Editor’s letter A couple of weeks ago we took the clan to a private house that is situated in the Cape Agulhas National Park for a magical weekend of sun and fun. This natural haven is situated nearly 3 hours from Cape Town and hosts the southernmost tip of Africa where the two oceans famously meet. The beautiful park is also an ancient cultural and natural-heritage site that dates back thousands of years. And to my delight, there was no tv, and cell reception marginal which made it the perfect breakaway for recharging our batteries, thankfully without the influences of any tech. We spent every day from sunrise to sunset on the sandy beach collecting special treasures, exploring the rock pools, and soaking up the sun. With it being spring tide, the rockpools were pure magic and the kids had the good fortune of befriending an octopus. We had our own ‘Craig Foster’ moment and the interaction between her and the kids was amazing. The weekend was special but even more, it gave me a sense of perspective, so badly needed after the last 2 years of anarchy with the pandemic having altered most of our perceptions from viewing the glass as half-full, to seeing the glass as half-empty thanks to all the limitations, misery and restrictions. We believe what we perceive to be accurate, and we create our own realities based on those perceptions. And although our perceptions feel very real, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily true. Our perceptions influence all areas of our lives and the negative experiences we’ve endured can also cause us to miss out on some fantastic things life has to offer. We all have so many blessings and yet most of the time we fail to notice them. Recognise your blessings and don’t
take them for granted. The power is in your hands (er, mind), create your own ‘le dolce vita’! In this issue, we address skin enemy number one - skin cancer. Living in forever sunny South Africa means we’re all skin cancer aware right? Not always. Incidental UV exposure can be just as damaging and dangerous as beach days. BY HELEN CLEMSON

W
hat’s the last thing you do before leaving the house for school drop off? Sunscreen on the kids? And what about slathering it on your arms and hands that are going to rest on the wheel for the next 20 minutes? While car windows may protect you from UVB rays (these are responsible for sunburn), they can’t cut UVA. Those are the ones that penetrate the skin more deeper, leading to sun damage – which means skin ageing and sometimes, skin cancer. This type of accidental or incidental exposure means that the UV rays hit the skin and we’re not even aware of it; or, simply haven’t planned for it. “Typical examples include walking the dogs, walking to and from the car, sitting next to a window (unless UV resistant treated), driving our cars, reflection off surfaces and so on,” explains aesthetic medical practitioner Dr Alek Nikolic, founder of SkinMiles

and sk.in. While we typically do most of our damage in our younger years, the issue is even if you think that brisk oncearound the block with Max wasn’t for very long - all sun exposure adds up.
What Lies Beneath Apart from protecting yourself every time you encounter the sun,
what’s the best way to ensure you’re ahead of potentially devasting skin cancers? “Visit a dermatologist yearly for a full skin analysis,” advises Dr Nikolic. Your healthcare professional will also know where to look for what’s known in dermatology as “atypical places” for skin cancers. These include under finger or toenails, in the mouth, on the scalp, on the palms of hands or soles of feet, in the groin area and even under the arms. While keeping checks on moles is very important, you may not see changes as a doctor does and inspections are an ongoing process. “For most of us, sun exposure and damage tend to be accumulative; however, just having a few severe exposures, still leads to sun damage and increases the risk of skin cancer,” says Dr Nikolic.
Common Ground According to reports by CANSA, “Skin cancer is the most common

cancer worldwide and South Africa has one of the highest monitored ultraviolet (UV) levels in the world, resulting in one of the highest skin cancer rates globally.” “Skin cancer, however, means different diagnoses for different people, and with different outcomes. The most common types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma,” reports CANSA. “Most patients are surprised with a BCC diagnosis, “says Dr Nikolic, and he urges those diagnosed to treat these seemingly non-threatening spots. “They tend to grow slowly and do not spread or cause death; however, they do cause local skin destruction. If left untreated it will eventually need surgical excision with a skin flap that will leave scarring.”
Stranger Things What if you hear terms like Merkel cell carcinoma from your doctor
after your skin cancer check-up? This lesser-known type (Kaposi’s sarcoma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma are others) may just look like a pink, red or purple bump. Not to be mistaken for a sore or cyst, this skin cancer needs
treatment too. While it’s rare it can be fatal, so those body scans with your dermatologist are vital, especially if you’re seeing marks on your skin that weren’t there before. It’s the same with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Patches or bumps of unexplained rough, scaly skin? Get them checked. Kaposi’s sarcoma may not be something you’re aware of at all. It crops up in intimate spots like the genitals and mouth (thanks to the underlying cause of cancer that forms in the lining of blood and lymph vessels). A gynae appointment is a good time to ask about the appearance of any purplish skin spots down there

Sunscreen at the ready? Every day, no matter the weather (“cloudy days can be just as damaging as sunny days,” says Dr Nikolic), apply an SPF 30 or higher that contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Reapply every two hours. For make up wearers, try a mineral SPF brush that doesn’t cause greasiness or shine. Neither does it interfere with your products.

