Phuket Vegetarian Festival Date: 15-23 October 2012 Venue: Various Chinese shrines, Mueang District, Phuket

T

he Phuket Vegetarian Festival has its origin in Amphoe Kathu around 180 years ago when a Chinese opera company travelled to the area and got sick with a fever. They kept to a vegetarian diet to honour the gods and the sickness disappeared. The locals developed a strong faith in vegetarianism and the annual Vegetarian Festival started up and still continues today. It is believed that by refraining from meat consumption for 10 days during this event purifies mind and soul and brings good luck. Before the festival begins, Ko Tengpoles, bamboo with lanterns attached to the branches, are erected at all the 18 shrines in Phuket to symbolise the presence of the deities.

When the poles are raised on the first day, it is believed that the gods descend into the shrine at midnight signaling the start of the festival. Highlight: On the 6th day of the festival, a religious procession takes place around the city. Part of this procession involves acts of face- and body-piercing. Throughout this period, many of the locals wear white clothes to represent purity. Contact information: TAT Call Centre: 1672 TAT Phuket Office: 66 7621 2213, 66 7621 1036

IMPORTANT Event dates and program details may be subject to change. Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand’s official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past. Tam Prathip is held at the Bangsai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre. This festival features traditional Loi Krathong activities amidst the magnificent ruins of the once glorious capital city of Thailand. Beauty contests, processions of beauty queens, krathong contests, and cultural performances are the highlights of this festival.

Loi Krathong Festival Date: 24-28 November 2012 Venue: Nationwide

L

oi Krathong is one of the best-preserved traditions and most beautiful festivals celebrated in Thailand, illustrating the close relationship between the Thai way of life and water. On the night of the full moon ofthe 12th lunar month (usually in November) people gather at lakes, rivers, canals, and/or other waterways to set adrift krathongs. These are vessels shaped like lotus blossom made of banana leaves containing a candle, incense sticks, flowers, and coins. Currently, the krathongs may be made from other materials; such as, bread which is more environmentally-friendly. The launching of the krathongs is a payment of respect to the goddess of water in gratitude for providing water to the people, as well as an appeal for forgiveness for polluting the water. It is believed that krathongs that float on the water carry happiness and prosperity, as well as taking away misery.

Sukhothai: Held at the Sukhothai Historical Park, the Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival is celebrated in grand fashion. This site is believed to be the origin of this festival. The ruins of the palaces and temples within the Historical Park make for an enchanting atmosphere for the festival and take you back to the past, with people in traditional Thai costumes floating the krathongs on the water. Other activities include fireworks displays, cultural performances, and beauty contests, as well as light and sound presentations. Tak: The tradition of Loi Krathong in Tak is different from other provinces, the festival being called ‘Loi Krathong Sai.’ The banana-leaf floats are replaced by coconut shells threaded together into a long chain and released together on the Ping River. The sight of hundreds of glittering lights floating in line along the river is the origin of its name ‘Loi Krathong Sai.’ This festival also includes Loi Krathong Sai contests, light and sound presentations, and fireworks displays.

Highlight: Visitors can celebrate Loi Krathong Festival nationwide in such places as: Bangkok: Loi Krathong is celebrated widely in Bangkok with various kinds of entertainment, and it is organised at many locations, not only at riverside venues. An illuminated boat procession along the Chao Phraya River and the lit-up buildings and historical sites on both sides of the river make Loi Krathong in Bangkok a memorable experience. The popular places for Loi Krathong in Bangkok include Benchasiri Park on Sukhumvit Road, Benchakitti Park on Ratchada Phisek Road, Santichaiprakan Park on Phra Athit Road, and at the foot of the Rama IIX Bridge. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya: The Bangsai Loi Krathong

Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai celebrates Loi Krathong Lanna style in an event called the Yi Peng Festival. Apart from Loi Krathong on the Mae Ping River, Yi Peng or Lanna-style hot-air balloons are launched into the sky. It is believed that the balloons take away trouble and bad luck. Come and witness the sight of hundreds of Yi Peng floating in the dark sky against the light of the full moon. A Yi Peng procession, Yi Peng competitions, and Lanna cultural performances are also features of this event. Contact information: TAT Call Centre: 1672

ABSOLUTE THAI thai traditional medicine

Thai Traditional Medicine Healing People for Thousands of Years words By: Tim Knight

T

he Kingdom of Thailand has its own system of traditional medicine called “Thai Traditional Medicine” (TTM). It originated during the Sukhothai period (1238-1377) and developed in parallel with the country as a means of national health care until the early 20th century. The spread of modern medicine from the Western world to the East then led to a decline in the practice of traditional medicine in Thailand. As a result, modern medicine eventually replaced TTM and became Thailand’s mainstream health-care system while TTM was neglected for over 60 years until the revival of TTM began in the late 1970s.

