Introduction The war continues in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and particularly in the two SURYLQFHV RI .LYX $QG ZRPHQ DUH WKH oUVW YLFWLPV Trade unions have a part to play and the FGTB is no exception. $V VRFLDO LQHTXDOLWLHV DQG WKH XQHYHQ GLVWULEXWLRQ RI ZHDOWK DUH WKH PDLQ FDXVHV RI FRQpLFW the trade unions play an essential part when it comes to preventing these causes and keeping the peace. These inequalities are often a source of violence, especially against women. ,W LV XQLYHUVDOO\ UHFRJQLVHG WKDW HTXDO SDUWLFLSDWLRQ RI ZRPHQ DQG PHQ LQ DOO oHOGV q economic, social and political – is a vital condition for peace and democracy. For the FGTB, the combating of gender inequalities in the labour market and society has always been a priority and a fundamental value, which has to be defended at international level.

Together with our partners in the South, we carry on a wide range of positive trade union solidarity initiatives aimed at combating violence in society and particularly against women.

The approach adopted in this brochure is two-­fold. It challenges gender inequalities and highlights the international work of the FGTB. Defending the FGTB’s trade union values -­ of equality, solidarity, social justice, and democracy -­ involves taking action at international level and concrete development cooperation projects. By taking initiatives aimed at raising DZDUHQHVV DQG E\ JLYLQJ VSHFLoF DLG PHDVXUHV IRU WUDGH XQLRQV LQ WKH VRXWKHUQ KHPLVSKHUH the FGTB tries to develop a strong trade union counter power at international level and put a stop to this violence.

We have chosen to display a series of pictures in this brochure of women carrying heavy loads. These loads, which differ from one society to another, symbolise the various degrees of discrimination, to which women are subjected, wherever they live.

Violence against women is not only the case of the DRC and not only a women’s issue.

In the conclusion, you will read why also in Belgium we must continue the struggle for more gender equality and why, in the end, everyone will take advantage of it!

Parce que les inÊgalitÊs sociales et la mauvaise rÊpartition des richesses sont les principales FDXVHV GH FRQpLW OHV V\QGLFDWV VRQW GHV DFWHXUV LQFRQWRXUQDEOHV SRXU OHV SU¸YHQLU HW maintenir la paix. D’autant plus que les situations d’inÊgalitÊs sont souvent sources de violence contre les femmes.

Il est d’ailleurs unanimement reconnu que la participation Êgale des femmes et des hommes dans tous les domaines, Êconomique, social et politique, est une condition indispensable à la paix et à la dÊmocratie. Pour la FGTB, la lutte contre les inÊgalitÊs femmes-­hommes sur le marchÊ du travail et dans la sociÊtÊ a toujours ÊtÊ une prioritÊ et une valeur de base dÊfendue au niveau international.

Ensemble avec nos partenaires du Sud, nous menons de nombreuses actions positives de solidaritÊ syndicale pour lutter contre les violences dans la sociÊtÊ et tout particulièrement celles à l’encontre des femmes.

L’approche de cette brochure est double : questionner les inÊgalitÊs femmes-­hommes et mettre en lumière l’action internationale de la FGTB. Inleiding In de Democratische Republiek Congo (DRC) en meer bepaald in de twee provincies van Kivu, blijft de oorlog aanslepen. Vrouwen zijn de eerste slachtoffers.

De vakbonden hebben een belangrijke rol en het ABVV blijft niet afzijdig.

'H YDNERQGHQ ]LMQ RQRQWEHHUOLMNH SDUWQHUV ELM KHW YRRUNRPHQ YDQ FRQpLFWHQ HQ KHW EHZDUHQ van de vrede. De sociale ongelijkheid en de onrechtvaardige verdeling van de rijkdom liggen LPPHUV DDQ GH EDVLV YDQ KHW FRQpLFW (Q GLH RQJHOLMNKHLG LV HHQ EURQ YDQ JHZHOG YDDN gericht op vrouwen.