Sunscreen can protect your skin against skin cancer and premature ageing, however, if not applied correctly it can be ineffective. BY ANJE HILL
Here are 5 easy tips from dermatologists to get the best protection for your skin:
1. C hoose a water-resistant sunscreen, that has an SPF of 30 or higher, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays.
2. A lways apply sunscreen before going outdoors. It takes roughly 15-30 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and to start protecting you. Applying it in advance will also make it less likely to wash off when you perspire. If you wait until you are in the sun before you apply sunscreen, your skin is unprotected and can burn.
3. A pply enough sunscreen. Most adults need about ½ a teaspoon for their face alone and 35ml to fully cover their body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.
4. A pply sunscreen to all skin not covered by clothing. To protect your lips, apply a natural lip balm with at least an SPF15. Don’t forget your neck, face, ears, hands, tops of your feet and legs. For those hard-to-reach areas like your back, ask someone to help you or use a spray sunscreen. If you have thinning hair, either apply sunscreen to your scalp or wear a wide-brimmed hat.
5. T o remain protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or strenuous exercise. People who get sunburned usually haven’t used enough sunscreen, haven’t reapplied it after being in the sun or used an expired product. Your skin is exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter.
The Sunscreen Problem
Marine Sanctuaries are home to some of the ocean’s most biologically diverse and culturally significant marine areas, and we need to ensure that these critical areas are protected from harmful chemicals, in addition to other damaging practices like oil and gas extraction. The key to keeping ocean life happy is to find an SPF that uses physical UVA and UVB filters (as opposed to the chemical ones that are harmful to our seas). Check the back of your tube for active ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They are not harmful to the ocean and will give you the protection that you need. Be kind to your skin and the planet!

The Good Doctor. Dr Nossel believes in taking a Biomedical approach to ADHD. “There is a place for medication. But it is not the only ‘solution’ and its place should be delineated. Because ADHD is a result of wholebody metabolic factors and issues, it makes sense to approach the management of ADHD with a much broader mindset. After the diagnosis: Based on the Biomedical model, parents need to seek answers about the general metabolic wellness of their child. Are there gut issues? Vitamin deficiencies? Detoxification inefficiencies? Inflammation dysregulation?

3. Cognitive functioning. If the previous 2 areas of treatment are effective, it may not be necessary to treat the brain manifestations of ADHD directly; however, if there are still cognitive issues, there is a place for medications that can facilitate functionality. What is a preservative (E220) SO2 is used to preserve/ retain a good colour. A brighter colour attracts the eye. However, the SO2 also suppresses the taste and flavour of the fruit. t is not unusual to have a fondness for routine or to like things done a certain way, but when thoughts about your routine start to become uncontrollable and begin to affect your life physically or mentally it could be a symptom of an obsessive-compulsive disorder such as Trichotillomania. Trichotillomania, or “hair-pulling disorder”, is a condition in which a person has an irresistible urge to pull out hair. This could be hair on the scalp, body hair, eyelashes, eyebrows or it could be fibres from blankets, hair from dolls or in some cases even pet hair. The condition can occur in people of all ages and the patterns of behaviour are similar. Hair pulling may be triggered by an emotional state such as anxiety, boredom, stress or tension and perhaps a self-soothing behaviour that results in initial feelings of gratification, relief or pleasure. Prof. Christine Lochner, PhD in Psychiatry and Co-Director of the MRC Unit on Risk and Resilience in Mental Disorders at Stellenbosch University, explains that “Some cases are quite severe, and in other cases, this condition is barely noticeable.” Trichotillomania can involve varying degrees of awareness and can be broken down into two main categories, though one person
• Automatic hair pulling: This is unintentional hair pulling that the individual engages in without realising that he/she is doing it. This often occurs when the person is bored or engaged in another activity such as watching TV or reading. “The pulling behaviour and its consequences can cause significant distress and may even impair multiple important areas of the individual’s functioning. Hair pullers may resort to wearing wigs, false eyelashes, scarves, hats, special hairstyles and make-up to disguise their bald spots and lack of eyelashes. Many people with TTM have not been to a hairdresser in years because they are afraid of having to explain their

