Message from the Principal Dear Hinson Hurricane Families, It’s hard to believe the month of May is already upon us. This final full month of the school year promises to be an exciting time for every student here at Hinson Middle School. There are moments of celebration and moments for final assessments scheduled throughout each of the grade levels. I look forward to seeing many of you on campus as the school year’s closing festivities take place.

I know many students and parents will begin summer vacation wondering about end of year exams (EOC’s), and Florida Standards Assessment (FSA’s) scores. Please know that I share your eagerness to see this year’s test results. At this point, I am hopeful we will receive the test results of individual students during the month of June. I will notify all of you via the telephone messaging system when these scores are available.

I also want to take this opportunity to provide a special heart-felt thank you to; Rene Karkut, Dana Weaver, Jonelle Horsley, Tracy Nipper, Kelly Khordsandian, Aimee Gurtis, Barbara Kelly, Lorraine Noronha, Kristen Okarski, Gwen Walsh, Patty Kraft and others.

These PTSA board members and involved parents have worked extremely hard on behalf of the parents, students, staff and faculty of our school. This school is a better place because of their work on fundraisers, dances and countless other activities. These board members have earned my respect and gratitude and I will miss those who are moving on and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with those staying with us at Hinson Middle for another new school year.

It has been and continues to be a privilege to be the principal of such a wonderful school community. I wish all of our eighth grade students a successful transition to high school, and we all look forward to hearing about the positive accomplishments you will have at the next level of your education.

Senate Bill 850 Requirements: Section 14 – Amends s. 1003.4203 (Pages 27-31, Lines 780-886)

The Legislature intends to have 75% of public school middle grades

students earn a Florida Digital Tools Certificate by July 1, 2018. 



Digital Tool Certificates endorse achievement of digital skills that are necessary to the student’s academic work and future employment in grades 3 - 8. We are offering IC3 Spark to 100% of 6th grade this year through English and Science classes.

The skills must include: 

Word processing; Spreadsheets; Presentations, Digital Arts; Cybersecurity; and Coding.

Target Audience: All 6th Grade Students in Volusia County Schools

Number of Questions: 60

Question Types: Multiple Choice, Drag/Drop, Live Action Skills ( i.e.

Pet Food Drive

In April, Mr. Prather›s STEM class built water rockets out of 2 liter bottles and other recycled materials. Rockets had to include a parachute recovery system and used water and compressed air for fuel.

SGA and Girls Get IT would like to say “THANK YOU” to all the students, parents, teachers, and staff that helped make the ARNI cat/dog food drive a success. We were able to donate hundreds of pounds of pet food and treats to a very important local animal rescue. A special shout out to Mrs. G for her help getting the word out each morning in the parent drop off lane.

Congratulations Fitness Team We took our Hinson Fitness team to the 2016 Volusia County Fitness Festival on Friday March 18th to compete against 8 other middle schools in various physical and mental challenges. This year’s team earned 1st place overall in the county! We had 87 children take time out of their spring break to represent Hinson at the Festival. Thanks again for all of the support you have given these students! GO CANES!!

“The Symphonic Band participated at the District 6 Music Performance Assessment on Friday, April 8th. The band received an overall Excellent rating and received the highest rating in the school’s history.”

“They received two Excellents on stage and a Superior, as well as a Superior in sight-reading.”

A band from Hinson has never received a Superior from a judge in their on stage performance, so this was a big accomplishment for the group! :) Michelle Dodson Band Director Hinson Middle School

7 Spread the Word to End the Word During April, Hinson students learned about “Ending the Word” through posters and videos.

This is a National campaign to encourage people to pledge to stop using the word retard. It was started during the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The R-word is the word ‘retard(ed)’. Why does it hurt? The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It’s offensive. It’s derogatory.

The goal of the campaign is to ask people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. In the 2014-15 school year, 19,972 students in Project UNIFY schools pledged to end the use of the R-Word. We hoping to continue to foster inclusion and acceptance within all schools.

Mother’s Day Flower Sale Excitement The second annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale was held May 4th and 5th.

It was a great turn out. There were so many plants to choose from. We were all excited to learn that a parent had generously donated funds. This allowed for students to receive flowers for free.

The excitement of giving is prevalent at Hinson Middle. All proceeds are used to support our Hinson Garden and Special Olympics.

Ms. Rainge’s Computer Classes Hinson Middle School is proud to announce that the 7th and 8th grade computer students have earned a total of 106 Microsoft Office Certifications and 86 IC3 Spark Digital Certifications! Industry certifications represent industry acknowledgement of technical skill attainment of competencies in the Office Administration program. Student Support Information Technology HUB Hinson Middle School has successfully completed another year of the Student Support IT HUB program. Students in Ms. Rainge’s Introduction to Information Technology class were trained in the beginning of the school year by students at Mainland High School and School District Personnel. The student technical assistants have completed over 50 service requests submitted by faculty and staff at Hinson Middle School.

8 Special Olympics

Real Life Civics

Hinson’s Unified Special Olympic CYCLING and BOCCE BALL TEAMS participated in the Special Olympic Regional games in Jacksonville on April 9, 2016. Project Unified is part of the Special Olympics program that helps students with disabilities to participate with a partner to increase athletic and leadership opportunities. Partners help their athletes train in their sport and have fun competing. Hinson athletes received many 1st & 2nd place finishes!

We are excited to announce that Bocce ball team Kelsey Taus and Cody Resch and Cyclists singles Jude Hoffman and Jennifer Ramp, and Tandem cyclists Courtney Kennedy and Mary Green are going to compete in the State Games in Orlando at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex!

Hinson’s Unified Special Olympic teams want to give a huge “THANK YOU!” for generosity from community and families. A special recognition to the following supporters for going above and beyond! Donations from Mrs. Justice towards a field trip to SeaWorld and from Mr. Albright for repairs to the Bocce court. The teams looked great after Mrs. Lecates provided uniform shirts. Additional tandem teams were possible with the use of Ms. Holland and Dr. Stanly’s tandem bikes. Mrs. Kennedy donated a bike for a singles rider and provided snacks that kept the cyclists full of energy.

Also, a big “thank you” for all the Hinson community and family support this year!

Mrs. Hack’s classes were honored when a lesson about our Executive Branch resulted in an envelope from the White House. During a lesson on the Presidency, Mrs. Hack’s students utilized our BYOT policy to do a guided tour of the White House. A few students emailed President Obama during their webquest.

Mrs. Hack, and her Advanced Students were thrilled and shocked to receive a signed letter from the President of the United States! ANGRY EAGLE could not be prouder!
