Marmot holes was beyond belief. We even let the thought enter our minds that, on steeds this fast, we might be able to regain some of the ground we had lost on Day Two, when Sarah’s horse had decided it wanted to walk the entire 25 mile stage.

But once we’d slowed down and joined two other riders, I made a major mistake, I forgot for a

moment that the horses we were riding were still semi-wild. As we stopped briefly to graze the animals, I casually shifted my foot so Sarah could check whether my girth was tight enough. The moment my boot touched the horse’s side it did a huge bronc, catching me totally off guard and sending me flying over its head.

As I hit the floor I had a split second to decide whether to hold on to the horse’s lead rein and risk serious injury, or let go and potentially lose the horse. I decided the latter, but instantly regretted it as I watched in

disbelieve as, complete with all my gear, the horse span on a six pence and galloped back the way we’d come. Without a second’s thought Sarah asked, “should I go after it?” And still slightly in shock I said “yes” and watched her disappear in a cloud of dust.

Twenty minutes later and there was no sign of Sarah, or either of the two horses, and I was starting to get worried. At the breakneck speeds Sarah had shot off at, a broken leg would probably be a 'best case scenario’ if she fell and my only connection with the

arital test outside world was an emergency button on my tracking device, which all racers where obliged to carry. A few minutes later though, which felt like hours, Sarah appeared on her steed. She explained she’d nearly caught my horse but after the chase entered

a forest, and a close call with a low hanging branch, she’d decided things had got too dangerous. I couldn’t bring myself to call for help though and we decided to walk back for a bit and hope my horse had stopped to graze, offering a potential chance for me

to remount.

To say I was running on adrenaline when we got into that evening’s camp would be an understatement.

When the adrenaline had subsided however, and I had a chance to reflect on the day, my overwhelming feeling was that of pride; not with myself for surviving, but with Sarah for the way she unquestionably put her own life at risk to recover my horse.

By far the worst bites I had ever seen, later in the week they would leave the entirety of Sarah’s hamstrings black from bruising, but not one word of complaint ever left her lips. vulnerability that forms an important part of our relationship was still intact. Sarah had been suffering, as many people on the race had, with digestive discomfort, but on Day 6 was riding a particularly frisky horse she was understandably keen not to dismount until we reached the next camp. Whilst she managed to grit her teeth for more than 25km, eventually she had to ‘quickly alight’ and, whilst still holding onto the reins, let nature take its course. Whilst I didn’t really think anything of it, it clearly affected Sarah and her morale and when we arrived into camp tired and exhausted 30 minutes later, she shed a few tears – there was clearly a line she hadn’t wanted to cross.

The ride wasn’t just about difficult times testing our relationship’s strength however and there were beautiful moments we shared which will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Of the breath taking

sunsets we saw, inspirational nomads we met and stunning horses we rode it was an encounter early on the ride that I will remember most fondly. On the first night of the race we didn’t make it to an official camp and instead spent the evening with a local family, whose hospitality I will never forget; as they cooked us dinner in their small ger, looked after our horses and made room for us to sleep. As we rode out of the valley, where the ger was located, the following morning I looked over at Sarah galloping across a picture perfect meadow, with the sun rising behind rolling hills, and felt totally at peace with the world; if I can replicate that feeling just a few times in our marriage I know it will be a very happy one.

Doing the race together has not only given Sarah and I an experience we will share forever, and acted as an incredible test of our relationship, which I think we

passed with flying colours, it’s also the first time in my life, so far filled with personal tests and challenges, that I've been able to truly answer the question ‘am I strong human being?’ My own personal hang ups and inhibitions will never let me self-congratulate or acknowledge my own achievements too much, but having lived the world’s hardest horse race alongside my fiancé, seen the hardships she went through, and the incredible determination she showed in doing so, I know I must have ‘done alright’ to complete it alongside her! So only one question now remains for us… what next?

BRIDle The simplest form of bridle is the snaffle which consists of a headpiece and throatlash, browband, cheek-pieces attached to the headpiece, a noseband, bit and reins.

The headpiece has the throatlash attached to it and also the fastenings for the cheek pieces.

These lay flat against the horse’s cheeks and attach to the bit at the bottom. When assembling a bridle, the browband should be put on before fastening the cheekpieces. It attaches to both sides of the headband and sits above the cheekpiece straps. When fitted on the horse, it should be long enough to not pinch the back of the ears or cause rubbing behind them.