Lizanne Mouton, artistic director and owner at Gary Rom Hair Constantia, gave us some valuable advice for anyone with the condition; “Hair pulling is more common than most people think and our goal is to work within any parameters that make the client feel comfortable – such as being booked at a quieter time or having a chair in a more private area.” If you are not yet ready to go into a salon, Lizanne says, “It is important to be using a shampoo

and conditioner specially formulated for hair loss.” Hair pulling disturbs the hair follicle and repeated damage can slow hair growth. ccording to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, 225 South Africans die of heart disease every day. But 80% of heart disease and strokes can be prevented. These healthy lifestyle habits can lower the risk of such an outcome.
1. Get moving A study published in the journal PLOS Medicine earlier this year found that there’s no end to the heart-health benefits of working up a sweat. Of the more than 90 000 study participants, those who were more active had a lower risk of heart disease – which isn’t unexpected. But, interestingly, the
journal Circulation, people who were newly diagnosed with heart disease and started exercising were able to return to work earlier

2. Eat more veggies You don’t have to go vegan, but a plant-based diet makes your heart happy. WHAT TO DO: Aim to fill half your plate with veggies at mealtimes. And while all veggies are good, a 2018 study in Nutrients found that leafy greens, like spinach and lettuce, and cruciferous veggies – broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts – are your heart’s best friends. Also, add more fruit and whole grains to your shopping trolley for added fibre.
3. Eat less meat most active group also had the lowest risk of heart disease – by between 54 and 63%! That means the heart-health benefits of exercise are uncapped! More good news: even if you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease, it’s not too late to start. According to an article in the

and reported a better quality of life than those who did not exercise. WHAT TO DO: If you’re new to exercise, aim for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)’s recommended 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day.
Recently, there have been claims that red meat might not be as bad for our hearts as we’ve always been led to believe. But, cry the beloved braai, the majority of research on the subject still shows diets high in red meat are strongly associated with heart disease. In an article for Cleveland Clinic, cardiologist Dr Stanley Hazen explains that those recent articles

Hazen goes on to say that there are just too many studies showing an association between the two to be ignored. WHAT TO DO: You can still eat meat, but make it lean. The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends fish, lean mince, skinless chicken and ostrich as heart-friendly options. Save other meats for the occasional treat.

4. Drink less alcohol You may have heard that drinking a glass of wine a day can be good for your heart. The key is in the quantity – a glass. According to cardiologist John McEvoy, too much alcohol can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke and the weakening of the heart muscle. WHAT TO DO: Moderation is key. The Heart and Stroke Foundation
recommends no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks a day for men. “Drink” does not depend on the size of your glass – it’s defined as 340ml beer, 120ml wine, 60ml sherry or 25ml spirits. If you’ve had heart trouble in the past, it’s best to steer clear of alcohol altogether.
5. Lower your stress According to Cleveland Clinic, chronic stress increases the rate at

which plaque accumulates in the arteries, can trigger blood clots and can also cause narrowing of the arteries. WHAT TO DO: You can’t always avoid the source of your stress but learning to manage it will help. Being more physically active, doing breathing exercises and practising mindfulness have all been shown to help reduce stress.
6. Stop smoking According to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, smoking triples your risk of heart disease. WHAT TO DO: Stop. Even smoking one cigarette a day increases your chances of a heart attack. However, when you stop smoking, the benefits are immediate and over time, your risk of heart disease will decrease to that of a non-smoker.
Cholesterol: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s mostly manufactured by the
liver and is transported through your body in your bloodstream. Everyone has cholesterol and, according to an article by Cleveland Clinic, it’s necessary for various bodily functions, including the formation of cell membranes, hormones and bile. You also get “dietary cholesterol” from animal products, such as meat and dairy. The Heart and Stroke Foundation explains that cholesterol is transported in the blood via particles called lipoproteins. High-density lipoprotein (HDL)

removes cholesterol from the blood vessels – that’s why it’s often referred to as “good” cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is called “bad” cholesterol because that’s the type that attaches to the walls of your arteries. Over time, that cholesterol build-up mixes with other substances and forms plaque, which hardens the arteries – a condition called atherosclerosis. As the Heart and Stroke Foundation explains, narrowed arteries can’t deliver enough blood, which can

lead to blood clots, heart attack, stroke and death.
Keeping Cholesterol in Check To keep your cholesterol levels optimal, the Mayo Clinic recommends exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and drinking alcohol only in moderation. They also recommend eating less saturated fat (mostly found in animal products), avoiding all trans fats (look out for “partially
hydrogenated vegetable oil” on food labels) and eating more fibre-rich food, like beans, cruciferous veggies and whole grains, healthy fats – such as avocado, nuts and olive oil – and whey protein.

