M-M-M-MY CORONA

A satirical entry into our resident Dad’s diary

Editor’s letter No amount of preparation can make grief any less significant and the finality of death can feel unbelievable, particularly when it strikes your nearest. My Mom-in-law left us in summer, just before autumn started and thus, she missed winter, but she left for a life where she will forever have spring and summer, never experiencing any pain, hardship or loss of anything. She lived an extraordinary life. She met the love of her life in the ‘80s and would’ve celebrated 31 years of marriage this year. She was Mom to four naughty boys and was blessed with 6 grandchildren who she loved dearly. She was strong, loving and passionate, always caring and giving to the less fortunate. She had a love for nature and wildlife, which she passed on to all of us and was also the only person that I ever met that could wear leopard print and always pull it off. The pain of losing her has been so complex, the loss of her support, guidance and love, leaves an emptiness and pain that feels impossible to heal to all who knew her or met her along the way. We’ve cried and will cry some more but we find comfort in knowing that she lives on in all the beautiful memories she left us. Absolute Mama would like to dedicate this issue to all those fighting cancer and to those we have lost. In this issue, we take a look at beauty

fashion & beauty | COLLAGEN

Fountain of Youth Collagen, a longstanding health and wellness trend, is excelling in the market with new and improved products that have already hit our shelves… A ‘trend’ can sometimes imply a short lifespan, but in this case, we’re certain collagen is here to stay, and for good reason. BY LAUREN ZUIDEMA

The basics Collagen is an essential protein in the body. Our bodies naturally manufacture it, with its main component being connective tissue, including skin, muscles, and tendons. Its most important function in the body is to provide structure and strength to our skin and bones. There are a few foods that we can eat to increase our collagen intake, like bone broth, fish and chicken, but a more focused approach would be to invest in collagen powders and boosters as part of a daily regime to

22

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

see the real health benefits associated with this powerhouse supplement. Most collagen supplements come from bovine or marine sources, but it’s good to know that vegetarian/vegan collagen supplements and boosters are increasing in popularity, perfect to consider for any lifestyle.

The benefits As we get older, our natural production of collagen begins to slow down. Adding collagen to your regime to replace what you

lack can see wonderful overall health benefits. Collagen may help reverse the signs of ageing by smoothing wrinkles and boosting skin elasticity. Supplements may also help improve gut health by levelling out gut inflammation. It’s been known to help ease joint aches and pains by supporting connective tissue in the body. Bone mineral density decreases with age, especially after menopause, and collagen can help with this, too, by stimulating bone formation. The list goes on.

Lift, Sculpt and Shape your Skin with these

5 NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Sure it’s tempting to turn back your skin’s clock with a face-lift overhaul that takes years off in one fell swoop, however there’s gentler and highly effective route to happy and healthy skin. Lift, sculpt and shape with these far less invasive and innovative procedures. BY HELEN CLEMSON

A

s they gain more traction – after all, our skin is the body’s largest organ and its health is imperative – non-invasive skin procedures, particularly antiagers, mean a plethora of preventative and restorative treatments. Why the soaring popularity? High patient satisfaction;

26

think instant results with no downtime and far less discomfort than surgery. And even if you do opt for a treatment like a chemical peel or micro-needling, the skin’s reaction means a day or two at home – and healing isn’t a lengthy process. So what’s the buzz? Here are five non-surgical facial anti-agers for the face and body to help lift, sculpt and shape your skin beautifully.

fashion & beauty | LIFT, SCULPT & SHAPE YOUR SKIN

ONE: THE COCKTAIL PEEL

Think transformation comes from knives, needles and surgical threads alone? Just by cocktailing (or layering) the right acids in the form of chemical peels, you’re able “to stimulate more advanced cellular renewal and collagen contraction,” explains Dr Judey, a biomedical scientist and CEO of Biomedical Emporium. In other words”. You expose your skin to different ingredients at extremely high concentrations at once,” she adds; but this isn’t for first-timers as it may be too intense for the skin to handle. It’s All About the Blend To lift, sculpt and shape skin, Dr Judey recommends a cocktail peel with AHA’s and BHA’s (Alpha-hydroxy Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acid). In other words, a treatment with Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid. “Mixing the aforementioned with Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) just takes it to another level,” she reports. And for best

28

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

results, aim for a cocktail or layered peel every five to six weeks.

Top Tip: Dr Judey also waxes lyrical about the power of micro-needling. “It’s an absolute must to combine with layered peels especially with the use of hyaluronic acid. This treatment densifies skin texture and improves elasticity profoundly,” she says.

TWO: THE MICRO-NEEDLING PROFESSIONAL PEN

While we’ve come a long way since radical procedures where only scalpels reigned supreme, minuscule needles in your anti-ageing treatment (hello micro-needling!) mean the creation of microchannels in the skin. This a good thing! “This perceived trauma causes the release of growth factors that stimulate the production and formation of collagen and elastin,” says somatologist Cynthia Dold of Cynthia’s Skin Wellness. “This is known

as Collagen Induction Therapy,” she adds, “resulting in tightening, lifting and rejuvenation of the skin.” Red in the Face After your session, be prepared to go home (you may not feel entirely comfortable to go out in public). However, downtime is minimal, explains Cynthia and you’ll see the full healing benefits (in up to three months) over time. “Skin cell turnover is increased; this leaves the skin firmer, improves skin elasticity, restores skin volume and leaves the skin more youthful.” Other advantages include reduction of pigmentation, enlarged pores and acne scarring, she adds.

Top Tip: Don’t feel despondent that there isn’t instant gratification with micro-needling. The initial healing response leaves the skin plumper, contributes immediately to reduce visible signs of ageing by smoothing lines and wrinkles and rejuvenating

other treatment modalities such as Radiofrequency, Nd:YAG skin tightening laser and Titan laser.

FOUR: THE TOP-TO-TOE LASER SKIN TIGHTENER

the skin, explains Cynthia. Also, think of it as a process. “When completed regularly, it’s a cost-effective antiageing treatment that yields both immediate and long term results,” she reports. Bank on a course of six treatments, and for optimal results, you’ll need to have a session every four to six weeks dependent on skin conditions and desired results.

THREE: THE HIGH-TECH

FACIAL

Fans of facials may still love the traditional “steam-and-cream,” – until they meet its bigger, more powerful, tech-inspired sister, the HydraTouch facial from Skin Renewal. “The HydraTouch Facial is an excellent ‘step-up’ treatment, if you have been doing facials for years, but want that extra effect,” explains Dr Maureen Allem, founder and medical director of the Renewal Institute, a general practitioner with a special interest in

aesthetic procedures as well as integrative and anti-ageing medicine. The main purpose of the treatment is to gently exfoliate dead skin cells (increased cellular turnover), giving you a smooth texture, she says. Tools of the Trade The treatment then also combines two other modalities; electrophoresis (“whereby we infuse the skin with Hyaluronic acid to increase hydration levels”) and Faradic. “Faradic works on muscle contraction and stimulation in the facial area: think of it as going to the gym and strengthening your body muscles - this will have a similar effect on the facial muscles,” says Dr Maureen.

