KEYNOTE SPEAKERS TRAVIS ALLISON Tell Your Story: Going from “camp” to “Oh, Wow, THAT CAMP!” Wednesday, November 4, 9:15 am Cammunity Room Some summer camps are still practitioners of the old campfire tradition: telling great stories. As I travel the country and speak with professionals, I find that the skill-set of telling your camps story is diminishing. When I visit camps in the summer, I rarely see that awesome moment of kids leaning forward in anticipation while a leader holds their undivided attention with tales of adventure or heroes overcoming great odds. The camp industry is missing a very important ingredient. That storytelling skill will be the one thing that we can do to fight the malaise of our industry: camp is dying. Telling your camp’s story (and how it has touched the lives of youth) to parents, teachers, and those demographics that don’t have a familiarity with camp will be essential to the survival of our industry. We know that camp provides an amazing experience for children of all ages, but do others? In this keynote address, I will talk about ways to communicate the incredible stories of the transformative power of camp and demonstration cool examples from the world of summer camp (and beyond!) Together we can save camp!

DR. DEBORAH GILBOA The Success of Failure; How Great Mentors Let Kids Fail, and You Can Too! Thursday, November 5, 9:15 am Cammunity Room With all the pressure to make kids happy, and see them succeed, it feels impossible to allow campers to learn hard life lessons. Parenting and Youth Development Expert, Dr. G, will address this topic head on, making the case that kids and teens need failure in order to learn the ingredients of happiness: confidence, competence and strong relationship skills. She empowers mentors/adults to take a step back and allow failure to foster effective decision making about the rare times we must step in to protect kids. Dr. G gives strategies to handle failure in order to build the skills they’ll need on their path to success.

Susan Yoder, American Camp Association

Smart plans are critical. But, if we don’t get the words off the page and into people’s heads, we have failed. Sandy Hook reinforces that training is everything given that people can’t and won’t run to look at binders for response in a real emergency. Learn why your employees are really the first responders, not police, fire and EMTs. What are the legal requirements for training? What are the current practices and obstacles in organizations regarding training? What are the proven ways to train for emergency response? How does your organization compare?

How the APG Can Transform Your Staff Training Forever...Who Knew!?

Come and discuss what’s on your plate as a special needs camp and learn from each other’s knowledge and experience.

Alicia Daneberg, Chatham University

Each year we try to come up with engaging staff training sessions for our staff while doing two things: Trying not to do exactly what we did last summer, and we try to make our training better and more informative for staff. With accreditation on the books in 2015, there was less time to be creative and more time to fall in love with the APG (Accreditation Process Guide). Yes, the APG Guide that stares at camp professionals year round from our desk, or book shelf has been reincarnated as the official staff training guide for 2016. Use the APG to find inspiration, follow ACA policies and procedures, all while creating a meaningful staff training. This session will include examples from a successful summer, testimonials from staff, and handouts on items you can take with you for your own staff training in 2016!

Spring Creek

Little Monsters — one thing camp people have in common with Lady Gaga. No, I’m not referring to our campers, I mean that we have affectionate nicknames for the important people in our life. Lady Gaga is a top-selling music artist because she is amazing at building and looking after her community (whom she calls her Little Monsters). Camp leaders can learn a lot (and will in this session) from how Lady Gaga’s treats her true fans.

Protecting Your Camp’s Special Needs Personnel During Emergencies

Bo Mitchell, 911 Consulting

Evergreen

There should be a plan for any disabled or Special Needs Personnel (SNP) in any emergency, in any and every camp in America no matter your size. Planning should be written and organized site-specifically. This requires assignment, planning, and training of the employee emergency team by law. Learn the laws and regulations applicable to SNPs for emergency planning, training, drills, and exercises. Learn the mistakes made by other employers in planning emergency response for SNPs. Are your practices compliant?

7 Attributes for Teen and Young Adult Camp Staff Kelly Weisner, Penn State Extension 4-H

Bear’s Den

Work ethic is knowing what to do and doing it. It is marked by an individual’s attitude, reliability, professionalism, initiative, respect, integrity, and gratitude. Instilling these seven attributes into their heart and mind is crucial to becoming a prosperous employee. For America’s young employees, work ethic is vital to success. (Eric Chester) We’ve worked with seven work ethic markers and how they relate to the teen or young adult counselors in the 4-H camp program. Knowing and understanding these markers is important to helping these young adults succeeding in their future.

Where Did the Leads Go?

