WELCOME — "CHANGING LIVES — BUILDING COMMUNITY, ONE CAMP AT A TIME" On behalf of the ACA Southeastern Planning Committee welcome to Savannah, GA! The city’s cobblestone streets, quaint historical houses and southern charm will be the perfect backdrop to our conference. We hope that you will enjoy what we have lined up for you. We worked hard to carry our theme throughout all areas of our conference this year. Community is so important in what we do every day. We can only hope you understand more of how each one of us is connected through our communities and how these connections are touching the lives we serve. Now, let’s jump right into it and talk conference highlights! • We don’t have one, but two amazing keynote speakers lined up for you. Lori Hoffner has been offering training for positive youth development, community networking and relationship building since 1997 and has spoken nationally regarding youth development, employment and staff engagement as well as multiple community issues. Dr. Gwynn Powell, Ph.D, is part of the Park, Recreation, Tourism Management faculty at Clemson University. She has been an active volunteer with ACA at the local and national level with two decades of experience with day and residential camp, as well as recent experience with camps in Russia, South Africa and Turkey. • The word on the streets is that Tuesday Night Live (aka-TNL) is off the chain! Don’t know what it’s about? Here’s a sneak preview….Live Auction. Entertainment. Drinks. Food. Fun. A view of Savannah like no other. Need we say more? • You must stop by the Exhibit Hall. Vendors from all over are coming to show you their new and exciting materials. Food, drinks and entertainment will be provided to any attendees visiting the hall. • Never been to Savannah? Come join us on a historical tour which is included in the preconference activities. • Our educational sessions this year are top notch. Get ready to be awed. As you can see we have plenty of things planned for you over the next three days. Thanks for joining us and for your participation in the ACA, Southeastern Regional Conference! The Johnny Appleseed’s of our Time We all plant seeds: seeds of creativity, inspiration, leadership and support. Sometimes we receive the perfect conditions for our seeds to grow, other times there is just too much fertilizer, and things burn up. Whether or not we get to stick around and enjoy the ‘fruit’ of our labor or move on to sow seeds elsewhere, it’s important that our work is recognized. Join Lori in this humorous and insightful approach as we look at the reasons we “do what we do.”

New Ways to Think About the Camp Community; a Journey Through Camp and It’s Power For many, camp is a place of fun and recreation that leads to powerful personal outcomes of leadership, friendship skills, and more. In many parts of the world, camp seeks to directly impact serious challenges facing society such as corruption, HIV, poverty, hunger, and inferior education for girls. The idea that camp provides an intentional community to empower and combat societal ills is not new, but entrepreneurial models of camp from around the world can spark new ideas. In Nigeria, corruption and hunger are attacked with a camp that has a working farm as its financial base with job skills and food as additional outcomes. In Russia, camp happens every day of the year through partnerships with schools. In South Africa, the focus is on HIV prevention and in the Middle East, English language instruction. These programs tackle serious societal issues through youth programming. Join a journey to these camps through photos and narrative as we pose questions to prompt thinking about partnerships that might expand our reach within our own community.

Standards Courses General Training Requirements for Camps Seeking Accreditation It is the expectation that one or more individuals associated with each accredited camp (or a camp working toward accreditation) will attend a standards course. The individual completing the standards course for the camp must be actively involved with the preparation of materials, on site during a significant amount of the camp season, and on site and available the day of the visit. It is also expected that an individual with current standards training be actively involved with the camp and on site during non-visit years. Which Training Should I Attend?
Full Standards Course: If the individual is BRAND NEW to the accreditation process (whether the camp is going through the process for the first time or is already currently accredited camp.) Monday, September 22, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Lunch Provided. Standards Update Course: If the individual has been actively involved with the accreditation process in the past three years. 1+1=3(?): Building a Highly Effective Team Josh Sweat, Camp Twin Lakes at Will-A-Way Ever had a not so highly performing team? What does it take to get there? How do you create a culture of going above the call of duty (or as we say “giving every camper all we have”)? After one not so stellar summer, we asked ourselves these questions. Come explore with us and hear stories of how we and others have built highly functioning teams from recruitment to training and beyond.
Is this the year that YOU become more involved in the Accreditation Program? Learn more about the entire process by attending a Standards Course! Train to become an Accreditation Visitor! www.ACAcamps.org/southeastern/events Find a training near you today!

8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Spirit of Culture Sapelo Room Lori Hoffner, Supporting Community
Since 1965 the ethnic composition of the country has changed more rapidly than any other time in history. How do you define yourself? How do you define yourself culturally? The way we answer these questions say a lot about the way we approach the ever-growing diversity of our communities. The health of a community goes beyond exercise and eating right, it also includes tolerance, acceptance and seeing the value of every individual. This training will help your staff define how their professional and personal behaviors emerge in relationship to others that are of the same or different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
Great Camp Buildings Lafayette Suite Greg Copeland Domokur Architects
This is an interactive opportunity to share our common experiences with the design, development and operation of great camp buildings. We will share our 40 years of experience as camp planners and architects for over 450 camps. We welcome the participants of this workshop to share their own experiences.
Developing Cultural Competence Amiably Chippewa Suite Deb Jordan East Carolina University
People often dread Cultural Competence training because it can make them feel bad. Yet, we all have a responsibility to meet the needs and interests of diverse people. Participants will leave with a guilt-free model of understanding diversity, ideas for staff training, and helpful hints for working with others to become more culturally competent.

