DIRECTOR’S NOTES

A Note from the Director:

Welcome! Thanks so much for supporting our students. We are so lucky to have our amazing choreographer Ms. Marshall back, as well as gaining Dr. Dicce as our music director. I think we’re a great team! Ms. Cunningham has been a huge addition (math joke) as well, helping us with set decor and props. Thanks to Mr. Tarlov for help with sound and Mrs. Webb for help with costumes. Thanks to all the other staff, faculty, administration, and families for all your dedication. We are so blessed to have this opportunity. This is the first show that I personally picked for OLP, and I knew I wanted to choose something fun, something recognizable, a “big tent” kind of show that would encourage as many students to come out as possible. It’s not surprising that High School Musical is so popular for our students as it clearly upholds the CSJ charism to “serve the dear neighbor without distinction.” This musical shows the value in courage, individuality, working for the greater good, and helping our dear neighbor become their best selves. I had never seen High School Musical before a few months ago. I was graduating college when it was first showing on Disney Channel. It turns out that it is literally Grease for a new generation. In the late ‘90s there was a push to remake it with Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera! That script evolved over the next five years into High School Musical. Mind blown. When I first watched HSM I was struck by the catchy music, the themes of acceptance and by how deeply my students connected to it. I believe it is their zeitgeist, the “defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.” This musical cherishes people becoming who they are, overcoming limits, and embracing their multifaceted selves. When I was in high school, I was a wrestler. I was scared to sing in front of people and my school pretty much only did musicals. But during my junior year, our school put on a play with no singing, It’s a Wonderful Life. The English teacher who directed the plays, Mr. Lee, wanted me to audition for the greedy banker Mr. Potter, but I told him I couldn’t because of wrestling. Well, Mr. Lee went to my wrestling coach and they worked out a deal where I would rehearse around my wrestling schedule. I was nervous about what people would say, and I knew for sure the other wrestlers would give me a hard time. I went for it anyway and we pulled it off. Opening night was exhilarating, and I guess I made an impact because when I took my bows, the audience booed me, the ultimate compliment for a villian. Mr. Lee helped me embrace a different side of myself and it changed my life. If I had stuck with the status quo, today I would be doing something much less fun than directing this play with this amazing team of students and teachers. HSM is a love story, but not so much about Gabriella and Troy finding each other, but about them finding themselves. There are so many things we can do, but what do we choose to do? I believe that is what high school is all about-- try everything! If it doesn’t work, assess the results. Did you enjoy it? Was it fun? What could you do to get better? Talent is certainly a real thing, but what matters more is intentional practice. Malcolm Gladwell’s famous 10,000 hour rule totally applies. It takes about 10,000 hours of intentional practice where you actively try to improve at a skill before you attain mastery. Remember, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” You can do it! Thank you so much for being here. I hope you enjoy our spin on this modern classic.

-Justin Tracy
