parenthood | CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Chiropractic care during pregnancy Many women around the world are realising the benefits of regular chiropractic adjustments as they prepare for safer, easier birthing for both themselves and their babies. By Mariza Halliday

parenthood | CHIROPRACTIC CARE

T

he purpose of chiropractic care is not the treatment of conditions or disease; instead, it is the restoration of normal bodily function. Chiropractors work with the nervous system via gentle spinal adjustments. They decrease areas of tension or stress in the spine, which then affects the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves), thereby enhancing overall bodily function. All the systems of the body — circulatory, digestive, eliminatory, hormonal, glandular, immunological, muscular, reproductive, respiratory and skeletal — depend on the optimal function of the nervous system. Many women choose to use chiropractic care to enhance and optimise their health and to ensure that the birthing process is as comfortable and complication-free as possible. Being pregnant is tough, the body goes through many changes and a well-functioning spine and nervous system is essential. While all licensed chiropractors receive training related to pregnancy,

some chiropractors specialise in prenatal care and further their training to specialise in their respective fields. “Not all chiropractors are the same, so finding the ‘right’ chiropractor for you and your family is important. There are chiropractors that have received additional training to work with pregnant women and children. I really recommend interviewing any potential chiropractors before making an appointment. Your mommy instinct will know right away if you have found the right practice for you and your

THE BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE DURING PREGNANCY INCLUDE: • Relief of pain and discomfort in the back, neck and joints • Reducing labour and delivery time • Reducing instances of breech position and the need for a Caesarean delivery • Reducing the risk caused by restricted space in the uterus due to a misaligned pelvis • Generally maintaining a healthier pregnancy • Reduces interference to the mother’s vital nerve system, which coordinates all body systems and functions

28

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

family.” says Dr Chantel da Silva, registered Chiropractor MTech (Chiro) at Rise Chiropractic. Even once the baby has been born, chiropractic care can play a vital role in returning mothers to normal health. Properly aligning the spine, neck and back will give the central nervous system the kickstart it needs to bring mothers back to a more comfortable and normal state. Giving birth puts a lot of stress on the body and can misalign many areas. Correcting these issues helps mothers recover far better and faster after childbirth. Having the central nervous system back as it should be gives a mother the freedom to focus on her new child as opposed to the pain or discomfort she feels from her birthing experience. If you are an expectant mother, chiropractic care is something you should consider when thinking about the health of not only yourself but your baby too. Chiropractic treatment gives you and your baby the best way to come through the birthing process in the healthiest possible way.

Top 5 tips TO HELP YOUR FAMILY GO GREEN By Mariza Halliday

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

31

parenthood | ECO MOM

A

s parents, we always try and teach our children valuable lessons that will mould them into well-rounded adults. One of the most important lessons we can teach them is responsibility and compassion. Going green as a family not only teaches both these important lessons through leading by example but also have so many incredible benefits for your health and the environment. Learning how to go green may be as simple as using paper instead of plastic, cloth instead of disposable diapers and making your own eco-friendly cleaning products. Either way, it is never too late or too early to start. It might sound a little daunting,

32

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

but you won’t believe how easy it really is – especially if you follow these 5 easy tips:

impact of your diet; going meat-free just one day per week will make a huge difference.

EAT LESS MEAT In South Africa, we raise more than one billion farm animals for food every year, and it is no secret that livestock accounts for most of the greenhouse gas emissions. Raising animals for food contributes to dangerous climate change, land environmental degradation, water pollution and water shortages. You don’t have to go full vegan to reduce the environmental

MINIMIZE WATER USAGE An estimated 50% of all household water usage is wasted. It goes down the drain while we wait for it to warm up or it disappears through leaky faucets and pipes. During a time when our fresh water supply is diminishing due to pollution and drought, it’s important to conserve all the water we can, as well as implement greywater recycling practices wherever possible.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that livestock production is responsible for 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, while other organisations have estimated it could be as much as 51 per cent. World scientists on the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) agree that we need to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 80 per cent by 2050 to avoid catastrophic climate change.

