Fashion drawings, contemporary photographs, posters, art pieces and museum artifacts illustrate this complete volume of 1,116 years of fashion history that not only offers an overview of the historical changes of the folk and national costumes of Hungary and the impact of European fashion in the country, but also highlights the periods when Budapest acted as a fashion centre, and even provides an insight into the fashion issue within the planned economy of the Socialist Era. While following the changes in fashion, Hungary’s history and culture can also be learnt unawares. Authors Katalin Földi-Dózsa, Ildikó Simonovics, Judit Szatmári and Péter Szűcs follow the remarkable and important stages of Hungarian fashion in the international context from the time of the Magyar Settlement up to today.

Miközben a divatváltozásokat követjük, észrevétlenül sokat tanulhatunk Magyarország történetéről és kultúrájáról. A szerzők, F. Dózsa Katalin, Simonovics Ildikó, Szatmári Judit és Szűcs Péter a honfoglalástól kezdve egészen napjainkig követik a hazai divat nemzetközi szinten is figyelemre méltó, és fontos állomásait.

Az ifjú István király a Képes Krónika születése időpontjának, a 14. század közepének lovagi viseletét hordja, sodronypáncéllal, csípőövvel, ami felett az ujjatlan zeke az Árpád-ház színeivel, pirossal és ezüst/fehérrel csíkozott.

A koronázási palástot felirata szerint 1031-ben G i z e l l a királyné és S z e n t I s t v á n készíttette és ajándékozta a székesfehérvári Szűz Mária-templomnak. A palást eredetileg harang alakú miseruha lehetett, amit a 12. és 13. század fordulóján alakítottak át a ma ismert félkör alakra és egészítették ki a bizánci selyemre hímzett, gyöngydíszes gallérral. A ma félkör alakú köpeny rozettamintás bizánci selyemalapjára aranyfonallal hímezték a bonyolult kompozíciójú egyházi programot, amelynek pontos meghatározásán a kutatók ma is vitáznak.

P r i n c e G é z a, father of I s t v á n, as a Christian prince in the Illuminated Chronicle. Géza wears a princely crown, a long-sleeved, floor-length tunic and a semicircular cape reaching almost to the ground, fastened under his chin with a round clasp.

The young king István wearing the apparel of a knight from the time of the writing of the Illuminated Chronicle (mid-14th century): a suit of mail armour with a belt over the hips, topped by a sleeveless doublet in the colours of the House of Árpád (red with white or silver stripes).

According to the inscription on this coronation mantle, it was made in 1031 for Q u e e n G i z e l l a and S a i n t I s t v á n, and was presented by them to the Church of the Virgin Mary in Székesfehérvár. The mantle was probably originally a bell-shaped chasuble which was transformed around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries into its current semicircular shape and was trimmed with a collar of embroidered Byzantine silk decorated with pearls. The Byzantine silk base of the currently semicircular-shaped, rosetta-patterned mantle is embroidered with gold thread, showing the Church’s complex programme, and the exact meaning of which is still a matter of debate among scholars.

An unknown artist painted M a r i a T h e r e s a as a boy wearing a red mente trimmed with white fur and a green dolman. The message of the painting is clear: she is the heiress to the Hungarian royal throne.

A 17. század végén az egyesült európai seregek Magyarország területéről kiűzték a törököket, és a három részre szakadt országot a Habsburgok a saját uralmuk alatt egyesítették. A magyarok számára azonban ez egy, az akaratát erőteljesebben érvényesítő új hatalmat jelentett, ami ellen 1703 és 1711 között I I . R á k ó c z i F e r e n c fejedelem vezetésével fegyverrel lázadtak fel.

Ez az időszak a magyar viselet fénykora volt. A mai értelemben vett egyenruha ekkor még nem létezett, legfeljebb az egyes csapatok ruhájának a színeit határozták meg. Mind a lázadó kurucok, mind a Habsburg-párti labancok magyar ruhát viseltek, ami kiválóan megfelelt a lovas harcmodorhoz.

A dolmány zsinórozása megvédte a testet a kardcsapásoktól, a szintén erősebben zsinórozott, szőrmével bélelt mentét, ha melegük volt, panyókára, azaz félvállra lehetett vetni. Minden fontos szerszámot, fegyvert a sálövet felváltó többsoros zsinórövbe tudtak rögzíteni, így a kezek szabadon maradtak a harchoz. A szűk nadrág ívelt formából szabott szárai oldalt és hátul a csípő alatt találkoztak, fordított U alakban követve az ülepet, úgy, hogy a lovast a varrás sehol sem nyomta, mert nem érintkezett a nyereggel. Az öltözéket puha szárú, térd alá érő, ívelt elejű csizma vagy bokacipő egészítette ki.