oney and other bee products were used so extensively in ancient cultures that bees were often described as “heaven sent” in ancient texts. Evidence of beekeeping can be found in rock paintings and hieroglyphs dating as far back as 6000BC. But what is it about bees and their products that had our ancestors abuzz?
Raw Honey
Raw honey is the most natural form of honey and has a huge variety of health benefits when included in your diet. The honey that we find in supermarkets has typically been pasteurised but, unlike dairy products that are pasteurised for safety concerns, honey naturally cannot spoil. Pasteurisation simply delays the natural crystallisation of honey and keeps it looking clear and smooth. As Helena van der Westhuizen of Simply Bee Natural Beeswax Products explains, “Natural ingredients are profoundly effective. Honey for healing

can dissolve into the amount of water it holds, which is bad news for any bacteria or other microorganisms that need water to survive. And honey isn’t the only trick bees have up their sleeves; bees also provide us with other incredible products such as propolis and royal jelly.
Propolis Propolis is a sticky substance made by bees from resin and tree saps and is used by bees in the construction of their beehives. Propolis is jam-packed with compounds such as flavonoids commonly found in foods like green tea and red wine, which we know to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Another special compound found in

propolis is pinocembrin which acts as an antifungal and antimicrobial to protect the beehive. Research has shown that propolis is extremely helpful in wound healing and prevents the growth of bacteria in cuts and burns when used as an antiseptic wash or salve.
Royal Jelly
Royal jelly is an incredibly nutrient-dense, milky substance produced by worker bees and fed to the queen bee. It contains water, proteins, collagen, sugar, fats, salt, vitamins, and minerals
including calcium, iron, potassium, folic acid and amino acids. This powerhouse substance allows queen bees to grow to nearly double the size of worker bees and live much longer lives than all the other bees in the hive. As a dietary supplement, royal jelly is said to boost endurance and combat fatigue and stress, lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol. So it seems our ancestors were definitely on to something when it came to the use of honey - nature really is the best medicine!

f you’ve ever had to stand up in front of a room full of people and make a speech, you’ll know that stress can take your breath away – literally. You may even have had some wellmeaning person tell you to “just breathe and it will be fine”. Well, guess what? They were right. But breathing to combat stress is not just a soothing device, like a toddler’s favourite fluffy toy. How you breathe actually triggers certain chemical responses in your body – which can calm you down or make you feel even more anxious. Learning to control your breath can help you tap into these responses to enjoy a calmer, more stress-free life.
The Science of Breath A quick biology lesson: Your autonomic nervous system controls unconscious functions in your body, like your heartbeat, digestion and breathing. It has two key divisions: The sympathetic nervous system takes over when you go into fight-or-flight mode and when you exercise – the racing heart, shortness of breath and jitters you feel are signs that your body is prepping for action. The parasympathetic nervous system has the opposite effect. According to an article in StatPearls, it controls your “rest and digest” state – in other words, the state you’re in when you’re chilled out and not in any danger. In this

Breathe Your Worries Away Yoga teacher Nokuphiwo Jada, who teaches adults as well as children through Earthchild Project, recommends practising what breathwork practitioners call balloon breath: “Imagine you are filling up your lungs and they look like a balloon,” she says. “Every breath in, you open your lungs and every breath out, you close your lungs.” The goal is to breathe deeply enough so that your lungs expand and you’re not just breathing into your chest.