In other words, TTM is regarded as comprising the traditional philosophies, bodies of knowledge and modes of practice to care for the health of Thai people that are congruent with Thai culture and way of life, and based on the principles of Buddhism. TTM uses various forms of practices to complement each other, i.e., medicine, pharmacy, massage, midwifery and maternal and child health care, Buddhist rites and meditation, as well as other rituals based on the belief in supernatural power or power of the universe. TTM is a holistic and natural approach of health care that is derived from Buddhist beliefs, the observation of and respect for nature, and the wisdom of Thai ancestors. In addition, traditional knowledge of TTM was also built through the processes of “selection”, “adoption”, “adaptation” and “utilization” of traditional medicine of some countries with which Thailand had contact in the past, e.g., India and China, to suit the Thai way of life.

What is Thai Traditional Medicine? According to the Protection and Promotion of Thai Traditional Medicine Wisdom Act B.E. 2542 (1999), Thai traditional medicine is defined as “the medical processes dealing with the examination, diagnosis, therapy, treatment, or prevention of diseases, or promotion and rehabilitation of the health of humans or animals, midwifery, Thai massage, as well as the preparation, production of Thai traditional medicines and the making of devices and instruments for medical purposes. All of these are based on the knowledge or textbooks that were passed on and developed from generation to generation.”

The Four Elements of the Body According to TTM, the human body is composed of four elements i.e., earth, water, wind and fire. When the four elements of the body are in equilibrium, it will be healthy. In contrast, if an imbalance in these elements occurs, i.e., if there is a deficit, an excess, or disability in any of the four elements, a person will become ill.

12

o c t o b e r / n o v e m b e r 2 012

Moreover, the imbalance in the four internal elements and illness can also be due to an imbalance in the four external elements as well. According to TTM, for each person there will be one element that is more dominant than others, one’s own dominant element is called “tard-chao-ruan”, which is basically determined by the date and month of one’s conception. The tard-chao-ruan of a person plays an important role with regard to one’s characteristics and appearance as well as the weak point in one’s health.

According to TTM, the human body is composed of four elements (‘tard’ in the Thai language), i.e., earth, water, wind and fire.

According to TTM, human illness can be caused by the following factors: 1. Supernatural power, e.g., ancestor’s soul, powerful spirits of the forest, evil spirits, punishment from a heavenly spirit of those who misbehave. 2. Power of nature, e.g., imbalance in the four elements of the body, imbalance of heat and cold, and imbalance of the body’s equilibrium. 3. Power of the universe, e.g., positive and negative influences from the sun, the moon and the stars on human health. 4. Kimijati, which may be considered the equivalent of microorganisms or parasites in modern medicine. Moreover, according to TTM, human health is also influenced by: 1) The elements (tard). As mentioned previously, an imbalance in the four basic elements of the body and the effect of external elements or the environment can affect human health. 2) The seasons. Heat and cold during different seasons clearly affects human health. 3) Age. Based on TTM, during different periods of life, people are more prone to get ill from the influence of different elements. 4) Geography. As the geographic location of where one life dictates the weather and the environment, it can play a role in affecting one’s health. 5) Time. Astrologically, the sun, the moon and the stars continuously move, thereby influencing human life and health differently during different times of the day.

Inappropriate behaviors that can be the causes of ailments according to TTM include: incorrect eating habits, e.g., eating too much or too little, eating food that has gone bad, or unfamiliar food, or food that is not suitable for one’s own dominant element or diseases. Imbalanced postures while sitting, standing, walking, or sleeping can lead to disequilibrium of the body structure and needless worsening of health. Exposure to extreme weather or polluted air. Being deprived of food, water or sleep. Delayed urination or defecation. Overwork, over-exercise, or excessive sexual activity. Deep sorrow or extreme exhilaration. Extreme anger, lack of equanimity. Excessive sexual activity doesn’t seem like a bad way to get sick though!

Treatment emphasizes adjusting the balance of the body elements using the health promotion approach. Examination and Diagnostic Procedures of TTM Getting a patient’s history and chief complaint is the first step to healing. In addition to asking about a patient’s history, symptoms, chief complaints and usual behaviors or habits, TTM practitioners need to know a patient’s date, time, month and year of birth in order to figure out the patient’s tard-chao-ruan and determine which element is causing the imbalance and illness. The second step in the examination process is physical examinations, e.g., heart rate, pulse, temperature, visual and manual examination of affected organs or areas of the body, structure of the body, degree of movement of joints and the extremities. Since each element of the body controls different organs or systems of the body, TTM practitioners can diagnose what is wrong with a patient’s tard from the patient’s symptoms, chief complaint and physical examination. As well, some TTM practitioners may also perform astrological examination of patients to determine if their illnesses are the result of stars, a supernatural power or bad karma. If so, a form of rites is usually performed to psychologically boost the patient’s morale. Treatment TTM is considered a holistic form of medicine. Treatment emphasizes adjusting the balance of the body elements using the health promotion approach. Naturally determined

factors, e.g., tard-chao-ruan, seasons, external elements and the power of the universe, are also considered in order to give appropriate treatments. Treatments prescribed for patients can be herbal medicine preparations, Thai traditional massage, hot herbal compresses, or herbal steam baths. In addition, the TTM health promotion approach may be used to achieve good health, which is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, by correcting the inappropriate, unhealthy behaviors mentioned above. Some of the above practices and beliefs are surely up for debate, and many may find TTM or any form of alternative medicine to be a complete farce. How can the alignment of Mars and Pluto cause you to have back pain? But it is easy to forget that, not so long ago, everyone believed that the Earth was the center of the universe and that the world was flat. Maybe approaching TTM with an open mind is the best practice. After all, what can it hurt, and if some people believe in it and they truly feel it helps them, all the better.

