April 2013
Volume 18 • Issue 1
Message from the Principal Dear Eagle Families, I hope you had a wonderful spring break and you are prepared for the testing season that is quickly approaching. Sophomores have already completed FCAT Writes, and our freshmen and sophomores are ready for FCAT Reading 2.0 followed by the end of course exams in a number of subjects. Please check our website and the PTSA eBlast for all testing updates. As always, we ask students to arrive on time and be prepared for testing by getting plenty of rest and eating a balanced breakfast. This year OCPS is offering an “AP Boot Camp” on individual school campuses to help students prepare for the rigorous AP tests in a variety subjects. The AP Boot Camp schedule will be listed on our web site, and teachers may be contacted directly should students have any questions. “Fire and Ice” is this year’s prom theme which will be held April 20 at the Sheraton in Lake Buena Vista. Students
must have at least a 2.0 GPA and parent permission to attend this event. Need a dress? Please visit our E Boutique for the latest styles and the best prices available (free!). Students are reminded that this is an OCPS school sponsored event, and the Code of Conduct is enforced. We encourage students to make good choices! The May calendar is filled with senior activities, so please check our website for events and information. Students are invited to visit the College and Career Center for scholarship and testing information. This is a very busy time of year, and we don’t want any student to miss deadlines or opportunities. Please note that graduation for the Class of 2013 is May 29 at 4:00 at the Amway Center. Generosity Filled the Gap
Almost half of the just over 1,700 Edgewater students qualify to receive free and reduced-price lunch, and more than a third are from families with incomes below the poverty line. Those are just statistics, however. Limited financial resources don’t stop these Eagles from succeeding in the classroom or from making huge contributions to our Edgewater community, but the school system can help promote those outcomes in important ways. Through EHS, students have access to a variety of programs and resources that can help address unmet educational, nutritional, and developmental needs. Yet there are some unmet needs that the school isn’t set up to meet or that extend beyond what schools do. At Edgewater, we are fortunate to have dedicated faculty and staff as well as generous friends in the Eagle and College Park communities that that are mindful of those needs. One such effort that becomes particularly important this time of year is the E-Boutique, a special place organized by PTSA volunteers that lets girls (and guys) “shop” free of charge for gently used formal wear and accessories they need for Prom but could not otherwise afford. Through the work of the E-Boutique, students who might not have been able to attend Prom and other special events will have those memories. All of the inventory is donated by EHS students, families and friends. For more basic clothing and related needs that arise on a more regular basis, students have access to a “store” filled with new or slightly worn items that have been donated. Mr. Moran, the EHS SAFE Coordinator, and volunteers from Webster University converted an unused room in Building 2 to become the “Eagle Exchange.” To fill gaps in access to food, the PTSA maintains a food pantry in the Administration Building stocked with a variety of donated non-perishable food items. This includes both staples that can address short-term needs at home as well as ready-toeat items for use at school. Needs are assessed and addressed by Ms. Lopez, Assistant to the Principal, and Ms. Velazquez, our school nurse. The EHS family has done a great job meeting these needs so far, stocking the pantry as well as providing the food needed to fill 80 baskets distributed to Eagle families for the holidays. Old Florida National Bank, the Christian Service Center, and the College Park and Paramount Publix stores, and our own SGA have also been instrumental in that effort. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped fill these gaps along the pathway to success for all Eagles. We have more to do, however, as many of these needs arise throughout the school year. Donations that meet the above specifications can be dropped off to Ms. Williams in the front office.

Keep Up-to Date-with All Things Eagle
This may be the last issue of Eagle News published in hard copy. However, there are still many ways that you can stay connected with what is happening at Edgewater High School: Edgewater High School website www.ocps.net/lc/north/hed This is the official source of school information and is updated regularly. The home page includes a school calendar and current announcements. EHS “Connect-Ed” You should be automatically subscribed if EHS has your current phone number on file. The Guidance Dept. can update/edit. This is the service that Mrs. Erickson and Orange County Public Schools use periodically to deliver important announcements to Eagle families. Eagle Athletics on Twitter Follow @GoEHSEagles This is the best way to keep up with the latest scores and other Eagle sports news. EHS PTSA “E-Blast” To subscribe, send an email to ehsptsa@gmail.com. This is a periodic e-mail that keeps the Eagle community aware of news and events, especially ways to be engaged and involved in making our great school even better. You do not need to be a PTSA member to receive these emails. EHS PTSA on Facebook Like the Edgewater High School PTSA page Edgewater Foundation website www.edgewaterfoundation.com This is the website for the EHS foundation, which is like the booster club for the entire school. Each year, the Foundation distributes money it raises to EHS programs, clubs, organizations, faculty and teacher development and appreciation, and projects for the school itself.