Top Tip: It’s all about prevention over cure. “Its best suited for preventing sagging and lax skin, rather than treating it.” If severe lax or loose skin is your issue, Dr Maureen suggests combining a HydraTouch facial with

From London to Cape Town, the NIR (Near Infra-Red) laser has arrived on our shores (at Pulse Dermatology and Laser) with promises of building the skin up, helping shore it against future ageing, as well as working on areas of the body we’d like to perhaps tighten post-kids like the abdomen. It’s reported to work wonders on stretch marks too. “Near Infra-Red is the type of light emitted during your skin tightening treatment,” explains Amy Knoetze, a medical aesthetic therapist and founder of Pulse Dermatology and Laser. “The treatment uses a safe infrared light that heats the skin and the tissue immediately under the skin’s surface,” she says. This heat stimulates the infiltration of fibroblast and the formation of new collagen, while also tightening the existing bundles of collagen and elastin in the skin. “The “double” stimulation both thickens and tightens the skin, strengthening the natural “scaffold” that gives our skin structure. This not only improves the skin’s appearance immediately but also helps to bolster it against future ageing. The presence of healthy collagen in the dermis helps maintain the skin’s youthful resilience and texture.” Full Body Need a full whammy, time-saving procedure? As this treatment is especially good for lifting and tightening, opt for it if you’re struggling with a postpartum tummy. It can be used on the face and neck too, and is even good for helping to eliminate stretch marks.

Top Tip: As it’s one of the few lasers that’s completely safe on all skin types and has no downtime, definitely go on a date night with your partner the evening after treatment. Appointment-

wise, Amy recommends two to fourweek intervals with treatments ranging from three to 12 sessions depending on the severity of the condition.

FIVE: THE RADIOFREQUENCY BODY SMOOTHER AND SCULPTOR

No matter how well you eat or how committed you are to Pilates and yoga, body skin issues like cellulite are

hard to shift. Enter the Exilis Elite Radiofrequency, a treatment that works by gently heating the targeted area to increase blood flow and circulation explains Dr Maureen. “By increasing circulation, various biological processes are activated.” This means cellulite can be improved due to the increase in toxin removal via the lymph system, she goes on to say. “For adipose tissue (fat pocket),

the radiofrequency has the ability to increase the metabolism of the fat cells, forcing them to release their content (in turn excreted through the lymphatic system), thus shrinking and eventually destroying them.” Let it Flow Other benefits of increased circulation? This together with increased blood flow to targeted areas means stimulation of the fibroblast cells, says Dr Maureen. “These cells, situated in the dermis, are responsible for the production of new, healthy collagen and elastin, which results in skin tightening and an overall smooth appearance of the skin.” That equals a more sculpted physique.

Top Tip: Good news is that from as little as three sessions, you’ll start seeing results; however, for ultimate effects, Dr Maureen recommends a course of between six and eight treatments, done every two weeks. “We also recommend combining Radiofrequency with other treatment modalities for quicker, more drastic results and these may include Carboxytherapy and Mesotherapy performed using a lipolytic solution.”

parenting | ADOLESCENT SLEEP

The Science of

Adolescent Sleep We can all remember the struggle to wake up in the morning as a teenager; it was just so difficult to get out of bed! You might be surprised to hear that there is a scientific explanation for it after all. BY MARIZA HALLIDAY

W

e far underestimate the importance of sleep and at some point, it has become commonplace to consider those who sleep in or go to bed early, to be lazy and not as productive as someone who is waking up early and keeps going until late into the night. Sleeping is far from laziness and research has proven that consistently getting the right amount of sleep is very beneficial to our mental and physical health and will make us more productive. Getting enough

sleep leads to: improved brain development, better memory and better-regulated emotions – meaning less stress and more energy. It also has vast physical benefits such as an improved immune system.

WHY DOESN’T MY TEEN WANT TO WAKE UP?

In the case of adolescents, it seems like all they want to do is stay up late and stay asleep long after everyone else has woken up, but scientifically their brains are just not wired for early rising at this stage in their lives.

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

33

parenting | ADOLESCENT SLEEP

Research has shown that around puberty, adolescents experience a variety of developmental alterations from changes in the brain to different patterns in metabolism and most noticeably, a delay in their circadian rhythm or internal clock that is partly caused by a shift in the release of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin starts to be released at around 2-3 hours later than the average for adults or younger children – meaning that teens are only starting to feel sleepy much later than they did before as children. This makes it very difficult to be able to go to sleep at bedtime, leaving enough time to sleep for the recommended 9 hours before waking up again in time for school.

34

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS NO JOKE

Adolescence is a period of dramatic brain development, particularly in the parts of the brain that are responsible for those higher-order thinking processes such as reasoning, problem-solving and good judgment. Not getting enough sleep generally means that teenagers are not getting the type of sleep associated with learning, memory consolidation, and emotional processing. This could lead to reduced concentration in class and poor school performance. Research shows that roughly 1 out of every 10 teenagers is getting the 8-10 hours of sleep per night recommended by sleep scientists and paediatricians. So, it is not

surprising that teenagers are known to be moody and irritable, apart from all of the other changes they are dealing with, they are also not getting enough sleep! Dr. Lara Smith (MBChB, DCH, FCP), a Paediatrician at Copperfield Childcare Practice in Cape Town explains that “Teenage behaviour is more complex than just a result of sleep deprivation, due to all the biological changes that occur, but lack of sleep will certainly impact and aggravate some of these behaviours.”

WHAT CAN TEENS DO TO IMPROVE THEIR SLEEP ROUTINE?

Some lifestyle changes could help with sleep problems:

parenting | ADOLESCENT SLEEP

Try to stick to a routine Try to set a sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time every day. This helps the body’s natural clock to become accustomed to the preferred time to go to sleep. “Try to limit any daytime naps to a maximum 20min”, says Dr. Smith, “and partaking in healthy extracurricular activities will also certainly help”.

36

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

Cut down the late-night technology Light exposure from mobile devices and TVs could disrupt circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Dr. Smith recommends limiting screen exposure from at least 1 hour before bedtime. It is also advisable not to have any screens in the bedroom. Cut down on caffeine at night Caffeine not only affects the amount

of sleep you have but also the quality of sleep. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to 12 hours, so the best way to avoid it disrupting sleep is to cut down on any caffeine intake from lunchtime onwards. So, there you have it - teens do have a scientific reason for wanting to sleep in, but the good news for their parents, they should grow out of it eventually.

With every passing year, it becomes more evident that our little ones are growing up in a changing world. It is not just COVID-19 that has brought about this change, but the introduction of technology from a young age, our change in lifestyles, the lack of opportunity to play outside or the freedom to spend hours at the park, to name a few. Simply, our children are not benefiting from the exposure to activities that promote the positive development of perceptual skills as they once were. So what, you may ask? Studies have shown that, “Perceptual skills are the highest predictor to literacy success and provide children with the ‘data’ they need in order to discriminate, recall, blend and segment syllables and words. These form the cornerstones to developing sound literacy skills and productive readers and writers down the line.” (Kieran Gray nee: Mardghum - Ba(STA) Honors (Wits).

PERCEPTUAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN A CHANGING WORLD WHAT ARE PERCEPTUAL SKILLS AND HOW DO THEY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT? Perceptual skills can be broken down into two main groups: auditory and visual perception. The development of these skills require the brain to break down information it receives from the ear or eye. It is not the physical ability to hear or see, but rather how what is heard or seen is interpreted by the brain. The ability of the brain to correctly interpret this information is crucial for learning to take place. “Children learn and develop by what they hear and what they see. Enhancing the development of these skills at an early stage can only set them up to succeed later in learning skills like maths and reading, where these developmental skills are essential”, writes Mrs Raeesa Bulbulia - BscOT (Wits).