The club competes in the choir competition circuit. It’s been called “a High School Musical for adults”, the series follows the club and its mixture of oddball members as they try and restore it to its former glory. It is a musical comedy in which the eager and ambitious students not only compete to win the Nationals, but also have to deal with the tough and cruel realities of their school, McKinley High. At the same time, Will is trying to rejuvenate his failing love life whilst preventing the school’s cheer leading coach Sue Sylvester from sabotaging the choir. Presently, the Spirits announce their arrival. Facial expressions change. The devotees start to twitch. One after another the participants shift from being ordinary people to being mediators of the Nine Emperor Gods. eligion comes in many forms. Some are magnificent, some reflective and some brutal. Once a year here on Phuket Island in Thailand religion goes off the rails all together in shamanistic rituals of gore and explosives that sees shopkeepers, lawyers, travel agents, bus drivers and students descend to a level of surrealistic self mutilation that tests all definitions of worship. I am standing on the damp streets of Phuket town at dawn in front of a beautifully ornate Chinese temple.

One by one they stand in line, enchanted, enlightened or in ecstasy, bobbing up and down, uttering squeaks and dribbling saliva while waiting their turn to have their flesh sliced and mutilated. The piercing itself is being done with surgical precision.

What drives normally sane and restrained people to such extremes is the desire for absolute purity. For nine days at the beginning of ‘Taoist lent’ the descendents of Chinese immigrants abstain from eating all meat and dairy products. They devote themselves to the purification of the soul culminating in acts of physical asceticism that involve gory feats of self mortification, walking through fire and climbing ladders with rungs of sharpened blades. It takes two or three men to punch the metal and wood through the faces of their subjects. Many have such large and unwieldy objects pushed through their flesh that they need helpers on either side to aid them as they walk otherwise their skin would be completely shredded. The operations complete the devotees make their way out on to the streets.

Dressed in silk and running on bare feet, spirits possessed precede the mutilated. Trance like they stop for offerings proffered at street side shrines. They are nodding their heads, hopping up and down and squeaking like kittens. These are the voices of the spirits inside them. To me they look like a mass breakout from the local lunatic asylum, but they are not. They are ordinary townspeople and their rituals are deadly serious. In the main body of the gathering procession one teenager with fashionably floppy hair has pierced his face with a huge model jet fighter made of coca cola cans. Further on a charming looking couple have a complete bicycle sticking through their cheeks. Another man has been rather more practical. Fearing rain perhaps, he has the shaft of an open umbrella sticking through his face. Figure after figure trudges past each one sporting ever more creative piercings using ever more bizarre objects. Multiple skewers at all angles through face neck and body, tongues transfixed by iron bars or sliced with saws. Maybe the most peculiar are those who have chosen to gauge a hole in their cheeks and then pierce the wound with branches of leafy foliage. It all started in 1825 when a Chinese travelling theatre troupe came to Phuket to perform for immigrant tin

miners. The actors were struck down by a mysterious epidemic. No medicine would cure the disease. The entertainers blamed their illness on the fact that they had failed to pay proper respect to the nine emperor Gods of Taoism. Unfortunately they had no priests who knew how to perform the ceremonies that would placate the Gods. They were forced to send word back to their homes in Fujian in China. Eventually messengers returned to Phuket with the correct manual and the performers were able to resurrect their ancient spiritual crafts. It is no surprise that the origins of the Vegetarian Festival lie in theatre. As a penance for their sins the actors adopted a strict vegetarian diet to propitiate the deities of Kiu Hong Tai Te and Youk Hong Ta Te and were cured. The villagers were impressed and decided to follow the example of their theatrical visitors. They built ornate temples in thanks to the deities and these beautiful temples are still the base camps for devotees during the festivities. It is here that you see men piercing, cutting and mutilating their friends before they step out onto the streets of the town.

