I think my favorite story of this issue is about the Elephant Warriors. It is a beautiful history of Thailand’s love of elephants along with a sad story of how they were almost lost because of their size and power. Be sure to give some bananas to the next elephant you see. Spirit houses are an oddity to most of us foreigners here in Thailand. However, as our article describes, they are a significant and cherished tradition in the country’s culture and religion, and it is good for us to learn about it and to show our respect and understanding. I believe we would expect the same of foreigners in our home countries. Katee Sackhoff graces this issue’s cover because who can resist a beautiful smiling blonde? Well, maybe many of us came to Thailand to get away from blondes.

For anyone who plans on staying in Asia or who has interests here, understanding ASEAN is a must. There is no doubting the rise of Asia’s economy and influence and realizing the opportunities the new trading bloc will provide. Maybe it will at least make traveling from one Southeast Asian nation to the next much more hassle free!

INTRO TO BIKRAM YOGA

I

What are the benefits of Bikram Yoga? The benefits of Bikram Yoga are endless. The 26 posture exercises move fresh, oxygenated blood to one hundred percent of your body, and restore all systems to healthy working order. Bikram Yoga also tones, strengthens and lengthens the muscles while strengthening the spine. It also improves overall circulation in the body. Bikram Yoga also promises to reduce the risk of sports injury, thereby achieving a relative relief from pain. Problems with physical alignment, osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, insomnia, both high and low blood pressure, and many other medical problems have known to be resolved for many through regular practice. Most importantly, you will learn to focus your mind and control your breathing, leading you to be calmer; this calmness will then help you reach a union of the body, mind and spirit.

f you have always wanted to try Bikram Yoga, but are not sure exactly what it entails, then read below for a brief description about what you can expect from this type of exercise. What is Bikram Yoga? Becoming popular at the beginning of the 1970’s, Bikram Yoga is the most popular form of hot yoga today. Bikram Yoga is a challenging series of 26 poses. The 26 ansanas are conducted in a room that is generally heated to 105 degrees. The heat allows you to safely work deep into your muscles, tendons, and ligaments while releasing toxins and congestion within your body. The heat helps to change your body from the inside out.

Who is Bikram? Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the Bikram Yoga system. He is one of the most well known yogis in the world, and one of the most knowledgeable hatha yoga teachers. Bikram began practicing yoga at the age of four, and by the time he was thirteen, he won the National India Yoga Championship. Bikram was undefeated for the next three years, and later retired as the undisputed All-India National Yoga Champion. He later devised the 26 postures sequence and founded Bikram’s Yoga College of India. Today, there are more than 1,650 Bikram Yoga Studios around the world reaching over 3 million students.

Your first class of Bikram Yoga may be uncomfortable or mildly painful at first and you may feel lightheaded or nauseous during the session.

How to Get Started? If you are interested in starting Bikram Yoga, the first thing you need to do is find a studio. Arrive to the studio early, and mentally prepare yourself for the heat. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as well as before and after class. Your first class of Bikram Yoga may be uncomfortable or mildly painful at first and you may feel lightheaded or nauseous during the session. These sensations are often symptoms of detoxification taking place in the body. It’s important that you wear light fitting clothing in which you are comfortable, and out of respect for Bikram, please do not wear any green. Place your towel over your mat and lie down on your back with your head facing the mirrors and feet towards the back wall, just like the position practiced during class. It’s more respectful to the others to lie in the same direction, and not put your feet in their face. During the class, pay close attention to what the instructor says and watch the other students for an example. When you leave class you may feel lightheaded or off-balance. Maintain your relaxed state and calmness. It’s important to remember that yoga helps to realign your body, and that realignment may cause you to feel lightheaded. Don’t forget to drink water; eating a piece of fruit may help with the lightheadedness. Enjoy the benefits of your Bikram Yoga classes. Most likely you will feel relaxed and energized at the same time. You may also have the best sleep of your life that night.

