t feels like just yesterday we were putting out our April Issue here at Absynthe Magazine, cramming for finals and looking out the windows of Bata, longing for summer vacation. I think regardless of whether you went home for the summer or stayed in Peterborough, crammed in summer courses or spent your days sleeping or working, it's safe to say “Where did the summer go?!” For all of you who are back for your second, third, fourth... or fifth year, I offer you a hearty Welcome Back! For the students who have just arrived for their first year I say Welcome to Trent! We may be a small community but we are certainly a great one, and regardless of how long you have been here, if you allow yourself, you'll have an incredible journey. As the year starts we are all likely to make the same promises of homework completed in advance, and doing course readings as they are assigned instead of waiting until the days before the final. Many of us, myself included, will tell ourselves that this year will be different! I challenge you to keep that promise, at least until after midterms so that it looks like you're making a solid effort. That's better than no effort at all, right? Don't be that person sitting outside your profs door perfecting the “ugly cry” because you “forgot” you had an assignment due. We all know you missed the deadline because you realized that there's a bar called Shots, and why would you spend your time doing homework when you could be making that place your version of “Cheers”? I probably lost most most of you with that reference. * sigh * . Pay attention to deadlines, get your shit done and have fun! Before you know it it'll be over. P.S. Please make sure to read the 10 Commandments of Transit. I will be one angry Editor if I have to throw elbows to get on and off the bus this year.

We are a smaller school. I cannot count the amount of times when I was a first year getting lost on campus during my first couple weeks when I thought “boy, am I ever glad I did not pick a bigger school or I would really be lost right now!. Caitlin Jones It's early September and campuses everywhere are filling up with students as Frosh Week, better know at Trent as ISW, commences. What that means is that university campuses will also be filled with the sounds of various summer anthems for the duration of that week. Undoubtedly, “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be in heavy rotation, likely accompanied by the song “Thrift Shop”. Recently there has been a lot of talk about Macklemore and whether or not the queer community should be thanking him for bringing attention to the cause. Most of the sup-

There are real problems with the appropriation, glorification, and commodification of a culture that is often criticized, devalued, and destabilized by patriarchal cultures. While this is nothing new (Elvis, I'm looking at you), that does not give Macklemore a pass, nor does it mean that his privilege should be ignored. Aside from producing music that will almost certainly become popular at weddings, and family reunions, Macklemore has been able to capitalize on a genre of music in such a way that he is developing an identity as a

many other people do: that rap is inherently homophobic (which is a misconception that is largely problematic because it's akin to the criticism that black communities in general are more ignorant, and thus more homophobic), and also that rap is not about consciousness. The problem here is that the other issues that rap artists are raising aren't important to people like Ellen DeGeneres. The assumption that there is no one else in hip hop who is trying to bring queer issues to the forefront largely overlooks the growing number of black, queer, hip hop artists who are working at the moment. September is without doubt an exciting, and busy time for most university students - moving back to the ‘Peter Patch’, navigating new classes and reuniting with old friends. Whether it’s your first year or your fourth, it’s important to take some time to actually think about the degree that you’re so diligently trying to obtain. Ideally you’ve already given this some thought prior to picking out your courses, but hey, no one is perfect. Planning your degree and paying attention to the important dates set forth by administration is vital. Remember that day planner that was given to you at the start of the year? Take a look at those pages at the front that everyone instinctively flips past. You’ll see all sorts of useful information ranging from school holidays, to course add/ drop deadlines, even fee deadline information. For those who are more electronically inclined, the online academic calendar is a treasure trove of information. Why might this be handy knowledge you ask? Let’s say it’s the fourth week of classes and as you sit in your first year Physics class listening to the Prof. talk about … well… whatever it is that Physics Profs talk about, and you think to yourself “this is SO not where I want to be right

now. I want to be dissecting things!” So you make an appointment with your College Senior Tutor for an academic advising session. You wait patiently for the opportunity to tell them that you have had the light bulb over the head moment, a realization of epic proportions. You have finally figured out what your true calling is, and now that you know, why should you spend another minute in courses that will “do nothing” for you. You sit down, a mixture of nerves and excitement at the prospect of verbalizing your plans for when you’re “a grown up”, and that’s when you hear it. Your excitement turns into a ball of broken dreams in your stomach. You have missed the deadline to drop your course without academic penalty. You missed the deadline to register for the course you need to make your dreams come true. Your Senior Tutor is apologetic and tells you that you can make changes to your winter semester schedule but that unfortunately you must complete the course you are in now in order to avoid a penalty. They also inform you that the entrance scholarship you have received is dependent on you taking a full course load, even more reasons why you must keep your dreaded current course. You leave the office, head low while the world plays you a sad song and think to yourself “if only I had known, I could have done this sooner...” “Don’t be that person who starts planning for their future only to realize that they’re a credit or two short.” Lesson learned? This issue of Absynthe was distributed the first week of classes, so take some time, and make some plans. Take a look at the program you are in, assess the courses that you’ll be taking in upper years, and the pre-requisites for those courses. Mapping out your degree required courses and your electives will help you to get a feel for whether or not you are in fact in the right program. Know when the last date is to drop and add courses, know any stipulations that might be in effect for scholarships, and think about whether or not you’re enjoying the route you’re taking. Take advantage of the resources that are available to you. You have Senior Tutors, Professors, and the Academic Skills Centre. All of which are tools that you can use when figuring out what route is best for you. By planning and being actively aware of where you are academically, it will save you a lot of stress and frustration in later years. If you’re in upper years, start verifying that you have (or will have) all of your degree requirements so that you are ready when it comes time to apply to graduate. Don’t be that person who starts planning for their future only to realize that they’re a credit or two short. For more information on academic advising contact your College office. For more information on important dates refer to your student handbook, or trentu.ca/calendar. ■

