Handling stress the RIGHT WAY Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life. A little stress can heighten your senses and motivate you, but too much can be harmful to your health. Parents can play an important role in helping your child manage stress. Suggestions for Dealing with Stress • Break big projects into small tasks. • Schedule time for fun and relaxation each day. • Understand that you cannot control everything, be flexible, and mistakes or challenges can be viewed as an opportunity to learn. • Exercise, establish smart eating habits, and get a good night’s sleep. • Keep your home, book bag, binders, room, and locker clean and organized. Clutter can create stress. • Have someone you can talk to when you are stressed: a parent, teacher, friend, pastor, or school counselor. Keep lines of communication open. • Surround yourself with positive people. Recognize the Signs of Stress • Anger • Anxiety • Changes in eating • Difficulty sleeping • Forgetfulness • Feeling powerless • Irritability • Lack of energy • Poor concentration • Sadness • Upset stomach • Worrying too much


Stress Relief Techniques • Take FIVE deep breaths • Stretch • Picture a relaxing place, such as a beach • Think positively. Say things like: “I can do it”, “It’ll be fun learning something new”, and “I can be a success”. • Take a walk outside
