Educating Girls
SINCE1882
The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) was founded on a pioneering approach to provide equal opportunities to girls by offering a rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum, tailored specifically to girls’ learning needs. The OLP difference stands in the balance between academic excellence and care for the individual, allowing our students to satisfy their thirst for knowledge, broaden their horizons, cultivate their passions, and nuture their faith. OLP graduates are thoughtful and innovative leaders who are equipped to tackle the world’s biggest challenges and are a force for good in the world.
ALL
OF WHICH WOMAN is Capable
The sky is the limit at OLP! Rooted in the Sisters of St. Joseph’s history and charism, OLP has been preparing women to “be all of which woman is capable” for more than 140 years. Supporting the individual uniqueness and passions of each learner, an OLP student is not just a number. She is a valuable member of our learning community whose needs are attended to with great care. When it comes to educating your daughter, our knowledge goes beyond the classroom, as it is rooted in the deep understanding that our girls need more than academics to become “women of heart, faith, courage, and excellence.” At OLP, all administration, faculty, and staff are invested in providing a safe, supportive environment for your daughter to learn, explore, have fun, pray, and achieve anything she sets her mind to!
SHE IS FREE TO BE Herself
Today, more than ever, the relevance of single-sex education for girls is supported by research: girls in single-sex schools not only outperform their peers in co-educational schools, but are also more prone to speak up and to seek leadership opportunities once in college and the workplace. Why?
Imagine being in a place that is free of judgment, a place that encourages you to pursue your passions and dive deeper into understanding yourself and the world around you with no inhibitions or bias. Society puts incredible pressure on girls starting from a very young age. At OLP we equip girls with tools to navigate the world and to discern what is truly meaningful from what is just noise. OLP students build their character based on confidence, respect, determination, self-worth, and love.
Girls’ school students are more likely than their female peers at coeducational schools to experience an environment that welcomes an open and safe exchange of ideas. Nearly 87% of girls’ school students feel their opinions are respected at their school compared to only 58% of girls at coeducational schools.
Dr. Richard A. Holmgren, Allegheny College, Steeped in Learning: The Student Experience at All-Girls Schools
SHE IS MORE THAN A CLASSMATE;
She is a Sister
In an all-girls’ learning environment, sisterhood is not just a cliche, but a tangible reality. The bonds formed among students during their time at OLP become lifelong, sisterly connections that will endure over time. The depth of these bonds can be seen through the love and support our alumnae continue to have for their sisters as the years go by. From the moment they join as freshmen, students are welcomed into a nurturing and supportive community that becomes a second home.
In the business world, the power of relationships and networking cannot be overstated. Women who have experienced the sisterhood of an all-girls’ school often bring a strong foundation of trust and support to their professional lives. They understand the importance of lifting each other up, mentoring one another, and working together to break barriers and overcome gender biases.
A network of over 10,000 alumnae means that when our students spread their wings and leave for college, they know they can connect with an OLP sister virtually anywhere in the U.S. and beyond!

SHEISA Leader
At OLP, girls hold 100% of all leadership positions. Our students become accustomed to what true leadership looks like and they are not afraid to take it to the next level outside of OLP’s walls. One can always spot an OLP student or alumna, as her blend of confidence, emotional intelligence, and commitment to teamwork sets her apart from her generational peers. By removing boys, we remove the competition factor, the insecurities, and often, the drama. OLP is a sisterhood, and it shows especially in situations where our students are asked to raise the bar and lead from their heart. Our students set an example for other girls to follow, showing them how to achieve their goals while cheering on others.
Academic studies and countless anecdotes make it clear that being interrupted, talked over, shut down or penalized for speaking out is nearly a universal experience for women when they are outnumbered by men.
—The New York Times, “The Universal Phenomenon of Men Interrupting Women.”
Girls’ school graduates are 10% more likely than co-educated peers to have a political discussion with friends. They also find it essential to keep current with political issues.