If a noseband is to be worn it slides through the inside of the browband and underneath the headpiece and is fastened on the left hand side usually. The side straps sit just in front of the cheek-pieces, whilst the actual noseband, if a cavesson, should lay about two fingers breadth below the prominent cheek bone to avoid rubbing. Some modern bridle styles have the noseband fitted over the top of a padded headpiece or attached to extra straps on the headpiece with a buckle each side.

Reins should be attached to the bit and if the fastenings are billets they should be secured on the inside, but if (conventional) buckles, these should be fastened on the outside.

This is the same for all fastenings on the bridle.

On a simple snaffle bridle, there are a number of different bit options to choose from but they are mainly based on a few primary styles.

These are the loose ring, eggbutt, D-Ring or full-cheek with either a straight bar, jointed or double jointed mouthpiece.

Besides the simplest cavesson, there are different types of noseband that can be used with a snaffle bridle or with other, stronger bits. The drop noseband sits lower than the cavesson, with the back strap sitting under the bit. This is designed for horses that open their mouth or cross their jaw. Care must be taken to avoid fitting the noseband too low on the nostrils as this will interfere with breathing.

Alternatively, the flash noseband can also help prevent a horse from opening his mouth and consists of a cavesson noseband with a thinner strap attached which fastens around the horse’s nose. These three nosebands are dressage legal.

The grackle noseband is useful for stopping the horse crossing his jaw, with the lower strap fitted like a flash strap and the top one sits diagonally across the horse’s cheekbone, forming a ‘figure of eight.’ Another type of grackle is the Mexican or High Ring grackle where the top straps are attached to rings which sit close to the eyes on the flat part of the horse’s cheeks.

Moving on from the snaffle bridle, the double bridle has two bits called the curb and the bridoon (which is a snaffle bit with smaller rings). A curb chain attaches to the curb bit and lays in the horse’s chin groove.

Two sets of reins are used, one for each bit and the top rein which attaches to the bridoon should usually be thicker.

This type of bridle should only be used by experienced riders who have the skills to effectively utilise it.

A double bridle should only be used with a plain noseband, but different styles including padded and crank can be used and can also come in different widths to suit the horse.

Carleton Riding Club Walk and Trot classes up to Medium. Showjumping runs from 12:30pm onwards with 50cm, 60cm, 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 1m classes.

It can be a challenge to fit in such a big range of dressage and jumping, but we think it is important to keep the easier classes for the novice members but always have the more advanced classes for our experienced competitors. Gosh, where do I start. We have won 14 Area Events and 4 National Championships! And additionally we have come second, sometimes beaten by a millisecond a further 8 times at Area and National Championship events, as well as second in the

EUTHANASIA: PART 2

Hardest decision...

WE CONTINUE OUR TWO-PART SERIES ON EUTHANASIA...

T

he method used to euthanase a horse should be given careful consideration before the event. There are a number of options available, each of which has its own pros and cons.

If the horse is to be euthanased by a vet, the vet should be consulted as to their preferred method.

Lethal Injection A lethal injection can only be administered by a veterinary surgeon and will consist of an overdose of anaesthetic drugs. In most cases a sedative will be given before the fatal dose. Shortly after the anaesthetic injection the horse will fall to the ground, where the vet will monitor its pulse until it has ceased.

The use of a lethal injection has implications for the disposal of the horse’s carcass.

Animals that have been euthanased by lethal injection cannot enter the human food chain and should not be used for animal food.

Free Bullet A veterinary surgeon or trained and licensed professional may dispatch a horse using the free bullet. Consequently, this is the method used by knackermen and hunts. A single bullet is used in the vast majority of cases and is

placed in the centre of the horse’s forehead, just above the eyes.

Abattoir An equine abattoir is usually the cheapest way to euthanase a horse as owners will normally be paid for the horse’s carcass rather than having to finance the procedure themselves. However, abattoirs are not an option for every horse as many will have been signed out of the food chain (this information will be included in the horse’s passport) either at the wishes of their owner or because they have received certain medication during their lifetime.

Where?

In an emergency situation there will obviously be no option as to where the horse is euthanased.

