Cracking the cellulite code C
an we prevent cellulite? At this moment, no one has come up with a prevention plan for the problem, although many doctors will say avoiding salt, fatty foods and maintaining a healthy balanced diet -- along with exercise will go a long way to slowing down the cellulite assault!
Cellulite is one of those problems that affect about 90% of women over the age of thirty. If you ever wondered why men don’t complain about it as much as women do, it’s because women with our
Hormones are identified as the main cause of cellulite, fat cells get trapped in the collagen and elastin fibres, resulting in that unwelcomed lumpy appearance, there’s also a good chance that cellulite is hereditary. Whatever the reason for it, there’s no easy quick fix, but there are a lot of ways in order to reduce and perhaps be rid of cellulite altogether.
beautiful curvaceous figures have more subcutaneous fat cells than the average man. Unfortunately for us, it’s not difficult to find an area on your lower body that reveals the tell tale signs commonly known
The cosmetic industry, recognizing the fact that women are plagued with this problem, has worked hard to convince us it has the answer in creams and cosmeceuticals. The good thing is, in Europe, cellulite has been studied and researched to oblivion, in actual fact the term “cellulite” (which is not a medical term) originated in France more than 150 years ago
as “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” skin. We hate it, it’s there and we want to get rid of it, so finding a solution to cellulite was not only a challenge, but a mission.

and scientists have learned a lot about what does and does not work in the fight against it.
It is always a good option to combine
Two important things to remember are one; cellulite has nothing to do with being overweight, it makes no difference what weight you are, if you are a woman, you are predisposed to getting it and two, liposuction has no real effect on cellulite.

following solutions. You will be able to see a visible improvement faster and it will last a lot longer. Sometimes, it is the exercise and diet that makes all the
Important Note: The fat that causes us to become overweight is located far below the skin which our bodies use to fuel energy. Cellulite is comprised of fat cells within the skin which are not as easily burned. “Septa” are fibrous bands of tissue that surround the cells and keep them in place, as we age this “septa” can get rigid and press down on the fat cells, which in turn push up through the spaces of fibre creating the mattress phenomenon. Keep in mind as horrible as it looks to us, it is harmless.
difference to any procedure or treatment and in the case of cellulite even more so.
So, what are our options for cellulite removal? There are several different levels of cellulite that will require different levels of treatment: Stage 0 – Even when skin is pinched you will not see dimples Stage 1 – Only when you pinch the skin you will see cellulite Stage 2 – You visibly see cellulite when standing, but not when lying down Stage 3 – No matter what position you are in, cellulite is visible Obviously, if you have less visible cellulite then your options are far greater than cellulite stages 2 & 3. However, the options for more visible cellulite have grown considerably over the last twenty years and even though Mesotherapy may not be as readily available everywhere, in Europe specialists claim to have perfected the treatment. Endermologie – Your Spa Option! Isn’t it nice to think that a day at the spa will not only be a relaxing treat, but also relieve your body of cellulite? Endermologie was developed in France more than twenty years ago by a French engineer named Louis Paul Guitay. During his physical therapy he received treatment that involved manual skin rolling to help heal contracted scars, he decided that based on the same principles he could manufacture a computer powered mechanical device to create a rhythmical suction and rolling to the area of treatment as well as the soft tissue underneath. Several uses of this machine showed a marked improvement on overall skin texture and a visible reduction of cellulite. It is the first and only patented FDA approved device shown to have a discernable impact on cellulite. Not only does it improve skin

Mesotherapy – Your Cosmetic Surgery Option France has always been renowned for producing the beauty innovators of the world and it’s no surprise they would be at the forefront of most cellulite therapy treatments. French physician Dr. Michel Pistor discovered that injecting a mixture of medications and vitamins just beneath the skin would effectively treat a variety of conditions, including but not limited to, vascular diseases and sports trauma as well as improve circulation. It was apparent soon after, the injections were also having a positive effect on fat disruption and later became frequently used in aesthetic indications.
texture and appearance, but it also helps sculpt and tone your body, increases circulation and reduces muscle pain. Endermologie uses two adjustable rollers and controlled suction to gently fold and unfold the skin for smooth consistent deep tissue massage. It is a non surgical method that decreases the subcutaneous fat and increases blood flow and lymphatic drainage. Ultimately excess fluid is diminished and cellular function is restored, leaving a smoother skin surface. The treatment takes between 35 to 45 minutes and improves circulation by 200%, usually a body stocking is worn and the experience is surprisingly invigorating. You generally need anywhere from 10 to 20 sessions to notice the overall difference to your shape and it will last if you keep up the treatment once a month and try to maintain a healthy diet.
Mesotherapy has actually been around for over 50 years, but is now widely available in several different cocktails of medications and some are even completely homeopathic. The procedure entails a series of injections in the area you want treated but it is best advised to limit yourself to only one treatment at a time. For example; even though you might have cellulite on your thighs, hips and abdomen, make sure you only choose one of those areas to work on first. The injections are meant to disperse fat cells and disintegrate the rigid septa
Most five star hotels & spas offer this service, but there are also beauty salons and cosmetic surgeries that specialize in Endermologie.