—Dr. Linda Sax, UCLA, “Women Graduates of Single-Sex and Coeducational High Schools: Differences in their Characteristics and the Transition to College”
These are only some of the leadership opportunities available to our students:
Student Government
The members of OLP’s Associated Student Body (ASB) proudly represents their 750 sisters. Additionally, each class elects several members to serve as its Class Council. All ASB and Class Council members partner to govern the student body. Among their many duties, they deliver the daily announcements and plan events.
Club Leadership
With over 60 student-led clubs, students are able to take on a variety of leadership roles while deepening their unique passion and making new friends! Students plan and lead all club activities, learn important practical organizational skills, and put their leadership to the test as they aim to achieve the “Club of the Year” award!
Team Captains
Our athletes are some of the most dedicated and selfless leaders, on and off the field. They motivate teammates, foster a positive team environment, and proudly represent OLP at local, state, and national competitions, all while keeping academics as a top priority.
Performing Arts Leadership
OLP’s emphasis on the performing arts gives students the opportunity to grow not only as performers but as part of a bigger production. Unique apprenticeships are available for sound, costumes, props, lights construction and crew where, in the true spirit of sisterhood, upper class leaders pass their expertise down to their apprentice, ensuring seamless skill transfer. Spring Sing, OLP’s long-standing tradition, is a one-of-a-kind student-led production that introduces students to the performing arts.
OLP Departmental Internship Program
Internships are available to OLP students through some of our administrative departments, such as Marketing, Informational Technology, and Institutional Advancement. Students are able to see firsthand the many things that go into running a school, as well as learn practical skills that translate directly to the workplace. One of the most popular internships is with OLP’s catering partner, the French Gourmet. Students learn how to work in a fast-paced environment, interact with customers, and prepare beverages like coffee and boba!
Women’s Symposium
This signature event is designed and executed annually by our students for our broader San Diego community. Our students bring together leaders from a variety of fields to inspire our young girls and introduce them to networking for good. This is a celebration of successful women and the power of togetherness. On average, 20% of our speakers who attend the symposium are alumnae of the school. Speakers are selected by our students to ensure the relevance and the impact of each session is met. Some past keynote speakers include Maya Gabeira, 2020 World Record Big Wave Surfer; Haben Girma, lawyer, author, and the first blind deaf graduate of Harvard Law School; and, Stephanie Espy, author of STEM Gems.

SHE Engages With Technology
At OLP, students are actively encouraged to engage with technology in a supportive and fun environment that fosters their curiosity while increasing their confidence and skills. Girls can freely explore and excel in technology-related subjects while expressing themselves in unique and innovative ways.
Our Pilot Productions (PTV) program is an example of how hands-on experience in broadcasting exposes students to vast and creative ways to use technology, not exclusive to STEM subjects.
With full access to our 3D printers, girls can bring their ideas to life, design prototypes, and understand the practical applications of the latest technology in various fields.
OLP is working to bridge the gender gap in specific industries, promote diversity, and empower girls to excel in the digital age. As a recognition of our commitment, OLP received the College Board PLATINUM school badge for the 2024 AP School Honor Roll which recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access.
SHE Invents and Creates
At OLP, we foster interest and skill development in STEM disciplines while working to challenge stereotypes and norms about what girls like or what subjects they excel in. OLP provides a wealth of avenues for development and self-exploration and girls also see a wealth of peer role models because, as we know, representation matters. Girls need to “see it to be it," and seeing a sister building a robot or experimenting in a lab, allows our students to imagine all sort of paths for themselves, even ones they would never have thought they could walk.
Research shows girls’ school graduates are six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology compared to girls who attended co-educational schools.
OLP offers a robust STEM program, which includes over 42 courses, at different levels (college prep, honors, and AP classes). Other STEM related opportunities include:
STEM Certificate Program
This exclusive Certificate Program acknowledges students for their achievements and involvement in STEM-related activities during their time at OLP. The program requires students to gain hands-on experience through internships, presentations, and completion of 80 units between math and STEM departments.