Calming Breaths Now here’s the interesting part: it goes both ways. When you breathe slowly and deeply, your body assumes you’re safe and at rest, so the parasympathetic nervous system takes over and your body relaxes. According to the journal Medical Hypotheses, it even slows down your heart rate and lowers blood pressure.
Jada says the best way to tap into the stress-relieving benefits of breathing is to make it a regular practice. “It’s like a teaspoon of medicine that you do for your body every day,” she says. “It’s not a miracle that you just do now and you’re ok – you need to do it every day.” Fortunately, we’re not talking hours of sitting around, breathing, while dishes pile up and chaos erupts around you. “Dedicate five minutes,” says Jada. “It can be in your car, in your office, in your kitchen… you can do it anywhere. As long as you are comfortable and in a space where you can breathe fresh air – so open the windows.” She recommends making it a challenge: Commit to five minutes of breathwork a day for five days. Watermelon salad with feta, green olives & Black Forest ham What would Summer be without the aroma and flavour of a crisp, juicy watermelon? We all know this prehistoric-looking fruit can become huge, so we need to get creative by using it in the most imaginative ways. Watermelon and feta work wonderfully together, and I’ve teamed them up with some green olives and smoky Black Forest ham for a summery antipasti salad. Use the best extra virgin olive oil you can find for a generous drizzle at the end.
750 ml–1 litre (3–4 cups) diced or sliced watermelon (try to take out most of the seeds) 2 rounds feta cheese, sliced or crumbled 125 ml (½ cup) green olives (preferably pitted) about 80 g finely sliced Black Forest ham, torn into smaller slivers 30–45 ml (2–3 tablespoons) extra virgin olive oil a splash of balsamic vinegar, to serve freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Arrange the watermelon, feta, olives and ham on a wide serving platter, then drizzle with olive oil, add a splash of balsamic and top generously with black pepper. Serve with more balsamic vinegar on the side – it really lifts the salad!

3 large tomatoes, halved horizontally about 300g cherry tomatoes (keep them on the vine if you can) 400 g feta cheese, rounds left whole 1 whole head of garlic, halved horizontally a few sprigs fresh thyme, woody stalks discarded salt and pepper, to taste 10 ml (2 teaspoons) sugar 60 ml (1⁄4 cup) extra virgin olive oil 10 ml fresh lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and oil a standard-size baking tray. Arrange the large tomatoes cut side up on the tray, then add the cherry tomatoes, feta, garlic and thyme. Season well with salt and pepper, sprinkle the tomatoes with sugar, then drizzle all over with olive oil. Squeeze some lemon juice over the feta. Bake for 45 minutes until the feta and garlic are golden. Remove from the oven and serve warm or at room temperature.
Tomato, feta, and garlic traybake I first had this dish at my good friend Edith Thiart’s house many years ago. I was so inspired by this bold way of serving tomatoes and cheese – a simple dish filled with just the ‘cool stuff’ and none of the things that you think you need to add in there. After blogging about it, the photograph that Tasha and I created became one of the most ‘pinned’ shots of our careers. Here’s my recipe, inspired by Barbara Joubert’s original recipe via Sarie Kos.

Pan-fried fish piccata with butter, capers, lemon & parsley Economical and sustainable fish fillets like hake or tilapia are perfect for this Italian-inspired recipe. Piccata flavours are buttery, salty and punchy, and will leave you licking the pan. Serve warm, with a shredded green salad and boiled baby potatoes, or a few slices of crusty bread to mop up the pan sauce.
600 g hake or basa or tilapia fillets, trimmed and mostly boneless salt and pepper, to taste 60 ml (¼ cup) cake flour or white bread flour, for dusting 30 ml (2 tablespoons) olive oil 80 ml (1⁄3 cup) dry white wine 45 ml (3 tablespoons) freshly squeezed lemon juice 30 ml (2 tablespoons) baby capers 30–45 ml (2–3 tablespoons) butter a handful fresh Italian parsley, finely chopped
Use kitchen paper to pat the fish fillets dry, then season them with salt and pepper. Place the flour in a wide bowl, then dust the fillets on both sides with flour, shaking off any excess. Heat the olive oil in a wide non-stick pan over medium heat and fry the fillets on both sides until just cooked (work in batches, if necessary). Remove the fish from the pan and set aside, then add the wine to the pan and stir to deglaze any sticky bits, still using medium heat. Add the lemon juice, capers and butter and stir, bringing to a simmer, while the sauce thickens slightly and the butter melts completely. After about a minute, remove from the heat and stir in the parsley, then spoon the sauce over the fish fillets and serve immediately.