Het is intussen algemeen erkend dat de gelijke behandeling van vrouwen en mannen op alle vlakken, economisch, politiek en sociaal, een noodzakelijke voorwaarde is voor vrede en democratie. Voor het ABVV is de strijd tegen de ongelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen op de arbeidsmarkt, in de samenleving en op het thuisfront een prioriteit en een basisvoorwaarde die op internationaal vlak verdedigd wordt.

Samen met onze partners in het Zuiden voeren we tal van positieve solidariteitsacties om het geweld in de samenleving en vooral het geweld tegen vrouwen te bestrijden.

De brochure belicht zowel onze strijd voor meer gelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen als onze internationale werking. Via onze internationale actie en door middel van concrete samenwerkingsprojecten komen we op voor de waarden van het ABVV: gelijkheid, solidariteit, sociale rechtvaardigheid en democratie. In het kader van deze samenwerkingsprojecten ]HWWHQ ZH EHZXVWPDNLQJVFDPSDJQHV RS HQ JHYHQ ZH VSHFLoHNH VWHXQ DDQ GH YDNERQGHQ uit het Zuiden. Op die manier kunnen we een sterke internationale syndicale tegenmacht opbouwen en een einde stellen aan het geweld.

We illustreren deze brochure met een reeks foto’s van vrouwen die zware lasten dragen.

Deze lasten, die verschillen van samenleving tot samenleving, staan symbool voor de diverse vormen van discriminatie waarvan vrouwen het slachtoffer zijn, waar ze ook wonen.

Geweld ten aanzien van vrouwen is geen louter Congolese aangelegenheid, en niet alleen een ‘vrouwenzaak’. In het nawoord lees je waarom we ook in BelgiĂŤ onze strijd voor meer gelijkheid moeten voortzetten, en waarom iedereen hier baat bij heeft!

“Heavy loads�: a tribute to the load carrying women of Kivu

In order to take their products to market, the “load carrying� women often cover 50 km on foot, carrying bags weighing 40 kg or more on their heads or backs. In South Kivu, this task is set aside for women. It is a matter of “tradition, custom and culture�.

On the roads of Bukavu, Eliane Beeson and François Vaxelaire, two Belgian photographers, met and were able to capture fabulous portraits of these extraordinary women. These portraits are used for the Tugawe (“Let’s shareâ€?) awareness raising campaign focusing on male-­female equality, which is led by the Observatory for Gender Parity in the DRC*.

Exhibiting these female portraits makes it possible to “forcefully illustrate the question of labour, which is very unevenly distributed between women and menâ€? explains EspĂŠrance Mawanzo, female president of the Observatory. “The exhibition aims to stimulate discussion concerning stereotypes and get people thinking about gender-­based inequalities** -­ from Bukavu to Brussels!â€? )RU PRUH LQIRUPDWLRQ RQ WKH 2EVHUYDWRU\ VHH WKH VHFWLRQ k+RZ WR oQG RXW PRUHy S **Gender refers to the social and cultural behavior and role expectations towards men and women. It is, unlike sex (biological difference between women and men) not innate but variable over time and from culture to culture. Women are, for example, biologically predestined to bear children but socially not predestined to take care of them.

“Lourds fardeauxâ€?: Pour se rendre au marchĂŠ vendre leurs produits, les femmes hommage aux femmes “transporteusesâ€? parcourent souvent 50 km Ă pied, portant sur transporteuses la tĂŞte ou le dos des sacs de 40 kg et plus. Au Sud-­Kivu, cette du Kivu tâche est rĂŠservĂŠe aux femmes. C’est “la tradition, la coutume, la cultureâ€?.