College Board’s AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award
This award acknowledges 1,105 schools for their work toward equal gender representation during each academic school year. OLP is consistently one of only 64 schools to be recognized for achieving this important result in both AP Computer Science A and AP Computer Science Principles.
Robotics Team
The team is one of the few girls-only teams competing at national and international levels and has received accolades and awards for its robotic builds and presentation skills. The OLP robotics team received grants from leading actors in the tech industry, such as QUALCOMM, and earned a spot in the extremely competitive Robotics World Championships twice, a testament to the impressive work and talent of our Pilots.
Hackathon
Created by OLP’s Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Club, OLP’s Hackathon was founded in 2020 by a group of students passionate about STEM. This incredible student-led event focuses on how global issues can be solved using science, technology, engineering and math. Past themes included “Life on Mars” and “Animal Endangerment." This event is also a testament to the power of role modeling as it is open to students grade 6-12, because it’s never too early to fall in love with science!
“The girls often come to robotics because their friend brought them, and as they learn you hear them say, ‘I like doing this!’. Next thing you know, they become an engineering major and go off to do wonderful things in the world. I’ve seen students come in who have never held a tool before and when they leave they’re running power saws and using the mill and designing things in CAD to create 3D models to go in the robot to enhance performance”
— Mr. Jim Cooney, OLP Math and Science Teacher and Robotics Team Moderator

Embracing the Transformative Power of Travel
We recognize the profound impact that travel can have on young minds, offering them the opportunity to expand their horizons, discover new cultures, and build a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through carefully curated journeys, our students embark on unforgettable experiences that shape their character and contribute to their personal and academic growth.
CSJ Pilgrimage: Le Puy, France Imagine walking in the footsteps of history, experiencing the cobblestone streets, churches, and cathedrals that the original six Sisters of St. Joseph (CSJ) traveled and visited in 1650. Our CSJ Pilgrimage to Le Puy, France offers a unique opportunity for students to connect with the roots of our mission, while forging lasting friendships.
Trek of the Seven: San Diego to Tucson, AZ The Trek of the Seven is not merely a physical journey; it’s a testament to the power of determination and teamwork. Students embark on an incredible expedition from the sun-kissed shores of San Diego to the arid beauty of Tucson, AZ, retracing the journey of the seven Sisters of St. Joseph who made the trek in a covered wagon in 1870.
Connecting Communities: Mexicali and Beyond Our annual trip to Mexicali is more than just a border-crossing; it’s a bridge that connects hearts and minds. Students engage in meaningful service through heartfelt encounters with migrant families waiting to enter the United States, fostering cross-cultural connections and gaining a deeper understanding of global issues.
National Conferences: A gateway to excellence through our participation in prestigious national conferences like the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS) in Boston and the California Conference for Women in Northern California, our students have the opportunity to showcase their talents and learn from leaders.

From Robotics to Model United Nations, students engage in hands-on experiences that transcend the classroom. As they collaborate on projects, present their ideas, and compete on a national stage, they develop essential skills that prepare them for a future of limitless possibilities.
At OLP, travel is a transformative journey that empowers young women to become confident, compassionate, and globally-aware leaders. Join us in embracing the world and discovering the extraordinary within yourself!
SHE SERVES God AND THE “Dear Neighbor”
When the original six Sisters of St. Joseph dedicated their lives to serving the people of Le Puy-en-Velay in France in 1650, they referred to those whose needs they prayerfully responded to as equal siblings in Christ and their “dear neighbors.” This spirit of humble service in accompaniment with our dear neighbors today permeates the life of our OLP community. Whether they are serving within our OLP community, learning about and responding to the needs of our local San Diego community, or encountering and serving our siblings in Mexico or other countries, OLP students embrace opportunities to serve and be transformed by people in a wide variety of life circumstances.