WE HAVE IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM At Kyalami Preparatory Nursery School (KPNS) we have noted the global trend toward more children requiring additional support from an occupational or speech therapist. This is due to gaps in their perceptual skills development. A speech and occupational therapist can assist a child to develop neurological pathways in their brain in order for it to correctly interpret messages sent from the ears and eyes. While these therapists have an important place in our schools, we have taken a proactive and innovative approach in the classroom to support and bridge the gaps in developing our children’s perceptual skills.

practise their skills throughout the day, doing what children do best - play!

OUR PLAN OF ACTION Weekly lessons to combine elements of both visual and auditory skills are intentionally prepared and taught during class. These skills and extensions are then practised throughout the week to reinforce the concepts our children have learnt. Our therapists have created a COVID-19 friendly programme so that our children do not miss these crucial skills during these unpredictable times.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL IN IMPLEMENTING THIS PROGRAMME? Our goal in implementing this programme is to ensure that every child is given the opportunity to develop, implement and practise these vitally important perceptual skills before beginning to read and write, reducing the need for therapy in years to come.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! We would love to tell you more about our Perceptual Programme and introduce you to our wonderful teachers implementing ‘Look, Listen, Learn’. If you would like further information, please contact, Tammy Odendaal, or the therapists involved in developing this programme by using the details below:

AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION At KPNS, we have created a Perceptual Programme (called, Look, Listen, Learn) to develop our children’s perceptual skills from the ground up. This programme has been specifically designed by experts in the field, an occupational therapist (Mrs Raeesa Bulbulia) and speech therapist (Kieran Gray nee: Mardghum), to take our children right back to the basics of perceptual skills development and build their knowledge, understanding and skills, layer by layer. Each age group has a graded programme designed to ensure that every pre-skill required for reading, writing and numeracy is taught and practised with the intensity of a therapy session, by our trained teachers. The two components, auditory and visual, work hand-in-hand when learning takes place and are integrated into classroom activities based on physical activities and a hands-on approach to learning. It is important that our children do not use these skills in isolation, but incorporate and

When parents push

TOO HARD, OR NOT ENOUGH Your desire to give your child the best start can become the thing that gets in the way. How hard should you push your child to succeed? BY CELESTE STRYDOM

P

arents have never been more socially conscious. We speak of reparenting ourselves. We hope to raise our children more sensitively than our parents. Most of our lingering childhood scars were not intentionally inflicted. Our parents had tried their best. With this in mind, are our own best intentions taking our children’s desires & capabilities

into account? or, are they paving the way to feelings of inadequacy and pressure?

START WITH YOURSELF

Think back on your childhood. Perhaps your parents expected you to become a doctor, like your mom; or, maybe you showed promise as a dancer, and can’t understand why they didn’t nurture and encourage your talent.

parenting | STRIKING THE BALANCE

Was there unreasonable pressure to perform academically or socially?

HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS TOO MUCH?

Some children thrive on pressure. Others crumble beneath it. You must consider your children’s personality. What are their interests and strengths? Pushing a bookworm who hates sport into a rugby club to introduce them to team dynamics is probably not the best idea. A book club might be more appealing, while still ticking off some of the lessons you hope they will learn. Inspect your motivation for nudging your children in a specific direction. Do we want them to achieve this for their benefit, or is it something we want for ourselves? If the answer is the latter, perhaps you need to let it go. Candice Warner, Child and Family Therapist and Mediator at The Care and Contact Centre in Cape Town, says that parents should be aware of signs that they might be applying too much pressure. Candice explains: “Children who are pushed too hard may become defiant and oppositional toward the parent, school, or society at large.” At the same time, she says: “Children who are not pushed enough might be at risk of feeling as though their parent does not care. This can impact on self-confidence, making it hard for these children to overcome tough obstacles later in life.”

“IF I CAN SEE HER, I CAN BE HER” THE IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE SOUTH AFRICAN FEMALE ROLE MODELS FOR TODAY’S TEENAGERS

M

ost women over the age of 30 have difficulty naming a handful of positive female role models from their childhoods who were in the public eye. It was slim pickings and those of us who were lucky enough to have positive female role models in our mothers, extended female relatives and teachers, or in our communities, looked to them for guidance. But, even today still, not all young girls have these influences around them and must navigate through their teen years and into womanhood without much direction.

Positive female role models in general have the potential to shape the way girls perceive themselves and influence their outlook on life. When girls see women filled with selfconfidence, a love for life and accepting themselves just the way they are it has a trickle-down effect. Not only do girls start believing in themselves, but the self-confidence they’ve gained also leads to a healthy and positive body image. This means that they are less prone to succumb to social media pressures and are less susceptible to bullying in real life as well as online. Girls can read about the journeys of real South African women as they tell their stories of navigating their paths in predominantly maledominated industries such as brewing, shipbuilding, aviation, sports and more in Despina Senatore’s guidebook for teenage girls, Soar!. “These women are inspirational, they are mentors; and they have the potential to provide hope and motivation to girls in every corner of our country, dreaming and working towards being the best versions of themselves whilst trying to survive the murky waters of being teenagers,” commented Senatore. Soar! showcases 50 careers including actuarial science, firefighting,

coding, different types of engineers, work in film and hospitality to name a few and from the perspective of young SA girls who share their personal stories. It also includes mindfulness exercises to help girls cope with school stress and the everyday pressures that come with being a teenager. Purchase your copy of Soar! at www. purposefulwoman.co.za/online/ for R150 (excl. delivery) or if you are a LO teacher or Career councillor reach out to Despina on her website www.purposefulwoman.co.za to discuss how Soar! can be incorporated into your lesson plans.

STRIKING THE BALANCE

Encouraging children to do things that challenge them will teach determination and broaden their perspective. The Care and Contact Centre encourages connection and attachment. “When parents are effectively connected to the child, they are in a prime position to enforce discipline and set boundaries.” “Listen to your children without feeling the need to respond. Help them build realistic expectations and set goals to give them a sense of autonomy.” Being able to tolerate healthy levels of discomfort is an important trait. Encouraging children to try something more than once, even if it wasn’t their greatest hit will allow them to practise perseverance. Something that they initially thought was horrible, might grow into something they enjoy. Just remember to keep listening. Children might be averse to something because it’s not their thing, or as a result of bullying or depression.

SHIFTING THE FOCUS

Candice reminds us, ‘When you see your child pushing back, refocus the relationship. It’s about connection, not correction. Instead of telling a child, you’re proud of him or her, you might instead suggest. “You must be so proud of yourself!’ This minimizes the expectation that the child should live up to the parent’s standards, and instead focuses on what makes him or her feel accomplished.” The important thing to remember is that your children need you to be their parent. What is needed isn’t a light touch, but the right touch. Being actively present from the start allows you to raise children who are capable of self-discipline and self-discovery. When demands for achievement interfere with the parent-child relationship, sit back and remember that you are not the coach. Rather, you are the mentor.

B

efore you get squeamish about all the talk of needles, you may want to read this. The benefits offered by IV vitamin therapy should be enough for you to get over your phobia. The practitioners of this

increasingly popular wellness offering say that the method beats taking vitamins orally because it goes directly into your bloodstream. By bypassing your stomach, you get better absorption of the nutrients, and they hit your system immediately, without having to go through your

digestive tract. Administered via a drip, the saline solution, infused with vitamins and minerals, is sent straight to the cells in your body. A swallowed vitamin has to break down in the stomach and digestive tract, which results in 20-30% absorption. If the vitamin is given through an IV, it’s absorbed in a much higher percentage.

WHAT’S THE SETUP?