orn Kathryn Ann Sackhoff on April 8, 1980 in Portland, Oregon, she was the youngest of two children born to developer Dennis Sackhoff and his wife Mary, an English as a Second Language (ESL) educator. Sackhoff was active as a student and participated in ballet and competitive swimming until a knee injury forced her to give them up. She also became involved in drama class at a very early age, winning the lead in several high school musical productions. Sackhoff moved to Los Angeles after her graduation from Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon to pursue a career in acting. There, she waited tables until she began landing roles in 1998, with the first being a supporting role in the TV movie Fifteen and Pregnant with Kirsten Dunst, and later, the lead in MTV’s failed pilot Locust Valley. Sackhoff worked steadily over the next few years as a guest performer on television shows and in TV features before landing her first role as a series regular on the short-lived Fox Family Channel program The Fearing Mind , about a horror and suspense writer whose life begins to intertwine with the plots of his novels. Sackhoff quickly graduated to a minor role in her first theatrical feature, Christine Lahti’s May-December romance My First Mister, before landing her second series, The Education of Max Bickford, starring as the headstrong daughter of top-billed Richard Dreyfuss. In interviews, Sackhoff commented that she was especially close with the veteran actor, who took her under his wing throughout the show’s brief production. Billed as Katee Sachoff, she next co-starred in Halloween: Resurrection as one of six college students who participate in a reality show contest that requires them to spend a night in the childhood home of horror movie icon Michael Myers, who, unbeknownst to them, has again returned to commit mass murder. The following year, producer Ronald D. Moore tapped Sackhoff for his re-imagining of the much-loved science fiction series Battlestar Galactica. The miniseries, which aired on The Sci Fi Channel in 2003, was met with an overwhelming response by viewers, who made it the third highest-rated original program in the network’s history. Less positive, however, were fans’ reaction to

Sackhoff’s casting as ace fighter pilot Starbuck, who had been played as a loveable rogue on the original series by Dirk Benedict (who also voiced a negative opinion of the new show to the press). However, the combination of Sackhoff’s performance and the show’s exceptional writing effectively took her from lovestruck flight instructor who causes the accidental death of her intended, to a hard-bitten soldier who struggles with her past. In subsequent seasons, she found herself a test subject on a “farm” created by the show’s robotic villains, the Cylons, to generate human/Cylon hybrids. By the end of the third season, Starbuck attempted to rebuild her life, but found herself unable to shake the experience and that preoccupation appeared to lead to her death. To her now considerable fan base, Starbuck was seen alive again at show’s end. For her work, Sackhoff received two Saturn Award nominations. After ascending to stardom with Galactica, Sackhoff appeared in several genre-related projects designed to target her main audience. She also starred in the directto-DVD science fiction feature The Last Sentinel as a soldier helping kung fu star Don “The Dragon” Wilson fight robot soldiers in the future. Sackhoff also joined other Galactica co-stars to lend their voice to a 2007 episode of the irreverent animation/comedy series Robot Chicken, and provided a voice for the popular video game Halo 3. In 2007, Sackhoff had a recurring role on the revamped Bionic Woman as Sarah Corvus, who received bionic prosthetics prior to the show’s reluctant heroine, Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan), and went AWOL from the program after she discovered it was affecting her mental and physical health. Science fiction fans ate up the action-packed face-off between Ryan and Sackhoff, and the actress showed another facet of her acting talent with her performance, which alternated between feral and vulnerable. Sackhoff played Deputy Sheriff Victoria “Vic” Moretti, a newly arrived transplant from Philadelphia’s police department. As the cable network’s highest rated debut drama ever, Longmire was quickly renewed for a second season, due in no small part to the contributions of Sackhoff.

As her duties aboard the Galactica wound down in 2009, Sackhoff picked up a recurring role as Dr. Theodora Rowe on Nip/Tuck, in addition to a hilarious cameo as a fantasized version of herself on the hit geek sitcom The Big Bang Theory. The initial tweet that caused the trouble wasn’t something that seems particularly controversial. Sackhoff posted a CNN news report about a young boy who accidentally shot his father after finding a loaded gun: “Please practice gun safety. This is horrible! RT @CNN: Arizona police: 4-year-old boy fatally shoots his father.” Despite the seeming obviousness of not wanting toddlers to play with loaded weapons, many of Sackhoff’s followers began to debate the deeper issues of gun control in the United States. Like the country itself, many were for stricter controls and many were opposed to increased regulation. Don’t worry too much about Sackhoff disappearing into Twitter obscurity any time soon though -- she still has over 130,000 followers left.

ABSOLUTE THAI Elephant Warriors

Elephant Warriors words: Dan White

I

n ancient times, elephants in full armour charged into violent battle like warm blooded, armoured tanks. The general who had elephants in his army possessed a psychological advantage over an enemy who did not. The impact of an onslaught of relentless, raging giants would often have been a frightening enough sight for an enemy to surrender straight away. The elephant was trained to use its tusks in close contact fighting against both man and horse, and to trample with the feet whilst using the trunk. Another technique was to train the elephant to pick up an enemy soldier and pass him to the man riding on its back who would then effortlessly slice him up with a sword. The elephant would also hold an enemy with the foot and then impale him effortlessly with the tusks. Elephants, however, are not naturally violent creatures. Quite the opposite in fact.