bands, resulting in a smoother appearance on the skins surface. The injections themselves are more annoying than painful; however, they can result in inflammation, redness and burning an hour after the treatment. These symptoms can last between 1 – 3 days but if you take a dose of Benadryl every 6 hours it does help. The redness and burning sensation should be gone quickly, but swelling might remain for a while, especially where you had the injection, so make sure you don’t have another treatment until the symptoms have completely disappeared. It is strongly recommended to go to a practicing Cosmetic Surgery facility, although most beauty spas that offer any type of injection can also administer Mesotherapy. Remember to not take any medications without the prior advice from your physician. Cosmeceuticals Who hasn’t been to the beauty counter and seen a plethora of creams and lotions promising to wipe away cellulite? For sure there are a lot more available today than ever before, the key however to most of these products is the application. Common sense tells us that using moisturising products will soften our skin and if they contain anti-ageing properties then in theory your skin will improve its overall texture. The fact is; the act of applying the product does more good for cellulite more often than the actual product, as it is in the massaging and kneading where you reap the real benefits. So, many options are available to us although they will have different results on each individual basis, so you can’t write off a treatment that doesn’t work on a friend unless you have the same genetic make-up and level of cellulite. Try what suits you best and bear in mind you are not alone, it is almost impossible to find a woman over 30 that doesn’t have this same issue.

alle Berry is an American actress, former fashion model, and beauty queen. Berry received an Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and an NAACP Image award for Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and won an Academy Award for Best Actress and was also nominated for a BAFTA Award in 2001 for her performance in Monster’s Ball, becoming the first and, as of 2009, only woman of African American descent to have won the award for Best Actress. She is one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood and also a Revlon spokeswoman. She has also been involved in the production side of several of her films. Divorced from baseball player David Justice and musician Eric Benét, Berry dated French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry from November, 2005, through April, 2010. Their daughter, Nahla Ariela Aubry, was born on March 16, 2008. Berry was born Maria Halle Berry, though her name was legally changed to Halle Maria Berry in 1971. Berry’s parents divorced when she was four years old; she and her older sister Heidi were raised exclusively by her mother. Berry has said in published reports that she has been estranged from her father since her childhood, noting in 1992, “I haven’t heard from him since [he left]. Maybe he’s not alive.”
Before becoming an actress, Berry entered several beauty contests, finishing runner-up in the Miss USA (1986), and winning the Miss USA World 1986 title. Her breakthrough feature film role was in the 1991 Jungle Fever. This led to roles in The Flintstones, Bulworth, X-Men and its sequels, and as Bond Girl Jinx in Die Another Day. She also won a worst actress Razzie Award in 2005 for Catwoman and accepted the award in person.
Berry graduated from Bedford High School, afterward working in the children’s department at Higbee’s Department store. She then studied at Cuyahoga Community College. In the 1980s, she entered several beauty contests, winning Miss Teen All-American in 1985 and Miss Ohio USA in 1986. She was the 1986 Miss USA first runner-up to. In the Miss USA 1986 pageant interview competition, she said she hoped to become an entertainer or to have something to do with the media. Her interview was awarded the highest score by the judges. She was the first African-American Miss World entrant in 1986. In 1989, during the taping of the short-lived television series Living Dolls, Berry lapsed into a coma and was diagnosed with diabetes type 1. In the late 1980s, Berry went to Illinois to pursue a modeling career as well as acting. One of her first acting projects was

a television series for local cable by Gordon Lake Productions called Chicago Force. In 1989, Berry landed the role of Emily Franklin in the short-lived ABC television series Living Dolls. She went on to have a recurring role on the long running serial Knots Landing. In 1992, Berry was cast as the love interest in the video for R. Kelly’s seminal single, Honey Love. Her breakthrough feature film role was in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever, in which she played a drug addict named Vivian. Her first co-starring role was in the 1991 film Strictly Business. In 1992, Berry portrayed a career woman who falls for Eddie Murphy in the romantic comedy Boomerang. That same year, she caught the public’s attention as a headstrong biracial slave in the TV adaptation of Queen: The Story of an American Family, based on the book by Alex Haley. Berry was in the live-action Flintstones movie as “Sharon Stone”, the sultry secretary who seduced Fred Flintstone. In 2001, Berry appeared as Leticia Musgrove, the wife of an executed murderer, in the film Monster’s Ball. Her performance was awarded the National Board of Review and the Screen Actors Guild prizes, and in an interesting coincidence she became the first African-American woman to receive a Best Leading Actress Academy Award (earlier in her career she portrayed Dorothy Dandridge, the first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Actress). Her role also generated controversy. Berry’s graphic, nude love scene with a racist character played by co-star Billy Bob Thornton was the subject of much media chatter and discussion among African-Americans. Many in the African-American community were critical of Berry for taking the part. Berry responded: “I don’t really see a reason to ever go that far again. That was a unique movie. That scene was special and pivotal and needed to be there, and it would be a really special script that would require something like that again.” Berry asked for a higher fee for Revlon advertisements after winning the Academy Award, and Ron Perelman, the cosmetics firm’s chief, congratulated her, saying how happy he was that she modeled for his company. She replied, “Of course, you’ll have to pay me more.” Perelman stalked off in a rage.
On receiving the Award for Best Leading Actress Academy Award, NAACP issued the statement: “Congratulations to Halle Berry and Denzel Washington for giving us hope and making us proud. If this is a
Berry portrayed the mutant superhero Storm in the film adaptation of the comic book series X-Men and its sequels, X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand. After turning down numerous roles that required nudity, she said she decided to make Swordfish because her husband, Benét, supported her and encouraged her to take risks.

Her win at the Academy Awards led to a famous “Oscar moment.” In accepting her award, she gave an acceptance speech honoring previous black actresses who had never had the opportunity. She said, “This moment is so much bigger than me. This is for every nameless, faceless woman of color who now has a chance tonight because this door has been opened.”