On average, graduating classes earn upwards of 30,000 hours of community service over four years.
Nearly 40% of OLP graduates attend faith-based universities, which speaks speaks to how our students feel called to continue serving God and our dear neighbors, a foundation in faith and service laid by OLP.
SHEHAS Fun
Maintaining a social and academic balance during high school is crucial for the overall well-being and development of students. It is important to recognize that high school is not just about academic achievement but also about personal growth, social interaction, and emotional well-being. At OLP, we value fun during the school day as much as outside of school. From Wacky Wednesdays to Spirit Rallies, and the annual Spring Sing production to class celebrations, OLP students receive opportunities to be joyful, uninhibited girls.
Through our partnership with Saint Augustine High School and our collective motto, “Two Schools One Spirit,” students experience the social and co-curricular events typical of high school life. Annual dances, class socials, Friday night football games, ASB programs, and community service projects all provide opportunities for social engagements. Opportunities such as these provide our girls not only with joy but lasting memories.
SHE IS Safe
Creating a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, and community is at the heart of everything we do at OLP. We understand that a safe campus is not just a physical space, but a holistic approach that encompasses emotional well-being, digital health, and an inclusive community. When you choose OLP, you’re choosing a school that takes safety seriously.
Comprehensive Security Measures:
Closed Campus: All entrances and exits are closely monitored. No persons are permitted on campus, other than staff or students, without lawful business or an appointment. All visitors are required to check in at the Main Office and wear a badge. This ensures that only authorized individuals can access our premises, providing an added layer of protection.
State-of-the-Art Surveillance: Students’ safety is under watchful eyes. With over 60 security cameras strategically placed across our expansive four-acre campus, we maintain a constant vigilance.
On-Site Security Partners: Our dedicated on-site security staff work tirelessly to maintain a secure atmosphere. Trained professionals who are attuned to the unique needs of our school community, they’re always ready to respond swiftly to any situation.
Campus Supervisor: Our campus supervisors play a vital role in upholding safety protocols. They provide a visible presence, offer guidance, and ensure that all safety measures are consistently followed.
Effective Communication:
Timely Communication Communicating quickly and effectively is crucial, especially in an emergency. At OLP, we have established robust communication channels to keep everyone informed and connected. In the event of an emergency, students and parents can rely on us to swiftly communicate important information.
Emotional Safety and Well-Being: Safety goes beyond physical security; it encompasses emotional well-being too. At OLP, we understand the importance of fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. Our partnership with The Social Institute equips students with the tools they need for digital health and safety, ensuring responsible and positive online interactions.
Promoting Inclusivity: Bullying has no place in our community. We firmly believe in an inclusive and respectful atmosphere for all. Our anti-bullying policy, outlined in Chapter 8.5 of our handbook, underscores our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment where every individual is valued and respected.
At OLP, safety is not just a word; it’s a way of life. Join us in creating a secure, supportive, and inspiring environment where your daughter can flourish academically, emotionally, and socially. The journey with us begins in safety and thrives in possibility.
SHEWILL Change the World
The power of education transforms lives and inspires change. Every young woman who walks through our doors has the potential to make a lasting impact on the world, and at OLP, we provide the nurturing and challenging environment necessary to unleash that potential. Our curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, foster critical thinking, and nurture a passion for learning. Through rigorous academic programs and innovative teaching methods, we empower our students to excel academically and embrace challenges with confidence. Your daughter’s time at OLP will be a transformative experience that shapes her into a well-rounded, empowered, and visionary young woman, ready to change the world.
Head of School, Dr. Lauren Lek, aptly puts it, “At OLP, we don’t just educate young women; we equip them with the tools to become faith-filled leaders and changemakers for whatever career they choose to pursue in their future.”
On average, 100% of our students go on to college with 90% receiving more than one acceptance offer.
Consistently over the years, at least three-quarters of our graduating students are offered impressive merit-based scholarships, collectively totaling nearly $30 million dollars annually.