Thai people will tell you that their country is shaped like the head of an elephant, its eyebrows in Lampang, its eyes in Sukothai, its mouth in Bangkok, and the end of its trunk in Had Yai. Elephants are at the heart of Thai culture and tradition. An integral part of Thai identity, they represent the positive qualities to be found in both peace and power. Until Thailand changed its name from Siam, elephants even figured on the national flag. Not just beasts of burden, elephants have always been an honoured national emblem. The king of Thailand traditionally rode an elephant at the front of royal ceremonial processions. At the turn of the 19th century, elephants were practically everywhere. Some 300,000 wild elephants roamed wild in Thailand alone, and 100,000 more were domesticated for farming and forestry. As logging increased, wild elephant numbers fell dramatically. Domesticated elephant power was used to drag teak logs from the forest, demolishing

the creatures’ own habitat. By the late 1900s, Thailand’s rain forest, which previously covered 90% of the country, had diminished to less than 15%, with an estimated 1,500 to 3,000 wild elephants. In 1990, Thailand outlawed logging to preserve what forest remained. This left thousands of working elephants unemployed, their former forest habitats destroyed by the force of their own labours. Once a year in Surin, in north eastern Thailand, a festival is held that celebrates all the facets of Thailand’s national symbol. It culminates in the spectacular re-enactment of a noisy medieval battle. planet. Held on the third weekend in November the town fills up with hundreds of elephants and their mahouts wandering the streets begging food from the many visiting tourists. Many of the mahouts are from the Suay ethnic group. They have tended and trained elephants for generations. They are thought, originally, to have migrated from Cambodia to settle in the north eastern provinces near the border. Known for their expertise in capturing, domesticating, and training wild elephants, the life-long relationship of the mahout with his elephant is an integral element of the Suay way of life. The elephant is both a companion and a family member. The festival usually begins with a procession where all the elephants take part. The number ranges from 120 to 150 and includes calves and adults. Then there is the ‘wai kru’, a solemn ritual performed as a gesture of respect to ‘grand masters’ and teachers in martial arts as well as the performing arts. Indra, the Vedic god of the sky, clouds, and monsoon and Guardian of the East then descends to earth on his elephant, Erawan. The scene changes with village children accompanying baby elephants into the arena. This represents the almost sacred relationship between mahout and elephant. Acting in father and son pairs, it is a close family tie based on a mutual dependency that lasts a lifetime.

Once the procession is over, the elephants begin to demonstrate their prowess through a number of choreographed events. They are designed to show that the elephant is not only a strong animal but also an intelligent, gentle, and obedient one. There is traditional dancing, a tug of war between 70 burly Thai soldiers and one easily victorious tusker. The elephants paint pictures, play football, and pirouette demonstrating the delicacy and precision of their skills. The festival concludes with a mock battle involving hundreds of costumed soldiers and elephants festooned with elaborately ornamental silk and armour. Horsemen ride out into the arena jousting, charging at each other, and waving their swords; turning their horses on a pin. They are followed by massed ranks of infantry and artillery. Then come the elaborately armoured elephants to the sound of explosions and the acrid smell of gunpowder.

The festival concludes with a mock battle involving hundreds of costumed soldiers and elephants festooned with elaborately ornamental silk and armour. Prior to the 18th century, the elephant was the main machine of Southeast Asian war. A Thai king of the late 17th century having had 20,000 war elephants trained for battle. This aspect of war was most renowned in the 300-year-war between Burma and Thailand which resulted in Burma’s sacking of Ayutthaya in 1767. In Surin no one actually gets hurt, but it gives you an idea of what the awesome power of elephants trained for battle might have looked like. The battle reaches its height as one side (presumably the Burmese or Khmers) is vanquished. Finally, all the elephants troop into the arena to wave their trunks in farewell. They then disperse to mingle with the crowds. Petted and fussed over they eventually lope off slowly back to town in a traffic jam of pickup trucks, trunks, costumed medieval warriors, Honda Dreams, and mahouts selling sugar cane. It’s a very Thai form of chaos as the stars of the show plod home to whichever part of the country from whence they came.

The Most Romantic Places to Pop the Question A words: Steve Field

holiday in a different country with your significant other can be a truly magical experience and memory maker; after all, it’s just the two of you together in an unexplored, exotic locale, experiencing a new culture, with no one from your real lives there to disturb you. It’s a time to grow together and it can be beautiful and rewarding. But the first step on this journey, simply deciding where to go, can be a challenge. Here are some romantic places where you might pop the question and make a memory for life. Sea of Mist at Yun Lai: The starlight shimmers, and gradually fades. The golden light of dawn slowly emerges and the black velvet sky becomes an ochre hue, revealing the sea of mist enveloping mountain tops

ADVENTURE IN THE DESERT Dubai’s spectacular theme parks words: Peter Holthusen

t first it came in small ripples from the fastdeveloping oil states higher up the Gulf to which many people had been drawn in search of work, and finally it culminated in the overwhelming, seemingly breathtaking development that followed the discovery of oil.