However, where feasible, it is useful to plan ahead in order to make the process as straightforward as possible for the horse and people involved.

If the horse is to be

euthanased at home rather than, for example, at an abattoir the site of the euthanasia should be carefully considered. If the horse is to be buried (and the relevant permissions for this have been sought and granted) it is wise to ask the vet to put the horse to sleep as close as possible to its intended grave. Providing there is sufficient time available the grave should have been prepared prior to the euthanasia.

If the horse’s body is to be collected (for cremation for example) then it is prudent to euthanase the horse at a site that is accessible to motor vehicles. In all cases, where it is possible, the site of euthanasia should not be cramped or confined for the sake of the safety of those involved.

However, if the horse is to be euthanased by lethal injection and has a distinctly strong relationship with another horse (such as a mare and foal or close pair bonds) then it may be appropriate for the other animal to be permitted to witness the process. The vet should, however, be consulted as to whether this is permissible.

Under no circumstances should the welfare of the horse be compromised in order to move it to a convenient site for euthanasia. It is helpful to plan ahead and make things as straightforward as possible, but in an emergency these plans will need to be abandoned.

Disposal After the horse has been euthanased, the question of what to do with the body remains (except if the animal has been taken to an abattoir). Carcass disposal can be very expensive.

Removing the body from the site of euthanasia is not an easy process and may be distressing for those who have been involved with the horse during its lifetime.

Thus it is wise for the owner to leave the site before the body is removed. Vets are often willing to assist in arranging for a carcass to be removed.

Burial European legislation prevents the burial of any horse that has been used as part of a commercial enterprise. When a horse has been kept solely as a pet it may be possible to bury its carcass, but it is essential to seek permission from the Local Authority (usually via Environmental Health) before

Zola was only 6 when we got him, but on the year he turned 9 he started to change. He wasn't able to take off on any stride like he used to and he wasn't as keen with his jumping which he had always loved. Within a week he was diagnosed with navicular in all four feet and arthritis. I made the decision to turn him out in a field where he roamed happily for 6 months, but the day came when it was time to say goodbye as he began to struggle. I miss Zola everyday, but I’m so grateful for every day that I got to spend with him.

Group cremation is usually considerably cheaper than individual but an individual cremation does give the owner the option of having some, or all, of the ashes returned.

National Fallen Stock Company The National Fallen Stock Company (NFSC) offers its members assistance with the collection of animal carcasses and ensures that any collection of stock arranged through it is fully compliant with relevant legislation.

Hunts and Knackermen Many (but by no means all) hunts offer euthanasia (by free bullet) and a collection/disposal service, although it is important to note that this may not be available immediately in an emergency situation.

Should you be present?

This is a question only you can answer. Many people feel that they want to be with their horse in its final moments. However, the horse will be in the hands of a professional who has been there many times before and they are the best person to deal with the situation. The process can be distressing and there is no shame in not being present.

Yorkshire man Robert Walker is at the top of his game in the showing ranks. Together with his wife, Sarah, they have produced many successful show horses, including hacks, cobs, hunters and riding horses.

Robert’s talent in the show ring was first properly noticed at the age of 17 when owners started sending him their horses.

Winning the Hunter Championships at the Great Yorkshire Show for the first time is Robert’s most memorable showing moment.

He has amassed numerous wins and championships at the highest level and is a true showman who is hugely knowledgeable in presenting the show horse in the ring.

ingcraft is the art of presenting and showing off your horse in the ring to allow the best possible chance of impressing the Judge. It is a skill that must be acquired by the rider in order to maximise their success in the ring.

Show riders should aim to make an instant impact and create the best picture possible for the Judge. Robert says, “You are being judged from the moment you step into the ring so it is important to immediately catch the Judge’s eye and make a good impression.” As well as emphasising all the horse’s good points it is important to try and improve or hide the horse’s bad points.

The outcome of the class depends entirely on the Judge’s opinion which is based on a sound knowledge of the requirements for each showing class. However, different Judges place differing emphasis on criteria such as breed, manners, correctness of conformation and way of going.

Therefore the end result may depend on what the Judge is looking for on the day.

Part of the ability to be triumphant in the show ring is to campaign your horse where he will most be suited. It is important to know who will be judging and what they might like. Your horse’s success depends on your ability to