Dark chocolate ganache tart with raspberries & blackberries We live on a berry farm in Stellenbosch. During Spring and Summer, the slender trees in the orchards hang heavy with plump blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. In our backyard, there’s a large old mulberry tree, so we have an abundance of the finest fresh berries to go round. Fresh, slightly tart berries are the perfect partner for this simple chocolate ganache tart. You’ll only need a sliver because of the utter decadence, so the tart goes a long way.
1 packet (200 g) Baker’s Nuttikrust Biscuits (caramel oats biscuits) 60 g (¼ cup) butter, melted 250 ml (1 cup) cream peeled zest of ½ an orange, cut into strips (not grated) 250–300 g dark chocolate, chopped (I prefer a 50–70% cocoa content) 250–350 g fresh berries of your choice (raspberries, blackberries) icing sugar, sifted, to serve (optional)
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and spray a 23 cm fluted loose-bottomed tart tin with non-stick spray. Place the cookies in a food processor and process to fine crumbs. Add the butter and process until mixed, then transfer the crumbs to the prepared tin. Using a cup with a flat bottom (I use a measuring cup), flatten the crumbs evenly on the bottom and onto the sides. Bake for 10 minutes, then set aside to cool. In a small saucepan, add the cream. Use your fingers to bend and bruise the orange rind to release the oils in the skin, then add it to the cream. Heat until it just starts to simmer, then remove the pan from the heat at once and remove the orange rind with a slotted spoon. Add the chopped chocolate and leave to melt for a few minutes (still off the heat), then stir with a spatula until fully melted, smooth and glossy. Pour the warm chocolate mixture into the prepared tart base, then chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour. To serve, remove the tart from the fridge and carefully remove the fluted side of the tin. Top with fresh berries, and sprinkle with a little sifted icing sugar if you want to. Serve cool but not cold, almost at room temperature – it will literally melt in your mouth.

outh Africa in summer cannot be rivalled, but when the mercury soars, it can be a struggle to stay cool, calm and collected – especially when running around after little ones. Whilst it’s tempting to simply crank up the air conditioning or drape yourself on top of the nearest fan there are plenty of other ways to buffer your home from the heat. Here, we look at the newest and most innovative ways to keep cool, no matter how fierce the sun is.
Spend Wisely As tempting as it is just to purchase another fan when facing a heatwave, permanent improvements pay dividends in more ways than one. “By replacing or installing insulation in roofs, lofts and wall cavities and fixing any draughty windows or doors you’ll need less additional cooling solutions but will also reap the rewards all year round, “ says Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, Adrian Goslett. “Doing a complete ecooverhaul could be expensive though,” he adds. “Instead, try to make swaps slowly and upgrade items for more sustainable options over time.” The bonus, Goslett reassures, is that these improvements will not only be reflected in the temperature of your home but its value too.
Throwing Shade A natural sun hat for your home, green roofs are a beautiful way to support wildlife and help keep the house cool. According to Vertical Landscapes, the lush vegetation combined with the membrane in

a green roof provides shading, insulation and evaporative cooling. In fact, research shows that the area under a green roof is 15 degrees Celsius below that of a standard roof. It’s a similar story for vertical gardens with the greenery also providing windows with much-needed shade at the same time. If that’s too big a project, plan to plant some trees or tall plants outside - or even install an awning to north-facing windows - to provide some much-needed shade.
Window Dressing It’s a natural response to fling your doors and windows open on a hot day. Whilst this is an ideal move in the evening, to keep hot air out during the day, close things up instead. Moreover, keep windows covered with shutters or black-out blinds to block out the sun’s powerful rays. However, we all need a little fresh air. Plantation
Water Wise From water features in the garden to filled bowls under window sills, water can help cool hot air by injecting some moisture into the air. Plants and trees work in much the same way – consider the humble house plant a natural air conditioner and you will benefit from its stress-reducing benefits too. “Keep a spray bottle in the refrigerator and when the going gets hot, give yourself a good spray,” suggests Vicki Murray from Fourways Group. “It’s a simple but effective way to use thermal regulation to your benefit. Spritzing your wrists first helps as it quickly cools down the blood flowing through your veins to your heart”.
Go Off-Grid Switch appliances off to shave a few degrees off the internal temperature of your home. “If you are working on a laptop, do not leave it plugged in - charge it

Smart Solutions An inverter is another clever investment adds Murray. “An inverter air conditioning unit works with a self-regulating motor,” she explains. “They’re able to self-