Everywhere around people fling deafening fire crackers that whizz and boom at extraordinary volume. Besides fasting devotees must abstain from sexual intercourse, killing, quarrelling, telling lies and, bizarrely, staying in hotels during the three weeks before the festival starts. These restrictions are all designed to strengthen them before they are possessed by the Emperor Gods. After the procession of blood and gore comes the procession of ear splitting noise. Hooded youths carry huge shrines and effigies on their shoulders. Everywhere around people fling deafening fire crackers that whizz and boom at extraordinary volume. The acrid smell of gunpowder perfumes the smoke and ash that shrouds the air. It feels like a re enactment of the first day of the Somme and it is amazing that no one is injured or incinerated. And as the last float is carried aloft into the distance the town falls deathly quiet. It is still only 7.30 in the morning and the street cleaners arrive, sweeping up mounds of dust and debris. At the start of the working day it is as if all this had never happened. I wander into a travel agents to buy a ticket out. Sitting opposite me is a beautifully manicured Thai woman in her early twenties with coiffured hair and wearing a fetching and fashionable, cream coloured trouser suit. As she busies herself at the computer making my reservation and printing out my ticket I notice the stigmata of the Emperor Gods on her cheeks and her image comes back to me. Only two hours before she had been walking through town with an iron bar through her face. Now, like the whole community, she has returned to the twenty first century and resumed her life of mundane tasks….. Shopping, watching TV and working at her job. As I make my way through town I notice others. The taxi driver too has the small wounds that betray his morning’s activities. The man who sells me a newspaper smiles at me which must be painful since both cheeks are marked by neat round scabs. I must look disturbed. He looks concerned. “Sabaa di mai?” He asks me. “Are you okay?” in Thai. “Sabaa di,” I answer him. “Yes I am okay.” He grins and carries on with his day IMAGE: 1000 Words / Shutterstock.com

Professional property management playing an increasing role in holiday home markets b y: D e x t e r N o r v i l l e

T

raditionally luxury residential developments in holiday destinations, be they resort condominiums and villas, were predominantly managed by the developer or a subsidiary when the development was completed. However, an increasing number of developers and co-owners in these markets have realized the benefits from having the property managed by an independent professional property management firm. This is reflected by the fast growth of the portfolio of condominium and villa developments Jones Lang LaSalle manages in Thailand’s key holiday destinations over recent years. Jones Lang LaSalle first entered the holiday home management business in late 2007 in Phuket. Today the firm’s business has seen an impressive growth, now managing more than 20 condominium and villa developments in Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi and Hua Hin making it the leader in this market segment. Potential demand for our estate management services in Thailand’s key coastal destinations is huge as new luxury resorts and development projects continue to mushroom. More importantly developers are now focusing more on creating a brand image through the actual quality of the development and marketing of the project, and leaving property management to professional independent service providers.

In property developments managed by the developer, some co-owners may feel that the developer is intent on looking after their own interests more than looking after the property. To avoid such a conflict, using a trusted independent property management firm has become an increasingly preferred option for both developers and co-owners.

In holiday locations there is even more emphasis on ensuring the property has the right management team as most co-owners generally visit their residences only a few times a year and thus need to make sure their property is well taken care of by a reliable property manager, who can make them feel comfortable knowing that all services are handled by management professionals.

ABSOLUTE THAI

Property managers come in all shapes and forms from international asset managers through to house maids and thus developers as well as co-owners must use careful judgment to identify the right manager for their property.

he chant starts quietly but within a few seconds it builds up to an ever-repeating crescendo. “Big Chedi!” “Big Chedi!” “Big Chedi!” This mantra, from the mouths of thousands of white clad men and women, is directed at a giant space-age dome in what must be one of the most bizarre locations in the entire Buddhist world. Some of those chanting hold their hands together in a traditional gesture of supplication. Others pump the air triumphally. This vast throng of white clad people slowly working themselves up into a

collective trance are worshippers at Wat Dhammakaya in Pathum Thani, a short distance from the metropolis of Bangkok. This vast Buddhist temple, at the centre of which squats the vast stupa, resembles nothing less than an in international airport. This is unique in a country where most places of worship exude an ancient and exquisite mystique draped in dark wood, painted pillars and gold leaf. This is Wat Dhammakaya, and today it looks like a scene from Star Trek. The driving force in the establishment of Wat Dhammakaya was the Abbott Phra Dhammachayo. He is the world’s leading proponent of the special Dhammakaya technique of meditation, and every Sunday resident monks welcome thousands of followers seeking inner peace and guidance on their spiritual quest.

Kasetsart University in 1969, and it was he and some fellow students who established the original meditation centre on eighty acres of land donated by a wealthy widow. They began teaching the Dhammakaya meditation technique originally pioneered by the late Luang Poh Sod. He was a highly respected monk, although he too was a controversial figure. Luang Poh Sod taught students to visualise a crystal ball at the centre of their bodies in order slow the turmoil of the mind. It is this form of meditation that remains central to the practice of devotees at Wat Dammakaya. Wat Dhammakaya itself was established in February 1970. In 1977, the foundation stone for the main chapel was laid by the much-loved Princess Sirindhorn and the wat was officially recognized as a temple by the Thai government in 1978. It was originally known as Wat Voranee Dhammakayaram. The Main Chapel was completed in 1982. While the temple was being built, the Dhammadayada ordination scheme gave training to hundreds of university students, a steadily increasing number of whom swelled the population of those resident in the temple. Phra Dhammachayo has also set up Dhammakaya meditation centres around the globe.

Phra Dhammachayo has been accused by his critics of subverting and commercialising the fundamental tenets of Buddhism and creating what is essentially a cult, based more on money than spirituality.

