Soca icon Ronnie McIntosh said it best in his hit song ‘ENT’ when he sang “Carnival is colour, Carnival is Mas…” Without those elements, carnival would be a drab affair and photos like this Richard Lyder stunner wouldn’t exist. The image captures a masquerader exhibiting the passion and exuberance that has become synonymous with crossing the world’s biggest stage. She came to enjoy the spectacle and ended up being part and parcel of the display. This is what Mas is all about!

he dust has settled and sadly we must say farewell to another amazing Carnival season. The season was short, but spectacular and there is no doubt many of you are already experiencing symptoms of Carnival withdrawal. I must send a special shout of congratulations to reigning soca monarch Voice for pulling off a three peat in that competition. The title of his smash single perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the just concluded season. It was truly a “Year For Love” in fetes and mas and coincidentally Ash Wednesday was Valentine’s Day. It was also a ‘Year For Youth.’ Young talents such as Helon Francis and Myron B claimed the thrones of elder statesmen such as Chalkdust and Gypsy in kaiso and extempo respectively. I pay special tribute to young arranger Duvone Stewart for being the first arranger to lead both Large and Medium bands to pan glory in the same year. With that said, the pan competitions were executed very smoothly and kudos go out to Pan Trinbago. To all the other winners in their various spectrums, congratulations and keep up the good work. There were some dark points to note. A purported terror strike threatened to shut down festivities. Also, the economic recession saw both public and private entities cut funding to support various art forms. However, we are a country of survivors who know how to make do and the show remained the greatest on earth despite the challenges. It is my hope that this magazine does justice to the fantastic experience that was C2K18. Do enjoy and be safe until we reach the savannah in 2019 to wine and fling it up again.

ROW Even though it was a short season, there was no shortage of music releases or fetes in 2018. In contrast to 2017 where the season was drawn out and even the music was decidedly slower, the return of power soca seemed to match the frenetic pace of the festive period. Of course, there were changes. Government and private sector cutbacks meant a reduction in prize monies allocated to the major competitions. The actual shows were scaled down and a lot less grand. In fact, calypsonians only competed with one song at this year’s Dimanche Gras. Some adjustments made for a much smoother Panorama competition as far as time management. This allowed for a program which could 16

be judged better as the adjudicators remained fresher throughout. No doubt, there will be some that say the results were still not to their liking. In any event, despite any perceived controversy or bobol, the competitions took place as advertised and the results are in. Here are some of the people who stand proudly in Winner’s Row.

Top Talking Points

Amid all the revelry and constant carefree behavior that constantly permeates Carnival, there were some moments that made us pause and ponder if only for a split second. These headlining moments will stand out after the snake oil has washed down the drains and we get ready for carnival again. Here are some of 2018’s biggest stories in no particular order. Permission To Wine With the global fallout from the #MeToo movement that started in Hollywood, it came as no surprise that a new level of consciousness would trickle down to

Trinidad and Tobago. However, we didn’t quite expect to see it in this form. During his weekly Carnival police media briefing; acting ASP Michael Jackman advised that wining on someone without their permission can count as the unlawful act of “unwanted touching” and can be deemed an assault. The thought of revelers having to channel their prom days and politely ask “May I have this dance” on the road and in fetes was hilarious to many and the meme army did not disappoint. Some went as far as making “Permission” ID’s which they could easily flip to allow or deny bumper access. What else did you expect from Trinis?

by local authorities who suggested that an attack could still be possible. There were murmurings in some circles that the plot could result in the cancellation of Carnival. However, the aftermath of such a decision may have caused more destruction than if the actual plot did occur. Instead, the denizens cared little as they feted and masqueraded away with reckless abandon. In fact, such was the power of the season that some people interviewed by our reporters did not even know of any such news until Ash Wednesday or when the questions were posed to them. Go figure!

Terror Plot Threatens Carnival Both the US Embassy and the United Kingdom's Foreign Office in Trinidad and Tobago issued security alerts to their nationals in respect to what was reported as a foiled terror threat planned for Carnival. They stated that while the terror plot was thwarted, citizens and government personnel should exercise “additional caution and increased situational awareness if they participate in Carnival events." The plot was confirmed www.amgtt.com

C2K16’S TOP TALKING POINTS Carnival Cut Up Ting Early in the season we were hit with yet another stolen song bombshell (seems pretty common in Trinidad every carnival). It was alleged by a fledgling artiste known as Five G that The Ultimate Rejects stole elements – including the hook – from his 2012 recording “We Doh Biznez for their 2017 mega hit Full Extreme.” He posted an extensive video on social media detailing the scenario and revealed that there are some similarities to both tracks once his is slowed down. Five G said both parties spoke on the matter with the assistance of lawyers and a potential settlement seemed likely before he was given a runaround. He then went on to say that he was not interested in a settlement, but full ownership of the song since it was “stolen”. 5 G ended the video by promoting his new tune which he said was produced by Kernal Roberts. This led many to believe that his claims were all for promotional purposes (Not to mention the fact that he made the claims public a year after the fact). Whatever, the case, this story did cause a stir. French Montana’s Third World Behaviour Gets Dragged French Montana visited the world's biggest carnival celebrations in Trinidad for a performance at Machel Monday and soon drew the ire of many. The Moroccan-born artiste referred to Trinidad as a Third World nation via use of a damning hashtag on his instagram account. He was soon dragged all over social media for his comments, prompting him to remove the hashtag. However, the damage had already been done and it is safe to say he has some warming up to do to the large Caribbean contingent who contributes to a major portion of his fan base. Rowlee’s Mudda Counts Controversial calypso/chutney singer Nermal “Massive” Gosein made headlines again when he released a tongue-in-cheek political commentary entitled “Rowlee Mudda Count.” The song spoke about the mother of a person called Rowlee being