At the end of the 17th century, allied European troops pushed back the Turks from the territory of Hungary, and the Habsburgs took over the country (which had been split into three parts) under its own rule. From the perspective of the Hungarians however, this meant a new, more forceful authority in power. An armed uprising against them was led by P r i n c e F e r e n c R á k ó c z i between 1703 and 1711.

This was the golden age of the Hungarian dress. The current concept of a “uniform” did not exist at the time. At the most, certain factions would determine the colour of their clothing. Both the Hungarian rebels and the Habsburg loyalists wore Hungarian clothing, which was perfectly suited to equestrian warfare. The braid covering the front of the dolman protected the body from blows from a sword, as did the mente, also heavily covered in braid and lined with fur. If the rider was too warm, he could sling the latter over his shoulder and wear it as a cape. The rope belt could hold all important tools and weapons, thus leaving hands free for battle. The legs of their fitted trousers were cut in a curved shape, and met on the side and at the back, below the hips, making an upsidedown “U” at the crotch – thus nowhere did the seams even come into contact with the saddle so it did not bother their comfort. The outfit was completed by a pair of soft-legged boots with a curved front, that reached below the knee, or ankle boots.

A 19. századi társadalom osztályokra, sőt rétegekre bomlott, melyeket elég merev határok választottak el egymástól. Viselkedésüket, öltözködésüket íratlan törvények szabályozták, amelyek be nem tartását súlyos retorzió követte – a társaság megszólása, sőt a vétkes és családja kirekesztése, amely nemcsak morális, de konkrét megélhetési problémákat is okozott az elsősorban összeköttetések, rokoni és ismeretségi szálak által mozgatott társadalomban. Bár számtalan öltözködési tanácsadó jelent meg, a szabályokat csak úgy lehetett jól elsajátítani, ha valaki már gyerekkora óta tanulta őket. Az előírások egyik célja a tisztességes hölgyek (feleségek, eladó leányok) megkülönböztetése volt az ún. „félvilági” kitartott nőktől.

A boka megmutatása mellett a smink, púder, sőt még arckrém használata is erkölcstelennek számított. Nem csoda, ha úgy tartották, 30 év felett már nem fiatalok a nők, 40 felett pedig már öregasszonyok.

Délben egy magára adó úriasszony akkor is átöltözött, ha nem várt vendéget, mert bármikor betoppanhatott valaki. Délutáni eseményekhez látogatóruhát, este színházba, vacsorára hosszú ujjú, de kivágott ruhát, bálba ujjatlan, mélyen kivágott toalettet illett viselni. A ruhák anyaga, díszítése is életkortól függött. A fiatal lányoknak egyszerűen kellett öltözniük. A fiatalasszonyok öltözhettek a legfeltűnőbben, míg 40 felett már nem illett divatozni. A fiúk az érettségi után egyszerre felnőtteknek számítottak, ekkor kapták meg azt a néhány öltönyfajtát, amit ha nem híztak ki, esetleg egy életen keresztül viseltek. Egy férfinek ugyanis nem illett az öltözködésével, a változó divattal törődnie.

A kisfiúkat és kislányokat 4-5 éves korukig egyformán szoknyába öltöztették. A nagyobb fiúk legtöbbször térdnadrágos matrózruhát hordtak. A lányok számára szélesebb volt a választék, a divatlapok is többet foglalkoztak öltöztetésükkel. A térdig érő szoknya 10 éves koruk után kezdett hosszabbodni, az első földig érő alj már a nagylányságot jelentette. A ruhákat férjhezmenetelükig mindig a mama választotta, ízlése ellen nem volt apelláta.

Society in the 19th century was broken down into classes or rather layers with fairly strict divides between them. Unwritten laws governed how members of each should dress, and there were reprisals if you did not keep to the rules - rude remarks would be made and the guilty party and their family could be ostracized. That caused not only moral problems, but also threatened the livelihood of the transgressor and their relatives in a society that thrived on family relations and personal connections. Although numerous guides on how to dress were published, the rules could only be mastered fully if somebody had learnt them since childhood. One purpos of the rules was to distinguish respectable women (wives, marriageable girls) from so-called “demimondaine”, kept women. In addition to showing one’s ankles, the use of make-up, powder and even face cream was deemed immoral. It is no wonder that women aged over 30 were no longer considered to be young and those over 40 were already thought of as old.