Many people consider the whole of Dubai to be an amusement park, and they may well be right! But the city already boasts some world-class theme parks. Endless water slides, true-to-life film studios, camel racing, and even indoor skiing. Dubai’s ruler His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum recently approved plans to further develop the city’s tourism sector, with a multi-million dollar investment that will include the construction of even more theme parks. By 2020, Dubai will welcome 20

million visitors per year, and the annual contribution made by tourism to the city’s economy will triple. In this context, Sheikh Mohammed affirmed that the UAE in general, and Dubai in particular, are among the destinations most favoured by tourists regionally and globally, adding that the country seeks to be number one in the field of family tourism. Of the spectacular theme parks already in existence, herein are five of the finest.

this remarkable city is building for the future of the United Arab Emirates at warp speed, and is set to become the theme park capital of the world. AQUAVENTURE WATERPARK www.atlantisthepalm.com The largest and most popular water theme park in the world is located at Atlantis, The Palm, the first entertainment resort destination in the region and located at the centre of the crescent of The Palm in Dubai. Opened in September 2008, this unique ocean-themed resort features a variety of marine and entertainment attractions, as well as 17 hectares of waterscape amusement at Aquaventure Waterpark, all within a 46 hectare site.

IMAGE: slava296 / Shutterstock.com

It is home to one of the largest open-air marine habitats in the world, with over 65,000 marine animals in lagoons and displays including The Lost Chambers Aquarium, a maze of underwater corridors and passageways providing a journey through the ancient city of Atlantis. The Ziggurat is the centrepiece of the Aquaventure Waterpark, reaching 30 metres into the sky and visible from the fronds of The Palm as well as from Dubai’s mainland. The Mesopotamian-styled tower features seven heart-pumping waterslides including the Leap of Faith, with its daring 27.5 metre near-vertical drop propelling body surfers through a clear acrylic tunnel submerged in a shark-filled lagoon and ultimately out into the sunshine and plunge pool below. entertainment. The two-level, 76,000 sq ft leisure complex is developed by Emaar Retail LLC in partnership with the Tokyo-based SEGA Corporation, Japan’s leading indoor theme park developer. SEGA Republic offers visitors of all ages thrilling adventures and amusement games, and has five themed zones – Wild Adventure, Speed Zone, Cyberpop Zone, Sports Zone and Redemption Zone. With over 250 amusement games, from virtual reality and arcade games to simulation activities and physical sports games, SEGA Republic will thrill all visitors. WILD WADI WATERPARK www.jumeirah.com One of the most famous attractions in Dubai is the Wild Wadi Waterpark, situated between the iconic sister properties of the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel, a leisurely half-hour drive from the city centre and Dubai International Airport. IMAGE: slava296 / Shutterstock.com

The Wild Wadi Waterpark is designed around a tale from Arabian folklore featuring Juha and his seafaring friend, Sinbad the Sailor. The main attractions include eight gravity-defying Master Blasters that operate on a series of high-powered water jets, taking guests on an aquatic roller coaster ride.

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo has tens of thousands of aquatic animals, representing more than 330 species, including Sharks and Stingrays.

Wild Wadi offers no less than 24 waterslides, upward streams and the most intense wild water rides, some of which are over 30 metres high and reach speeds in excess of 80 kilometres an hour. For the less adventurous, Juha’s Journey, or the “Lazy River” ride is a relaxing flow of water 360 metres long and 4 metres wide, which offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely swim or sunbathe in an inflatable ring as they drift down the river course. There are seven ring rides available at Wild Wadi; six of them are open to the elements. The Tunnel of Doom is a pitch black ride, longer and faster than any of its kind and guests braving this ride will travel in total darkness in an underground ring ride of sudden twists and turns before plunging into the Lazy River. KIDZANIA www.kidzania.com One of the most exciting theme parks to emerge in Dubai in recent years is KidZania, an award-winning children’s ‘edutainment’ concept that has been introduced to the region through an exclusive partnership with Emaar Retail, the same corporation behind SEGA Republic.

has tens of thousands of aquatic animals, representing more than 330 species, including Sharks and Stingrays. The Underwater Zoo, located on Level 2 takes visitors through various aquatic environments and individual aquatic displays, while offering an interactive approach to educating children and visitors on the ecology and sustainability of marine life. The journey consists of three ecological zones: Rainforest, Rocky Shore, and Living Ocean, where a variety of aquatic animals are featured including Penguins, Crocodiles, Piranhas, Giant Spider Crabs, Water Rats, and Jellyfish amongst others.