Peter Ross, 829 Studios

Remember when camps were all 7 weeks and you had a waitlist? The industry is undergoing a profound transformation and it’s time we discuss these market changes, formulate a strategy and put the wheels in motion. 25 Little Things that Make Big Things Happen

Sam Bloom, Emma Kaufmann Camp

The little details that are focused on throughout the off-season AND at camp are what bring the big picture to life. CIT/LIT Should Really be Teen Leadership 101!

Bear’s Den

Tim Huchton, American Camp Association This session will discuss how we decided to totally revamp and rebuild our CIT/LIT program. We scratched our old program and implemented a schedule that was focused on leadership and skill development. We changed the culture from the “older campers” just hanging out to a thriving and exciting program. The changes helped us grow our program from 3-4 CIT’s per term to 25 in a matter of years. Come join us as we talk about what worked for us and how you might be able to implement many of the same changes.

Getting More from Facebook Evergreen Peter Ross, 829 Studios

Can you honestly say that you recruited a bunch of new campers last year due to Facebook? Better yet, how many leads did Facebook get you? Of the traffic it referred back to your website, how many of those users actually went on to request information or register? For most camps, the answers to these questions are rather depressing. Despite investing an inordinate amount of time into social media their, return on investment is bleak. However, a number of innovative summer camps have begun to use Facebook a bit differently and the results are pretty unbelievable. During this session, we’ll take a sneak peek at the backend of these camps’ Facebook marketing campaigns to determine how best to manage your camp’s social media presence.

Challenging Staff to Do Hard Things Spring Creek Dr. Deborah Gilboa

Camp counselors and staff are responsible for the well-being and development of children and teens, while still undergoing a great deal of their own change and growth. Deborah Gilboa, MD, is a family physician and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, and a national speaker for parents and educators who has spent 37 summers at camp in one role or another! She will lead an interactive seminar that will give crucial biologic information and address the specific stresses and strengths of teens and young adults, with practical tools for getting the best from your staff, both for themselves and as mentors to your campers. more on next page > 2015 ACA Keystone Annual Retreat Experience - 16

12:00 pm - CHOOSE ONE The Surprising Power of Passionate Parents...Partnering Without Pain Travis Allison, Camp Hacker

Bear’s Den

How many times have you heard a camp director friend say “This job would be so great. . .if there weren’t so parent’s involved!” or “I spend all of my time just dealing with parents. I can’t get anything done.” We think there is a way to have a great relationship with your camp’s parents and still focus on developing a transformative program for their children. Effective partnerships with parents involve: figuring out what gives them stress and communicating how camp solves that problem; looking at your current camp families and figuring out which parents have been your best allies today - then getting more of them.

Traditions: Are They Holding You Back? Mountainside Jonathan Gold, Oak Crest Day Camp

As camp directors, we know that traditions are an integral part of our camp’s cultures. Every camp has unique traditions that make up the very essence of that camps personality. As camping professionals we also know that in order to be competitive we must constantly evolve our business practices and processes. These two things ARE NOT mutually exclusive. How do we get past the “. . . but we always did it that way” mentality when it comes to running our business? Particularly in light of the fact that many of our seasonal employees are educational professionals to whom the word “change” has an entirely different meaning. This session will deal with the hard work of evolving your camp business every year and how to make change and evolution the norm in your organization.

What You Must Know About Mandated Reporting Evergreen Valerie Rode, Lehigh County Office of Children and Youth Services

This workshop is designed to provide participants with information related to the 20 pieces of Child Protection Legislation that have significantly changed the way child abuse and neglect is addressed in Pennsylvania from both the identification, reporting and investigative processes. Participants will understand the amendments to the Child Protective Services Law and the impact on their respective discipline.

Preparing for a Healthy Camp Season Jennifer Wallace, Penn State and Milton Hershey School

Spring Creek

You must prepare all year round to have a healthy camp season. In this session we will discuss the importance of the camp nurse and the relationship between the camp nurse and the camp director. We will also review common infectious diseases at camp and the importance of immunizations for both campers and counselors.

The concept, “MESH,” focuses on the mental, emotional, and social health of campers and staff. It spans a broad scope of concerns and is the current focus of ACA’s Healthy Camps Initiative. Learning how to handle MESH issues at your camp is integral to the safety of your campers and staff. If you see the MESH logo beside a session, it indicates that the session focuses on one or more of the MESH areas for the betterment of campers and/or staff. 2015 ACA Keystone Annual Retreat Experience - 20
