DIRECTOR’S NOTES A Note from the Director: Hello and welcome! I am so glad to have you join us on this wild ride through the woods. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of the most-produced comedies in history and for very good reason: the four interlocking plots work together magically. Tradition holds that this play was originally commissioned as a wedding gift. The journey from confusion to love plays as well today as it did when it was written over 400 years ago. This is the third time I have worked on a production of this comic masterpiece--I played Demetrius, then worked as Assistant Director--but to get to put my own spin on it has been so much fun. As you probably know, it was literally illegal for women to perform on stage in Elizabethan England. All of the female roles would have been performed by boys or men; I find if very satisfying to produce the inverse. That said, my biggest challenge with this play has always been Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. These Amazons are those from Greek myth--DC’s character Wonder Woman is basically the granddaughter of Hippolyta. How do we treat this character in a way that uplifts her? Many productions show her as hurt, distant, and angry. However, this doesn’t seem to fit Shakespeare’s intent--this was a wedding gift, afterall. Is it possible to present her in a way that she is equal to Duke Theseus, founder of Athens, hero who defeated the Minotaur to escape the Labyrinth? The prologue we constructed answers that question in a way that I believe solves many of these problems, while remaining true to the play and our ugent modern sensibilities. One of the great joys with Shakespeare is that the text is strong enough to support many interpretations. While there must be a reason for every choice, there is great flexibility. We have some experimental music and dance in this one, and I hope that you enjoy watching our fairies of dark and light battle, then come to unity. It’s clear that even Shakespeare was a bit afraid of alienating his audience at that wedding when you account for Puck’s apology in the epilogue: “If we shadows have offended,/ Think but this and all is mended,/ That you have but slumber’d here/ While these visions did appear.” I hope that you do let yourself fall deeply in our waking dream. Thank you for your support, and please come join us in the fall for Hamlet. Thank you and God Bless!

-Justin Tracy
