MWMS – Moby Max

Meadow Woods Middle School has implemented a Web-based curriculum called Moby Max. Moby Max’s adaptive curriculum creates a unique, individualized education plan for each student, allowing gifted students to progress as quickly as they like while simultaneously ensuring that remedial students get the extra instruction they need. MobyMax’s comprehensive learning system automatically diagnoses areas of weakness, assigns targeted lessons to improve those areas, and tracks progress as a student masters the skills. Our Math teachers are currently using Moby Max in their classes. In order to promote its use, they decided to participate in the Moby Max’s 119 Prize Math contest that started on November 8th, 2013 and ended January 10th, 2014. The contest motivated our students and also created an engaging learning environment. Our students were excited and worked very hard during the eight-week contest. Meadow Woods Middle believes it is important to let our students know how much they’ve achieved. Because we recognize their progress and achievements, we are proud to congratulate our top 119 students. Go stallions! MWMS Summer Reading List

To many, summer break from school often means a break from reading. This can seriously delay academic achievement once a student returns to school. There’s a solid link between the amount of independent reading children do and their success in school. Research shows that students who never open a book during the summer often fall behind in reading. It’s called the “notorious summer slide” – while students who do read maintain or improve their reading and learning skills. Summer reading helps build fluency, background knowledge and vocabulary. This summer MWMS students are required to read at least one (1) of the following books. The books that are chosen must be ones students have not read. We highly encourage our students to take notes on the books they read so they can remember the important concepts and characters. When school resumes, students will be required to pass an Accelerated Reading (AR) test on the summer books they read and a grade will be given in their Language Arts classes. Reading one (1) book is the minimum requirement. We encourage our students to Read, Read, and then Read some more! For Students Entering 6th Grade in August, 2014: 1. *Homesick by Kate Klise 2. *The Ghost of Graylock by Dan Poblocki 3. The False Prince by Jennifer Nelson 4. Chomp by Carl Hiaasen 5. One For The Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt 6. Close To Famous by Joan Bauer For Students Entering 7th Grade in August, 2014: 1. *The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine 2. *I, Emma Freke by Elizabeth Atkinson 3. The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan 4. Wonder by R. J. Palacio 5. When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead 6. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak For Students Entering 8th Grade in August, 2014: 1. *Variant by Robison Wells 2. *Far Far Away by Tom McNeal 3. Selection by Kiera Cass 4. That Was Then, This Is Now by S. E. Hinton 5. Does My Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah 6. The Alchemyst by Michael Scott • •

These books are on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award 2013-14 list. See our school website for short excerpts from each book to help you: http://www.mwms.ocps.net

CASPIANS – 6th,7th,8th

The Caspians enjoyed their year-ending CBI trip to Dr. Phillips Park on May 16th. Students enjoyed a cookout with hot dogs and some even got soaked in the splash park. The Caspian team held their awards day on Wednesday, May 21st. All students were recognized for their unique contributions and growth for the 2013-14 school year. Students of the Year were Alex Job, Alexis Pimentel, Angel Carattini, Edgar Ramos, and Ismael Torres.

Members of the Beginning Chorus performed a medley from the musical Wicked at the Spring Concert on May 20th. Students flexed their acting muscles with a scene from the musical. Zoe Mejia played the role of Glenda and Megan Yip played the role of Elphaba. Tiara Sherman ended the first half with a beautiful interpretive dance to the song Let It Go from Frozen.

Intermediate and Advanced Chorus at the Spring Concert performed a medley from the musical Les Miserable. Members of the Intermediate and Advanced chorus dressed in character with ripped clothes and smudged faces. There were several stunning solos by Meadow Woods students. A good time was had by all!!