Sur les routes de Bukavu, Eliane Beeson et François Vaxelaire, deux photographes belges, ont rencontrĂŠ ces femmes extraordinaires et ont tirĂŠ d’elles de fabuleux portraits. “Zware lasten�: eerbetoon aan de vrouwen van Kivu

Om hun producten op de markt te gaan verkopen, leggen deze vrouwen vaak tot 50 kilometer te voet af, waarbij ze zakken van 40 kg of meer op het hoofd of de rug dragen. In Zuid-­Kivu doen enkel vrouwen dit werk. Het is “de traditie, de gewoonte, de cultuur�.

Op de wegen in Bukavu kwamen Eliane Beeson en François Vaxelaire, twee Belgische fotografen, deze uitzonderlijke vrouwen tegen en maakten van hen prachtige portretten.

Deze foto’s worden gebruikt voor de bewustmakingscampagne Tugawe (“Laten we delen�) over de gelijkheid vrouw-­man van het Observatorium voor de Gelijkheid V/M in de DRC*.

Door deze portretten van vrouwen te tonen, kan “het probleem van de zeer ongelijke arbeidsverdeling tussen mannen en vrouwen aan de kaak gesteld wordenâ€?, zegt EspĂŠrance Mawanzo, voorzitster van het Observatorium. “Met deze tentoonstelling willen wij een debat op gang brengen over V/M clichĂŠs en de mensen doen nadenken over gendergebonden ongelijkheden**... van Bukavu tot Brussel!â€? * Meer info over het Observatorium, in de rubriek ‘Meer weten’, p. 34. **Gender verwijst naar de sociale en culturele verwachtingen en rolpatronen voor mannen en vrouwen. Het is, in tegenstelling tot geslacht (biologisch verschil tussen vrouwen en mannen), niet aangeboren maar veranderlijk doorheen de tijd en van cultuur tot cultuur. Vrouwen zijn bijv. biologisch voorbestemd om kinderen te baren maar niet om de zorg op zich te nemen.

The FGTB invests in the World March of Women

The question of gender equality is one of the key focuses of the FGTB’s international policy.

We developed different kind of initiatives in this area, particularly in the DRC and also in the Balkans.

In October 2010, the World March of Women saw 15,000 women travel to South Kivu from the four corners of the world marked an important stage in this struggle. It was attended by a major FGTB trade union delegation. We have worked with African trade XQLRQLVWV RI ERWK JHQGHUV LQ RUGHU WR GHoQH KRZ WKH\ FDQ IXOoO WKHLU UROH DV SURPRWHUV of peace.

In addition, around 30 trade union women from 12 African countries came together in RUGHU WR GLVFXVV YLROHQFH LQpLFWHG RQ ZRPHQ 7KH\ DOVR WDONHG DERXW WKH EUDYH VWHSV that they have taken to combat this violence and help the victims.

La question de l’ÊgalitÊ entre les hommes et les femmes est un des axes de la politique internationale de la FGTB.

La FGTB investit la Marche Mondiale des Femmes

Elle s’est d’ailleurs souvent mobilisÊe à ce sujet, tout particulièrement en RDC mais aussi dans les Balkans.

La Marche Mondiale des Femmes, qui a rĂŠuni en octobre 2010 au Sud Kivu 15 000 femmes des quatre coins du monde, marque une ĂŠtape importante de ce combat.

Une forte dÊlÊgation de syndicalistes FGTB y Êtait. Nous avons travaillÊ avec les IHPPHV HW OHV KRPPHV V\QGLFDOLVWHV DIULFDLQV DoQ GH G¸oQLU OHV PR\HQV GH UHPSOLU au mieux leur rôle de promoteurs de paix.

De plus, près de 30 femmes syndicalistes de 12 pays africains se sont rÊunies et RQW W¸PRLJQ¸ GHV YLROHQFHV LQpLJ¸HV DX[ IHPPHV PDLV VXUWRXW GH OHXUV DFWLRQV courageuses pour les combattre et pour aider celles qui en sont victimes.

Het ABVV stapt mee in de Wereldvrouwenmars

Gelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen is ĂŠĂŠn van de krachtlijnen van de internationale politiek van het ABVV. We ontwikkelden tal van acties, in het bijzonder in de DRC, maar ook in de Balkanlanden.