parenthood | ECO MOM

Our water supply is not infinite, and we must all make changes in our lifestyles to lower our impact on the environment. Some of these changes can be as simple as placing a bucket in the shower to catch water, taking shorter showers and turning off the water while brushing your teeth. USE NATURAL CLEANING PRODUCTS The harsh chemicals in many conventional cleaning products can wreak havoc on the environment, especially when they seep into the ocean, lakes and rivers. Rather choose cleaning products with natural and biodegradable ingredients. This is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for your health. USE LESS ELECTRICITY It is important to cut carbon emissions and lower your energy consumption as much as possible. This can be done by installing solar panels, turning the lights off when you leave a room, installing energy efficient light bulbs as well as insulating your home and purchasing eco-friendly and energy

saving washing machines, fridges and televisions. Not only will you save money on your electricity bill, but it also goes a long way towards a greener future. STOP USING SINGLE-USE PLASTIC Plastic pollution is a tremendous problem. Our oceans are brimming with plastic waste that never disappears but breaks down into micro-plastics, which are nearly impossible to get rid of and cause a myriad of significant ecological and health issues. According to Eco Watch, we currently dump the

equivalent of one garbage truck per day into the ocean every minute. It is predicted that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans. Stop using plastic and opt for recyclable glass instead. Say no to plastic straws, grocery bags, takeaway coffee cups and other items by bringing your own reusable items instead. Every moment of every day is a new opportunity to make a different decision and start cultivating a new habit. Starting a more eco-friendly practice in your home presents an excellent opportunity to start the conversation surrounding the importance of environmentalism.

parenthood | VIRTUAL SAFETY

How to

protect your kids online Don’t avoid going online because of fear, follow these actionable tips from absolute mama to keep your kids safe online. Read more here. By Taryn Dekel

T

he online world is an amazing portal to entertainment and education, but it is also the gateway to predators, pornography and other bad influences. We look at how parents can become tech-savvy to protect their children, big or small, from the dangers online. As parents, you’ll do anything to protect your children, but before you delete your social media accounts and go offline completely, take a look at these online safety tips to see how you can protect your children from online child predators, inappropriate content, identity thieves and cyberbullies.

36

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

parenthood | VIRTUAL SAFETY

EDUCATE YOURSELF The first step to protecting your children online is to educate yourself. While you might be used to calling on someone more tech savvy than yourself, you’ll have to do a little digging and become more knowledgeable about the ins and outs of internet settings to protect your family. Being proactive is one of the best ways to avoid uncomfortable and dangerous situations. While your children might be technologically advantaged, they often lack the emotional maturity to evaluate risk. SAFETY FOR TINY TOTS With younger children you have the advantage, you get to control their online activity completely by either limiting it or limiting their access. Choose between allowing usage with supervision only, restrict their access

or purchase a device specifically aimed at young children which automatically limits access. Downloading a toddler app with password control is another great way to control access, without the password the child stays in the app only until you disable it. SAFETY FOR TWEENS AND TEENAGERS Here’s where things get a little tricky. Very often our kids are smarter than us when it comes to technology, so we must think outside the box when trying to keep them safe from harm. Besides the curious nature of those wanting to discover their sexuality via pornography, we also must factor in online predators who are using fake identities to lure children in or to get hold of personal information. First and foremost, have an open

dialogue with your children about their activity online. You can put every measure in place, but if you do not have an open line of communication, this could lead to your child endangering their physical or emotional safety and being too afraid to talk to you about it. Children between the ages of 10 to 15 can make use of a ‘family computer’ set up in a public space where privacy is limited. While your child might argue for their right to privacy, stick to your guns for your peace of mind. For older teens, help them understand privacy. They can still participate actively on social media, but they should not treat it as an ‘online journal’. Show them how to be selective about the types of images and content they share online. Follow your child on social media and address any issues with them in private. Embarrassing them online with a ‘mom comment’ might just lead to them creating a duplicate profile that you’re unaware of. Avoid the ‘check-in’ option as these posts are public and can be used to track users online. Caution your children to delete or block anyone that ridicules them or makes them feel uncomfortable. The internet is a breeding ground for keyboard warriors and online trolls who can wreak havoc on self-esteem. FOR FINDING THE PERFECT AU PAIR By Mariza Halliday

parenthood | AU PAIR 101

I

t is never easy entrusting your child’s wellbeing in the hands of someone else. There is so much to take into consideration when hiring an au pair, and if you are not prepared, it can turn into a full-time job quite quickly. While the search is not always easy, we’re sure you agree it’s worth it to find the ideal companion for your little ones. Here are some of the top tips to make sure you find the perfect au pair. ALWAYS CHECK REFERENCES, ESPECIALLY THE FAKE ONES When you call a reference, don’t reveal the au pair’s name from the start. Ask the person to give the name of the au pair who worked for them in the date range that was provided, if they say the correct name, ask them for more details like “How did you find her? How old were your kids back then? How long did this au pair stay with you? Why did she leave you?” Once you feel that the story checks