20

ET&T CARNIVAL 2018

forced to take inventory after experiencing praedial larceny. Many understood it to be a double entendre which focused on the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and his mother. Several women’s groups condemned the tune and the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) also weighed in, labeling the controversial song "inappropriate," "derogatory” and “an insult” to mothers. While all of this negative press was bad; the real lowball was bowled when the music video was released depicting Rowlee’s mother in black face. Suffice it to say, this was one of the biggest talking-points for the season. Kalypso Review Struggles To Stay Afloat With 55 years under its belt, the iconic Kalypso Review is more than just a calypso tent… it is an institution. The tent was founded by the late, great Aldwyn ‘Lord Kitchener’ Roberts and is currently run by Michael Osouna, a.k.a. Sugar Aloes. Despite perennially featuring one of the strongest kaiso casts in the world, the tent came close to closing its doors as both government and private funding was slashed due to the economic downturn. This led some of the tent’s executive to take to the media to basically beg for assistance to keep the tent’s doors open. While they did get a little extra help, it was nowhere near the estimated figures needed to run the tent and several shows had to be cut. It also spoke of the lack of support from the general public who seldom go to calypso tents anymore. It would be remiss not to mention that several other shows such as the International Soca and Chutney Monarch competitions almost didn’t take place due to reduced funding. Prize monies across the board were also drastically reduced for most shows. Sunny Bling Braced Radio and television personality Sunny Bling has been known for his clowning around. Wildness and kicks is his modus operandi. As such, people embraced him

when he began performing his “Doubles and Bara” parody of Iwer George’s “Savannah” at numerous fetes. He was not shown the same love at Machel Monday as Machel Montano ordered that he not be allowed to take the stage. Sunny’s microphone was taken from him while he waited backstage to join Iwer during his set. Further investigation revealed that it was a bit of miscommunication leading up to the incident among Montano, Iwer and Sunny Bling. However, the whole incident led Bling to announce that he will never attend Machel Monday again. Soca Kingdom The biggest story of 2017 was undoubtedly the collaboration between Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin for Buss Head. This year, another legendary collab took place when the dynamic duo of two living legends ushered us into the Soca Kingdom. Both have been called the King of Soca in different eras, but we prefer to label both Austin “Super Blue” Lyons and Machel Montano Kings. Montano said the moment was always a dream for him and we must say that when the opportunity arose, the execution was perfect. The release of the song pretty much broke the internet and it was on almost every radio station at least twice per hour from that point on. Many will agree that it became a bit of overkill, but when it was all said and done, Soca Kingdom won this year’s Road March taking Machel to 9 wins overall while Super Blue has 10. You can’t beat that for a Champion Sound. www.amgtt.com

Usually you just have to mention Tribe is having an event and the tickets sell themselves. Even in the midst of a worldwide financial recession, this trend did not seem likely to change. Tribe Ice drew a large crowd to the Savannah to celebrate this year’s Black Ice theme. This cooler fete kicked off the carnival season right as it blended top-notch entertainment with good people. Speaking of good people‌ The female to male ratio was glorious. Carnival is woman after all. There were no complaints from us and the patrons seemed to agree it was a wonderful event.

I UP:

Billed as the “most iconic and anticipated carnival WET fete” by its promoters, IUP had the expectations of patrons high heading into the event. As advertised, it was wet and wild as Pier 1 was transformed into a moving mass of wet vibes. The patrons at this fete definitely knew how to party as they reveled in the return of power soca by several artistes. Much like last year’s edition of this epic gathering, the vibes was so nice it felt like the partying back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s again. Here is a peek at some of the action. The AIR Committee invited patrons to celebrate 5 years of the Out In South Premium Carnival Cooler Experience with them at their regular SAPA car park venue. Attendees didn’t need to be asked twice. They quickly copped their tickets and flooded the sold out location with their choice drinks in tow. They also did not hesitate to walk with an abundance of vibes. The southland was totally turnt not long after gates opened at 9pm on January 19th – a day that will be remembered for having one of the best events the San Fernando has seen.

EVOLVE:

ET&T CARNIVAL 2018

Central’s biggest carnival all-inclusive continued its evolution into one of the country’s most-respected all-inclusive fetes. Aptly titled Evolve, the shindig got swinging to the strains of soca and chutney from the region’s biggest stars in their respective genres. The promoters of this event did well to keep their promise of premium amenities and the food and the drinks were on point. ET&T Photographers took their photo-take-outing talents to Evolution Park for the fiesta. Here is a little of what they captured. For more, check www.facebook.com/ETnTweekly.