The temple has been at the centre of a great deal of controversy in terms of the way it solicits donations and what it offers in return to those who donate. Phra Dhammachayo has been accused by his critics of subverting and commercialising the fundamental tenets of Buddhism and creating what is essentially a cult, based more on money than spirituality. The Abbott answers these critics with the idea that Buddhism is open to a wider interpretation than some might like to suggest. The thousands of devotees I witness as they slowly chant to the giant stupa at the centre of the temple may be visualising a crystal ball, but the structure that is the subject of their mantra is more like a life-sized UFO; gloriously lit and covered with thousands of golden Buddha images, each one donated by a devotee in search of better karma. There are over one million of them – 300,000 on the outside and 700,000 on the

inside. What I am attending is a mass ‘casting’ of new Buddhas, and the rally is a curious mixture of religious fervour and what seems almost like totalitarian crowd management. To reach the main temple grounds one passes through outer concrete buildings that appear exactly like airport terminals. After passing Terminal 3, I find negotiating the crowds of monks and white clad lay people is not easy. The way is lined with huge banners on poles that bring to mind political rallies as seen on old news reels from 1930’s Germany or Italy. Yet more people arrive in their thousands clad in white and led by men carrying enormous crimson flags emblazoned with the image of the Big Chedi. Children wait in line to be ushered to their seats. Pinned on their tunics are more images of the Big Chedi. It is the symbol one sees everywhere – a single visual focus that brings all these thousands of people to one place at one time. The ones at the back sit on plastic garden chairs. Those in the arena itself are issued with little squares of plastic to shield their white clothing from the dust and dirt of the concreted ground.

Wat Dhammakaya is firmly in the 21st century when it comes to the technology of media presentation. Once the people are assembled it is the turn of the monks to make their way through the crowds in solemn procession and take their places at the base of the stupa and on an arrangement of platforms surrounding it, where the furnaces and casting equipment for the soon to be created Buddha images are placed. Once the chanting is over, the vast crowds sit down and as the sun sinks the Big Chedi glows brighter and the meditation begins. An eerie silence descends as these thousands of people all empty their minds as one. The only people moving are the TV crews for the temple’s publicity operation. Wat Dhammakaya is firmly in the 21st century when it comes to the technology of media presentation. This intensely choreographed ceremony moves ever faster into the space age - something straight out of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. The meditation at an end, the monks line up with the moulds set ready for the pouring of the molten metal. With a flourish a senior monk flings metal spheres into

the heat of the furnace with what looks like a giant soup ladle. With expert skill the monks poor the liquid metal into the moulds, two monks to each bucket of white-hot liquid suspended on metal rods between them. One after another, the Buddha images are cast. There is a flourish and a showmanship to this whole scene that can only invite admiration. Like the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, the air is filled with ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as the next chapter of the extravaganza unfolds. Most of the Buddha images will actually be cast at a later time and this show is more symbolic than practical. Never the less, it is a show that has satisfied the crowd to no end with energy, style and an optimistic promise of positively steered rebirth.

ever attentive temple minders. This has certainly been one day to remember, a feast for the eyes and for the senses with thousands of people all together in a huge celebration of oneness. And as the memory begins to fade the devotees can simply look forward to attending the next one.

Good shows often end with fire works and at Wat Dhammakaya, as with so many aspects of showmanship, the creatives behind the casting event put on a wonderful display. As the starry eyed crowds make their way out of the giant arena they are gently shepherded by the

angkok is a city of gleaming neon with overhead trains whistling by vast glass tower blocks, eight lane highways and endless bustle; but the metropolis also has another very different side. A side based on superstition and a firm belief in a parallel world of the spirits. Underpinning this are centuries of tradition, both Buddhist and pre-Buddhist. The Thai name for the city of Bangkok is ‘Krung Thep’ or ‘City of Angels’. Angels in this case really means deities and in Bangkok deities are everywhere. Every house has a smaller ‘spirit house’ attached – a place for those of the parallel world to reside. Hindu and Buddhist shrines and statues are everywhere, and Thai people perform regular rites to keep the spirits placated and on their side. All this superstition, animism and Brahmanism is mixed with Buddhist beliefs creating a heady potpourri of rituals.

Shrine – a place constructed to ensure the physical world acknowledges the spiritual one in a tradition going back millennia to the ebb and flow of ancient empires Ayuthaya, Sukhothai and Angkor. As one comes to this frantic intersection one is met by wafts of perfumed smoke, vendors selling flowers and offerings, all competing noisily for the custom of passing office workers. The pleasantly cacophonous sound of xylophone and double sided drums accompanies the traditional singing of a dance troupe performing steps and gestures that go back centuries. This is the Erawan Shrine, and it is one of the most spiritually significant places for Bangkok residents. They come here for help in times of trouble, to make merit and give offerings that may give them good luck in future enterprises, love or health.

This is the Erawan Shrine, and it is one of the most spiritually significant places for Bangkok residents.