De Wereldvrouwenmars, die in oktober 2010 meer dan 15.000 vrouwen uit heel de wereld samenbracht in Zuid-­Kivu, vormde een belangrijke stap. Het ABVV stapte mee in de mars en betuigde zo zijn solidariteit met de Congolese vrouwen. Nog belangrijker is dat we met Afrikaanse syndicalisten, vrouwen en mannen, mee nagedacht hebben over hoe ze als lokale vakbonden hun taak als voorvechters van de vrede kunnen waarmaken.

Een 30-­tal vrouwelijke syndicalisten uit 12 Afrikaanse landen getuigden over het geweld tegen vrouwen, hun moedige strijd tegen dat geweld en de hulp die ze bieden aan de slachtoffers.

Within the framework of its international cooperation projects, the FGTB contributes to the reinforcement of initiatives implemented by its trade union partners in the South.

The objective, for our partners, is to analyse more effectively the impacts of trade union activities and (trade union, political, economic) decisions on relationships between women and men.

It is therefore a matter of changing the image of women and men in society and reinforcing the legitimacy of women within their own trade union structures. ,Q WKH oHOG WKH )*7% VXSSRUWV LWV SDUWQHUV E\ PHDQV RI WUDLQLQJ F\FOHV DQG E\ FUHDWLQJ D database. This is in addition to awareness raising campaigns aimed at ensuring that the balanced representation of women and men and the gender question are taken into account at all levels of social dialogue, as an essential factor for decent work.

Dans le cadre de ses projets de coopÊration internationale, la FGTB participe au renforcement des moyens d’action de ses partenaires syndicaux du Sud.

La FGTB soutient des projets syndicaux au Sud pour plus d’ÊgalitÊ femmes-­hommes

L’objectif, pour nos partenaires, est de mieux analyser les impacts d’une part des activitÊs syndicales et d’autre part des dÊcisions (syndicales, politiques, Êconomiques) sur les rapports entre les hommes et les femmes.

Il s’agit ainsi de changer l’image des femmes et des hommes dans la sociÊtÊ et de renforcer la lÊgitimitÊ des femmes au sein de leurs propres structures syndicales.

Sur le terrain, la FGTB appuie ses partenaires via des cycles de formations, la crĂŠation de base de donnĂŠes, des campagnes de sensibilisation pour que la reprĂŠsentation ĂŠquilibrĂŠe des femmes et des hommes et la question du genre soient prises en compte Ă tous les niveaux du dialogue social comme ĂŠlĂŠment incontournable du travail dĂŠcent.

Het ABVV steunt vakbondsprojecten in het Zuiden voor meer gelijkheid V/M

In het kader van zijn internationale samenwerkingsprojecten versterkt het ABVV de actiemiddelen van zijn partners in het Zuiden.

Deze partners trachten de impact in te schatten van de syndicale werking en van syndicale, politieke en economische beslissingen op de verhouding tussen mannen en vrouwen.

De bedoeling is het beeld van de vrouw en de man in de samenleving te veranderen en de gerechtvaardigde plaats van de vrouw in de eigen vakbondsstructuren te verstevigen.

Op het terrein zelf steunt het ABVV zijn partners via vormingen, het aanmaken van een database en bewustmakingscampagnes, opdat er rekening zou gehouden worden met een evenwichtige vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen en mannen en met de genderproblematiek, op alle niveaus van het sociaal overleg, als onlosmakelijk onderdeel van waardig werk.

The FGTB at the World Social Forum

In February 2011, the 9th World Social Forum was held in Dakar, Senegal.

The FGTB was in attendance and truly made its mark -­ at the opening demonstration, the delegation marched with life-­size photos of the load carrying women of Bukavu.

In partnership with the Observatory for Congolese Gender Parity, the FGTB then organised the “Heavy Loads� exhibition on the University of Dakar campus and stimulated lively debates with male and female students concerning the trade union initiative aimed at gender equality.