The rules were different in the various layers of society, depending on the occasion and the age of the individual. Women of the middle classes wore so-called washing-dresses before noon in which they performed their household tasks, except if they went to take a stroll, when fancier attire was called for. At noon, a refined gentlewomen would change her clothes even if she was not expecting guests, because somebody could drop by unexpectedly at any time. For afternoon events women would wear visiting dresses, while in the evening for the theatre or dinner a long-sleeved, but low-necked dress was appropriate. For balls, the customary dress was a sleeveless gown with décolletage. The fabric of the clothes and the degree of adornment also depended on age. Young girls were expected to dress simply. Young wives could dress the most strikingly, while it was not the done thing to concern oneself with fashion over the age of 40. Young men were regarded as adults after their school-leaving examination, and it was at that time that they received a few suits which they might wear for the rest of their lives, if they did not put on too much weight. It was not thought appropriate for men to concern themselves with sartorial matters and changing fashions.

Until the age of four or five, boys and girls were dressed alike in skirts. Older boys typically wore sailor-suits with knee-length trousers.

The choice for girls was wider, and fashion magazines paid more attention to their apparel. After the age of ten, their skirts, which until then had reached the knees, began to lengthen, and the first skirt sweeping the ground represented reaching maturity. Until girls were married, their mother chose what clothes they would wear, and there was no appeal against her taste.

MANÖKENCSILLAGOK A SZOCIALIZMUSBAN TOP MODELS IN THE SOCIALIST PERIOD Minden évtizedben volt 10-12 népszerű próbakisasszony, akik a kifutó mellett különböző kereskedelmi kiadványokban, képes magazinokban, majd az 1970-es évektől rendszeressé váló hirdetéseken, plakátokon, naptárakon szerepeltek. A nagyközönség szinte barátnőként tekintett kedvenc modelljeire, nevüket az egész ország ismerte, még a férfiak is.

A fotómodell- és manökenszakma még nem vált külön, nem léteztek erre szakosodott iskolák. Jellemző volt viszont, hogy egy-egy befutott lány akár évtizedeken át dolgozott. Ugyanakkor a szocializmus nem ismerte el a hivatalos manöken státuszt. Az ötvenes évek csillagait például vasalónőként, varrónőként, az 1960-as években adminisztrátorként, szervezőként szerződtették a ruhaipari cégek. A manökenek hétköznapjait ugyanaz a kettőség jellemezte, mint a korszak divatját általában. A vidéki művelődési házban való fellépés vagy a hátul csipesszel összetűzdelt, elméretezett konfekciómodellben való fotózás úgyanúgy az életük része volt, mint a luxusszállodák fényes kifutóin vagy a nemzetközi kiállítások pódiumán való pózolás a legszebb ruhakölteményekben.

In each decade there were ten to twelve popular models who appeared not only on the catwalks, but also in various trade publications, picture magazines, and from the 1970s in advertisements, on posters and on calendars. The public almost looked on their favourite models as their close friends and their names were known to the whole country, including men.

The professions of photo model and catwalk model had not yet become separate, and there were no specialist modelling schools. It was typical, however, that a girl who had got her breakthrough would work for decades. At the same time, modelling was not recognised as an official form of employment under socialism. The modelling stars were contracted to work for fashion companies as ironing ladies or seamstresses in the 1950s and as administrators or organisers in the 1960s, for example. The everyday lives of the models were marked by the same duality that was typical of the fashion of the period. Appearing at cultural centres in the provinces and being photographed in wrong-sized ready-to-wear pieces pinched together at the back using clothes pegs was just as much part of their life as posing on the glamorous catwalks of luxury hotels or on the podiums of international fairs in the most fabulous creations.

She not only wore the most beautiful Hungarian haute couture designs, but also performed successfully on the catwalk for large Parisian fashion houses, she was one of the first for Nina Ricci.

Az átlagember az újságban közölt jobb modellek és szabásminták alapján varrta vagy varratta meg ruhatárának legfrissebb darabjait. A gyenge papírminőség ellenére a szocializmus korszakának kiváló színvonalú, kultikus divatlapja volt! A lapot F a r a g ó I l o n a, majd 1975-től Z s i g m o n d M á r t a szerkesztette.

Klári az 1950-es, Zsuzsa a 1960-as években kezdte a szakmát.

Klári finom, szlávos arcával, törékeny szépségével, Zsuzsa kissé vágott, keleties szemével futott be. Mindketten Rotschild Klára kedvencei voltak.

Kultúrmissziós feladatot látott el az 1961–1975 között évente négyszer, színes borítóval, az Ez a divathoz képest jobb minőségű papíron megjelenő új divatlap, a Pesti Divat. Nemzetközi hírügynökségektől és a KGST-országok Divatintézeteitől átvett, továbbá a Ruhaipari Tervező Vállalat tervezői által készített rajzok és lefotózott modellek alapján adták közre szezonális előrejelzéseiket. A lap főszerkesztője N á d o r V e r a, képszerkesztője M é s z á r o s É v a volt.

K l á r i F e k e t e on the cover of fashion magazine Ez a divat (This is Fashion), March 1960. Klári Fekete’s modelling career took off at the end of the 1950s. Klári, who spoke English and Russian, was employed by the Kötszövőipari Mintázó (Knit-Weave Pattern Factory) as an ironing lady. Together with Dóri Patz, she was one of the longest working models.