It’s a simple process and not as intimidating as it looks or sounds. An intravenous (IV) bag filled with the good stuff (more on that later) is fed through a small catheter and tubing into your bloodstream via a small needle inserted into a vein. The bag is hung above your head, and it drip feeds slowly into your system. Depending on your drip of choice, it could take from 15 minutes to an hour.

48

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

health & wellness | IV THERAPY DOING THERAPY Infusion therapy can treat a variety of conditions, such as: • Autoimmune disorders • Dehydration • Crohn’s disease • Haemophilia • Immune Deficiencies • Multiple Sclerosis • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Pain Always check with your medical practitioner before proceeding with any medical treatments.

WHAT’S IN THE BAG?

The registered nurse will design a solution specifically for your desired outcomes (glowy skin!) or health needs. They can include vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and antioxidants in a sterile solution which is a mixture of sodium chloride to hydrate your body and deliver the chosen formula. In medical situations. IV therapy is also used to feed patients who are malnourished due to illness or those who cannot eat orally.

ANY RISKS?

With a line being inserted into your bloodstream, there is always a small risk of infection. If the fluid drips too quickly, you can feel a little lightheaded or nauseous while your drip works. Working with a reputable IV therapy practice, where safety is a priority, is a must; plus, always tell the registered nurse of any conditions you have or medication you are taking – including the ones considered to be alternative therapies like therapeutic teas and herbs.

50

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

HOW WILL IT HELP YOU? IV therapy practices offer a menu of treatments. They could include a cocktail of vitamins designed for specific outcomes. Some of the vitamins administered could consist of Vitamin B12, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin C, Glutathione and Magnesium and trace elements like Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese and Chromium. Treatments range from R175 to R1250 per session. Available remedies may include: • A high dose vitamin cocktail with electrolytes to boost energy and athletic performance, endurance or muscle recovery. • A skin-brightening formula to even skin tone, reduce pigmentation and promote a healthy glow. • A hangover recovery or detox. • A fertility drip containing glutathione. •A n anti-inflammatory drip to reduce inflammation and help you cope with stress, insomnia or fatigue. ‘How many sessions are needed before clients feel benefits? ‘It

depends on the drip. Most people will feel the benefits of the energy boost immediately or in the days following their drip. With the skin radiance drip, it will take around four sessions to start seeing a healthy glow,’ explains Keri Rudolph CE of The IV Bar. And don’t get hung up on the needle, she says. The needle is so small. It’s nothing near the size of the needles used when donating blood. Once inserted, the needle is removed, and a small plastic “straw” remains. It isn’t very painful at all,’ says Keri; plus, the benefits far outweigh the one second of discomfort. LOOKING FOR TREATMENTS? Hygiene and reputable products are important if you want to explore IV treatments. The IV Bar has 12 branches including BluBird Melrose North. Bedfordview, Boksburg, Bryanston. Douglasdale, Irene, Johannesburg South, Linksfield, Nelspruit, The Grove Mall, Sea Point, Woodlands. For a full list of treatments visit www.theivbar.co.za

Make your

SYSTEM SOUND There’s a delicate balance of hormones in your body determining your health. We look at the silent system driving it and how to make yours work better. BY LORI COHEN

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

53

health & wellness | ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Y

ou may not have heard of the endocrine system, but it’s the silent force behind some of the most critical functions in your body. Made up of organs and glands, it is a complex network throughout the body. Your endocrine system makes hormones that control everything from your mood to your metabolism. It controls how your hormones are released and sends the hormones into your bloodstream to travel to other body parts.

REFLECTING ON THE HEALTH OF YOUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Because the glands and organs that make up your endocrine system are so far-reaching, how do you know when it’s not working optimally? If your endocrine system isn’t healthy, you might have fertility issues, struggle with stress, gain weight quickly or be low on energy. That’s because high levels of sugar stay in your blood instead of moving into your cells.

54

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

A healthy, balanced lifestyle and diet is the cornerstone of a healthy endocrine system. But there are numerous contributors in our everyday life that can compromise the delicate hormonal balance at play in our bodies, which we call endocrine system disruptors (ESDs). They are chemicals or mixtures of chemicals that interfere with the way the body’s hormones work. Some mimic our natural hormones, which trick the body into thinking that they are hormones. Others block natural hormones from doing their job or increase or decrease the levels of hormones in the blood by affecting how they are made, broken down, or stored in the body. Finally, other EDCs can change how sensitive our bodies are to different hormones.

HOW ARE WE EXPOSED?

EDCs come from many different sources so that we can be exposed to them frequently. They can be found in the air we breathe and our food and water. They can also enter the body

through the skin. We can trace sources back to industrial chemicals and pesticides, food packaging, cosmetics, fabrics and more. We really can’t avoid them entirely, but we can take steps to reduce our exposure.

WHAT STEPS CAN YOU TAKE TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY ENDOCRINE SYSTEM?

According to nutritionist and BioEnergetic Stress Conditioner Hayley Wylie, adopt the following: • Mostly eat clean and whole foods which have preferably not been overly sprayed with pesticides. • Manage your stress, sleep well and move your body. •A void plastic wrapping on foods and in other packaging, processed foods and refined sugars, as well as household chemicals and personal care products. • Look after your digestive system. Our hormones play such an important role as messengers to different organs and systems, but once they have done their job, we

health & wellness | ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

need to be able to excrete them to avoid build-up in our system. •A void inflammatory foods such as processed foods, sugar and gluten. ‘I recommend everyone I see with thyroid issues to avoid gluten and sometimes dairy and other foods which are triggering inflammation in their body too,’ says Hayley.

WHAT FOODS OR SUPPLEMENTS SUPPORT A HEALTHY ENDOCRINE SYSTEM?

What to eat: Cruciferous vegetables Why: Rich sources of indole-3carbinole which supports our liver as it metabolises our oestrogen and prevents a build-up of the harmful oestrogen metabolites. You can also supplement with i3C or DIM.

What to eat: Rosemary Why: Helps prevent harmful genes from triggering (such as those that predispose us to cancer). What to eat: You can add flaxseed to smoothies, salads or oats in the morning. Why: This superfood helps remove a build-up of harmful oestrogens in our bodies. What to eat: High folate foods (asparagus, legumes, leafy greens and eggs) Why: They all contribute to keeping our hormones in balance. If you decide to supplement with folate, choose a methylated form of folate, which is easier for your body to metabolise.

What to eat: Iodine rich food (like seaweed). Why: Foods that are rich in iodine such can support thyroid health. Iodine supplementation must be done with medical supervision. What to eat: Brazil nuts, lamb, oysters, seafood, grass-fed beef, cashews, spinach, chicken, eggs, mushrooms, chickpeas and asparagus, which are all great foods for your thyroid. Why: Our thyroid needs selenium, zinc, vitamin D and B vitamins to perform at its peak. What to eat: Omega 3 rich foods such as oily fish. Why: They reduce inflammation.

WHAT MAKES UP THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM? Let’s break down the most critical spots and their essential role in the body. Hypothalamus What it does: It secretes hormones that control how your pituitary gland releases hormones. Your sleep, body temperature, blood pressure and appetite are all affected by it. Pineal body What it does: It produces melatonin, a hormone that helps the body know when it’s time to sleep. Pituitary gland What it does: It controls many functions of the other endocrine glands. Thyroid and parathyroid What they do: The thyroid plays a role in the body’s metabolism while the parathyroid glands regulate

56

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

the body’s calcium balance. Thymus What it does: It produces white blood cells that fight infections and destroy abnormal cells. Adrenal gland What it does: It makes and releases a hormone and epinephrine that maintain blood pressure and regulate metabolism. Pancreas What it does: It plays a role in digestion and hormone production, including insulin and glucagon, which regulate levels of blood sugar. Ovary/Testes What they do: Ovaries contain eggs and produce estrogen and progesterone, while testes produce testosterone and sperm.

id you know? The liver is the largest solid organ and gland in the body. The liver is a powerful and busy organ. This reddish-brown wedge-shaped organ with two lobes of unequal size weighs in at just about 1.5kg and is the largest organ in the abdomen. Situated under the diaphragm in the upper-right quadrant it performs a variety of tasks. The three biggest ones being: it cleanses the blood, produces bile which is a liquid necessary for digestion and stores glycogen which is an energy source in the form of sugar.