Finally, the FGTB organised a workshop “Trade unions say no to violence against women during FRQpLFWV DQG LQ WKH ZRUNSODFHy ZKLFK SURYLGHG DQ RSSRUWXQLW\ WR VKDUH SRLQWV RI YLHZ ZLWK %HOJLDQ Congolese, Senegalese and South African trade union members. This event proved a real success: almost 150 people – most of whom were young students – squeezed into the small tent to hear about the role of trade unions in this struggle for gender equality and suggest concrete courses of action.

Het ABVV was er aanwezig en onze delegatie droeg bij de openingsmanifestatie levensgrote foto’s mee van de lastendragende vrouwen van Bukavu.

Daarna organiseerde het ABVV in samenwerking met het Observatorium voor de Gelijkheid V/M de tentoonstelling “Zware lastenâ€? op de universiteitscampus van Dakar. Op die manier kwam er met de studenten een levendig debat op gang over de syndicale benadering van de gelijkheid V/M. Tot slot organiseerde het ABVV ook een workshop: â€?De vakbonden zeggen neen tegen het geweld RS YURXZHQ ELM FRQpLFWHQ HQ RS GH ZHUNYORHUy 'DW ZDV G¸ NDQV RP GH VWDQGSXQWHQ YDQ GH %HOJLVFKH Congolese, Senegalese en Zuid-­Afrikaanse vakbonden met elkaar te confronteren. De workshop was een onverhoopt succes: zo’n 150 personen – waaronder een meerderheid jonge studenten – verdrongen zich onder de kleine tent om te discussiĂŤren over de rol van de vakbonden in de strijd voor gelijkheid V/M en om concrete actievoorstellen te formuleren.

Daniel Van Daele, SecrĂŠtaire fĂŠdĂŠral, FGTB “La guerre n’apporte jamais la paix... Dans la rĂŠgion du Kivu, 6 millions de personnes ont trouvĂŠ la mort dans une guerre qui sĂŠvit depuis plus de 20 ans.

Les femmes et les enfants sont les premières victimes. Ces femmes, on les appelle aussi les femmes-­camions: elles transportent des yuccas, des oignons et d’autres lÊgumes et les acheminent au marchÊ en Êchange d’une aumône.

Certaines femmes se font avorter après avoir ÊtÊ violÊes par des militaires ou par des rebelles. Souvent leur dos cède et elles n’arrivent plus à porter de charges.

Leurs conditions de vie se dÊtÊriorent encore un peu plus‌ Nous avons colonisÊ le Congo et nous avons un devoir de rÊparation envers les Congolais. Il faut rÊagir contre le nÊo-­colonialisme, le nÊo-­libÊralisme. Et Êgalement dans notre propre pays.�

“Nooit brengt oorlog vrede... In de streek van Kivu woedt al meer dan 20 jaar een oorlog die het leven kostte aan meer dan 6 miljoen mensen. Vrouwen en kinderen zijn de eerste slachtoffers. Deze vrouwen worden ook “levende vrachtwagens� genoemd.

Zij verslepen de yuka’s, de ajuinen en andere groenten naar de markt en krijgen daar een kleine vergoeding voor. Sommige vrouwen plegen abortus wanneer ze door militairen of rebellen verkracht zijn. Vaak begeeft hun rug het en kunnen ze geen lasten meer dragen. Zo wordt hun leven nog slechter. Wij koloniseerden Congo en moeten iets herstellen. Iets doen tegen het neokolonialisme, het neoliberalisme. Ook in eigen land.�

Congolese trade unions for gender equality

“Congolese women are attacked and mutilated, dehumanised and raped by armed groups and bandits from all sides who transform them into sexual beasts of burden. They no longer have a face, a life, a soul or a smile. The Congolese trade unions have a role to play in response to this curse� says Isabelle Kapinga, vice-­president responsible for Gender and Youth, of the Democratic Confederation of Labour.

