The Intern Should Be Hired As Your Next Movie By Art Byrd Late August, I was watching movie trailers in the movie theater. The trailer for the movie, The Intern starring Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro came on. The trailer was so heartwarming and funny. I had a great feeling about the movie and couldn’t wait to see it. My feeling was right. The Intern is a wonderful fall movie. The movie is written and directed by Nancy Meyers whose past movies have included It’s Complicated (2009), Something Gotta Give (2003) and a favorite of mine, The Holiday (2006). With Meyers, the team up of Hathaway and DeNiro and a great supporting cast, The Intern makes you laugh and tugs at your heart. I saw the movie on a Saturday afternoon with an older crowd. They seem to have a great time. A younger audience will have good time, too. The storyline is very simple. Jules Ostin played by Anne Hathaway is the founder and CEO of “About The Fit”, a fashion based e-commerce company. The company decides to have an outreach program where seniors over 50 are able to become interns. Ben Whittaker played by Robert DeNiro is a retired widower who has tried everything from Tai Chi classes to extensive travel. He feels that something is missing. Ben sees a flyer about the intern outreach program and applies. Ben is hired and assigned to Jules. Jules is extremely driven and her company is only 18 months old. Her investors believe that she needs a CEO to run the company while she handles the creative part of the company.
She doesn’t want to turn over the control of her company, but she is overwhelmed. On the home-front, Jules has a stay at husband and an adorable young daughter. There are many great and well-written scenes between Jules and Ben as their relationship goes from working to friendship. A great supporting cast kicks a movie from good to awesome. The Intern supporting cast ranging from Christina Scherer as Jules’ overworked assistant, Becky to co-worker, Jason played Adam DeVine who has been seen in the Pitch Perfect movies and TV’s Modern Family. The one supporting cast member I enjoyed the most was Fiona, the company masseur played by the ever sexy Rene Russo. She and Ben flirt with each other. Their first date involving a funeral is a great example of Meyers’ great writing. If you are looking for a heartfelt and well-told story then, you should hire The Intern as your next movie choice.