42

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

out, start asking your questions about her capabilities, reliability, etc. Another thing you can do is go look the au pair up on Facebook, see if the listed references are friends with them on Facebook, what their relationship with them is (if they are). CHECK THEIR DRIVING RECORD & SKILLS If driving is required, make sure that you inquire about their driving record. Ask direct questions about practical experience and past accidents. You are placing the lives of your children into the hands of an au pair every time they step behind the wheel… make sure you feel comfortable with the person you choose. SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE AND USE AN AGENCY Use a reputable agency to source some good, reliable candidates. Try and avoid sourcing candidates using just the internet or a job-recruitment

website. Security comes first! A good agency will also complete any necessary background checks and be able to match you up with candidates that are best suited for you. A MOTHER’S INTUITION Our intuition is the most accurate and powerful tool we have in our arsenal. Moms, you just KNOW when something is not right. You are not going crazy, you are hearing your intuition, and nothing beats it. Don’t doubt yourself when you feel alarm bells ringing. When this happens, it’s done, close the book, don’t ask questions, the person wasn’t right, move on. Your intuition is right. Every. Single. Time. Even when all the reference and background checks are free of alarming incidences. Always remember that there are many good candidates out there and you should never have to settle. Rather be safe than sorry.

Tea to the rescue By Mariza Halliday

T

ea can be a delicious and calming beverage, no matter what season you are in. Tea can be enjoyed hot or cold, and its benefits go far beyond refreshment. There is plenty of research out there that shows that drinking certain kinds of tea can improve your health and wellbeing. Certain herbal teas are known for their medicinal values and can treat several ailments naturally. Here are some of the most common herbal teas, and what you should be using them for:

Green Tea: One of the lesser

processed teas and very high in antioxidants. Green tea’s antioxidants may prevent the growth of certain cancers, prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce the risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels. One of the greatest benefits of green tea is its effects on healthy cell growth which have widespread advantages for our bodies, inside and out. It also has a relaxing effect on the body and mind.

58

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

White tea: It has the highest

antioxidant properties. One study showed that white tea has the most potent anticancer properties compared to more processed teas, it is also anti-bacterial and very low in caffeine.

WHAT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS

Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals, thereby leading to chain reactions that may damage the cells of organisms.

Oolong tea: often the tea of

choice for weight management and is known to help alleviate skin conditions. A word of caution – oolong tea can be very high in caffeine, so if you are sensitive to caffeine, drink in moderation.

Chamomile tea: Chamomile is one of the world’s most popular teas

Peppermint tea:

Perhaps one of the best teas you can drink when you are suffering from bloating, gas or general stomach cramps or pain. Peppermint relieves muscle spasms and is also great for nausea and vomiting. Peppermint will also warm up the body and make you sweat, so it’s good for removing toxins from the body. Peppermint tea is widely used as an appetite suppressant and acts as a decongestant.

Ginger Tea: Ginger has many

amazing healing properties. When it comes to allergies and colds, its natural antihistamine is unrivalled. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory abilities

can soothe the stomach, relieve sore muscles and lessen the strength of menstrual cramps. Going on a boat? Drink ginger tea to ease motion sickness. And of course, we are all familiar with ginger’s natural kick, which makes it a great flavour booster even in small amounts. Whether you are a tea-lover or novice, give these amazing teas a try and reap the benefits.

(makes about 12 tarts) Ingredients • 6 egg yolks • ¼ cup castor sugar • ½ tsp vanilla essense • ½ cup fresh double cream • ½ cup full-cream milk • 250 g frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed • Cake flour for rolling pastry

Pasteis de Nata (Egg Custard Tarts)

absolute mama | SPRING 2018

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200 °C and grease a mini muffin tin. 2. Place the egg yolks in a large bowl. Add the castor sugar and whisk well together. 3. Add the vanilla essence and whisk well to combine. 4. Add the cream and milk and whisk again to combine until the mixture is frothy. Strain the mixture through a sieve. 5. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry into a tight log until about 3 cm in diameter. 6. Trim the ends and then cut the log into 12-mm-thick slices. 7. Using a rolling pin, roll one of the pastry rounds into a 60-mm circle. Place the pastry into a cavity of the mini muffin tin and press to flatten the dough against the bottom and sides of the cavity, extending slightly above the rim of the pan. Repeat with the remaining dough. 8. Pour the egg mixture into each pastry cup until it’s almost filled. 9. Place the tarts in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes. The tarts should rise and form a very dark brown skin on the surface. 10. As you take the tarts from the oven, jiggle them a little. If the centre of the tarts look set, then they are done. If they look as if they still contain too much liquid, leave in the oven for a while longer.