During the socialist period in Hungary there were just two fashion magazines. The magazine Ez a divat, which was published from 1948, informed its readers not only about Hunga­rian designs, but also about the latest trends using foreign fashion photographs and reports from 1956 onwards. Everyday women sewed or had sewn the latest pieces in their wardrobe based on the better designs and patterns published in the magazine. Although the quality of the paper was poor, Ez a divat was an excellent-qua­lity, cult fashion magazine of the socialist period. The magazine was edited by I l o n a F a r a g ó, who was succeeded by M á r t a Z s i g m o n d in 1975.

Klári and Zsuzsa began modelling in the 1950s and in the 1960s respectively. Klári was a hit with her delicate Slavic face and fragile beauty and Zsuzsa with her slightly slanted eastern eyes. Both were favourites of Klára Rotschild.

The new fashion magazine Pesti Divat, published quarterly between 1961 and 1975 with a coloured cover and printed on paper of better quality than Ez a divat, had a cultural mission. It forecast seasonal trends based on sketches and photographed models from international news agencies and the fashion institutes of the Comecon countries, as well as the work of the designers of the Clothing Industry Design Enterprise. The magazine’s editor-in-chief was V e r a N á d o r and its picture editor was É v a M é s z á r o s.

Klári az 1950-es, Zsuzsa a 1960-as években kezdte a szakmát.

Klári finom, szlávos arcával, törékeny szépségével, Zsuzsa kissé vágott, keleties szemével futott be. Mindketten Rotschild Klára kedvencei voltak.

Kultúrmissziós feladatot látott el az 1961–1975 között évente négyszer, színes borítóval, az Ez a divathoz képest jobb minőségű papíron megjelenő új divatlap, a Pesti Divat. Nemzetközi hírügynökségektől és a KGST-országok Divatintézeteitől átvett, továbbá a Ruhaipari Tervező Vállalat tervezői által készített rajzok és lefotózott modellek alapján adták közre szezonális előrejelzéseiket. A lap főszerkesztője N á d o r V e r a, képszerkesztője M é s z á r o s É v a volt.

K l á r i F e k e t e on the cover of fashion magazine Ez a divat (This is Fashion), March 1960. Klári Fekete’s modelling career took off at the end of the 1950s. Klári, who spoke English and Russian, was employed by the Kötszövőipari Mintázó (Knit-Weave Pattern Factory) as an ironing lady. Together with Dóri Patz, she was one of the longest working models.

During the socialist period in Hungary there were just two fashion magazines. The magazine Ez a divat, which was published from 1948, informed its readers not only about Hunga­rian designs, but also about the latest trends using foreign fashion photographs and reports from 1956 onwards. Everyday women sewed or had sewn the latest pieces in their wardrobe based on the better designs and patterns published in the magazine. Although the quality of the paper was poor, Ez a divat was an excellent-qua­lity, cult fashion magazine of the socialist period. The magazine was edited by I l o n a F a r a g ó, who was succeeded by M á r t a Z s i g m o n d in 1975.

Klári and Zsuzsa began modelling in the 1950s and in the 1960s respectively. Klári was a hit with her delicate Slavic face and fragile beauty and Zsuzsa with her slightly slanted eastern eyes. Both were favourites of Klára Rotschild.

The new fashion magazine Pesti Divat, published quarterly between 1961 and 1975 with a coloured cover and printed on paper of better quality than Ez a divat, had a cultural mission. It forecast seasonal trends based on sketches and photographed models from international news agencies and the fashion institutes of the Comecon countries, as well as the work of the designers of the Clothing Industry Design Enterprise. The magazine’s editor-in-chief was V e r a N á d o r and its picture editor was É v a M é s z á r o s.

Dóra Mojzes and the celebrities Dóra is the only Hungarian designer to be featured in two international fashion books together with such names as V i v i e n n e W e s t w o o d and V i k t o r & R o l f.

She has never promoted her brand consciously and she gets most foreign commissions via her website.

Fashion drawings, contemporary photographs, posters, art pieces and museum artifacts illustrate this complete volume of 1,116 years of fashion history that not only offers an overview of the historical changes of the folk and national costumes of Hungary and the impact of European fashion in the country, but also highlights the periods when Budapest acted as a fashion centre, and even provides an insight into the fashion issue within the planned economy of the Socialist Era. While following the changes in fashion, Hungary’s history and culture can also be learnt unawares. Authors Katalin Földi-Dózsa, Ildikó Simonovics, Judit Szatmári and Péter Szűcs follow the remarkable and important stages of Hungarian fashion in the international context from the time of the Magyar Settlement up to today.