For this reason, the major Congolese trade union confederations (National Union of Congolese Workers, Democratic Confederation of Labour, Congolese Trade Union Confederation and Trade Union Council of Public and Private Services) have worked together to place initiatives at the heart of their policy, which focus on solidarity and raising awareness of this extreme violence against women in regions affected by war. They lead campaigns in companies and initiatives aimed at promoting international labour standards concerning women’s rights. These organisations also work with local and expert international NGO’s to take care of women who have been victims of rape.

Ainsi, les principales confÊdÊrations syndicales congolaises (Union Nationale des Travailleurs du Congo, ConfÊdÊration DÊmocratique du Travail, ConfÊdÊration Syndicale du Congo et Conseil Syndical des Services Publics et PrivÊs) ont, ensemble, mis au cœur de leur politique des actions de solidaritÊ et de sensibilisation autour de ces violences extrêmes envers les femmes qui frappent les rÊgions du pays en guerre. Ils mènent des campagnes dans les entreprises et des actions de vulgarisation des normes internationales du travail relatives au droit des femmes. Ces organisations collaborent Êgalement avec des ONG locales et internationales expertes pour la prise en charge des femmes victimes de viol.

De Congolese vakbonden voor gelijkheid V/M

“Congolese vrouwen worden verkracht, ze worden geviseerd door gewapende bendes, door bandieten van allerlei slag die van vrouwen lastdieren maken, objecten om hun dierlijke lusten op bot te vieren.

Vrouwen zonder gelaat, zonder leven, zonder ziel, zonder glimlach. Ook de Congolese vakbonden moeten hier een rol spelen en tegen deze gesel opkomen�, zegt Isabelle Kapinga, ondervoorzitster van de ConfÊdÊration DÊmocratique du Travail en verantwoordelijk voor Gender en Jongeren.

Samen voeren de belangrijkste Congolese vakbonden (Union Nationale des Travailleurs du Congo, ConfÊdÊration DÊmocratique du Travail, ConfÊdÊration Syndicale du Congo en de Conseil Syndical des services publics et privÊs) solidariteits-­ en bewustmakingsacties tegen extreem geweld op vrouwen in oorlogsregio’s. Dit thema heeft een centrale plaats in hun beleid. Er worden campagnes in bedrijven opgestart en acties gevoerd om de internationale arbeidsnormen m.b.t. vrouwenrechten bekend te maken. Ze werken hierbij samen met plaatselijke en internationale ngo’s die ervaring hebben met het opvangen van vrouwen die het slachtoffer werden van verkrachting.

The trade unions in the South are mobilizing to achieve gender equality

For Louise Plaatjes, president of the World Women’s Committee of UNI Africa (regional organisation of the Global Union for skills and services), there cannot be 36 different solutions: “We need to transform 16 days of trade union activism* against violence to women into 365 days of non-­violence! And transform words into actions!! All of us, ZRPHQ DQG PHQ DOVR QHHG WR oJKW WKLV YLROHQFH WRJHWKHU 9LROHQFH against women has spread to the workplace. This violence starts with subtle gestures and culminates in the worst forms of abuse. Although policies exist for health and safety in the workplace, this violence still takes place there�. * “Decent Work, Decent Life for Women� campaign launched by the ITUC in 2009 and 16 days of action against gender violence.

Bien que des politiques en matière de santĂŠ et sĂŠcuritĂŠ sur le lieu de travail existent, cette violence s’y cristallise malgrĂŠ toutâ€?. * Campagne de la CSI lancĂŠe en 2009, “Un Travail DĂŠcent, une Vie DĂŠcente pour les Femmesâ€? et 16 jours d’action contre les violences de genre.

In het begin is het bijna onmerkbaar, maar het mondt uit in de ergste vormen van mishandeling. What are the international organisations doing?

International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) “Combating the violence that denies women their fundamental human rights, and the structural gender imbalances reinforcing it, is a priority for the trade union movement�, Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary.