In 2001, Berry appeared in the film Swordfish, which featured her first on-screen nude scene. At first, she refused to be filmed topless in a sunbathing scene, but she changed her mind when Warner Brothers raised her fee substantially. The brief flash of her breasts added $500,000 to her fee.
Berry has been married twice. Her first marriage was to former baseball player David Justice, shortly after midnight on January 1, 1993. The couple separated in 1996 and their divorce was finalized in 1997. Justice played with the Atlanta Braves and experienced a measure of fame as the team rose to prominence in the early 1990s. The couple found it difficult to maintain their relationship while he was playing baseball and she was filming elsewhere. Berry has stated publicly that she was so depressed after her breakup with Justice that she considered taking her own life, but she could not bear the thought of her mother finding her body. Berry’s second marriage was to musician Eric Benét. They met in 1997 and married in early 2001 on a beach in Santa Barbara. Berry credited Benét with support after she was involved in a February 2000 traffic collision, in which she suffered a concussion and left the scene of the accident before the police arrived. Some in the media complained that her misdemeanor hit and run charge was preferential treatment; she had also been the driver in an alleged hit and run incident three years earlier in which no charges were filed. The incident became fodder for comedians. Berry pled no contest, did community service, paid a fine and was placed on three years’ probation. A civil lawsuit was settled out of court. The couple separated in 2003. After the separation, Berry stated, “I want love, and I will find it, hopefully.” While married to Benét, Berry adopted his daughter, India. Their divorce was finalized in January 2005. Berry has been a victim of domestic violence, and now works to help other victims. In 2005, she said, “Domestic violence is something I’ve known about since I was a child. My mother was a victim of it. Early on in my life I made choices, and I chose men that were abusive because that was what I knew growing up...First time it happened, I knew enough to keep moving.”

In November 2005, Berry began dating French-Canadian supermodel Gabriel Aubry, nine years her junior. The couple met at a Versace photoshoot. After six months with Aubry, she stated in an interview, “I’m really happy in my personal life, which is a novelty to me. You know, I’m not the girl that has the best relationships.”
At one point, Berry had indicated that she planned to adopt children, but her experience playing a mother in Things We Lost In The Fire opened her mind to
At one time, Berry indicated that she did not intend to marry again, insisting the couple’s life was already complete without the need for a marriage. She has stated that she hopes to have a second child right away. Aubry recently told In Touch magazine, “I’d like Nahla to have a sibling in 2009.”

On April 30, 2010, it was reported that Berry and Aubry had separated. Berry’s representative confirmed their relationship had ended a few days later by saying, “They have been split for some time, but remain friends and committed parents to their daughter.” They worked out a financial and 50/50 custody deal with a family lawyer, but a celebrity website reported that it is not final. The source said, “As much as it can be it’s been an amicable split. They both traveled a lot for work anyway, so they were used to spending time apart for long periods, but I think Halle has taken it pretty badly; she truly loved Gabriel and thought she had found the one.”

Guests luxuriate in sumptuous, spacious accommodations and villas with outstanding personal services and features. But that’s not all, the resort and dining options offer an amazing new type of ‘Culinary Cuisine’. The personable and dynamic GM, Andreas Kraemer, explained the resort is part of KC Hotels & Resorts International - an international investment group and mother company based in the UK. KC Resort & Over Water Villas is the first project and KC Beach & Pool Villas is their second. The current and coming success of the two properties have paved the way for Bangkok, Ho Chi Min City and Kiev 4 and 5-star properties to appear on the drawing board. GM Andreas worked in the Maldives prior to his 3 & ½ years at Six Senses Hideaway on Koh Samui as Resort Manager and later as acting General Manager. He says, “It was then time to move on and create our own brand; a very exciting time for every true hotelier, especially with the right people joining together to push through to a common goal.” When asked to reflect on what is unusual and unique about the resort, Andreas’ words flow easily as the property has much to offer. Becoming a big hit with locals as well as visitors, is the cuisine, he reports: “The cuisine is definitely unique, this is thanks to our Executive Chef Ryan Dadufalza – Asia’s newest talent. The Guam-born Chef is no stranger to the culinary scene on Samui, previously heading up the kitchen at Dining on the Rocks at Six Senses Hideaway Samui for three years, winning many of the top culinary awards in Asia and across the globe. Chef Ryan has made innovations in the concept of fine dining by embracing the locality and seasonality of food on Samui. Among the special offerings the GM notes, is, “the most exclusive dessert outside of Bangkok, featuring Kopi Luwak, the world’s most expensive coffee! Chef Ryan will be a major factor at the new KC Beach Resort when opening his restaurant; Cow meets Caviar, introducing a modern slant to traditional beach dining on Chaweng. The new restaurant at KC Beach Resort will feature a sophisticated menu, offering gastronomic niceties such as dry aged prime beef and signature sauces, all prepared in-house. Dining guests will also enjoy a walk-in wine cellar and special Ham & Cheese Room. Throw in a full blown Chef’s Counter and one-of-a-kind Chef’s Table, where guests will be guided through a culinary tour by the Chef himself, and have a unique and captivating culinary experience. Chef Ryan’s attention to detail and personable character make for an unforgettable meal.
The remarkable cuisine at the KC Resort and Over Water Villas View Restaurant & Wine Lounge offers a fresh new concept where guests experience home-crafted cuisine like no other. This is where famed master chef Ryan takes simple food to an inspired level of palate pleasing pleasure. The View offers fantastic fare, a fresh breeze, a panoramic view and tranquility in the heart of Chaweng.
Another unique feature, reports the GM, is the KC Wellness Brand; an incredible compilation of treatments and services which involves incorporating three therapists from different walks-of-life, each with their own specialization. The trio brings together: mediation, therapy, kinesiology, life mapping, guidance, activity and local culture: “We are combining our traditional massages with the skill pool of these three extra special individuals. Guests will enjoy new cultural experiences combined with professional wellness activities. This might be ‘Yoga on the Beach’, ‘Temple Tour with Meditation’ or ‘Hiking to a Waterfall & Life Mapping’.
A state of the art spa with indoor and outdoor treatment areas is the locale of an open air floating pool with Dead Sea salts for WATSU treatments performed by KC’s own WATSU specialist, Dr. Serge. One way to describe the in-water magical and healthful treatment, according to Dr. Serge Landrieu, is “dancing with water”.
A second attraction opening soon is the Dr. Serge Yoga Retreat in collaboration with KC. The yoga retreat will incorporate his medical background as a qualified doctor. Dr. Serge says, “We will assess each student individually to ensure each teaching will be tailor-made and our students have the correct dietary requirements to ensure they each have the correct energy and concentration levels to support the actual session. Yoga classes will be custom made to fit each student’s time schedule and wallet in this new program on Samui.