KidZania provides a safe, unique and realistic educational environment that allows children to do what comes naturally to them: role-playing by mimicking traditionally “adult” activities. As in the real world, children perform “jobs” and are either paid for their work or pay to shop or be entertained. There are over 80 different roles to choose from including that of surgeons, airline pilots, chefs, engineers, firefighters, and more. The indoor theme park is built to scale for children, and accurately reflects the working environment of a typical city through paved streets, vehicles, a functioning economy, and recognizable destinations in the form of “establishments”.

This spectacular aquarium also has a dedicated floor of Creepy Crawlies, featuring various species of snakes, insects, geckos, lizards, iguanas and amphibians. Spread over an area of 200 sq metres on the mezzanine floor of the Underwater Zoo, Creepy Crawlies has five dedicated exhibits – an Insect Wall featuring spiders, scorpions, millipedes, beetles and cockroaches; the Wall Mounted Glass Exhibits comprising stick insects, geckos, frogs, lizards and toads; the Iguana Enclosure; the Burmese Python Enclosure and the Tree Snake Enclosure. It offers visitors, especially children, a thorough insight into natural diversity with interesting facts and trivia.

DUBAI AQUARIUM & UNDERWATER ZOO www.thedubaiaquarium.com Located at the centre of The Dubai Mall, the Dubai Aquarium is one of the largest indoor aquariums of its kind in the world at 51 m x 20 m x 11 m in size and holds the Guinness World Record for ‘The World’s Single Largest Acrylic Panel’ at a staggering 32.88 m long x 8.3 m high. conceptualisation by London-based David Archer Architects.

In the world of luxury resorts brand is paramount, experience has replaced facilities and stories create emotional bonds. Visitors are guests and the experience is the memory. Synonymous with distinctive architecture and interior design balanced with functionality and exceptional service, Design Hotels lead the way in this guest-centric, experience-driven hospitality world and our latest resort, The Beach Samui, is one of the most recent boutique resorts to join the Design Hotels collection.

The Beach Samui is part of an engaging story; a story of creation - the creation of a unique and consciously designed resort in a tranquil fishing village on the southern tip of Samui Island with panoramic views over Ang Thong Marine National Park. It’s also a story of firsts - Thailand’s first yoo designed resort to become a member of Design Hotels and the first Private Residence Club in our eclectic portfolio of boutique resorts in Asia. The Beach Samui also brings a story of environmental awareness - of the resort’s surroundings and responsibilities, of how we’ve built on a brown field site, of how we are using locally sourced materials, solar energy and natural water filtration systems.

With The Beach Samui, we are writing a new chapter in our history. More than 400 hotels apply for Design Hotels membership each year, but on average, only 5% are accepted. Design Hotels are chosen for their originality in concept. A combination of holistic concepts, location, architecture, design, local integration, corporate ethics and - most importantly - the people behind the concept all contribute to that originality. Design Hotels are “Made by Originals”. “The location, yoo designed interiors and the philosophy of the resort will inspire all of our guests, old and new, who are looking for something different - new holiday experiences and memories to treasure in the most breathtaking of surroundings. The apartments are also available as second home ownership creating a truly exciting lifestyle proposition. “The project has been a true labor of love for myself and our creative development team and our joining with Design Hotels exclusive and eclectic portfolio of unique hotels around the world is a part of The Beach Samui’s growing story. ” commented Bryan Lunt, CEO of the Absolute World Group.

The Beach Samui, is one of the most recent boutique resorts to join the Design Hotels collection.

The Beach Samui and the “Originals” involved in the resort’s conceptualisation and realisation make a perfect partnership, together creating a consciously developed resort with personality and a fantastic story with one of the world’s leading design teams. The new chapter to this story is The Beach Samui’s recognition as part of a collection of the worlds leading design hotels. Samui Island is also writing a new story, a story of Brand Samui, which is being written through unique resort experiences and the growth of branded resorts on the Island. The Beach Samui is the latest addition to this storyline and underscores the Island’s boutique approach and upmarket positioning. “Samui has developed from a relatively unknown backwater 20 years ago to a luxury boutique island resort destination with some outstanding resorts, a vivid culture and a stunning seascape. ABSOLUTE THAI Spirit Worship