EDUCATION SESSIONS , continued Developing an Initiatory Program for 16 & 17 Year Old Males
Ossabaw Room
Dan Davis Camp Rockmont for Boys
It cannot be denied that our society has embraced a culture of prolonged adolescence. We need a catalyst to launch our young men into adulthood. After 50 years with a CIT program, Camp Rockmont changed course in its approach with 16 and 17-year-old young men. The Catalyst Program is an initiatory experience that communicates that our communities cannot thrive if we continue to delay adulthood. Join us as we unpack this program and leave with tangible steps to set-up your own initiatory program.
Partnership with the Health Center: Improving Health Outcomes for Campers and Staff Monterey Suite Lisa Cranwell-Bruce Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta
Having problems retaining health care staff? Not sure how to describe the health care needs of your staff and campers? Do you want to improve communication with your health care staff and incorporate them into the rest of the camp staff? Attend this session to learn how to collaborate and communicate with your health care team to improve staff health and wellness, have your health care staff return each year, meet the Health and Wellness Standards, and keep your campers happy and healthy.

Staff Appreciation on a Shoestring Budget Ossabaw Room Kim Aycock Camp 2 Campus Learning Solutions
Wish you could do more for your staff to give them the recognition they deserve for the work they do? Not sure how you can accomplish this without adding to your list of expenses? This session will provide a long list of examples that will help you express your gratitude without breaking the bank! Not only will you be showing appreciation for your staff, but you will also teach staff a valuable lesson about paying it forward to the campers (without resorting to store-bought items)!
Lessons Learned: From the Front-line Perspective Sapelo Room Gwynn Powell Clemson University, Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Management Program
Join us for a panel discussion comprised of university students who share lessons learned from their jobs (working for you!) this past summer. They won’t hold back and you can ask questions. It will be lively and honest.
15
EDUCATION SESSIONS , continued Aquatics Lafayette Suite Lake White Starfish Aquatics Institute
Come experience new “Learn to Look” activities designed to simulate and motivate your lifeguards and aquatic staff! Take home useful ideas for the initial guard training class, in-service training during your season, and programs to help finish your season with a strong team. These activities are adaptable to all types of lifeguarded facilities and are insightful for all guards---setting a good foundation for new guards, and powerful reinforcement for even well experienced ones. This session can serve as a great reminder to all of us of the importance of our overall lifeguard staff “attitude” and culture. We must constantly battle against the threat of lifeguard boredom; inattention and compliancy...come, share, and learn solutions to getting the best out of your lifeguard team!
Creating Champions for Your Camp Chippewa Suite Tom Holland ACA, Inc.
We all know that word of mouth marketing can be some of the best marketing for any product, camps included. Come to this session to learn how to utilize a specific strategy to enhance and track your word of mouth marketing by creating champions for your camp program.
Managing Risks: Helping Children Conquer Fear, Reassuring Parents, and Fending Off Attorneys Monterey Suite Deborah Ausburn Taylor English Duma LLP
Keeping children safe is the highest priority for camping, but numerous studies show harms from keeping children too safe. Children who never face adversity enter adulthood ill-equipped for its challenges. Camp is an unrivaled opportunity for children to overcome their fears and test the limits of the physical world. Having a balanced approach to risk management will require educating parents about the benefits of age-appropriate risks, as well as careful oversight of staff and children.
2:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Engaging Staff Through Skills Development Sapelo Room Dawn Daria & Paul Miller Flow Circus
A recent Gallup poll revealed that 71% of American workers are not engaged costing the U.S. billions of dollars. How much is it costing your camp? This session will engage participants by introducing new skills and positioning them in their optimal zone of learning. The experience will provide rich discussion for how skill development can help staff grow into stronger counselors, coaches, and leaders.
16
EDUCATION SESSIONS , continued Activities Abound! Ossabaw Room Susan Powell
University of Georgia, Outdoor Recreation Program Ever get tired of the same old warm-ups and ice breakers designed to help your staff and/or your campers get to know one another better? In this get-up and move session, you’ll learn from a seasoned challenge course professional the newest games and initiatives out there and how best to facilitate them. The best part: all of these activities utilize little to no equipment, so all you need to bring is an open mind and a body ready to move!
Finding a Career at Summer Camp Lafayette Suite Jane Schenck Green River Preserve
Life is more than a summer job at camp. For those of us lucky enough to have (or have had) a full time job in summer camp there are consistencies about our journey from camp counselor to camp director. This panel discussion with a variety of camp professionals in for profit, non-profit, agency run, religiously affiliated, and private camps will share recommendations for those looking for a full time, year round camp position.
Kids Who Own You Chippewa Suite Dorcas Tomasek The Redwoods Group
Kids who have run out of coping skills or who have not learned what to do when they get frustrated need additional support from staff. Come learn strategies to help staff identify triggers and techniques to use when things get “heated”. When kids are giving us their worst, we must continue to give them our best.
A Covenant with Campers and Their Families: What is Your Camp’s Signature Experience? Monterey Suite Dan Mathews Camp Twin Lakes
Camp Twin Lakes, which partners with nearly 70 nonprofits to provide camp experiences for children with medical needs wanted to ensure that the “signature CTL experience” was consistent despite working with a wide variety of populations and organizations. In doing so, we developed our Camper Covenant, which is centered on FOCUS, CONNECT, TRANSFORM. We use this Mantra, and tools we developed to assess the needs of our campers, plan for camp, and evaluate camp’s staff, operations, and programs.