The centre of the shrine is a small statue of the four-faced Hindu God, Brahma. Surrounding him are huge garlands of flowers, never-endingly replenished by devotees, crowds of people queuing up to light incense at slow burning lanterns, people kneeling in supplication and prayer absorbed in their communications with the spirits surrounding them. Perhaps most spectacular are the dancers housed in a pavilion to the western end of the shrine. Dressed in shimmering traditional silk with elaborate gold head-dresses they are hired to dance for worshippers giving spiritual strength to the prayers and aspirations. These dance moves and sounds go back centuries to the empire of Ayuthaya and ultimately the sacking of the Khmer empire of Angkor, when the Khmer Royal dance troupe was carried away as cultural booty. Prices for a dance range from 260 baht to 710 baht, depending on the number of women. The dancers are paid not only to accompany present prayers, but are also often hired in gratitude for an earlier favour that devotees believe the shrine granted before. To all intents and purposes, the Erawan Shrine is one of Thailand’s major spiritual junctions. It was first built in 1956. It was thought that construction work on the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel had disturbed evil forces and those forces were taking the lives of the construction

workers. There were also many injuries and the work was running way over time. A valuable shipment of Italian marble was also inexplicably completely lost. It was thought that all bad luck this might have been due to the foundations of the building having been laid on an inauspicious date. The fact that the Rajaprasong intersection was also a place, historically, where criminals were publically executed did nothing to dispel fears of a curse. The situation got so serious amongst the superstitious construction workers from the far away rural areas, that they were too spooked to carry on working and, at one point, they even went on strike demanding that a ritual and offering be performed in order to appease the property’s assumed malevolent spirits. The fact that the Rajaprasong intersection was also a place, historically, where criminals were publically executed did nothing to dispel fears of a curse.

Management realised that action had to be taken. Astrologers were consulted and they advised the building of a shrine to counteract the terrible bad karma that had befallen the area. A magnificent image of the four-faced Brahma was designed by the Department of Fine Arts and especially cast and gilded. It was consecrated on November 26th 1956. Once the shrine was finished and blessed, the deaths came to a halt, work was completed and the new hotel prospered for three decades. This amazing turnaround made the shrine one of the most revered places in Thailand and in a short time it became a Mecca for devotees wishing to make merit. In 1987, the original hotel building was knocked down and the site was used for what is now the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. The shrine, however, remained in place. At the start of this century, shocking events unfolded at the Erawan Shrine in an explosion of lethal drama. In the early hours of March 26th 2006, Thanakorn Pakdeepol stood at the base of the shrine and took a hammer to the revered statue of Brahma and smashed it into pieces. The deity’s four-faced head, torso, six arms and weapons were shattered. Thanakorn was then set upon by the crowd full of fear and anger at this act of wanton vandalism. They beat him to death there and then. Two street sweepers were later arrested and charged for the lethal act of vengeance.

Shock reverberated throughout the city and the government took quick measures to allay fears and replaced the destroyed statue. They temporarily shielded the shattered remains with a white curtain. The shrine was soon reopened with a photo of the destroyed statue on the plinth. On the 21st of May, a hot sunny day, a replacement statue was unveiled. It was cast from the same mould as the original and contained many fragments of the original in its casting, giving it the mystical authenticity of sameness that would inspire the confidence of the people of Bangkok. The story of Thanakorn Pakdeepol, the vandal who took the hammer to the revered statue and paid the ultimate price, is a sad one. His father, Sayant Pakdeepol, revealed his son had suffered terrible mental illness and said of those who had taken his life, “Doing something like this is not the act of people with good beliefs, of those with real faith in Brahma. Murder is an immoral act and people with morality would not have done what they did. In 2010, the Erawan Shrine was once again the witness to violence. This time it was political in nature as conflict erupted between armed groups and people died as a result. But the Erawan Shrine remained, and once again survived the turmoil with its sanctity intact. Any day of the week one can wander past it and see the complexity of Thai faith on show with its rich mixture of religions and traditions wreathed in clouds of smoke accompanied by murmured prayers and ancient dance steps that are really just echoes reverberating through the centuries.

At the start of this century shocking events unfolded at the Erawan Shrine in an explosion of lethal drama.

SHARED OWNERSHIP IN ASIA The time is now to get your piece of paradise words By: Michael Aumock

F

2) Where did you get your start in shared ownership?

ractional Q&A with Michael Aumock, Founder and CEO of The Delfineo Group. The Delfineo Group is a luxury consulting company, specializing in shared ownership, who just opened an office in Asia.

Shared ownership started to take off in Colorado, where I’m from, about 15 years ago; and 13 years ago, I started managing some of the multi-million dollar ski homes that I listed and sold as a broker…eventually I got tired of listening to the owners complain about paying the bills in a house that they only used for 4-8 weeks per year, so I designed a fractional program for one of them…essentially to help defray the cost. The first one was a challenge, because I let the original owner call the shots. He had me design it so it would benefit him much more than any other owner. After that, I learned my lesson. Being a non-partial 3rd party is one

1) Tell us a little bit about who you are, and your background in shared ownership? Well, my name is Michael Aumock…my friends call my Mickey. I come from the US where I have been running a consulting company for most of the last 15 years. I specialize in high-value or luxury assets…acquisition, disposition, managing and maintaining. Although I’ve located and purchased many interesting and exotic toys along the way, including mini-subs, helicopters, jets, etc…I specialize in luxury real estate and yachts.