Spirit Worship Giving Spirits an Earthly Home words: Steve Field

S

pirit worship is as old as mankind itself. In Thailand the phenomenon goes back to the ancient days when the Thais were beginning their slow migration from the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam to all parts of the Southeast Asian region. Spirit worship, or animism, was a religion by which the entire world lived at one time, and when Buddhism came to Southeast Asia, it developed side by side with the ancient spirit religion. Today, many of the old animistic beliefs are intertwined with Buddhism, and some animistic practices still exist in Thailand. One of these, which is practiced by almost every Thai, is the spirit house.

of a bar or disco, and are even seen at outdoor food markets. They are built on the grounds of Buddhist temples. Outside caves in the mountains, near fishing ponds in the valleys, and occasionally in the middle of an otherwise uninhabited forest. Most importantly, however, the Thai Spirit House is built in the yard of every home. The purpose of the spirit house is to provide an appealing shelter for the spirits, or celestial beings, who would otherwise reside in the heavens. According to folklore, the spirits themselves are neither good nor evil, but most are just finicky and mischievous, demanding respect from humans and capable of disastrous interferences if they don’t get their way. The spirit of the land, for example, expects to be informed when ahuman intends to start a business or engage in

The spirit house can be seen at a prominent spot outside every business establishment in the country. It can be seen on a pedestal in front of every hotel. It dresses the corner garden area of a restaurant, the front

improvements to an existing business. If the spirit is not informed, and if the human does not respectfully request permission, the spirit can indeed cause the venture to fail. The style and construction of a spirit house may be as simple as a typical Thai-style shelter or as elaborate as a Thai palace. The exact style often depends on two factors: which spirit the person wishes to invite, and how much one can afford for the spirit house construction. Construction itself is a specialized field, and only an expert spirit house builder would be considered for proper construction. His responsibility, in addition to construction, is to be familiar with all the necessary rituals involved so that the spirit to be invited will find it an acceptable earthly abode.

The style and construction of a spirit house may be as simple as a typical Thai-style shelter or as elaborate as a Thai palace. The house may be permanent or temporary, made of wood, concrete, or brick. At certain times the spirits are invited down only for special occasions, and this is when temporary spirit houses are built. The size may vary from the very small to a large, walk-in, ground-level affair. The houses are finished with statues, small figures, or symbols of many other sorts in the centre within the spirit house. In addition, there may be various animal figures, such as elephants; figures of people, such as a married couple or other images; and even furniture. Outside, around the balcony that usually surrounds a spirit house, incense holders, candle sticks, and vases for flowers are placed. There are countless gods and other celestial beings in Thai folklore. The primary spirits the Thai’s are concerned with, however, are called the Phra Bhum Jowthee, or Guardian Spirits of the Land. There are nine guardians, and each offers a different type of protection. The Guardian of the House and the Guardian of the Gardens are so frequently consulted with and prayed to that they are the only two that have permanent spirit houses built for them. The Guardian of the House is the spirit that watches over and protects the home. It is uncertain whether there is one spirit that watches over all homes, or if

individual spirits do this for each home. However, all you have to do in Thailand is look around and you’ll see that every home has a spirit house. Thai families who believe wholeheartedly in the spirit house and its importance light incense every morning and ask the spirit to watch over and protect the home. Others do it on ritual occasions. The Guardian of the Gardens also has a permanent spirit house shelter built for him. This spirit watches over and protects the natural surroundings, yards, gardens, and orchards of the Thai family. There is a separate spirit for rice fields, so the Guardian of Gardens should not be mistaken for a spirit protecting all of agriculture. Rather, nature, flowers, plants, and fruit are so important to the Thais that the Guardian of the Gardens receives a separate and permanent house of his own. The other seven Guardians of the Land are Protector of Gates and Stairwells, who is believed to reside in the home doorstep; which explains why one should never step on the doorstep of a Thai home; Protector of

There are nine guardians, and each offers a different type of protection.

Animals; Protector of Storehouses and Barns; Protector of Forests, Mountains, Fields, and Paddies; Protector of Temples; Protector of Waters; and Protector of Military Forts and Defence. The various temporary spirit houses built at times requiring the intercession of a particular spirit can be constructed at any time and at any place. An example of this is a spirit house that sits in the rhododendron forests at the top of Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand. Here, in the middle of a forest hundreds of years old, is a spirit house constructed for soldiers who died in a helicopter crash years ago. Offerings to a spirit house and the spirit who is intended to reside within can be nearly anything. The traditional offerings include flower garlands, betel leaves, bananas, rice, chicken, duck, and a wide range of other edibles and nonedibles. Candles are often used while incense is usually lit daily before a spirit house.

