WELCOME “CONNECT. CREATE. CHANGE. IT STARTS WITH US!” On behalf of the ACA, Southeastern Planning Committee, welcome to Jacksonville, Florida! Set in the heart of historic downtown Jacksonville, this conference will provide you with an amazing professional development and networking experience. We worked hard to carry our theme throughout all areas of our conference this year. As we embark on the next level of camp, we are constantly searching for ways to create, connect, and change the world around us. Creating meaningful experiences for campers and staff, connecting with colleagues, campers and parents, and changing how people see the camp experience is the heart of what we do. We hope that you will enjoy what we have lined up for you: • We have not one, but two amazing keynote speakers. Ana Homayoun is the author of three powerful books focused on the issues young people face as they navigate the challenges of school and life. Dr. Kelly Gordon is the Chair of Fine Arts and Director of Theatre at Concordia University Texas. Her keynote address will focus on how theatre empowers youth, with special emphasis on theatre for social change and performing theatre in nature. • Join us for the highly anticipated Tuesday Night Live (TNL)! There will be entertainment, food, drinks, a live and silent auction, and more! Come see what all the talk is about. • Remember to stop by the exhibit hall. Vendors from all over are coming to show off their new and exciting materials. Food, drinks, and entertainment will be provided to attendees visiting the hall. • Never been to Jacksonville? ACA, SOUTHEASTERN SERVICE PROJECT UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA-JACKSONVILLE CENTER FOR AUTISM AND RELATED DISORDERS Every year ACA, Southeastern gives back to the local community in which we hold our conference. This year, we are honored to help the University of Florida-Jacksonville Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD). CARD is a community-based program providing assistance and support to people with an autism spectrum disorder and related disabilities, their families, the professionals serving them, and the community. CARD was established by the Florida Legislature, and is funded by the Florida Department of Education to provide free services and support to eligible constituents throughout Baker, Clay Duval, Flagler, Nassau, and St. Johns counties. Our mission is to provide support and assistance with the goal of optimizing the potential of people with autism and related disabilities. What Are We Collecting? CARD asks for assistance in collecting toys* for their annual Seasons of Hope dinner. This catered holiday meal is provided free to 50 selected families who have a child on the spectrum. There are many fun activities provided throughout the dinner which includes a visit from Santa. Many of these families are struggling financially and because of their child’s disability they cannot attend regular holiday parties. With your help each child will receive 4-5 toys personally selected by Santa! Wish List: (please make sure items remain in their original packaging) – Books

Even camps that do not have access to social media typically use online tools to promote and maintain community, and with that opportunity comes potential challenges. With empathy and humor, noted author and educator Ana Homayoun often helps parents and educators understand the new world of social media socialization, and provides practical tips on how camps can with work children to make better choices around social media use and overall wellness. The session will cover creativity, collaboration, empathy, and social change through a lively speech, some engaging audience participation, and minimal slides. Attendees will leave the session with a deeper appreciation for and understanding of the potential power of theatre at camp, specific theatre-based activities that utilize nature as a stage, and several new ideas to pursue post-conference.

Standards Courses General Training Requirements for Camps It is the expectation that one or more individuals associated with each accredited camp (or a camp working toward accreditation) will attend a standards course. The individual completing the standards course for the camp must be actively involved with the preparation of materials, on site during a significant amount of the camp season, and on site and available the day of the visit. It is also expected that an individual with current standards training be actively involved with the camp and on site during non-visit years. Which Training Should I Attend?

Grief is very likely to manifest itself at camp as campers and staff experience varying stages of loss carried over from or as they are made aware of a new change at home. It is also possible that an unforeseen tragedy may affect your entire camp population during the camp season. Regardless of the situation, camp communities are a perfect bridge to begin or continue the journey of the healing process. Dr. Joann Hendleman, The Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness
This presentation highlights the current issues of body image, self-esteem, and how media correlates to life at summer camp for a camper and/or counselor. We briefly explain the definitions of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder, signs and symptoms of each disorder, and what staff members can do in a potential situation where a camper or co-counselor might be struggling with an eating disorder. We will also teach directors how to notice the beginning signs of eating disorders and what to do. We conclude with effective ways camp can promote positive body image and self-esteem among the camp community, how to best communicate with parents and professionals, and how to model healthy behavior for campers. 19

This session will cover how to design your camp’s leadership program to enable camps to create a pipeline of future staff members from current campers. These skills will help form the basis for in which we make our hiring decisions for summer camp staff and hopefully relieve the stress that comes along with filling the staff board.

Building off of Tuesday’s sessions, Camp as a Bridge to Healing; Crisis Response vs Crisis Reaction, and Camps in Crisis, this session will delve deeper in to the aftermath of a camper death in your camp community and provide guidelines for working with campers, families and staff.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow at camp. Camp is the perfect environment to teach problem-solving, build positive relationships, encourage new behaviors, and build independence. These skills are the reason parents send their children to camp and are the foundations of positive behavior supports. Many camps struggle with campers with significant behaviors issues, while many more don’t even admit them. In this session you will learn how to better be able to include campers with some of the most challenging behaviors. The concept, “MESH,” focuses on the mental, emotional, and social health of campers and staff. It spans a broad scope of concerns and is the current focus of ACA’s Healthy Camps Initiative. Learning how to handle MESH issues at your camp is integral to the safety of your campers and staff. If you see the MESH logo beside a session, it indicates that the session focuses on one or more of the MESH areas for the betterment of campers and/or staff. 22 22

All members of ACA, Southeastern have the right and are encouraged to nominate people for the following recognition awards, given at the ACA, Southeastern Fall Conference each year:
Gay Byers Newcomer Award Awarded for outstanding involvement in ACA, Southeastern activities and/or decision making. Nominee must have been a member of ACA, Southeastern for less than ten years and demonstrate high professional standards.
Distinguished Service Award Awarded for service to ACA, Southeastern that is outstanding and above and beyond the expectations of the position held. Nominee must have served with honor on the ACA, Southeastern or Florida Board and been an ACA member for ten or more years, while continually demonstrating high professional standards.
Community Service Award Awarded for outstanding contributions and/or support by local individuals or groups to the field of camp, local region, or local community.