of the keys to success in the fractional space. After cutting my teeth in real estate, I was hired to set up a fractional program for a yacht club in California. 3) What’s the difference between a club and fractional/shared ownership? Shared ownership definitely gives you title to something… you own it. Usually, (if it’s being done right, and without giving too many of my secrets away) you create a separate company that buys the asset in question, and then your purchase buys you a relative percentage of that company. This accomplishes two things: A) it protects the investors by having a company between them and any liability, and B) it simplifies the paperwork of transferring ownership when shares are bought and sold. A club is usually designed to be a bigger entity at the start…hundreds of members instead of a dozen owners or less. There typically is no equity, so if you want to leave, you just send a letter and stop paying your dues. 4) Why now? What’s going to make this work? The timing is right for Asia in general, and especially Phuket. The tourism numbers easily support fractional yacht programs in several markets at multiple price points. At the right price-point the risk is minimal because the charter prices are high enough in Phuket to offset unused fractional time, and the Asian market has a growing interest in boats and yachting. 5) What are the advantages? The biggest advantage is cash outlay for services/goods received. Consider the fact that most people use their yacht less than 6 weeks/year, then anyone who can use “all” of their 6 weeks for what amounts to 1/8th of the cost of a whole boat, is WAY ahead of the game…. and I always hear the same argument. “I want to use it WHEN I WANT TO USE IT!” Fine. Just convince Mother Nature to stay on your good side and never rain or get choppy seas on the days when you want to get the yacht out, and I’ll let you use that argument on me. Until then, just like we learned when we were kids… it’s nice to share your toys. 6) Who is your ideal client? My ideal client is the guy who was always interested in yachts, but didn’t grow up around water, or his dad was into something else and he ended up learning

about violins, farming, or tennis. Now, he’s successful and embarrassed to ask the basic questions about yacht ownership. When that guy calls, we put him to ease, answer some of his questions, and invite him to discover the answer to the rest of his questions on his own, in his own time.

But likewise, if you’re dealing with someone good, he knows whose weekend plans are easily changed if you suddenly have to entertain Scarlet Johannsen on the boat. 8) What are the benefits of shared ownership? For owners? Local community? Any downside?

7) What should people watch out for when they are looking at a fractional investment?

It’s a safe way for owners to dip their toe into yacht ownership without any prior knowledge about yachting. You can make a small investment and in a few years have a solid understanding of boating and yachts and what you like and don’t like, so that you can move to buy your own vessel, or just buy a few more fractions around the world. A yacht that’s being used generates jobs and incomes for the local community. Local communities benefit because when the yacht is being used, there are provisions that must be purchased, a crew that must be employed, caterers that bring food to the yacht, a marina that must be paid, a manager that runs the “business end” of the boat, and the maintenance people who are required to repair engines or clean the hulls. There is an entire industry of yacht support

Unrealistic returns. Unrealistic access. You can’t pay for a 30-day fraction and expect to get Christmas or Easter every year. It’s not going to happen. But most importantly I think they should look out for a good solid program operator, who’s seen a few fractions before. Someone who can design a program for the people who will use it, NOT design it so it’s easy for him to operate (there are a few shortcuts that can simplify operation, but limit access). Someone who you like, who stays in touch and is familiar with your lifestyle. Someone that you can live with hearing an occasional “no” from, because sometimes there will be a “no”. “Sorry, the boat is booked and Mr. XYZ is planning to use it this weekend.”

personnel that benefit each time that boat goes out that the non-boating community never sees. Plus, I’ve never seen anyone stomping around in a bad mood on their boat. 9) What are your goals? Individually and as a company? Interesting question. Our goal as a company is to sell fractions and create a small fleet of yachts that is used by happy owners throughout Asia and beyond. Personally? I just want to share my love of the sea (which came late in life for me), and give the opportunity to as many people as possible to discover the magic of yachting. To help people conquer their fear of water and the unknown, and give the average businessman a legal and highly enjoyable way to hold his family hostage and out of cell phone range for a few days so they can be reminded of what’s REALLY important in this world. Pheromones on pheromones or everything you always wanted to know about sex (but were afraid to ask) pheromones (from the ancient greek: pherein ‘to carry, bear, convey’ and hormon ‘impel, stimulate’) are natural substances which act as a form of biochemical communication between the members of certain species. other species are not able to communicate in this way. the well-known sex pheromones are accompanied by trail pheromones and alarm pheromones as well as others. the first pheromone to be scientifically detected was bombykol in the silkworm bombyx mori in 1959. peter karlson, martin lüscher and adolf butenandt coined the term pheromone. in the same year karlson and lüscher defined pheromones as: ‘substances emitted by an individual which elicit specific responses in an individual belonging to the same species.’ in the case of pheromones, the chemical communication between organisms is based on the same principles as the technical transmission of a signal. a transmitter (e.g. the gland of a female insect) sends the signal in the form of a chemical substance. this is then carried by a medium such as water or air. the substance arrives at the recipient, e.g. is detected by the pheromone receptors in the antenna of male insect, and then triggers a behavioural response. sometimes the biosynthesis of the pheromone cannot take place until the preliminary biochemical stages have been absorbed in the form of certain alkaloids from food plants. in this case the sex pheromone also signals the incidence of food sources. until now, pheromonic substances have only been thoroughly investigated and understood in various insect species, such as butterflies, bark beetles, bees, ants, flies and cockroaches. hence men and women, for example, emit androstenone. produced during the conversion of the sex hormone testosterone, this substance passes through the perspiratory glands to the surface of the body. experimental trials have shown that in moderate doses androstenone slightly enhances the male and female assessment of attractiveness. equally, men feel more aroused when they absorb certain female sex pheromones. the findings of such studies, however, are controversial and cannot be clearly proven.