If you have seen a UNICEF

logo around the Trent campus, then you have discovered UNICEF Trent. The UNICEF Campus initiative affords students the opportunity to promote UNICEF Canada and issues related to children both here in Canada and overseas on the Peterborough Campus. While fundraising, UNICEF Trent takes pride in notifying volunteers and the public that 100% of donations are sent to UNICEF Canada where it is distributed to the necessary areas. These areas include clean water, protection, and education for impoverished children around the world. Other areas are emergency relief efforts and HIV. UNICEF Trent’s mission, for each academic year, is to take on a different issue every month. In the previous school year UNICEF Trent held numerous events which raised funds and awareness about children is-

sues. For example, an event that generated the most funds for UNICEF Trent was Prof-in-the Box. This event raises awareness and funds for children education and gender equality around the world. Another popular event is UNICEF Trent’s raffle which fundraises for children advocacy rights, which focuses on the social and economic policy issues which have a critical impact on children. The most extravagant prize raffled is two-round trip tickets to anywhere where WestJet Airline flies. This raffle is an annual event usually done in the winter term, so look out for your chance to win airline tickets while making a small difference for children around the world. Furthermore this upcoming year the Trent community and even volunteers can expect few changes in fundraising events from UNICEF Trent! We aim to increase our visibility on

campus and advertise the club a lot more. The plan is to increase awareness activities, so the Trent community can truly understand issues that children face around the world. We want the public to know that UNICEF Trent does not only sit at a table and collect funds, but also distribute knowledge! Therefore we encourage you to take a closer look at what UNICEF Trent is all about and we hope that you find yourself even more interested to join the cause! UNICEF Trent can simply be added to one’s co-curricular record by completing a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer service with the club. If you would like to inquire more about UNICEF Trent, add us on Facebook (UNICEF Trent) or follow us on Twitter (UNICEFtrentu). Also, you can email us at uniceftrent@gmail.com.■

Our theme for ISW this year is Jurassic LEC. Think Jurassic Park, a wonderland of dinosaurs and an unforgettable experience! Hello everyone! My name is Sean McInnis, I'm from Aurora, Ontario and I’m one of Lady Eaton College’s Co-Chairs for ISW 2013. I'm going into my fourth year in the History program at Trent and I cannot wait for ISW this year. I look forward to working with all the amazing staff that are going to make this week unforgettable, and seeing all the new students who are going to make Trent their new home. I was on ISW staff the past two years and I was nervous but excited to take on this new role. I think ISW is important because it gives students from all walks of life a chance to connect with their peers and have some fun before the craziness of first-year starts. We’ve had a lot of responsibilities to juggle with this role, but we wouldn’t change it for anything!

Hello to the Trent community. My name is Mayra Asmar and my hometown is Marysville, Ontario. This will be my fourth year at Trent. I recently finished my Biology-Psychology joint major and I’m now entering my first year in the Compressed Nursing Program. I’m an emergency responder on the Trent University Emergency First Response Team (TUEFRT). ISW was a great experience, not only in first year, but also in second and third year as a staff member. This year, taking on more responsibility as a co-chair has been a great experience! My fellow co-chairs and I have dedicated many hours to ISW to ensure that all students have a great and memorable experience. I hope that all students recognize and appreciate our beautiful campus and become involved with their respective colleges.

My name is Rachel Artuso, from Guelph, ON. and I am going into my fourth year of the Indigenous Environmental Studies program. I am one of three Lady Eaton College Co-Chairs for this year's ISW and am extremely excited for this upcoming year! Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to be an ISW staff member. It's so exciting to see new students coming into Trent ready to start their university careers. I remember being a new student and how at home I felt because of the ISW staff members. Now this upcoming year, my fellow co-chairs and I are taking on a much larger role which has needed a lot of hard work and dedication but we know it will be worth it in the end! We are extremely excited for all new students to begin their journey at Trent and we hope you are too!