relatively new city that sprung up in the arid but glorious desert of the American West, Las Vegas is a place that inspired the great Elvis Presley to sing the word ‘Viva’ with a genuinely sincere energy. Since its birth it has been a city that people love to celebrate and Elvis, like so many other great entertainment figures, picked up on the zeitgeist. Shows, blackjack, nightlife and neon lit architecture that borrows from all over the globe, give this city a unique party character. It’s where Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe lived, loved and played in the glorious post-war years when the Hollywood film industry was at its classic height. It’s where couples came to from far and wide to get married on the fly. A town of fun, dreams and glitter accompanied by the never ending clunk of slot machines delivering adrenaline and hope to those who may not have adequately studied the actual statistics of winning against the house.
One thing that you can’t help but notice on arrival is that, it’s hot. Las Vegas is in the middle of the desert and the summer is blistering. The temperature reaches way over 100ºF, but the air is dry so the humidity remains low. This can be deceptive and it is vital that you keep your fluid intake up, because however much you perspire, you will stay dry. Winter is a bit cooler with temperatures reaching a very pleasant maximum 70ºF.
This desert city came into being in 1905 and remained a relatively small settlement until a combination of events conspired to transform it into the entertainment capital it has now become. The construction of the Hoover Dam in 1928 on the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona brought thousands of workers to the area. By the time it

was finished in 1936, it was the world’s largest hydroelectric structure. In 1931 Nevada legalised gambling, and what is now downtown Las Vegas became an entertainment center for the dam workers, with casinos, saloons and more. In 1941 Vegas took a big step up when the deluxe El Rancho Vegas resort opened on what is now the Las Vegas Strip. Organised crime boss, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel later opened the Flamingo Hotel in 1946. This signaled the start of a frantic building boom characterised by a cutthroat one-upmanship that would see the rapid creation of the fantasy world structures that glitter up and down the Strip today. These days there are more than 100 hotels in Las Vegas. On the Las Vegas Strip, the most popular hotels include Caesars Palace, the Sahara, the Paris Las Vegas, the Venetian, the Hard Rock, the Mirage, the Bellagio, the Mandalay and the MGM Grand Bay. In Las Vegas the words ‘hotel’ and ‘casino’ are interchangeable. Each of these palatial structures also offers any and every form of organised and legal gambling known to man. These places are also more than just hotels and casinos. Each one is a themed edifice drawing inspiration from, or directly copying, some of the world’s most famous sites – Paris, Luxor, Venice and the Sahara Desert all get a show on the strip, shimmering at night like a confused geography lesson from a kid’s cartoon picture book.
The Venetian.
The Bellagio.
Take a stroll down the strip after dark and marvel at this neon wonderland. Begin at Luxor and work your way on past each hotel – everyone different and spectacular in its own way. You’ll pass the must-see New York-New York on your way (complete with a replica of the Statue of Liberty), and if your stamina holds out, you will end up at Circus Circus where there are live acrobat acts performing overhead while you gamble. Make a stop en route to take in the Sirens show at Treasure Island and then see The Mirage volcano erupt or marvel at the choreographed waterfountain ballet at Bellagio. The inside of each lavish hotelcasino is more amazing and breathtaking than the last. Just when you think they can’t possibly do better, they surprise you. From Venice to ancient Egypt, from a tropical rainforest to a replica of the Eiffel Tower. From New York City to the super-deluxe Wynn Las Vegas it is all incredibly colourful and incredibly ‘Vegas’.
New York, New York.
And what of the central activity of gambling itself? The choice is, of course, mind-boggling. If you are only going to try one, Caesars Palace remains a primary example of classic Las Vegas decadence. It is one of the originals and few casinos can match it for atmosphere. Apart from Caesars, some of the best poker games can be found at the legendary Golden Nugget in Downtown,

spectacular landscape. The Grand Canyon – a wonder of the world – is only an hour and a half drive away. There is also horseback riding around the nearer Eldorado Canyon, a place that, for decades, was the rough and ready domain of hardened miners, the scene of notorious claim jumping, feuds and shootings during the wild years of its frontier past. The horseback riding here features views of the Colorado River. The trails you ride were originally used for mule driven ore carts that carried precious minerals to the river. From the vantage point of your saddle, you’ll see old mines dating back to 19th Century, and can envision the backbreaking work done by prospectors as they pursued gold veins deep into the rugged mountainside.
whose residents can gamble away their shirts in a pool area where waterslides run though a central tank full of genuine, rather than metaphorical, sharks. Casino Royale provides the cheapest fun you can have round the roulette wheel. Fans of ‘Killer,’ who enjoy the atmosphere of a wild west saloon, should make for Sam’s Town. Then there is the shopping. The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian are modeled after St. Mark’s Square in Venice itself, complete with canals and working gondolas. It is also worth taking a stroll past the Forum Shops at Caesars which replicate an ancient Roman street, sporting classical piazzas and gushing fountains. All these spectacular ‘malls of the world’ offer top designer brands; whether that is clothing, jewelry or footwear.
Another way to enjoy the peace of the wilds is by kayaking or rafting on the Colorado River from the base of the mighty Hoover Dam to Willow Beach, Arizona. This section of the Colorado is moving flat water. It is not a whitewater trip,