Becoming

Michelle Obama

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America – the first African-American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, whilst establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it – in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations – and whose story inspires us to do the same. or as long as I remember my Dad worked shifts. The morning shifts were best as we had the afternoons to spend time together but when he worked the other two we’d just pass each other in the hallway. But that’s what you did back then, you worked whatever you were given to be able to provide for your family. I had it easier than most, some fathers worked in entirely different cities, coming home for a few weeks once every 6 months or so. This didn’t mean that I didn’t miss him, it just made the limited time we got to spend together much more precious. It also taught me some very valuable lessons, such as being an adult sometimes sucked as you had to work both nights and weekends and that time is the most precious commodity we have.

go crazy, we might just make it. However, I wasn’t giving up bringing home some bacon entirely, it’s just that I would be doing it from home for myself while raising our kids and swopping the obligatory khaki pants and blue shirts for jeans and vintage rock t-shirts. (Living the dream dudes, … living the dream). It’s been said that no man is an island and that it takes a village to raise a child (or an idiot). That is most definitely true because I don’t do this in isolation as my wife is very much part of the picture, as are the boys’ grandparents and even some extended family. Being able to spend valuable time with our two boys is priceless. So what if I do the shopping, or the laundry, or even the dishes, it doesn’t make me less of a man and no, I don’t keep my testicles in a jar by the door either. I

It’s more like the season finale of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, it’s extremely messy with lots of tears and danger lurking around every corner With the advent of the internet and e-mails, we can be more flexible with how we work and where we work than say twenty, thirty years ago. That’s why as soon as my first-born arrived, I decided to become a house husband, telling my then boss and his associates to stick it where the….. I’m joking, you never burn bridges, no matter how tempting it may be. My resignation wasn’t a splitsecond decision, we did the calculations to see if it could be possible. We realised that it would be tight and if we kept our cool and didn’t

have them mounted on top of the fireplace for all to see, along with my signing carp (I love that guy! Take me to the river … what a hoot!) and the head of some random numbskull who condescendingly called me “Daddy Day Care”. Besides, it’s nothing like that movie, not in my house. It’s tough and scary and this is coming from someone who has been in the military and seen Slayer – twice! It’s more like the season finale of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, it’s extremely messy with lots of tears and danger lurking

around every corner, like fields of unexploded Lego just waiting to pounce and bring a slew of muffled screams to the unlucky individual. Most days though, it’s like I’ve wandered into the middle of a Monty Python skit. The one with the parrot that is no more. Me: Right, so you want clouds (cauliflower) and trees (broccoli) with your dinner? Them: Yes please, Dad! Me: Ok, here you go. Them: What’s this? Me: It’s clouds and trees... just like you asked for. Them: No, we didn’t. Me: Yes, you did! Them: No, we didn’t. Me: Yes, you did! Believe me, this can go on for hours... the parrot is well and truly dead. One thing I never appreciated before is the amount of time Mums (and now a growing pool of Dads) spend behind the wheel. There’s the initial school run, followed by a shopping run, then home to do some work. Then there’s the afternoon pick-up followed by not one, but two extra-curricular runs as they both have different interests, then home to cook dinner before my wife comes home. I feel like one of those Ice Road Truckers, resplendent in a John Deere baseball cap and flannel. I wouldn’t give it up, not one single aspect of it. I learn far more from them than I think they ever will from me. Just their sheer exuberance and unbridled optimism is a tonic to my most cynical of hearts, and I love how completely binary they are, right or wrong, good or bad with absolutely zero shades of grey. I try and teach them what I think will be useful for them based on my years of knocking around this planet, which is not a lot to be honest, because as I’ve said before, it takes a village to raise an idiot, and that idiot is always me.

CAR SEAT laws, regulations and best practice

Currently we are faced with a lot of confusion in the public space and on social media with regards to car seats. Lines easily blur between the law, what regulation stipulate and best practice. Let’s shed some light on this crucial topic for the safety of our most prized possessions, our children. By Peggie Mars

motoring | SAFETY FIRST

THE LAW

A recent visual survey by the Automobile Association revealed that a staggering 93 percent of children are not strapped into the safety or booster seats they need to survive a crash.

In South Africa, the National Road Traffic Act stipulate that children under the age of 3 must be in a car seat. Children between the ages of 3-14 or 1.5 meters tall must be in a car seat if one is available. In the event you don’t have a car seat available your child needs to be strapped in with a seatbelt. The Act requires that all car seats be appropriate and correctly certified but doesn’t specify where the seat must be installed or whether a seat must be rear or forward facing. It is illegal to travel in a car REGULATIONS with a child under Car seat regulations set a minimum standard three years old that is to adhere to and in South Africa we adhere to not strapped into regulations ECE 44/04 and 129, or I-Size as an approved set out by the European Economic safety seat. Community. These documents address every aspect of the car seat including the size, width of the harness, the strength of the buckle, the material the seat is made of, the operators manual, the procedures of testing and much more. This sets the bar for all car seat manufacturers and they always issue an orange sticker on the seat to certify it has passed all their standards. Baby or infant seats can only be rear facing and with a weight limit of 13kg or an age limit of 15 months.