Eagle Flight 5K Soars to New Heights
The PTSA hosted the 2013 Eagle Flight 5K Walk/Run on February 23rd. It was the perfect day to run (or walk) through the Edgewater campus and adjacent College Park neighborhoods! This year, the event raised more than $11,000 after expenses – an Eagle Flight record. All of these funds were distributed directly to EHS clubs, teams and groups as well as to our feeder schools. As part of the registration process for the event, each participant or sponsor could designate a group or organization connected to EHS in some way to receive a share of the event proceeds. In fact, half of each registration fee and sponsorship went directly to benefit these recipient groups. Boys Lacrosse ($1,245), Girls Lacrosse ($915), and Baseball ($710) teams were the biggest on-campus beneficiaries. Lake Silver Elementary ($635), Princeton Elementary ($635) and The Christ School headed the list of Edgewater feeder schools. Out on the course itself, Mark Irons was the race winner (and first Eagle finisher), followed by Oisa Aldrich and Edmond Hook. Haley Beam was the first female Eagle finisher. The PTSA thanks everyone who supported the Eagle Flight 5K event, including all participants, volunteers, in-kind donors, and corporate sponsors (shown below). Special thanks go to Florida Hospital for their generous event sponsorship of $5,000.

EHS Testing Calendar
We are approaching the height of testing season here at Edgewater. Between FCAT, End of Course, Advanced Placement, and SAT/ACT Exams, almost every Eagle will participate in some form of standardized testing at some point this spring. The calendar above lists the current schedule of testing for the next few months. For some tests, such as the End of Course Exam, a full week is reserved, but the testing will actually occur over a one- or two-day period which has not yet been finalized. Although testing is important, it should not be a source of anxiety. Students should be sure to get a good night’s rest and breakfast before arriving on time for test day, but they should not worry and just do their best.

From the Desk of the Athletic Director
Welcome, Coach Jed Kennedy! I am pleased to announce that this past February we had the opportunity to hire a new head football coach. Coach Kennedy and his family will be moving to Orlando from Wisconsin to become Eagles! Coach Kennedy was a State Champion and Wisconsin Coach of the Year in 2011 while he was at Bradford High School in Kenosha, WI. We are looking forward to watching him build our football program and return Edgewater High School back to glory! You can find the video of my interview with Coach Kennedy on the Orlando Sentinel’s Varsity website under the football tab. Are you on Twitter? The EHS Athletic Department is now actively tweeting! You can follow us @ GoEHSEagles. Home games and athletic department information is updated almost daily. Who’s ready to Golf? The 3rd Annual Edgewater Athletics Golf Tournament is fast approaching! The event will be held on Friday, April 26th at Dubsdread Golf Course and The Tap Room. Come join us for a beautiful day of golfing and connecting with other EHS supporters. Shotgun start is at 1pm, with lunch and silent auction to follow. Foursomes with lunch are $440; Individual Golfers are $125. Sponsorships are available as well. Every team needs to register either one foursome or two hole sponsorships to help with operational costs for the athletic department. If you’re interested in registering to support a team, please email valerie.miyares@ocps.net or at extension 606-4906 for more information. 100% of your donation goes back to the Athletic Department and is tax-deductible! Spring Football is just around the corner, with practice starting May 1. The Spring Game for 2013 will be held at West Orange HS on Friday, May 24, and the Fall 2013 schedule will be available online soon. Be sure to check it out and mark your calendars for our Friday nights under the lights! Added to this year’s regular schedule are two old rivalries that have been revived: Bishop Moore and Evans. We are looking forward to an exciting season this coming fall! On May 30th, we will host the EHS Athletic Department Open House and Physical Night. Orlando Orthopedic Center and their doctors will be on campus from 5:30 PM to 7:00 p.m. The cost is $20 and all money collected goes directly back to Edgewater. OCPS physical packets will be available as well. This will be a great opportunity for all student-athletes to have your paperwork completed, signed, approved and on file for next school year. At 7:15 p.m., an overview of Edgewater Athletics and eligibility requirements will be presented for all current and incoming EHS students in the Auditoriums. After the presentation, there will be a brief opportunity to meet the coaches in the cafeteria and ask about their program(s). The Red and White Society is an annual giving level program to benefit the athletic department. More information is available on the EHS website. If you’re interested in advertising or attending events at Edgewater, this is a great opportunity to get the most out of your donation. Please call or email me for more information. Thank you to Edgewater parents Bradley Watkins and Brian Hogan for being our inaugural Red and White Society Members! Winter Sports Roundup