detected for a period time, the air conditioner automatically shuts off.” Smart Apps also let you control your air conditioning remotely so can be judicious about when it’s in use. Remember that no air conditioner can work efficiently if the doors or windows are wide open. Third Alliance Model The Toyota Rumion represents the third product of the Toyota and Suzuki strategic alliance. Following the Starlet and Urban Cruiser, which have achieved significant sales success in just a short space of time, the Toyota Rumion is poised to follow in its siblings’ footsteps.
Concept & Design The newcomer keeps the same product concept, compact dimensions, a four-cylinder petrol engine, seven-seater layout, and good ground clearance. A noteworthy change is the switch to a front-wheel-drive layout - which brings with it improved fuel economy, better packaging and reduced mechanical componentry. The front design employs a trapezoidal radiator grille, with the familiar three-horizontal-slat design and centrally mounted Toyota ellipse. These are flanked by large,
tapered headlamps with a large lower apron, which houses stylised air vents and fog lamp surrounds (where fitted). The stylised lower bumper mimics the front design, adding a sense of cohesion and width.
Engine & Transmission All Toyota Rumion models employ the 1.5-litre K15B engine which delivers 77kW and 138Nm. Both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmissions are offered (grade-dependant). The fuel consumption figure checks in at 6.2 l/100 km (a slight improvement over the 1.5 Avanza) for both transmission types. CO2 emissions register as 146 and 147 g/km, while top speed is quoted as 175 and 170 km/h km, for the manual and auto respectively.

and TX. The S-grade model is aimed at customers requiring pure functional use at a low price point, the SX offers a balance between affordability and comfort, while the TX grade is aimed at the leisure buyer requiring enhanced comfort and convenience.
Wheels & Tyres S-grade models are fitted with steel wheels shod with 185-65 R15 tyres. SX variants use the same size with stylised hubcaps while the TX models feature 15” alloy wheels. All models have a full-size spare wheel.
Safety & Security All grades feature driver and passenger airbags, ABS, EBD as well as ISOFIX points. An immobiliser and alarm are also included across the board.

he Garden Route is one South Africa’s most iconic and popular destinations for both local and international travellers. This 300-kilometer stretch of coastal road on SA’s southern coast, officially beginning in Mossel Bay and ending in Storms River is considered as one of the country’s most beautiful areas with its plethora of wetlands, lakes, mountains, woodlands, varied vegetation, wild animals and beaches found along its winding roads. The seaside resort town Plettenberg Bay or ‘Plett’ is situated about 520km from Cape Town and is known as the Jewel of the Garden Route. It is no wonder local

holidaymakers and international tourists love this resort town as it has so much on offer with its Blue Flag pristine beaches, excellent accommodation, oh-so-delicious food, amazing views and endless things-to-do, and it even has its own wine route. Plett does have a very temperate climate and has rain throughout the year. The good news is that a very high percentage of that rain falls in darkness hours. Our family and I have spent quite a bit of time in this town and surrounds but on a recent trip to Plett I had the opportunity to experience it in a totally different way. My trip was made better by travelling safely and in style in the Ford Tourneo with lots of luggage
and leg room, automatic for easy overtaking – perfect for a family road trip.

The accommodation includes 14 luxury rooms ranging from mountain and sea facing to deluxe, presidential and honeymoon suites each with their own private terrace and no expense was spared with the up-market room finishings. comforts such as air-conditioning and underfloor heating, fluffy bathrobes, pure cotton percale bedding and mini bar to name but a few. My absolute favourite feature was having a Nespresso machine in my room ready to make a cup of java whenever I felt like a pick-me-up. The hotel also offers Villa One @Sky and a stunning cottage – both adequately and extravagantly equipped for families or groups of friends wanting to have a more secluded getaway. Sky Villa is the perfect place to feel like royalty or to treat that special person away from the hustle and bustle.

many beaches, 6 of them with ‘blue flag’ status, here’s three of my favourites: Lookout beach is the perfect spot to swim safely with lifeguards nearby, and surf whilst enjoying views of the Keurbooms River and the mountains in the distance. Central beach near Beacon Island Resort is popular amongst locals and families. It is the beach for events in Plett during the December holidays and if you like a bit of a buzz and don’t mind bigger crowds than this is the beach for you. Robberg beaches are numbered such as Robberg 5 and are perfect
for a more chilled vibe. This 5km stretch of sandy beach from the Beacon Island Hotel to Robberg Nature Reserve is the ideal spot for long relaxing strolls and you may even be lucky enough to pick up a pansy shell. Visitors often spot dolphins, seals, and whales from the shore, and at low tide, it is possible to see the shipwreck Athena that sank in 1967. During peak season you will see lifeguards at selected points along the beach. Do yourself a favour and pop into The Bungalow (also part of RAW Africa Boutique Collection) at Hobie beach for a sundowner and
This family-owned restaurant situated in the heart of Plett offers a well-balanced menu with a variety of burgers, seafood, grills and more. It is an absolute must for anyone looking for tasty food, complimented by a good atmosphere and great service. They also have a well-stocked bar. Each item we ordered was delicious and beautifully plated. I can definitely recommend the Baby Sole and Calamari combo followed by the Salted Caramel Popcorn Cheesecake. Portions are generous and money well spent, good vibe.