BEST PRACTICE

The driver is In best practice, we go above the Traffic legally responsible Act and the ECE Regulations in the for any child under interest of the safety of our children. It the age of 14 not is best to have your child rear facing for using a seatbelt as long as you can and there are some in his/her car. car seats which are certified to do this till 25kg. The safest place to install your seat is on the middle seat at the back but unfortunately there isn’t always a 3-point seatbelt available on that seat, second best option would be to put the littlest child behind the passenger seat. Car seats can be quite pricey and we aren’t always able to attain the best suited seat, but you can rear face your child till the upper weight, height and age limit. It is advised that children under the age of 14 ride at the back, but this isn’t practical most of the time. A child can be seated on the front passenger seat as long as their car seats are correctly installed, and the airbag is turned off. Between the Road Traffic Act, the ECE Regulations and best practice, we must find a happy and legal medium that works for us, for our children and our vehicles. The safest seat is the one that you can afford, that fits your vehicle and child and that you use correctly.

All you need to know about the

ISOFIX SYSTEM

WHAT IS THE ISOFIX?

The international standard for attachment points for child car seats as well as defining that standard attachment points be manufactured into cars, enabling easily and safely compliant seats.

IDENTIFICATION

An alternative to securing a child car seat with seat belts, usually indicated on a label near the ISOFIX bracket. Compliant car seats will have ISOFIX clamps that will attach to the ISOFIX in the vehicle. Clamps are usually at the bottom of the seat or on the base of

the baby seat. The ECE label will tell you that it is a Semi-Universal seat.

ANCHORING

ISOFIX only provides 2 points of contact and a third point is required for a safe installation. The clamp on the bracket becomes a hinge during a crash and that is why the third point of contact is required.

SUPPORT

The ISOFIX must be used in conjunction with a back tether strap, a load leg or a shield that braces against the backrest of your vehicle. Either one

THE ANCHORS Cars with ISOFIX have two anchor points (metal bars) found between the cushion and backrest of the seat. All cars manufactured since February 2013 must have this type of connecting point on at least two seats.

IDENTIFICATION

ISOFIX

ANCHORING

Check your vehicle manual to find out if it is equipped with ISOFIX. It is probable you will also find an ISOFIX logo or label.

The third anchor point for the ISOFIX system. A safety belt secures the lower part of the backrest of the CRS to the rear of the backrest of the car seat or even to the vehicle’s trunk. This upper anchor point is on the floor of the trunk or on the rear part of the vehicle’s bench seat. Once the car seat is installed, hook the Top Tether onto the third ISOFIX anchor point. Tighten and test the indicator to see if there is sufficient tension.

An ‘ISOFIX base’ is required for rear-facing child seats. This way, it avoids using the seat belt. First the base is clipped onto the ISOFIX anchors and then the child seat is secured to the base.

This is the alternative to the Top Tether. It is used with Group 0+ and 1 child seats, both in rear-facing and forward-facing versions. The leg extends until it rests on the floor of the vehicle. At the correct height. Next, check to ensure it is stable. A brace shield is sometimes used in rear facing seats. Check the vehicle manual to ensure it can be installed with no problems.

How do you secure a child with ISOFIX anchor points? Hook the rigid extensions or metal clips found on the lower part of the rear of the child seat to the vehicles two anchor bars. A ‘click’ and a green line indicates that it is correctly secured.

TOP TETHER

ISOFIX BASE

SUPPORT LEG

of these will diminish rebound during a crash and thus protect your child’s head and neck. In a crash, there is a benefit to a seat belt installation due to the slight movement of the seat. The slight movement absorbs crash force and prevents it from feeding through to your child. ISOFIX is considered safer than a seatbelt installation due to its ease of use, thereby eliminating incorrect installation issues. Check your car seat manual to confirm that your installation is correct. Make sure you double check the installation for firmness before each trip.

LOWER TETHER

Another type of anchor that also prevents rotation. It is designed for rear-facing CRS. It does not have a specific anchor point. Slide the front seat forward until the runner is exposed. Next, pass the tether around the runner or around one of the seat legs. Repeat the process with the other tether on the other runner.