HOW TO MAINTAIN OPTIMAL LIVER FUNCTION?

According to Clinical Nutritionist, Elenia Kolokotronis (www.elenia-k.com)

60

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

in order to ensure optimisation of liver function good nutrition and a healthy, reduced-stress lifestyle are absolutely essential and work together to promote a healthy liver.

SYMPTOMS OF POOR LIVER FUNCTION:

• Urine that is dark in colour • Pale stool colour • Chronic fatigue • Skin/eyes that appear jaundiced • Leg and ankle swelling • Skin itchiness • Vomiting/nausea

IMPORTANT FACTORS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY LIVER: • Maintain a healthy weight, • Sound nutrition made up of fruits, vegetables and high-fibre • Low intake of refined sugars, processed foods and refined

carbohydrates, • Keep hydrated, • Good, restful sleep • Keep fit and active and reduce the stressful elements in your daily life “Ideally,” Kolokotronis advises,“ a no smoking, no alcohol and minimal medication way of life will only preserve the liver and its ability to function well with long-lasting success.” Calciferous vegetables and foods high in vitamins and minerals are vital as they help the liver greatly and will help nourish our bodies. These superfoods will aid not only the liver processes but the rest of the body successfully.

nutritional deficiencies in the world. Vitamin A lowers iron levels and may lead to anaemia which decreases the Vitamin A levels. Foods that are rich in Vitamin A include liver, fish, carrots, broccoli and gem squash. Iron-rich foods include: red meat, poultry, beans, spinach, peas and raisins. Vitamin D: According to research carried out at the University of Tennessee (Memphis), over 90% of people with chronic liver disease have a vitamin D deficiency. Foods that are Vitamin D rich include: oily fish (salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel), liver, egg (yolks) and liver. It’s important to note that Vitamin D should not be taken in excess. Vitamin E: can be found in plantbased oils, seeds, fruit, fibre, vegetables and nuts. Avocados are a great source of Vitamin E. Vitamin B12 is another necessary component of a healthy liver. It can be found in fish, meat, milk, eggs and cheese.

62

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

“Hydration is a very important aspect for liver and overall health,” Kolokotronis advises, “around three litres of water for adult men and women especially if they are active or when it is the hot summer months of the year.” Added supplements that can be

taken are milk thistle - the active substance found is silymarin which consists of several natural plant chemicals. Silymarin assists with the regeneration of liver tissue, decreasing inflammation and acts as an antioxidant to improve liver cells from damage. You may also take folate, vitamin B12, iron and vitamin D. “Consult a professional, however, before taking a handful of supplements,” cautions Kolokotronis. “It is absolutely essential to note that stress is a huge factor when it comes to liver health - minimising stress and leading a healthy overall lifestyle will help to keep your liver in tip-top shape.” The bottom line is your liver works tirelessly as the body’s filter to clear out toxins. When you work it too hard with overconsumption of alcohol, chronic viral infections or a prolonged unhealthy, stressful lifestyle and diet it can deter its health. The answer to a healthy liver is simple: Drink plenty of water and keep your stress level low, eat healthily and plan your lifestyle.

id you know that 90 percent of our happy hormone – serotonin – is produced in the gut? Bernice Venter, registered dietitian and practitioner at Geneway and Optiway explains this and adds that if you’re struggling with GUT health, “you will most likely feel anxious too as there isn’t enough happy hormone being produced.” She unpacks it like this: “We also have something called the GUT-brain connection.” This means we need a good working GUT and some nutrients like Vitamin D and Omega-3 to help with the binding of serotonin from the GUT to the brain, she says. “Think about when you’re nervous or stressed, does it affect your stomach? That is your GUT brain connection.” So while you may feel you’re the only one suffering, not only from heightened stress and anxiety but stomach issues too, you’re really not alone. “A lot of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) patients experience anxiety issues, which then, in turn,

aggravate the GUT which then prevents the GUT from making serotonin, increasing anxiety,” says Bernice. She explains it as a vicious cycle, and adds that some sufferers may even develop depression due to decreased serotonin production. Lastly, B12 deficiency can occur with poor GUT health as many nutrients aren’t absorbed causing an overgrowth of bacteria in the GUT. How to take back control and get your

SUPERFOOD SNACKS Yes, it’s easy to eat-on-the-go and still keep your GUT (and mood) stable! Add these superfood snacks – Kim’s list of calming foods – to your grocery list for body-loving munchies. • “Bananas are easy to digest and contain a good amount of potassium.” • “Apples are great at calming the gut, specifically the flesh.” • “Papaya can help improve digestion.” • “Rice (and other bland carbohydrates) soothe the stomach nicely” – in other words, treat yourself to sushi instead of a fast-food burger and chips. • “Aloe juice coats your stomach and relieves stomach aches.” bacteria (the good bacteria) such as yoghurt and kefir; fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, miso and kombucha are also good sources,” says registered dietician, Kim Hofmann. She also recommends prebiotic foods that contain soluble fibre. This feeds the GUT bacteria and stimulates their growth. “Prebiotic foods include almonds, asparagus, bananas, garlic, greens, kiwi, leeks, oats, onions and whole-wheat.” In fact, if you’re a lover of whole-wheat and whole grains, read on. “The key

68

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

nutrient to stabilise the GUT is fibre,” explains Bernice, and this should come from a number of sources such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables and plant proteins like lentils, beans and chickpeas. Eating consciously yet broadly is the right mindset: “don’t just blanket eliminate a food from your diet because you believe it could be an irritant,” cautions Kim. “Gluten is a common one that people eliminate unnecessarily.” What she does warn against – after identifying what is irritating you – are frequent irritants like food additives, preservatives, gluten (if it’s the issue), artificial sweeteners, certain sugars and yeast.

“To figure out food-specific sensitivities, keep a detailed log of what you eat and any symptoms you experience,” she suggests. “When larger food groups need to be eliminated make sure that you do it with a registered dietician who can ensure that your diet stays balanced.”

LIVING THE LIFESTYLE Managing good GUT health and anxiety means more than just nutrition. Kim recommends supplementing with probiotics and including guar gum and peppermint oil to help soothe and calm the GUT. The latter can cause reflux, she explains, so watch your reaction. “One of the biggest irritants of the gut is not food, but stress, so before starting to eliminate foods try to focus on bringing some quiet time, nurturing experiences (like walking, reading, taking a bath, listening to music), meditation and relaxation into your day and see if that makes the difference.”

exercises you can reduce the stress levels in your body and lower your heart rate and blood pressure. It has also been found to help reduce the possibility of burnout for parents and other primary caregivers by helping to relieve stress.

MAKES LEARNING FUN

Family Yoga is a lovely way for children to learn with their imaginations through the various poses and positions that are based on animals and natural objects. Children will also learn the benefits of regular exercise and movement of the body and start to build healthy habits from a young age. It also gives them a chance to be quiet, to focus and reflect in a fun and meaningful way.