and it is perfect for first timers or seasoned paddlers. Along the way you can stop and see hidden places such as the Sauna Cave, Gold Strike Canyon, Lone Palm Canyon, Emerald Cave, Hanging Gardens and many other treats. The wildlife here is also of interest. Some creatures you may be fortunate enough to encounter are big horn sheep, bald eagles, coyotes, red tailed hawks, wild burros and more. Other attractions along the river include the many natural hot springs and hot waterfalls that hide in the canyons. All this only 45 minutes from the centre of Vegas itself. Don’t forget to bring proper footwear. Tennis shoes or river sandals are the most suitable. Then there is mountain biking closer to town around nearby Lake Mead – an oasis of peace and beauty. This is the largest reservoir in the USA formed by water impounded by the Hoover Dam. The surrounding Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year round. Measuring 1.5 million acres, it is twice the size of Rhode Island. The huge expanse of water caters to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers and fishermen. The desert is a reward in itself for hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. Three of America’s four desert ecosystems, the Mojave, the Great Basin and the Sonoran Deserts, meet in Lake Mead NRA. As a result, this seemingly barren area is actually not barren at all. It contains an enormous variety of plants and animals, some of which are totally unique to this area.
Wedding Chapel.
If you are in the mood for something wilder, many companies offer desert tours on All Terrain Vehicles. This involves riding at speed over the dunes and gullies of red earth, dust flying and adrenaline pumping. A sideline to casinos, shopping and shows in urban Las Vegas is the business of getting hitched to your only true love. Marriage is now a Las Vegas industry in itself. This may explain why the city has more churches per capita than anywhere else in the United States. The classic place for a swift and glittery hitching is the Little White Wedding Chapel. This is where Frank Sinatra married Mia Farrow, so it has real history of a sort. Perhaps the strangest, (and a favourite with Elvis impersonators not surprisingly), is the Viva Las Vegas Chapel. The cutesiest (for some) is undoubtedly Wee Kirk o’ the Heather. This is a Scottish fantasy chapel for those who would find the genuine Scotland far too chilly and grey.

To celebrate World Oceans Day, dusitD2 baraquda pattaya hosted “Returning baby Clownfish to their home reefs” in Sattahip, Chonburi on 8 June 2010. The event was joined by famous scuba divers as well as Thailand’s renowned underwater photographers, such as Mr. Duangdao Suwanarangsri, Mr. Songpol Amnartsingh and Mr. Nat Samoontamee. The Clownfish are provided by the Percular Farm, Thailand’s first and biggest clownfish farm which started breeding clownfish in 2001 with the intention of protecting wild marine fish from extinction. “With this initiative, we aim to increase the awareness of the importance of the world’s ocean in people’s daily lives by showing them ways to improve their impact on the ocean, for example, reducing CO2 emissions. Together with thousands of people from around the world celebrating World Oceans Day, we can make a real difference in our underwater environment,” said Mr. Michael Ganster, Hotel Manager of dusitD2 baraquda pattaya. “Additionally, Clownfish symbolises dusitD2 as it has an orange and white-striped body, which matches the brand colour. Furthermore, its popularity has contributed to the depletion of the fish in its habitats worldwide. Therefore, we would like to remind everyone of the importance of this marine life and protect them from extinction,” added Mr. Ganster. This activity is a part of the Ocean Project, which is an international network of over 1,000 aquariums, zoos, museums, and conservation organisations including dusitD2 baraquda pattaya. The Ocean Project work closely with the World Ocean Network to coordinate and organise activities worldwide under the theme “Oceans of Life – Pick your Favorite * Protect your Favorite” with the special focus on connecting the public with their favourite ocean animal to conserving the world’s oceans.
dusitD2 is the second generation dusit International, blending tradition with the contemporary in a modern setup, uniting the standards that are international with hospitality that is distinctly Thai. dusitD2 baraquda pattaya, opened December 2008, is located on pattaya 2 road, with easy access to the beach, entertainment, shopping and café scene.

VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS The World’s Most Romantic Train Journey W O R D S : Peter Holthusen

here were scenes of wild enthusiasm when the Stockton to Darlington railway opened to traffic on 27 September 1825. It was the first railway in the world designed for steam locomotives. The British Parliament approved the building of the line in 1821, but it was only after the company acquired the services of a young designer, George Stephenson, that the decision was made to go for steam.
Nearly 200 years after its invention, the train continues to provide one of the most satisfying modes of travel. Today, those in search of nostalgia for this golden age of travel can combine traditional charm and elegance with modern facilities and first-class service.