There are spirit houses everywhere In Thailand. Some very famous ones, such as the one that houses the Chiang Mai City Pillar, are large enough to walk into. A visit to Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai will give you an opportunity to see it for yourself. At these people go to make offerings and request aid from the spirits to help them in monumental tasks such as bringing in the coming rice harvest. The ritual involved at such events often involves hundreds of people with a common goal and the spirit is called upon to help all. In return, the people make promises of future offerings in the event that they are successful. Thus, a return visit to repay the spirit for his help is another important part of the ritual.

Many people have asked about what happens to old spirit houses. When changes dictate that a new spirit house be created, a ceremony will be held to transfer the spirit from the old spirit house to the new.

What is ASEAN? Understanding the New Landscape of Asia w o r dS : T i m K n i g h t

T

he Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims include accelerating economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of regional peace and stability, and opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.

three times larger than its land counterpart. In 2011, its combined nominal GDP had grown to more than US$ 2 trillion. If ASEAN were a single entity, it would rank as the eighth largest economy in the world. The ASEAN Way Since the post-independence phases of Southeast Asian states, efforts were made to implement regional foreign policies, but with a unifying focus to refrain from interference in domestic affairs of member states. There was a move to unify the region under what was called the ‘ASEAN Way’ based on the ideals of non-interference, informality, minimal institutionalisation, consultation and consensus, non-use of force and non-confrontation. ASEAN members (especially

external powers, and desire for economic development and nation building. In the 1990s, the ASEAN focused largely on free trade agreements before shifting to nuclear arms and environmental concerns.

Thus the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia adopted fundamental principles:

The Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia was centered on the ideals of non-interference in internal or foreign affairs, peaceful dispute settlements, and economic cooperation between members. Combined, these ideals were termed the “ASEAN Way” and they have since been a source of regional identity for the member nations.

• Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations • The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion or coercion • Non-interference in internal affairs • Settlement of differences or disputes in a peaceful manner • Renunciation of the threat or use of force • Effective regional cooperation

Aims and Purposes As set out in the ASEAN Declaration, the aims and purposes of ASEAN are:

The ‘ASEAN way’ is said to contribute durability and longevity within the organization, by promoting regional identity and enhancing a spirit of mutual confidence and cooperation. ASEAN agreements are negotiated in a close, interpersonal process. The process of consultations and consensus is designed to engender a democratic approach to decision making. These leaders are wary of any effort to legitimize efforts to undermine their nation or contain regional co-operation.

ABSOLUTE THAI What is ASEAN?

Role of ASEAN Today ASEAN regularly holds summits roughly every three years to resolve regional issues and promote relations with countries outside of the block. In particular, the ASEAN Plus Three meeting was expanded to include China, Japan and South Korea, while the ASEAN-CER include talks with leaders from Australia and New Zealand, given their proximity. International investors better know the term ASEAN for its use simply to represent the ten member countries as prime investment destinations. While the region only covers about 4.5 million kilometers, it houses approximately 600 million people that constitute a very significant 8.8% of the world’s population, with approximately $1.8 trillion in nominal GDP.

To provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities in the educational, professional, technical and administrative spheres; To collaborate more effectively for the greater utilisation of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade, including the study of the problems of international commodity trade, the improvement of their transportation and communications facilities and the raising of the living standards of their peoples; To promote Southeast Asian studies; and To maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organisations with similar aims and purposes, and explore all avenues for even closer cooperation among themselves.

Fundamental Principles In their relations with one another, the ASEAN Member States have adopted the following fundamental principles, as contained in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) of 1976:

Head of the International Institute of Strategic Studies – Asia, Tim Huxley cites the diverse political systems present in the grouping, including many young states, as a barrier to far-reaching cooperation outside the economic sphere. He also asserts that in the absence of an external threat to rally against with the end of the Cold War, ASEAN has begun to be less successful at restraining its members and resolving border disputes such as those between Burma and Thailand and Indonesia and Malaysia.

• Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations; • The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion or coercion; • Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another; • Settlement of differences or disputes by peaceful manner; • Renunciation of the threat or use of force; and • Effective cooperation among themselves.

Criticism Non-ASEAN countries have criticised ASEAN for being too soft in its approach to promoting human rights and democracy in the junta-led Burma. Despite global outrage at the military crack-down on peaceful protesters in Yangon, ASEAN has refused to suspend Burma as a member and also rejects proposals for economic sanctions. This has caused concern as the European Union, a potential trade partner, has refused to conduct free trade negotiations at a regional level for these political reasons. International observers view it as a “talk shop”, which implies that the organisation is “big on words but small on action”. However, leaders such as the Philippines’ Foreign Affairs Secretary, Alberto Romulo, said it “is a workshop not a talk shop”. Others have also expressed similar sentiment.