UNINTERRUPTED FAMILY TIME Family Yoga helps to strengthen the

bond between family members, especially for working parents, as it makes a specific time that is spent together as a family with no other distractions. Family Yoga allows parents and children to connect while the children are still young and create strong relationships that will last for life. Family Yoga is a fun and enjoyable activity that will benefit every member of the family and it is never too late to start! Make the time and get your family started on these skills now so you can watch them grow and blossom into amazing, thoughtful, and kind human beings. “Learning how to love is the goal and the purpose of spiritual life–not learning how to develop psychic powers, not learning how to bow, chant, do yoga, or even meditate, but learning to love. Love is the truth. Love is the light.” - Lama Surya Das

Island Salad

Grilled Nectarines and Coconut Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

2 teaspoons coconut oil 1 cup uncooked quinoa (preferably red)

Sweet is without a doubt one of the yummiest flavours and when contrasted with dark leafy greens. It can seem bitter and inedible; however, this is only true when it comes to refined sugars which plague so many people’s day-to-day diets. Mixing different tastes such as sweet and bitter is the way in which you can achieve real flavour. It’s this contrast that makes a dish stand out. In this recipe, for example, I combine natural sugar from a fruit with the bitter greens which complements them beautifully and makes them incredibly enjoyable. So, if bitter greens aren’t something you would typically eat, I encourage you to try this salad and experience how the flavours enhance each other.

4 cups boiling water Salt and pepper ½ cup edamame beans, shelled 2 nectarines, halved and pips removed Olive oil ¼ cup coconut flakes 50 grams raw macadamia nuts 2 handfuls baby spinach 1 avocado, peeled, pip removed, cubed Dressing Zest and juice of 2 limes 5 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon honey ½ teaspoon red chilli flakes (optional) 1 small handful fresh mint leaves, finely chopped Salt and pepper

method

Heat the coconut oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add the quinoa and stir, allowing the quinoa to toast for roughly 2 minutes. Add 2 cups of the boiling water and a good crack of salt and bring to a simmer for 15–20 minutes. As the last of the water is absorbed in the saucepan, switch off the heat and cover with a lid, allowing the quinoa to steam for 5 minutes. Once steamed, remove the lid and spread out the quinoa on a baking tray, allowing it to cool. Mix all the ingredients for the salad dressing together in a small bowl and season to taste. Set aside. Place the shelled edamame beans in another small bowl and cover with the remaining 2 cups of boiling water. Blanch for 5 minutes and then rinse with cold water, drain and set aside. Slice the nectarines into crescent shapes about 5 mm thick. Drizzle lightly with olive oil. Heat a griddle pan over medium to high heat, then add the nectarines to the hot pan. Grill for 4–5 minutes on each side until grill marks appear. Remove from the heat and set aside. Toast the coconut flakes in a small frying pan for 5 minutes until golden brown. Keep an eye on them so that they don’t burn; meanwhile, roughly chop the macadamia nuts. Spread the spinach leaves over a medium-sized serving platter. Cover the spinach with the cooled quinoa and add the edamame beans. Top the salad with the avocado, nectarine slices, toasted coconut and macadamia nuts. Drizzle the dressing generously over the salad and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Making healthy eating easy is key. You do not want to spend two hours creating a perfect dish if you are starving and have not eaten the whole day. You also can’t expect yourself to make healthier choices in those moments. This recipe ticks all the right boxes as it is easy and can form part of meal prep for the week ahead too.

method

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. For the hummus, blend all the ingredients together. Add a little more olive oil if the blender gets stuck. Adjust seasoning if necessary and set aside. Place the potatoes in a medium-sized saucepan of boiling water with a bit of salt. Boil for 10 minutes or until they are soft when pierced with a fork. Once ready, drain and let them cool on a roasting tray. Gently squash the potatoes using the back of a fork. Drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle with the paprika and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper. Place the Brussels sprouts and melted coconut oil in a bowl. Toss until the sprouts are evenly coated. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer them to the roasting tray with the potatoes. Pop the veggies into the oven and roast for 40 minutes. Toss the Brussels sprouts at the halfway mark and check on the potatoes. Once golden brown, add a drizzle of olive oil and return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until you have golden brown and crunchy potatoes with soft Brussels sprouts. Once ready, remove from the oven. Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle half the sunflower seeds (if using) over the dip and top with rocket or baby beetroot leaves. Arrange the potatoes and Brussels sprouts on a serving platter and sprinkle with the remaining sunflower seeds (if using) and a lashing of lemon juice. Serve with the hummus on the side.

Miso Broth Walnut and Crispy Tofu

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

1 tablespoon coconut oil 250 grams Tofu, cubed Broth 4 cups vegetable stock 2 sheets Nori, finely sliced 1 bunch Swiss chard, stalks removed and leaves roughly chopped ¼ cup finely sliced spring onion 1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks 1 cup Shimeji mushrooms 250 grams Pak Choi Sesame oil 250 grams buckwheat noodles Olive oil 1 teaspoon liquid aminos Miso paste 120 grams raw walnuts, roasted ¼ cup brown rice miso paste 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar

Time is the one thing we seem to lack and our first excuse for not achieving our goals. This recipe is quick and easy to make, and incredibly good for the microbiome. Miso is a fermented food, which means it is great for gut health and adds a beautiful depth of flavour to a quick and easy broth. Having good gut health not only ensures that we don’t have an array of digestive issues, but can also assist us with mental health issues. Healing one’s gut means happier moods. Time management aids us in combating stress and supports healthy habits.

method

For the tofu, heat the coconut oil in a medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry for 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. Once ready, remove from the heat, drain on paper towel and set aside. Now let’s get the broth started. Place the vegetable stock, nori, Swiss chard, spring onion and ginger into a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, then switch off the heat. Add the mushrooms and pak choi and stir through. Keep the lid on to retain the heat. Meanwhile, cook the noodles as per the packet instructions. Once ready, drizzle with olive oil to stop them from sticking together and then set aside. For the miso paste, place the walnuts into a food processor and blend. Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Serve the broth with the noodles, crispy tofu and a big dollop of miso paste stirred in. Drizzle over some sesame oil and the liquid aminos for that extra salty kick.

Banoffee Pie Caramel, Banana and Coconut Whip Serves: 6 Preparation time: 15 minutes (excluding chilling time) Baking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

3 bananas, sliced

80 grams dairy-free dark chocolate, grated

Here is a fun fact. For every delicious meal you have had that is unhealthy, there is an equally tasty yet healthy equivalent. Yes, that means you can have your cake and eat it. All you have to do is put in the effort to make it a cake that is healthy, with less sugar and fewer refined processed ingredients. I used to think that I would never be able to indulge if I wanted to be healthy. The fact is, it’s the opposite. Indulgence can be part of healthy, balanced living. The different elements of this recipe need time to set in the fridge, so making it the day before is recommended. Take note that the whip will only work if you have chilled your coconut cream in the can. Do not shake the can before use and make sure it is well chilled. You are only going to use the solid part that separates from the liquid in the can and rises to the top.