and head off to Offshore Adventures at Central Beach who offer an array of adventures to suit your needs. They supply you with a life jacket, wetsuit and snorkelling gear and after a safety briefing you head on down to the beach to embark on your ocean excursion. Your launch straight from the beach is quite a thrill and after a short 10-15minute boat ride you arrive at the Robberg seal colony. You are greeted by the cutest little seal pups overtaken by their curiosity and they want to meet you. These beautiful and playful creatures will play in the water around you and when you dive, they will dive with you. This is a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed!
Do an MCC Tasting at Bramon Wines Nestled in The Crags, just outside of Plettenberg Bay overlooking the Tsitsikamma Mountains, Bramon Wine Estate was the first wine farm in this most eastern wine area of the Western Cape. Go and share an unforgettable moment at their restaurant situated amongst the vineyards, sipping on their award winning MCC bubblies accompanied by unpretentious food with a focus and emphasis on freshness and flavour. The fresh tapas style food chaperoned by their freshly baked bread is sheer magic with a glass of their MCC Sauvignon Blanc. The wine farm is family and dog friendly.
Dare to Fly Thrillseekers or adrenalin junkies, look no further than the Knysna Ziplines (with SA Forest Adventures). Extremely long cables crisscross the gorge at the Kranshoek SANParks picnic site with heights of over 200 meters above sea level. This is the longest and highest zipline in the Garden Route which is made up of four separate lines and has you gliding over the treetops, giving you spectacular views of the surrounding forest, natural landscapes, waterfalls and ocean at a relative speed! The optional six line cable tour adds an extralong 800 meter to the adventure. You will be in the capable hands of your very experienced guides ready to make this a memorable experience. I would recommend this as a family activity for young and old. Enquire about the age and weight limit when making your booking. This is not to be confused with the Canopy tour which starts in Storm’s River Village and goes through the forest. Spending plenty of time in the area is essential because there is just so much to see and do.

ade up of seven emirates, most people never explore outside of Dubai, but beyond the audacious skyline is a gentle, cultured country that honours its Bedouin past and beckons you to adventure into the secrets in its sands.
Let’s get the housekeeping out of the way:
1. It’s Hot! In the peak of summer, it reaches up to 50°c. November to February is idyllic. 2. It’s safe Abu Dhabi and Dubai are frequently ranked amongst the safest cities in the world. Residents are known to leave their Louis Vuitton totes on tables when they wander off as a means of reserving their place. Stories of cab drivers returning forgotten phones aren’t uncommon. 3. It’s an Islamic Country Although the UAE is less conservative than some of the neighbouring Islamic nations, visitors are still expected to dress and behave respectfully. Be polite. Be modest. Vulgar language, rude gesturing with hands, drunk and disorderly conduct and public displays of affection can get the traveller into trouble. The general rule for ladies is to keep their knees and

shoulders covered. For men, shorts are permitted, although some establishments will require long pants. Kids can dress as they please. There is zero tolerance for drinking and driving. 4. It’s family-friendly If you have infants or young children, you’ll definitely feel seen in the UAE. Baby changing rooms and family restrooms are standard throughout the country. Sidewalks and public spaces are all stroller-friendly. And yes, you absolutely may breastfeed your baby on the go. Kids will be spoilt for choice in terms of theme parks, play centres, and outdoor activities. And if you’re

hoping to slip up the Burj for a drink after sunset, childcare is excellent, available, and regulated. 5. Brunch Most hotels and licensed eateries host Friday brunches. A set fee can be paid for you to enjoy 4 hours of all-you-can-eat and drink packages. Usually, they run from 12 pm – 4 pm. Some hotels are now doing night-time brunches. They’re an absolute institution in the in the UAE. Brunches are, in fact, becoming synonymous with the Emirates. (The St. Regis on Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi is highly recommended. Also, Zero Gravity in Dubai.)

Arabian nights. And days. No trip to The UAE is complete without a desert safari. These can be arranged through a number of tour vendors. Desert safaris can include dune driving/ bashing, quad biking, camel experiences, belly dancing, falconer and more. You can select from day trips, night visits or overnight stays. If a luxurious desert retreat appeals to you you’d be spoilt to check in to Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort. Situated in the flame-coloured dunes of the majestic Empty Corner (the world’s largest sand desert), this plush oasis is nestled an easy drive between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