The railway was built to take coal from the South Durham coalfields near Shildon down to the River Tees at Stockton, via Darlington. But the railway company soon realized that the future lay with passengers as well as goods and in 1883 introduced regular steam-hauled passenger trains. The thrill and romance of the railway is as alive today as it was in 1825, when Stephenson’s ‘Locomotion’ made the historic trip from Stockton to Darlington. Generations have dreamt of the spectacular journeys made by rail through breathtaking scenery to cities full of promise and mystique.
Throughout its distinguished history, the Orient-Express has encouraged its passengers to expect a service that is above the ordinary, and in meeting and exceeding these expectations it has earned itself a legendary reputation. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express now arrives in the 21st century resplendent with style, romance and intrigue from a lifetime of remarkable travel, and set for a future of equal distinction
The history of ‘luxury’ train travel can be traced back to 1864 when the innovative railway builder, George Mortimer Pullman, created a train in Britain, featuring the ultimate in 19th century technology and opulence and was far more advanced than anything that existed in Europe. In the 1870’s the first sleeping carriages and parlour cars in Britain went into service and for the first time meals were served on board a train. The first all Pullman train in Europe, the Pullman Limited Express, began operating in 1881. It ran from London to Brighton and was the first train to be illuminated by electricity. Shortly afterwards, by connecting trains to ferries, George Mortimer Pullman made safe and comfortable train travel between London and Paris a reality. Georges Nagelmackers, a young Belgian railway enthusiast, also began building luxury railway carriages and gradually proceeded to do for continental train travel what Pullman had for Britain. In 1881 after experimenting with several demands, Nagelmackers introduced the first restaurant car aboard a continental train. With sleeping carriages and restaurant cars in place, Nagelmackers was finally able to fulfil his dream and on 4 October 1883, the first Orient-Express train service was inaugurated. The initial route ran from Paris to Giurgi (on the Danube in Romania), via Strasbourg, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest.

London’s Victoria Station bound for Venice. Today, the glamour and the romance live on.
By the turn of the century, the great age of rail travel was in full swing. The Simplon Tunnel – at 12½ miles, the world’s longest – was built in 1906, cutting the trip from Paris to Venice significantly, and by 1921 the OrientExpress was running an extended Simplon-Orient-Express route to Istanbul.
Since its inauguration in 1883, the Orient-Express has travelled through the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s, played host to the leading Royal, literary, political, and iconic characters of its time, seen its carriages woven with the intrigue of spies and courtesans, and pioneered luxury adventure travel seemingly reminiscent of ‘The Grand Tour’.
Since Hannibal crossed the Alps, Europe has been inspiring travellers to seek out the glories of its civilisation, from the ruins of ancient Rome to the soaring, artistic triumphs of the Renaissance and the modern age. What more evocative way to see these treasures than on the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress ? This legendary service has always been more than a mere train journey. Ever since the first trip from Paris to Giurgi in 1883, it has captured the imagination of the world.
In 1982, when the train embarked on a celebrated rebirth, Sherwood’s meticulous restoration re-established the train to its former eminence. With its many comforts and facilities, it now exceeds the highest expectations of the most discerning traveller. Today, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offers an exceptional personal service, with diligent attention to the finest detail making it a truly memorable journey.
Thanks largely to the association with Agatha Christie, there has always been an aura of glamour, a hint of mystery about this train and the Queen of Crime’s “Murder on the Orient Express”, both the book and on film, have done much to increase the cachet of this mystery.
The train is composed of the original 1920s and 1930s British Pullman and Continental Wagon-Lits carriages, lovingly restored, boasting exquisite marquetry panels and designs by artists of the Art-Deco movement, including René Lalique. Elegant cabins are equipped with upper and lower berths and washing facilities. For added comfort, cabin suites, made up of two interconnecting double cabins, are recommended.
The Second World War brought a savage interruption to rail travel across Europe and the original Orient-Express service fell into a gradual decline. That was until 1977, when James Sherwood, President of the Sea Containers Group, attended a Sotheby’s auction in Monte Carlo where he acquired two sleeper carriages from the original train and thus the process of resurrecting the great train had begun. Five years later, on 25 May 1982 Sherwood realized his dream as the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express departed from Platform 2 at

Lunch, dinner and brunch are served by the Italian waiters in one of the three Restaurant Cars: Lalique, Etoile du Nord or Chinoise. Life onboard the Orient-Express is as captivating as the train itself. In keeping with the exquisite surroundings, the atmosphere is equally inviting and varied throughout the day. The service is of course, in perfect harmony with the setting. Once your journey starts, you settle into your private cabin and watch Europe’s finest scenery glide by. Liveried stewards minister to your every need, and will serve you breakfast and afternoon tea in your cabin. No request, however small is too much trouble for the cabin crew. As darkness falls, a gentle, sociable buzz begins and you will be invited to venture into the main body of the train to enjoy the sociable ambience of the Restaurant Cars and Bar Car, where the service alone is an elaborate ceremony of almost forgotten rituals.