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Crust 5 Medjool dates, pitted 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup desiccated coconut ½ cup raw almonds ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup maple syrup ¼ cup melted coconut oil 2 teaspoons lemon juice Zest of ½ Lemon Caramel 20 large Medjool dates, pitted and soaked in warm water for 15 minutes then drained Pinch of salt 3 tablespoons smooth almond butter 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla paste Whip ½ cup coconut cream solid, chilled in the fridge overnight or for at least 4 hours 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or Xylitol if you want the cream to stay white) ¼ teaspoon Agar Agar powder

82

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

method

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. For the crust, place the dates in a high-speed food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Add the oats, coconut and almonds and blend until it forms a fine crumb. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until well combined. Gently press the crust into a 20 cm pie pan or individual tart bases, preferably with a removable base. Pop the pie pan into the oven and bake for 10–15 minutes until golden brown. Once ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. For the caramel, place all the ingredients into a high-speed food processor or blender and blend until smooth. If the mixture gets stuck, add 1 tablespoon hot water. Once smooth, refrigerate for at least 10 minutes. For the whip, place the solid coconut cream into a stand mixer with the whisk attachment and whisk on high speed. Once stiff peaks start to form, add the remaining ingredients and whisk until well combined. Cover the bowl and pop it into the fridge for 20 minutes. Once all the elements are chilled you can assemble the pie. Start by spooning the caramel on to the crust base. Spread it to create an even layer, and then top it with the banana slices (dust with cinnamon or grated chocolate, if you like). Top with lashings of the whip and sprinkle over the grated chocolate and a dusting of cinnamon. Pop it back into the fridge to set for a minimum of 2 hours, then serve.

UPCYCLED CHARM

Making use of upcycled vintage furniture items such as an old wooden sideboard or chest of drawers – as seen here – is bang on trend in bathrooms. It’s an excellent way to add a touch of originality and charm to an otherwise stark space, and very easy to do. Pick a basin that subtly complements the lines of the furniture piece that you’ve chosen, and keep the tapware either very simple, or similar in style to the basin and refurbished vanity unit.

TIP: Adding a glam dimension to this bathroom (while also serving a very practical purpose) is the oversized bevelled mirror, which is from Graham & Green (grahamandgreen.co.uk). Duravit (duravit.com) has a selection of sleek countertop basins: check out their Luv range in particular.

TIP: Every design detail in this space has been carefully considered, with the graphic lineality of the wall tiles combining beautifully with the detailing on the vanity, and even the subtle lines of the upholstery contributing Decostyle touches to the overall look.

TIP: The bathtub is positioned to enable its occupant to relish the picture-perfect mountain view, with the vintage bamboo side table alongside it providing the ideal resting place for pampering bath-time accoutrements.

BATHTIME BOUDOIR

Unashamedly feminine in its styling and details, this bathroom is one of a pair of en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms that are situated on opposite sides of the master suite in a large family home. The walls are hand-painted with chinoiserie-style decorations, the hanging light fitting is by Moooi (moooi.com), and interior designer Andrea Graff (andreagraff.co.za) conceptualised and commissioned the custom-made vanity unit and Perspex shelving.

DECO STYLE

This combines colours and sleek lines to create a contemporary take on Art Deco in a glamorous urban bolthole. This bathroom demonstrates that eschewing white can be a very good idea. The use of multiple textures – from sleek glass tiles to wooden flooring and velvet upholstery – plays a key role in taking this space from ordinary to exceptional. Also notable is the sophisticated use of colour, which reinforces the overall impression of tailored masculinity.

home décor | BATHROOMS

TIP: Setting off the vintage appeal in complementary fashion here is the black steel and glass shower cubicle, which is a delightfully on-trend touch that brings this bathroom straight into the 21st century.

IN THE DETAILS

Located in a thoughtfully renovated country cottage that is a haven for salvaged and vintage items of all kinds, this bathroom combines a faded Persian rug with reused marble countertops and a charming pair of shelf brackets. The latter are made from reclaimed pieces of the intricate ironwork detailing on Victorian-era houses in South Africa that is colloquially locally known as “broekie lace” (“broekies” is the Afrikaans word for women’s underwear).

TIP: The vintage mirror – complete with yet more floral detailing – is the perfect final touch in this charm-filled space. It’s worth tracking down authentic versions of these mirrors when recreating this look; they are relatively easy to find at second-hand stores and bric-a-brac markets.

FLOWER POWER

Among a number of vintage-style adornments to a gorgeous old grande dame of a heritage house is this delightfully old-school bathroom, in which the basin and vanity unit – conceptualised and custom-made for the space by interior designer Charlotte Collins (instagram.com/charlottecollinsdesignstudio/) – is fashioned from a salvaged lab cabinet. Its simple lines and functional feel beautifully complement the extravagantly floral wallpaper.

TIP: The multi-referential blend of textures, materials and colours in this bathroom is bold and fearless – and adding yet more tactile appeal to the space are the white wall tiles, which are handmade by South African bespoke tile manufacturers, Akashic Tiles akashictiles.co.za.

ON THE CURVE

This curvaceous, custom-made bathroom vanity unit is a stylish exercise in retro chic. Combining as it does very contemporary colours with a terrazzo countertop and oversized tiles, as well as the lesson in elegant geometry created via the shapely oval of the unit itself and the perfectly round basins (from South African design Studio 19 studio19.co), this bathroom is a Deco-inspired lesson in up-to-the-minute style.

COUNTRY COOL

The iron Vieques XS bath, created by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola for Agape (agapedesign.it), is the show-stopper that makes this light-filled bathroom so memorable. Taking centre stage in this spa-like relaxation zone – which is situated in a cottage on a working wine farm – the bath’s elegance is highlighted by the all-white floor and wall tiles, which enhance the back-to-basics atmosphere.

TIP: A large, oak-framed mirror, sourced from Block & Chisel (blockandchisel.co.za) and seemingly quite casually placed on the vanity counter, opens up the space as well as being a very practical necessity.

ANGLE POISE

Bold and angular in its lines, and making use of honest, old-fashioned materials, this striking bathroom reflects its globe-trotting chef owner’s easy, naturally inspired aesthetic. An industrial-style shower cubicle, plus loose items like the ladder towel rail and the chunky, open-sided bathroom vanity – fashioned out of solid oak – combine to create an unaffected look and feel. The rustic chandelier is the perfect finishing touch to an utterly original space.

TIP: The tiled shelf behind the bath is perfectly positioned to hold sponges, soaps and other pampering essentials; above the tub hangs a 19th-century botanical print that adds to the farm-style feel of the space and serves as a reminder of its rural setting.

TIP: Perhaps the ultimate way to add a touch of casual-luxe to a vintage-style bathroom is by using an old Persian rug underfoot. Here, the carpet combines with an ultra-simple window blind in natural linen to create an authentically bohemian feel.

LIGHT FANTASTIC

An opulent Edwardian home is the setting for this very atmospheric bathroom, which combines old and new elements in a seemingly effortless mix. The homeowner, mindful that she lives in a heritage gem that was built in 1902, has been careful to keep her decorating interventions subtle, unobtrusive and in keeping with the character of the house – hence the slipper-style bathtub and authentic Czechoslovakian crystal beaded chandelier seen here.

ON A PEDESTAL

Interior designer Lindie Ferreira created a unique synergy of antiques, Quaker-style simplicity and modernist collectables in this glamorous house. “All of these feed into the materiality of the home; the grain of the wood, the flecks in the marble,” she says. And making use of these kinds of “noble materials” means all the interiors – including this marble-clad bathroom – feel utterly classic, yet very contemporary too.

TIP: The pair of basins in this bathroom are perfect for the space: the pedestal style makes them yet another classic element of the decor, yet they also have pared-back, modern lines. Find similar styles at Burlington (burlingtonbathrooms. com) and Hudson Reed (hudsonreed.com).

