Greetings from the Creek! Where did the summer go? I hope that each of you were able to spend time with family and friends and are ready to tackle a new school year together. I am excited to be joining the Cypress Creek team and anticipate a great school year. As the school year begins many of our co-curricular, extra-curricular and club activities will begin. I encourage you to review all that the Creek has to offer and get involved in at least one school organization. The activities and opportunities will help create the ultimate high school experience. There are numerous sessions planned to introduce you to the campus, graduation requirements, and other information to make your first year in high school a success. Although your child may wish you never stopped by school, we want and need you to be involved. Education is a partnership and we encourage you to check Parent Access for assignments and grades, communicate with teachers, and ensure your child’s attendance at school. I know our students strive for independence, but they need your guidance more than you may realize. We encourage you to get involved within continued on page 2...
Heather Hilton, Principal

CCHS Students Summer Experiences Cypress Creek High School has students working, attending summer school, volunteering for their community service hours, and traveling all around. We have a number of students who have been selected for excellent summer educational experiences. Manan Patel has been selected to attend the LEADS America program at Fordham University. Manan has an all-expense paid trip for a week of exciting learning experiences learning about Business. LeadAmerica is one of the nation’s educational leaders in personalized experiential learning. Attending a LeadAmerica Conference provides the opportunity to truly set students apart among a competitive group of peers applying for limited college openings. Students gain the discipline, confidence and sense of responsibility that can help prepare for a bright future. For all attendees, LeadAmerica helps to develop leadership skills needed to succeed — all while enjoying an amazing experience at one of America’s top schools. Bryan Peacker is traveling to Princeton University to participate in the LEDA summer experience where he will spend seven weeks studying Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Scholars. LEDA admits 11th graders whose academic records and accomplishments suggest that they are viable candidates for admission to highly selective colleges and universities. The seven-week summer curriculum, Aspects of Leadership, is intended to emulate the college application process and employed state-of-the-art educational methodologies. Techniques such as role-playing and debate are commonly used in the classes. A part of the experience included student participation in debates requiring them to defend points of view or political beliefs that were contrary to their own. The experience of interacting with students from different backgrounds plays a role in persuading students to look at things from other viewpoints. Karunya Tota was selected to attend The Florida Girl’s State experience this year. High school girls, who have completed their Junior year, spend an intensive week of study, working together as self-governing citizens at Auxiliary-sponsored Girls State programs in every state (with the exception of Hawaii). In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organization. Liang (Kelvin) Chan was selected to attend the HOBY Advanced Leadership Conference. HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. Kelvin will travel to Sarasota for his training. Ali Khater and Karunya Tota have been selected to participate in the FICA internship this summer. In order to provide superior financial and business intelligence training, FICA draws on the leadership and experience of its CEO Mr. Parks who has over 20+ years of professional training as an insurance agent, financial planner, investment advisor, entrepreneur and executive. Mr. Parks has enlisted the support of numerous major corporations and executives to serve as sponsors/advisors. Parents and Administrators can be assured that all FICA instructors are professionally trained individuals that share only the best financial and business intelligence information available today. This strategy has led to several professional educators and community leaders to refer to FICA students as the “best financially trained kids on the planet.” FICA’s leadership believes that financial and business intelligence training helps students perform better in the classroom. Financially intelligent students are better equipped to make the connection between the classroom and the real life skills needed to succeed. Nicole Guevara is spending a month in Germany this summer as the student of German who scored highest on the American Association of Teachers of German’s examination. Nicole will live with a German family and experience all the activities of daily life in a German community.

Poetry Slam Youth poets from across Florida gathered in Orlando this summer for a regional Poetry Slam Camp and Slam Summit at the Empower500 conference sponsored by The English Teacher’s Friend. Poetry Slam is spoken word competition. Poets compete for points by performing original works in three minutes or less with only their voices. Youth at Slam Camp spent three days with Elizabeth Thomas, renown poet and slam coach, and our own coach, teacher and author Lee Ann Spillane. Youth poets were praised by local celebrity judges, Tod Cabiness from the Orlando Sentinel and Myrt Price from Channel 9 WFTV, as well as renown poet, author and activist, Kwame Alexander during the evening. Youth left Slam Camp having set out a plan to grow poetry and spoken word competition in the state in order to create a state poetry slam in the next few years. If your student is interested in spoken word send them to see Mrs. Spillane in portable 29. Poetry Club begins the first week of September.
A few spots are left! We need you!

2013-14 Athletics Paperwork Any athlete wishing to participate in Athletics at CCHS is required to complete FHSAA paperwork each year. The physical is the only part of that paperwork that can transfer calendar year to calendar year. The paperwork is a requirement each academic year. All physicals MUST be completed by the physician on the EL2 form provided by the FHSAA documentation. No Department of Health yellow forms will be accepted. The “Athletics Packet” is available online – go to the CCHS website/athletics/eligibility forms—the athletic forms are in a combined download. 9 pages to print – it is all the documentation necessary to have completed before any tryouts can take place. Make sure you “size to fit” on letter size paper. Paperwork can be returned any time this summer by dropping it off in the main office and asking the front desk to have them place it in Coach Panas’ mailbox. Throughout the summer, this information is processed and provided to our coaching staff for Fall tryouts that begin AUGUST 5th. In order to find out the coach for a particular sport, please utilize the website to find the sport and email the coach directly. Questions or problems are to be directed to: Holly Panas, ATC, LAT - Head Athletic Trainer 407/852-3400 ext 2312. holly.panas@ocps.net With no summer office hours, email is the best way to reach her during this time. REQUIRED CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING: There are new FHSAA guidelines for return to play if an athlete were to sustain a concussion in practice/game. As the parent/athlete, a physician is required to give written consent for return to play. This is mandatory for the protection of our athletes. OCPS Athletics began requiring certain higher risk sports to complete a baseline concussion screening before participation or after being selected for a team. Football and wrestling are the only sports requiring this baseline test BEFORE any tryout setting. The other sports are based up the roster selections after tryouts. The athletic training staff does these screenings at CCHS. If your child is interested in playing football for CCHS, they need to be in summer conditioning. Come August 5th, concussion baseline testing will need to be completed. By being in contact with the football coaching staff, you will find out about several opportunities to complete testing so that on August 5th you will be ready to go.