we had Le Filet de boeuf (Fillet of beef) pickled with coarse salt, dill, juniper and coriander berries, served raw, thinly sliced and roasted with a tangy red wine sauce. The dessert menu offered an equally tantalizing selection. We closed proceedings with Cocoa wafers layered with a white chocolate, light custard and the summer fruits with spicy wine. And, of course, the setting is very different from that of conventional restaurants. The décor in the dining cars is, perhaps, the train’s finest and the attention to detail is breathtaking. Mellow lighting creates the romantic mood; the guests themselves provide the elegant and sociable tone, while the inviting glow of the Bar Car, with its ever-attentive cocktail stewards guarantees to solicit your custom until the early hours. Famous for its delicious cocktails and welcoming atmosphere the Bar Car is the heart of the train. It is truly a unique, intimate and stylish experience that resounds to the voices of Royalty, heads of state and celebrities. Transformed and designed by Gerard Gallet from a dining car, the Bar Car is the ideal rendezvous to enjoy relaxed conversation before or after dinner, and to warm to the musical skills of their resident pianist. Dressing for the occasion is all part of the experience. Their guide is that you can never be overdressed aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. But whilst you relax in the Bar Car ponder this question - which came first, the baby grand piano, or the carriage that surrounds it? At the end of the day the mood changes as your exclusive compartment, with its intricate Edwardian marquetry and finely-cast solid brass fittings, is transformed into a cosy bedroom, complete with an original washbasin and beds dressed with crisp, damask cotton sheets – gracefully turned down and ready to welcome you for a relaxing night of locomotive dreaming. Let the rhythm of the train lull you to sleep, for tomorrow you will wake to a new landscape, fresh croissants, and a unique sense of well-being.
Few, if any travel experiences can compare with the romance and luxury of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. It is the attention to detail in both service and accommodation that sets it in a league of its own, and commitment to this each and every day means that standards have excelled since the kings and queens of the
Some of the sleeping cars from the late 1920s and early ‘30s, which are now completely refurbished and included in today’s great train, represent the peak of the railway craftsman’s art. Contrary to popular belief and to the film “Murder on the Orient Express”, there was never a day Pullman car attached to the main train. Agatha Christie, in fact, never actually wrote a book with that title – she called it “Murder in the Calais Coach” and the first few editions published in pre-war days appeared under that name.
Regardless, the mystery of the Orient-Express still remains a draw for the discerning traveller. As the train winds its way between the palaces and piazzas of Europe’s greatest cities, one can sit back and enjoy the ever-changing panoramas that unfold before you. View the majestic Swiss and Austrian alpine lakes and mountains, the patchworks of Italian vineyards and the great Renaissance cities.
Sleeping Car 3425 was built in England in 1929 in an Art Deco leaf decoration and shipped to the Continent where it then switched from service to service all over Europe. The car was part of the Orient-Express service used by Carol II, King of Romania, who would very often join the train to conduct love affairs or to pack off a discarded lover. He eventually fled Romania in 1940 on board the Orient-Express. The train, packed with the King’s treasures and valuables, was shot at while crossing Yugoslavia before reaching the safety of Switzerland.
The journey from London (Victoria) to Venice takes 31 hours and is 1,715km. Two separate trains are used: a traditional 1920s and ‘30s Pullman train in the UK between London and Folkestone and a magnificent rake of original Wagon-Lits carriages to continental Europe. The Channel crossing is made by luxury motor coach on the Eurotunnel.
Sleeping Car 3309 is the oldest of the sleeping cars and was built in 1926 in Belgium. The exquisite marquetry designed by René Prou is Floral Art Deco. It operated exclusively on the Orient-Express, working on various parts of the route from 1928 to 1939, from Paris to Bucharest or Munich, or to Istanbul via Vienna and Budapest. The car was part of the service, which in 1929 was stuck in a snow drift for 10 days, sixty miles outside Istanbul, along with a full complement of passengers who survived only with the assistance of nearby Turkish villagers.
Throughout the 200 year history of rail travel several names have stood proudly above all others; world recognized symbols of unashamed luxury and indulgence. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will always epitomize the very highest standards of quality and gracious living, encapsulating the refinement and elegance of yesteryear. This is the yardstick by which other train journeys must be judged.

The Plantation houses The Restaurant which has wide open space on one side where guests can enjoy the fresh air and the view while having their breakfast buffet or a la carte Mediterranean and Thai cuisines. For early birds breakfast, you can watch the mist lift over the forest as the sun rises into the sky. The living and dining rooms are more spacious, with a full sized kitchen to accommodate the group. A second phase of The Pavilions is underway and is due for completion in November of this year. If you are interested is setting up home here, or simply an investment, Pattaya has huge potential. The key tourist areas of Phuket and Koh Samui have seen significant growth in so far as foreign buyers are concerned, as has Bangkok, albeit more typically with expatriates living and working in the Kingdom. However, it is the Pattaya market that has really taken off, particularly over the last five or six years, with purchasers from overseas having accounted for the vast majority of units sold in numerous housing developments and large condominiums. Part of the attraction of Pattaya, over and above markets in places like Phuket and Samui, is the relative cost of properties. Typically, similar units in Pattaya will be significantly cheaper. Moreover, Pattaya is extremely convenient; being located only about an hour’s drive from the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, along recently upgraded and widened highways. In addition, the infrastructure in Pattaya is not only good, but improving rapidly. There are quality international hospitals, highly regarded international schools, excellent dining options from cheap and cheerful to haute cuisine and a vast number of wide ranging entertainment options. On the shopping front, there are huge Western style hypermarkets in which foreign products are widely available. A huge new Central Mall is open, while MBK have announced plans for another big shopping mall, with construction due to begin in a couple of year’s time. In simple terms, living in Pattaya for most foreigners is extremely straightforward, very pleasant and wonderfully affordable. Even for the most parochial of foreign visitors, there are few challenges given the existence of well established expatriate communities from all over the world. Therefore, friends, golf partners or drinking buddies who speak your own language are easy to come by. Open your mind to the possibilities that Pattaya has to offer and you might just find yourself returning often to this beach resort which switches from whimsical to exotic in the span of a heartbeat.

