Dear Yale Traveler Dear Fellow Travelers, It is my pleasure to accompany you on a voyage of discovery as rich in history and memory as any in the world. Starting in London, we follow the path of the Normandy invasion of 1944, precisely 70 years after D-Day. We follow in the footsteps of the greatest Armada of modern times, and follow armies of men and women from 15 different countries determined to break through the Atlantic Wall Hitler had built and liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny. We walk in the footsteps of Winston Churchill in his underground war rooms, travel to Bletchley Park where the Nazi secret codes were broken, and put on Churchill’s desk 24 hours after they were issued all of Hitler’s battle orders. We travel south to Portsmouth, where DDay command hatched the biggest secret of the war, and in Southwick House, look at the maps Eisenhower used when he gave the decisive order to go, despite terrible weather, on 6 June 1944. We cross the Channel south following the path of the invading forces, and view the heights that faced them when they waded ashore on the ‘longest day’. We join in commemorative ceremonies at the vast American cemeteries in Normandy, on D-Day plus 70 years, and then move on to their destination, Paris, where our tour ends. We touch sites of legends and history, and to help you savor them better, I will try to tell you a bit about the history of the Second World War and of this Norman invasion of 1944, and its consequences. The Europe of today was made possible by the Normandy landings, the success of which was by no means assured, and which required staggering courage and determination of a vast assembly of sea, land, and air power. In the last phase of our voyage, we come to one of the symbols of Europe the Nazis tried to destroy, and which resisted their cruelty until invading forces broke Hitler’s hold on France. I speak of Giverny, where Monet painted his water lilies, among the glories of the world of art. My wife Caroline and I look forward to sharing this time of tourism and pilgrimage, of sightseeing and commemoration, and of enjoying the loveliness of the two great cities, London and Paris, and the countryside which adjoins them. We also look forward to sharing the delights of both English and French cuisine at its best. Until we meet in London. Yours sincerely,

This afternoon visit the newly renovated Imperial War Museum, where we will explore its vast WWII collection. This evening, enjoy a private reception and dinner at the hotel. (R,D) SUNDAY JUNE 1: London: Imperial War Museum/Bletchley Park. Begin today at Winston Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms and Museum. It is from this underground “safe place” that Churchill directed the British war effort and where today one can still see maps, telephones and bunks preserved since 1945. This afternoon travel to Bletchley Park and discover the real story behind the Enigma code breakers, credited to have shortened the war by successfully deciphering the encryption used by the Wehrmacht to safeguard its messages. Our evening is at leisure in London. (B,L)

Travel to Portsmouth and begin with a stop at Southwick House, Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force, and location from which Eisenhower made the “let’s go!” decision on the eve of June 6th. View the impressive map room depicting the location of troops and strategies for landing as they were on the morning of D-Day. Continue to the D-Day Museum and Overlord Embroidery. Taking its cues from the famed Bayeux Tapestry recounting William the Conqueror’s success in Great Britain, the Overlord Embroidery depicts the events of D-Day in dramatic and colorful artistic fashion. At 2:30 pm board a ferry in Portsmouth and cross the English channel to Caen. Arrive at 9:30 pm and transfer to the Hotel Argouges in the center of Bayeux, a perfect home-base for retracing the steps of the Allied troops. (B) TUESDAY JUNE 3: Caen /Arromanches: Visit the Musée Memorial in Caen this morning, featuring the ‘D-Day and Battle of Normandy’ exhibition. Continue to Arromanches and see the Mulberry harbor – known as Port Winston – a remaining prefabricated

concrete platform designed to assist in landing Allied supplies. Visit the Arromanches Landing Museum and watch a spectacular film experience of the D-Day landings in the Arromanches 360 film theater. This evening, enjoy a reception at the Chateau de Creully, used by the BBC to broadcast following the invasion. (B,R) WEDNESDAY JUNE 4: Sainte Mère Eglise/Utah Beach: Begin your journey in Normandy by exploring Sainte Mère Eglise, site of the dramatic 82nd and 101st Airborne Division paratrooper landing on the night of June 5th and early hours of June 6th. It is on the small church steeple in Sainte Mère Eglise that John Steele’s parachute became ensnared. He survived, suspended throughout the night with the church bells ringing in his ears. After viewing the church, cross the town square for a tour of the Paratrooper Museum, replete with airplanes and other D-Day artifacts. Continue to Utah Beach, site of an important American troop landing. Discover its Museum and monuments, and walk, at leisure, along the beach. On your return to your hotel, stop at La Cambe, a large WWII German cemetery. Enjoy an evening at leisure. (B)

THURSDAY JUNE 5: Pointe du Hoc/Omaha Beach: Along the Norman coastline, one of the most dramatic sites is Pointe du Hoc, where U.S. rangers scaled steep cliffs in order to destroy key German positions. Walk through cratered pathways and imagine the bravery and action of those rangers on the morning of June 6th. Pause to pay your respects at the monument erected in their honor. Walk Omaha beach, site of the bloodiest fighting of invasion day, and lay a wreath at the American Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer. (B) FRIDAY JUNE 6: D-Day Remembered: Participate in official 70th anniversary remembrance ceremonies. Return to Bayeux for a dinner of local specialties. (B,D) SATURDAY JUNE 7: Giverny/Paris: Depart Normandy for Paris. Pause at Claude Monet’s beautiful home and gardens at Giverny. This afternoon continue to Paris.