For one night, La Soledad, Maracas, St. Joseph became the Fete Capital as the FallOut Family brought another vibe-filled Carnival Experience to the party faithful. The event took place on Tuesday February 6th, putting it in direct competition with Kes Dieffenthaller’s popular Tuesday on the Rocks concert. However, the event did not seem to feel the negative effects of this as patrons still came out to enjoy a premium all inclusive experience featuring some of the country’s hottest stars providing entertainment. Here’s a peek at the action.

FUN SEEKERS UNITE One can always count on a well-mixed crowd of fun-

It also stood out thanks to a variety of tasty food choices and nonstop premium drinks. We were sure happy to be a part of the action University Inn and Conference Centre as fun seekers came out in one accord. 101 aimed to provide great ambiance, cuisine and star-studded entertainment for their swanky Carnival Saturday soiree and they did not miss. Estate 101 in Maraval came alive to the sweet strains of soca on February 10th as local and regional artistes kept the energy pumping. Rain fell intermittently and while Dwayne Bravo around there were no stoppages as he wasn’t there for cricket. Patrons partied straight until the midnight close and they would have been satisfied with the array of entertainment, food and drink on offer for the $900 price tag at the uber swanky venue. Have a look.

This event wasn’t as big as advertised. It didn’t have that much soca either. Rain and reportedly subpar backstage conditions meant several artistes did not make it to the stage. All of this led to an extremely late start for a midweek event. The headline act, Cardi B did make her appearance and performed a very short set before handing the microphone over to Machel Montano. Some patrons expressed disappointment at her short performance, while others were too zoned out and in soca mode to even care. Despite the bacchanal and the rain, there was a strong turnout and the artistes who did perform gave their all. Our photographers also gave their all to make sure they got the shots that counted.

SOCA BRAINWASH:

Soca Brainwash the event is the brainchild of Dj Private Ryan. This event attracts thousands of Soca loving patrons from around the globe. This year’s wonderland themed edition was as epic as everyone expected it to be. The Fatima college grounds became the place everyone wanted to be and those who were fortunate enough to get tickets without having to face scalpers swarmed the grounds and jammed the day away. Suffice it to say, the event was as amazing as advertised and well worth the ticket rush.

ET&T CARNIVAL 2017

Tribe promised that their 2018 premium drinks inclusive would be a movie and they rolled out the red carpet for blockbuster action at the Hasely Crawford training grounds on February 8th. It was indeed lights, cameras and action for those in attendance at Ignite and the popular fete staple showed no signs of slowing down. Good entertainment, women fuh so and liquor like rain helped to make this edition of the event a rousing success. Peep the pics.

TROPICAL LUAU

A few years ago, the EEEmpire introduced a Hawaiian-themed addition to the party landscape that turned out to be a pretty good idea. The event, which is usually held at some of the country’s most scenic locations has attracted a fine enough fan base for the promoters to take the celebration to carnival (even in a truncated season). No worries, lots of good people came out to enjoy the food inclusive cooler fiesta at Green Meadows Santa Cruz. The beautiful surroundings and equally beautiful people made for an entertaining affair filled with photo fodder.

After a successful 2017 debut, the WAD team garnered an awesome turnout for their 2018 edition of Kasava and satisfied their patrons’ thirst for a true Trinbagonian-style all-inclusive fete. Under the Trees of the Hotel Normandie in St. Ann’s was the site of this year’s edition. Multiple bars and food stations ensured that patrons received gourmet sustenance throughout the evening amidst the ‘grown and sexy’ euphoria. The Kasava menu boasted delectable Blu-food selections which included Sumptuous Creole Fish, Stew Pork, Coocoo & Callalloo, Cornmeal Dumpling with Saltfish, Sautéed Cassava, Chicken and Vegetable Rotis, Accra, Cornsoup, Fish Broth and a wide array of desert options e.g. various flavours of Fudge, Paw Paw Balls, Pone as well as Soursop, Rum Raisin & Coconut ice-cream. In addition to the excellent ambiance, a couple artistes as well as the legendary DJ Sensational Sammy delivered the very best in contemporary and old-school Soca.

Machel Montano already controls the Monday before Carnival. In fact, it takes a brave promoter to host an event on that night. For over 25 years Fantastic Friday has been reserved for Soca Monarch with a few other events occurring simultaneously. However, this year once again saw dwindling attendance at the International Soca Monarch and Revel Nation was eager to build on its instant inaugural success in 2017. The Machel Montano headlined cooler party was once again very well-attended and full of action. While it was no Machel Monday, patrons once again left satisfied and look forward to more growth in 2018. Check it out.

BEACH HOUSE The Beach House Entertainment crew merged the Trinbago Carnival experience with the theme park-styled carnival experience by hosting their popular ultra-premium event at Five Islands Amusement Park Chaguaramas. Despite the ambiance that came with the venue, the location was tastefully decorated and promoters did not chinks on the premium food and drinks. The event had its usually strong turnout (many of the attendees were foreigners) and vibes were at a premium. ET&T was there once again to cover this must- attend fete.