ABSOLUTE THAI Ducati
Ducati has been recognized as the Italian leader of ultimate technology and motorcycle design. It has produced and introduced a variety of sports bikes for the speed enthusiast especially the super bike model ranging from Monster, retro design Motard sport utility bike and Hyper sport. Along with a sales showroom, a service centre is perfectly located where after sale service advisors are promptly available to maintain your beloved motorcycle with the utmost satisfaction. Khun Suriaya also pointed out that Ducati although an import, special financing deals can be had by both Thais and Expats alike, with incredible deals at present on the new Ducati Monster. Absolute’s Managing Director, Andrew Parker, took up the invite to test drive a Ducati and chose the new 2010 Ducati Hypermotard 1100. With over 14 years of experience driving high performance bikes the Ducati was sure to be put through the test.
After having ridden the revised 2010 EVO edition, with more power and less weight, Lucifer proves to be more insistent than ever.
Swinging a leg over a Hypermotard 1100 might be the greatest impediment to ownership, especially for shorter riders. The base Hyper’s seat height of 33.3 inches is much more manageable than the SP’s 34.4 inches when feet need easy contact with the ground. Hands large and small are accommodated by easily adjustable clutch and front brake levers. The new Hypermotard’s EVO moniker is earned by the highly revised air-cooled V-Twin lump dubbed Evoluzione Desmodue (evolution, two-valve-per-cylinder engine). The same bore and stroke yield the same 1078cc displacement, but that’s where most of the similarities end. Fuel and air are directed via a Siemens ECU and throttle body (that replace the previous Marelli components) before entering a completely new cylinder head. Altered intake ports feed a combustion chamber that uses a single spark plug per cylinder rather than the old DS (dual spark) head. The compression ratio is up from 10.7 to 11.3:1, and Ducati claims improved cooling and lubrication. New, too, are the Hyper’s smaller engine cases. Together with Vacural vacuum-die-cast technology, Ducati has shaved about 7 lbs from the engine. Further weight reduction comes in the form of a lighter “848-style” flywheel, a magnesium alternator cover and lightweight rare-earth alternator magnets.
78
A B S O L U T E T H A I A u g u s t/ S e p t e m b e r 2 010
Further enhancing the power-to-weight ratio is a lighter chassis. The rear part of the frame has small machined pieces for the suspension’s pick-up points replacing the previous large and heavy forged steel section. The Hypermotard’s total weight loss is said to be a considerable 15 lbs, resulting in a claimed dry weight of just 379 lbs.
The boys from Bologna claim 95 crankshaft horsepower at 7500 rpm, up five from the previous 90 hp at 7750.
The Hyper EVO benefits functionally by switchgear borrowed from Ducati’s Streetfighter stable-mate, as is the compact (but fully featured) gauge pack.
Peak torque of 76.7 ft-lbs arrives at 5750 rpm, a surprising 1000 revs later than the old DS mill. Ducati likes to note that the service intervals of its bikes have recently gone up
As before, Hypermotard EVOs come in two flavors. The base model is joined by the higher-spec SP version. Premium suspension, brakes and wheels and a smattering of carbon fiber.
to 7500 miles and that its bikes come with a two-year warranty.
Although the dry-type clutch engages at the end of its travel, smooth launches are simple thanks to the responsive and torquey V-Twin. The Evoluzione Desmodue pulls strongly and cleanly from as low as 2000 rpm before really hitting its stride around 4500 revs when mechanical music erupts by the not-too-stifled exhaust. A gain of 5 hp up top is nice (5.5%), but we suspect the increase through the midrange is, percentage-wise, even bigger.

ABSOLUTE THAI Ducati
The Hypermotard 1100 EVO isn’t for everyone, and that’s a major part of its charm. It tantalizes like few other motorcycles.
The Hypermotard really excels when pointed down a twisty road.
The EVO’s off-roadish ergos supply a commanding feeling to the rider, as does the tall perch. The HM retains its unique flip-out mirrors which are reasonably effective but are very wide. Hand guards supply a bit of wind protection while serving double duty as the mounts for the LED turn signals. Foot pegs have serrated edges for max grip in slippery situations; removable rubber inserts keep vibration transmission to a minimum.
Although the 1100 EVO Hypermotard is visually unchanged, the 2010 updates have created a better machine. And to do it while keeping the price unchanged is laudable. The debut last year of the Hypermotard 796 gave riders a new entry into the HM family, allowing the 1100 to go further up-market.
Relatively low gearing and a broad powerband supply plenty of squirt. Gears 1 to 3 are closely spaced for potent offthe-line acceleration, then a bit of a gap to 4th. Out of town, cruising speeds of 70-75 mph are quite tolerable despite the lack of wind protection. Bump compliance is admirable thanks to 6.5 inches of travel in 50mm Marzocchi fork and 5.6 inches in the Sachs shock, both three-way adjustable.
Despite America’s general reluctance to naked sportbikes, the inimitable allure of Ducati’s supermoto-styled Hypermotard has made the U.S. its second-largest market After getting reacquainted with the 1100 Hyper, we find plenty of appeal in this concept. The Desmodue V-Twin has ample, soulful power, the chassis is rock solid, and the styling is precocious yet almost universally fascinating.
The lighter flywheel makes the Desmodue quicker to rev and snappier in its responses. The redline seems to come more hastily, giving us the chance to run into the pleasingly soft rev limiter. Its throttle has a fairly short range, perhaps about one-third of a twist to its stop, so it’s just a flick of the wrist to achieve maximum acceleration.
For Further Information on the new 1100 EVO Hypermotard or any other Ducati models please visit www.ducatiphuket.com Or visit their showroom at: 51/23 Moo 2 Chaofa (West) Road. Tumbon Vichit Ampher Muang Phuket 83150 Tel: 086 476 5650
Ducati claims 41 mpg for the Hypermotard, giving it a theoretical 135-mile range from its acutely small 3.3-gallon tank.
