‘Eagles Nest’ March 2020 Published Five Times Per Year Palm Beach County Public Schools Independence Middle School 4001 Greenway Drive Jupiter, FL 33458 Issue # 2

March 2020

Principal’s Message There were numerous accomplishments recently at IMS. Our phenomenal IMS Band teachers, Mrs. Chris Murray and Mr. Manny Camacho hosted a Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction. The proceeds benefited the IMS Band Program. The Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble performed beautifully for their Music Performance Assessment and demonstrated why music education is important at IMS. These talented Eagles captivated audiences with exceptional instrumental performances. Special thanks and congratulations to our SciQuest teacher Mrs. Melissa Kazakavage, who sponsors our Robotic team. Our team, better known as “The Puzzlers”, won first place at the First Lego Robotic League. After a very long day of competition, the Robotics Team “wowed” the judges with their problem-solving ability. The judges went so far as to compare them to high school teams. This means the team will be attending the regionals and are Global Innovation Award Nominees. Congratulations to “The Puzzlers” and Coach “Kaz”! Our IMS Art Department has some talented Eagles as well. Several were recognized by having artwork displayed at the Norton Museum of Art. The artwork was selected by the museum for the Youth “Crafting Identity” Exhibition. Also, two of our amazing young artists were selected as finalists in this year’s 2020 ArtiGras Youth Art Competition. The theme was “Dive Deep into the Coral Reefs” and their work was amazing! We are so very proud of the accomplishments of our Eagles, the commitment of our teachers, and appreciate the support given by our IMS Community. At IMS, we are “Preparing our Eagles to SOAR into the future!” Eric Lundman Principal

Reading Counts at IMS

The Book Club

The Book Club students read the Sunshine State Young Readers books and recently competed in the district’s Battle of the Books competition. The teams outshined several other middle schools in the district scoring well above the district’s average! Way to go Eagles!

The top two Reading Counts point earners from every Language Arts and Intensive Reading Classes with a 70 % or higher quiz average attended a reward Pizza Party in the Media Center. They enjoyed pizza, chips, cookies, soda and had a chance to win some great prizes from the raffle! A special recognition goes to the following top point earners in their grade level. They each walked away with a sweet $25.00 Visa gift card! • 6th grader Anna Pegler with 533 points • 7th grader Gargi Ojha with 289 points • 8th grader Joelle Carmel with 454 points There will be another Reading Counts Pizza Party in May for the top two RC Point earners from each Language Arts and Intensive Reading class. So, encourage your child to read!

Social Studies Academic Games Results

IMS Holds School-Wide AntiBully Reading Initiative The Revealers Doug Wilhelm All students and staff at Independence Middle began reading the anti-bully themed book, The Revealers by Doug Wilhelm as a kick off activity to Literacy Week last January. IMS student Katherine says that the book, “Teaches you how to deal with bullies and to choose your friends wisely.” IMS student Joelle added, “I am enjoying the book and particularly like the Anne Frank chapter. It has a great message and we are learning about Anne Frank in Language Arts.”

Mrs. Igo would like to congratulate her Social Studies team for doing a great job in the Palm Beach County Academic Games League competition. The 7th & 8th grade IMS team maintained 5th place in overall school achievement among 15 middle schools. The team members were: • 7th grade: Gauhar Bakhytzhan, Matt Harrisburg, Gargi Ojha, Avery Walker, Libbie Young • 8th grade: Cameron King, Jack Sergent A special congrats goes to Cameron King for successfully winning 2nd place in the individual category. Cameron will move on to the state tournament level in Social Studies and all 3 subject categories on the national level. These kids worked hard to compete among 115 other students in the district. Thank you again to all for an awesome showing of IMS talent, knowledge and dedication!

Medical Science Academy News

The Medical Academy and Mrs. Reichard would like to send a thank you to Palm Beach County Special Operations Rescue 19! Lieutenant Tony Wallace and Paramedic Austin Rudy along with EMT Cesar Sanchez demonstrated life-saving equipment and skills to the 7th Grade medical students. These students have been studying and practicing pulse and respiration in the classroom and enjoyed learning how the rescue team really puts the skills to use. This year they were able to complete skills testing using our own classroom simulator named “Juno”. Juno can simulate various heart and lung conditions and the students can find the sights and sounds just like a real patient! The 6th graders completed a week training in “Life Skills” with our guest Amanda Aiken from the Hanley Foundation. Their post-test scores showed a 26% increase in knowledge related to the consequences from smoking, vaping, underage drinking and drug use! Thank you Amanda for showcasing your “Prevention Specialist” skills! The medical high school credit students are applying their workplace skills by completing their resumes and seeking job-shadowing and volunteer opportunities around our community in areas ranging from veterinary science to sports medicine. Most of the class has chosen to remain in medical science and are waiting to be accepted into a medical high school academy program! That means four more years of medical science and a great way to prepare for your future medical careers.

Travelers explored Quito and visited the Intinan Museum, the site at which the Equator runs through. Flew to San Cristóbal where our local guides met us and our Galapagos adventure began. Took boats to 5 different islands in the Galapagos. The guides took us snorkeling and hiking so we can see the famous animals and marine life that the Galapagos is known for. We even visited the Charles Darwin Research Center. After returning back to mainland Ecuador, we took a trip up the Andes Mountain to Otavolo. * Spring Break 2019, Mrs. Richichi, took 43 travelers to Scotland and England to learn about the Scottish and British culture, history, food, and current events. Travelers covered an array of towns, such as Edinburgh, Gretna Green, Yorkshire, Warwick, Stratford, Oxford, and London. We stopped at the famous Windsor Castle when the Royal Majesty was there. We saw the famous Stonehenge and the original Manga Carta in Salisbury. Of course a trip to Scotland would not be complete if the travelers didn’t try the famous Irn-Bru. Our Tour Guide Adam stayed with us the full duration of our trip as he showed us around Scotland and England.