These are some top tips to make the most of it. BY LAUREN ZUIDEMA

A

msterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands. The city has over 160 canals which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and because of this, it’s been nicknamed ‘Venice of the North’. The city (and country) is well known for its delicious cheese production, Anne Frank, the Red Light District, the traditional Dutch wooden shoes known as clogs, windmills and tulips; and so much more.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

First do some research and apply for a Schengen visa. You cannot visit it, unless you carry an EU passport. The largest airport in the Netherlands is Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. It’s a world-class, well-oiled machine, and once you arrive, you’ll easily be able to direct yourself from within to your destination. Amsterdam is well routed with public transport, including trams, buses and overland and underground metro trains. The weather is welcoming regardless of the time of year. Summer temperatures (June to August) hover around 22°C, and winter temperatures

104

(December to February) can plummet to about 6°C. The most popular months to visit are during the summer months with mild to warm weather, but trust me when I say that Amsterdam transforms into a winter wonderland during the winter months and has equally as much appeal. Hotels and guesthouses are plentiful in this city, and many trusted online booking sites can provide top-notch accommodation

suggestions depending on your budget and needs. For the extra adventurous, why not stay in a houseboat on a canal? TIP: If you prefer to book your own trip instead of using a travel agent, try www.bookings.com to book accommodation.

MUST-SEE ATTRACTIONS This city, which is steeped in history, has many museums through which

you can wander. The world famous Van Gogh Museum has the most extensive collection of Vincent van Gogh’s art in the world and includes over 200 paintings and more than 500 of his drawings. It also includes pieces by talents like Rodin, Monet, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet and Gauguin. The Rijksmuseum is another popular attraction that showcases Dutch art and historical artefacts dating back as far as 800 years. On

show is The Night Watch by Rembrandt and The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer, to name a few. Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s go-to park, perfect for a picnic. The park, dating back to 1865, has the Openluchttheater in its centre that schedules free live music, musical theatre, and cabaret in the summer months. The Herengracht is one of the four main canals in the city centre, and as

you meander down a walkway or float down by boat, you’ll get to see one of Amsterdam’s oldest residences built-in 1590. A canal cruise is next on the cards and is considered an absolute must-do activity. There are day and night cruises, short and extended cruises dependent on your schedule. The Pannenkoekenboot (Pancake Boat) is a fun 75-minute boat trip on the IJ river with an unlimited Dutch pancake buffet. In winter, the canals can sometimes freeze over and, you guessed it, transform into extended ice rinks ideal for an afternoon of ice skating. Book a bike tour. No trip to Amsterdam is complete without renting a bicycle, for short cycles through the city, or to take it all in with a three-hour city tour. Nemo, perfect for the whole family, is the largest science centre in the Netherlands. It has five floors of exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations in which to get involved. INDULGE IN DUTCH FOOD

Most restaurants and foodie street vendors serve up delicious traditional flavours you just have to try. Pannenkoeken is a Dutch favourite, and although pancakes are common worldwide, the Dutch pancake is next level and well worth a try. A popular

106

flavour combination for pannenkoeken is bacon and sugar syrup. Oliebollen are deep-fried balls of dough similar to doughnuts that often include raisins or currants in the batter. They’re usually served steaming hot, dusted with powdered sugar. Speculaas is a firm favourite all over the Netherlands. It’s a spiced shortbread type of biscuit, very moreish. For something a bit more savoury, my personal favourite is the Kroketten. It is a croquette made from bechamel sauce mixed with a meat or vegetarian filling, then breaded and deep-fried. Who’s counting calories on holiday, right?

FUN FACTS • There are more bicycles in Amsterdam that there are residents. Roughly around 900 000 bicycles! Residents and cyclists cover approximately two million kilometres a day. • The only museum in the world that you can cycle through is the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam South. • There are 165 canals in Amsterdam. • Schiphol, Amsterdam’s airport, sits 4 metres below sea level.

It ‘Aint What You See,

It’s The Way That You See It BY ALASDAIR CUNNINGHAM

A

fter every monster in the Beast Quest books had been defeated and every Waldo found, it was time for school to begin. Huzzah! From now on, they would be someone else’s problem. Double Huzzah! It was like a dream come true. I would finally have my house, my office, and my sanity back where it belonged. I felt sorry for my youngest as Grade R had been a washout, and Grade 1 was hardly going to be the soft and sentimental entry into ‘Big School’ it was supposed to be. It was more like a quick drop-and-roll out of a moving car, followed by the obligatory photograph and a hastily shouted “Love you! See you later!” before speeding home to enjoy the silence. The look on his face, though, as he put on a tie for the first time just said it all. “ It’s like putting a collar on a wild animal,” he said, in all his six-year-old fury, with his tiny fist raised to the sky, wanting to know why. He has a point, though, and now that I had seen it, I could not unsee it. Kids have that extraordinary power that allows them to view things in a different light from the rest of us. Like the time I was watching the news with the lads, and the presenters were talking about Bezos becoming even more wealthy than he already was the week before when I heard some wild, uncontrollable sniggering coming from the couch. “What is it?” I asked,

108

absolute mama | ISSUE 9

not really wanting to know. “Look, Dad, it’s a Willie!” they both shouted, pointing at the Amazon logo. I had always taken it for an arrow that went from A to Z. Well, not anymore; now it’s forever just a penis that I cannot unsee no matter how hard I try. You’re welcome. Then we were driving somewhere a while ago, and the eldest asks,” Why does the KFC dude have such a tiny body for such a large head?” I immediately wanted to tell him, no, that it is actually a bowtie he is wearing, but alas! my son did the damage, and all I ever see is a gigantic head on a tiny body. My kids aren’t the only ones, though; my wife does it too. One day we took a different entrance into our local mall, and she saw a sign she thought was advertising the opening of a new shop. She said, “ Looks like things are slowly turning a corner. There’s a new shop opened called Entranceto.” We both pondered what it could be selling as it had an almost Spanish sounding name. She looked high and low for it, even going as far as to stop the security guards and ask about this place’s whereabouts. En-tran-cee-to, she would say. You must have seen it. But alas, the location of said seller of now wholly imagined goods remained a mystery. Until one day, it wasn’t, and she returned home looking rather bashful. “I’ve figured it out,” she said, unable to look me in the eye. “ It’s not

En-tran-cee-to; it’s Entrance To.” In her defence, the words were relatively close together and all in capital letters. But for now, until the end of time, it will always be Entranceto. Usually, things of this nature take place at home around family members, as I dislike showing the world how ‘dof’ we can sometimes be. A recent trip to the dentist put paid to that when she asked my 8-year old, “ Do you floss?” and the fruit of my loins starts busting a move in the dentist’s chair, saying,” What, the dance?” We all laughed at that until I saw the bill and made sure that he knew how to floss for real this time. I don’t know what the little dude has about chicken, but the last one made me chuckle. Since the universe conspired against us taking a holiday last year, I thought I’d expose them to the world via the Travel Channel. So far, so good. We were learning about Egypt’s pyramids, the Eiffel Tower and all manner of exciting things abroad. Then one day,” Maybe we should go to Vietnam. They have KFC in Vietnam. Look! It’s Colonel Sanders,” he says, pointing at a black-and-white picture of Ho Chi Minh. Yup, the Socio-Political Struggle of Vietnam is clearly not on the Grade 3 curriculum this year. I may have to bring it up with his long-suffering headmaster, who funnily enough, in a particular light, and from a certain angle, looks like neither of them.

She escaped, but so did her captors, and the items stolen from her family were never recovered, until now. He’s interested especially when the FBI tell him that the man at large was also behind an act of domestic terrorism. The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades.