During the 12th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, several activist groups staged anti-globalisation. According to these leftist activists, the agenda of economic integration would negatively affect industries in the Philippines and would cause thousands of Filipinos to lose their jobs.

bustle with people arriving from and departing to all parts of the country, making this a favourite spot for photographers. Wat Traimit, within a few minutes’ walk of the station, is better known as the Temple of the Golden Buddha. Inside this remarkable temple sits the world’s largest solid gold Buddha image, at around five metres in height. Cast sometime during the Sukhothai Kingdom, the era between 1238 to 1438 that saw the first flowering of Thai culture, the statue was covered in plaster and lacquer for hundreds of years and forgotten until it was discovered in 1955, when the plaster was broken during relocation of the statue, revealing the gold figure underneath. Tourists can visit Wat Traimit

The hotel is also on the edge of Chinatown, with all its amazing bustle, shopping, markets, historic shrines and temples, and of course its incomparable restaurants. The station itself is one of Bangkok’s colourful landmarks, serving the entire railway network throughout Thailand. Opened in 1916 and designed in a style that combines Italian Neo-Renaissance elements with an industrial theme, the station is full of life and

and the statue every day between 8 am and 5 pm. Admission fee is only 40 baht. Another fascinating temple within easy walking distance is Wat Hua Lamphong, very distinctive as its chapel and ordination hall are set on a high platform, enabling the temple to be seen from some distance away. Wat Hua Lamphong was renovated to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ascension to the throne of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 1996. The royal seal that is the symbol of the Golden Jubilee, showing two elephants flanking a multi-tiered umbrella, features extensively in the temple’s remodelling. Taking the MRT two stops to Si Lom Station, or one stop further to Lumphini, will lead to Lumphini Park, a large public park with 142 acres of land, laid out in 1925, in the reign of King Rama VI. The city’s first public park, it includes a boating lake, recreational activities, an archaic Chinese clock tower, and a public library. Lumphini Park has plenty of photo opportunities and is open daily from 5 am to 9 pm.

The hotel is also on the edge of Chinatown, with all its amazing bustle, shopping, markets, historic shrines and temples, and of course its incomparable restaurants. Another couple of stops on the MRT line brings us to Sukhumvit Station, where Benjakiti Park is another green park with a lake and several contemporary sculptures, offering a restful place to stroll and sit for those visiting the shops and restaurants of Sukhumvit Road. The park is directly beside one of the busiest parts of this famous road, and is open every day from 5.00 am to 8.00 pm. Soi Cowboy is one of Bangkok’s famous nightlife venues, and is located just off Sukhumvit Road between Soi 21 and Soi 23. Named after T G Edwards, an African-American who was the first to open a bar in this area in 1977 and who always wore a cowboy hat, Soi Cowboy is a 400-metre long alley with bars and pubs catering to tourists and expat residents. A short walking distance from MRT Sukhumvit exit 2, the venues are open nightly from 7.00 pm until late. A few minutes’ walk along Soi 21, also known as Soi Asoke, is the Siam Society, a non-profit organisation under Royal Patronage founded in 1944 to promote

knowledge of Thailand and its neighbouring countries. The Society has a museum and library, and is open on Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. Taking the MRT further, to Chatuchak Park Station, will bring the visitor to Chatuchak Park, a public park that along with its cool greenery and its jogging trails has interesting zones such as the Train Museum, exhibiting the history of the Thai railway system open on weekends at 7.00 am to 4.00 pm - and the Youth Traffic Garden, which provides cycling tracks with traffic signs that allow children to learn about traffic regulations. Chatuchak Park is open daily from 4.30 am to 9.00 pm. Adjacent is the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market, where you can probably buy anything and everything. The market is open on Saturday and Sunday, and visiting early in the morning is recommended to avoid the crowds.

The company’s Kids’ Club is available at all the family-friendly resorts to ensure that the youngsters and teens are taken care of. Within a few minutes’ walk of Chatuchak is another Centara Hotels & Resorts property, Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao, where you can enjoy a rest for refreshments, an international meal at the 24-hour Chatuchak Café, or dine on Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian or Thai cuisine at one of the hotel’s speciality restaurants. Centara Hotels & Resorts is Thailand’s leading operator of hotels, with 41 deluxe and first-class properties covering all the major tourist destinations in the Kingdom.