The result the system produces isn’t definitive but rather subjective, a snapshot of the world’s best in 2012, in a landscape that is ever changing. The type of cuisine served nor the location has any impact on the result. It simply recognized Nahm as being one of the world’s best 50 restaurants. It is not saying that Nahm serves the best Thai food or that it is the best restaurant in Bangkok. The result did come as a surprise to some in Thailand, but looking at the wider global dining scene the result is a logical development. Chef David Thompson’s Nahm at the Halkin in London was the first Thai restaurant to win a Michelin star, and was in the Best 100 last year.

Chef David Thompson’s Nahm at the Halkin in London was the first Thai restaurant to win a Michelin star, and was in the Best 100 last year.

With the abundance of fresh local ingredients available here it is easier to produce better Thai food in Bangkok compared to London. Nahm Bangkok making this year’s Best 50 can be seen as natural progression of a highly talented chef’s quest for culinary excellence. It is part of a growing trend for more restaurants in Asia to be ranked in the World’s Best 50. This year saw a 50% growth in the number of restaurants in Asia making it onto the prestigious list. Last year there were four; this year there are six. This year’s top restaurant in Asia is Iggy’s Singapore in 26th place moving one rung up the ladder. Just behind them is Narisawa in 27th place down from 20th; closely followed by Nihoryon Ryugin who dropped 8 places this year being 28th; Waku Ghin in 39th place is a new entry this year and Amber has also dropped 7 places to being ranked 44th this year. Trends and favorites are always changing; French Laundry was rated Best in the World in 2003 and 2004, this year it is ranked 43rd. It doesn’t mean that they aren’t as good as they once were rather, newer restaurants have arrived on the scene and have caught the attention and have done something different to excite the collective palate of the academy. The awards are a reflective snapshot of the world’s dining scene. “I am delighted to receive this accolade,” said David as he accepted the award in London. “It recognizes the lengths that we go to at Nahm to deliver Thai food in

The business advantage is that the restaurant will be full most of the time. On a recent visit to Phuket, Jordi Roca of El Celler de Can Rocca in Catalonia, currently ranked 2nd in the world, told me to get a table in his restaurant in Spain guests need to book six months to a year in advance. Something unheard of in Thailand, but accepted in most of the world’s major cities. Maybe as our dining scene goes global the culture of advanced booking and pre-payment to secure a table will come in line with the international norm.

David is a passionate culinary historian and recipe collector, his goal to preserve old recipes before they are lost forever. He is equally stubborn in accepting certain produce from specific locations as part of his quest for excellence; compromise will never be found in his dictionary. What cooking in Bangkok allows him and in London denies him is access to local ingredients, going to local markets and playing in the kitchen. His goal to deliver proper, decent, home-style Thai food done really well. To explain the multiple dishes served simultaneously he has engaged a team of highly informative Thai

The main course was a selection of dishes each served on stylish scallop edged Limoge chinaware. They included Geng Gati Bpuu Tarlae,a southern mud crab curry made with dried red chili, red tumeric shrimp paste and red shallots to produce a rich, salty, slightly sweet and sour taste. Soft shell crab served with pomello as a salad. A very tasty makrel curry, and on another plate pan fried fish balls. And a snake head jungle curry made with a local fish pla chorn, raised in a rice paddy field. An ugly fish that David describes as, “firm, plump, sweet and entirely delicious.”

My meal started with an exquisite Mar Hor amuse bouche, small triangular slices topped with minced pork mixed with coriander, palm sugar, garlic and red chili that had a rich, sweet, spicy, and caramelized taste. The suggested wine was Schlumberger Riesling 2006 from Alsace. Being slightly dry, and with its fresh citrus fruit flavors interwoven with delicate notes of spice and ginger it’s comfortable to drink with Thai food. With multiple dishes and a variety of flavors being on the table at the same time the Western concept specific pairing doesn’t work with Thai style dining.

The meal progressed with a selection of canapés; a spicy mussel satay with a fresh thinly sliced cucumber to balance the taste; crispy pancake roll stuffed with salty chicken and; a small bowl of Larb moo, a spicy pork dish from the street with a strong taste. After the first wave of dishes the taste of chilies was still tingling on my tongue.