In response to the violence suffered by women in society and the workplace, the international trade union movement has been actively engaged. The ITUC has published a declaration and plan of action, to which the FGTB has actively contributed, RQ k:RPHQ 7UDGH 8QLRQLVWV DW WKH &HQWUH RI &RQpLFW 3UHYHQWLRQ 0DQDJHPHQW DQG Resolution�*. Equality is a question of social justice, but it is also a necessary condition for the development of a sustainable economy. Voor de IAO is waardig werk een stap in dit proces. De gelijkheid V/M moet in de 4 doelstellingen van de IAO voor waardig werk (namelijk werkgelegenheid, sociale bescherming, sociale rechten en sociale dialoog) weerspiegeld worden. * De IAO is een tripartiete organisatie samengesteld uit vakbonden, regeringen en werkgevers.

What about our country, Belgium...

Violence against women (and men) is not only an issue in the Congo. Nor is it just a matter of concern for women.

In Belgium last year, 14% of women and 10% of men aged 18 -­ 34 were victims of domestic violence*.

If we consider the 18 -­ 24 age category, the percentage of female victims actually rises to 22% (source: BIGE – Belgian Institute for Gender Equality).

Studies show that the most egalitarian societies – both in general and gender terms – are the least violent and most prosperous from the economic point of view. Involving men in “caring� activities in the world of work and the private domain, while improving the position of women on the labour PDUNHW EHQHoWV ERWK WKH HFRQRP\ DQG VRFLHW\ DV D ZKROH Nor are women and men equal in various domains in Belgium, despite the existence of a legislative framework. Years of trade union activism aimed at achieving greater equality both on the job market and in private life have indeed borne fruit. But gender equality remains a challenge. This is shown E\ WKH IROORZLQJ oJXUHV 1. Ceci explique pourquoi nous continuons inlassablement notre lutte pour davantage d’ÊgalitÊ femmes-­hommes dans la vie professionnelle et dans la vie privÊe, en Belgique, et ailleurs avec nos partenaires du Sud. Plus de bien-­être, moins de violence‌ tout le monde y gagne!

In eigen boezem kijken...

In BelgiĂŤ werd 14% van de vrouwen en 10% van de mannen tussen 18 en 34 jaar het voorbije jaar slachtoffer van partnergeweld*. Als we kijken naar de groep van 18 tot 24 jaar, dan loopt het cijfer voor vrouwen zelfs op tot 22% (bron: Instituut voor gelijkheid van vrouwen en mannen).

Mannen betrekken bij zorgactiviteiten (zowel op de arbeidsmarkt als in de privĂŠsfeer), en de positie van de vrouwen op de arbeidsmarkt verbeteren, loont zowel economisch als maatschappelijk.

Ook in BelgiÍ zijn er, ondanks goede wetgeving, nog steeds domeinen waar de gelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen niet bereikt werd. Jaren van vakbondsstrijd voor meer gelijkheid op het thuisfront en op de arbeidsmarkt hebben zeker vooruitgang opgeleverd. Maar de gelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen realiseren blijft een uitdaging. Enkele cijfers ter illustratie: 1. In de maatschappij: v YURXZHQ WXVVHQ HQ MDDU EHVWHGHQ RS ZHHNEDVLV JHPLGGHOG XXU PHHU WLMG GDQ mannen aan huishoudelijke taken, en ongeveer 2 uur meer dan mannen aan de kinderen;͞ v YDQ GH YDGHUV QHHPW ]LMQ YDGHUVFKDSVYHUORI QLHW RS 2. Dat is dan ook de reden waarom we onze strijd voor meer gelijkheid tussen vrouwen en mannen op de arbeidsmarkt en op het thuisfront onverminderd voortzetten, in BelgiĂŤ en bij onze partners in het Zuiden. Want iedereen heeft uiteindelijk baat bij meer welvaart en minder geweld!