By Valerie Miyares, EHS Athletic Director On Saturday, February 26, our Women’s Basketball Team completed the historic task of winning back-to-back State Championships! The Lady Eagles finished their season 26-6. Senior Trimaine McCullough was a McDonald’s All-American Nominee. Trimaine was also named as the Under Armour Outstanding Player of the Game for Edgewater, which defeated Choctawatchee 50-49 in the state championship game. Trimaine will join the University of South Florida’s women’s basketball team next fall. Our Men’s Basketball Team also excelled, finishing as Regional Runner-Up in February after an exciting game and tough loss to Gainesville High School in the regional final. Our Eagles will graduate 8 seniors this year, and it’s been a pleasure to watch each of them grow into wonderful young men and very talented players. For the 2013-14 season, the team has been invited to play in St. Louis for winter break. Our Competition Cheer Squad finished 4th in the “Small Co-Ed” Division at States in February, narrowly missing for the finals by just a few tenths of a point. I am very proud of our cheer squad and coaches for having such a successful season. Don’t forget that our cheer squad will be putting together the 2013 football program soon and will be looking for advertisers! Also in February, two members of our Wrestling Team - Jordan Mainer and Jack Bales - competed at States. Both young men won their first two rounds and advanced to become one of the top six wrestlers in their respective weight classes. Both Jordan and Jack are juniors this year and will be looking to advance even further in the state tournament next year. Congratulations to our wrestling program and coaches for another successful year! Women’s Soccer advanced past the first round of the playoffs for the first time in four years. Head Coach Chuck Green and his staff have vastly changed the culture of and expectations for this program, making our girls work hard and understand true soccer fundamentals. Chandler Rich will be signing a scholarship with Warner College in Lakeland to continue her soccer career beyond EHS. Congratulations, Chandler! Men’s Soccer lost in the district semifinal game this year, with a number of players earning individual honors. Jay Nisbett and Jay Bywater were both selected for the Orange County/Seminole County All-Star Game. We are also hopeful that two more of our players, Connor Nibert and John Norvelus, will sign soccer scholarships before the school year ends. Women’s Weightlifting had another successful season. Junior Maryah Sullivan won the Sub-Sectional Meet in the 129 pound weight class. She then advanced to the Sectional Meet, where she placed 5th overall. Congratulations to all of these Eagles for a great season!
By Anita Tezanos-Mishler This year the National Honor Society, Helen M. Torrance Chapter, started the year with 95 members and inducted another 92 in early December. We have five committees, with each officer in charge of a committee: • The Spirit Committee, chaired by President Sarah Courson, cheers on underappreciated teams and activities. • The Green-Up Committee, chaired by Vice President Ryan Pearl, have completed clean-ups of the stadium after football games as well as on Orange Blossom Trail for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; they have also collected recycled and gently used shoes for the Sole Mates fundraiser. • The committee chaired by Historian Taylor Clauss has collected gently used, brandname clothing for the Eagle Exchange, which provides clothing to fellow Eagles in need), and helped feed the homeless of Orlando at the Coalition for the Homeless. They plan to assist with research for the American Heart Association. • The committee chaired by Destinee Wheeler has been very active at the local Ronald McDonald house: making brunch for the families of children there, assembling new-mom packages and comfort kits, and launching a campaign at EHS to collect pop tabs as a fundraiser. (Destinee has been named the recipient of the MLK Humanitarian Award.) • The Tutoring Committee, chaired by Treasurer Allison Karaus, tutors students in math twice a week after school.

Chamber Orchestra Update
By Doreen Johnson Spring is a very busy time for the EHS Orchestra. We have just finished MPA, and I am proud to report that all our performers did very well. The Orchestra will next be playing for the Friends of the Edgewater Foundation event on Saturday, April 6. Our spring concert, “A Night Out”, is set for Monday, May 13, at 7 pm in the EHS auditorium. Students will be playing music from movies and musicals. Finally, they will play for the seniors’ Baccalaureate Ceremony on Wednesday, May 22. The Orchestra will be selling candy bars during the last two weeks of April as a fundraiser. This helps us to get the things done that we need to do and pay for items that we need. So if you have hankerings for chocolate, please see one of our students and sup/port your EHS Orchestra!