COLTS – 6th

As this school year comes to a close, Mrs. Longo wants to encourage all students to keep reading over the summer to reinforce the skills that they worked on this year. Reading often over the summer will ensure that students are ready to tackle the new content they will see in 7th grade. Each student received a copy of the summer reading list, so make sure to read, read and read some more! Mrs. Longo would like to congratulate the following students who had outstanding achievement on their AR goals this year: Matheus Schunk, Elizabeth Choy, Kaylin Rackley, Daisy Merino, Denazah Polingo, Serean Suleiman and Maria Rivera. In addition, the Colts have been doing great in Life Science for the last quarter and are looking to finish out the year strong! Students discussed Charles Darwin and the theory of Evolution before FCAT testing started. Colts learned about Ecology and how organisms interact with each other and their environments after FCAT testing finished up. We are finishing out the year talking about how plants make their food and exploring why we need oxygen in order to survive. The Colts have been doing an excellent job in Life Science this year and can look forward to learning about the planets and solar systems next year! Ms. Sacacian’s students have spent the last quarter of the school year focusing on the glorious culture and traditions of the Ancient Romans. Ms. Sacacian’s students had a great time discovering the similarities and differences between daily life in ancient Rome and everyday life today. Additionally, they have studied how the ancient Roman form of government has influenced the creation of our country’s government. This is just a preview to what they will see next year in Civics! Unfortunately, just like the Roman Empire all things must come to an end. On behalf of all the Colts teachers, we hope you all have a restful and safe summer break!

MAVERICKS – 6TH

In Math we reviwed basic concepts like multiplying and dividing decimals and fractions. Then the class integrated these skills with the concept of percent. Finally, we reviewed skills and concepts about algebraic equations. The class discussed a study guide to get the students ready for the 4th quarter Math exam. These last nine weeks, Mr. Kennedy’s World History classes wrapped up the school year with a comprehensive study of Ancient Rome. The 4th Quarter has finished quickly in Mr. Goltzman’s Life Science classes. We began the quarter looking into the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection. This led us through the student’s taking the FCAT in April. We then began discussing Ecology and interactions between organisms. This included the students creating their own food webs to show energy transfer. Finally, we covered photosynthesis and cellular respirations along with the carbon cycle. We then ended the year by covering Human Sexuality. The Mavericks Team wishes everyone to have a fun and safe summer!!!

PALOMINOS – 6th

The Palominos Language Arts classes began the fourth quarter concentrating on skills for developing vocabulary. We reviewed context clues and strategies for detecting them and using them to decipher meaning. We also went within words, to breaking them apart into prefixes, roots, and suffixes to help find their meaning. Later, we concentrated on using imagery while reading, and specifically with vocabulary. For the end of the quarter, and the 2013-14 school year, we are focusing on a very important research project. Students were taught how to conduct internet research and sort through multiple sources for reliable information, as well as how to cite those sources and avoid plagiarism. They were then asked to choose an everyday object to research, so they could then create a report and presentation for their class about how this object has changed over time. Students will be giving final presentations on their objects for the last 3 days of school, and the research project as a whole will take the place of their Language Arts final exams. During this quarter Science students learned about the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. They got to understand how some organisms like plants can make their own food and oxygen by using the energy from the sun in the process of photosynthesis and how some other organisms like animals use these products to make energy to do their basic functions in the process of cellular respiration. They also learned about how carbon is transformed and reused in the carbon cycle. Also, they were able to understand that energy and matter are not created or destroyed but transformed. Last, they will be learning about human sexuality, anatomy of the reproductive system, conception, and sexual transmitted diseases (STD’s).

CLYDESDALES – 8th

I am very proud of the work you’ve accomplished this year. I wish you the best in all your future endeavors. (Ms. Nemcik) During the 4th quarter in Pre-Algebra, we reviewed many of the previously taught skills to prepare for high school and the final exam. Our Students also wrote and performed math songs to instrumental music, which was a delight. Mrs. Nunnally is extremely proud of each and every one of you. She sincerely wish you the best of luck with which ever path you take in life. It has been a pleasure! During the 4th quarter Language Arts has been exploring humor in various texts. We read poetry, nonfiction, and fiction; saw some humorous clips from movies; and ended our time together acting out scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It has been a pleasure working with you and your kids this year. (Ms. Regan) Mrs. Anderson is extremely proud of all the hard work each and every one of you put forth this school year. Throughout this year you have learned many skills that will be essential in high school and your future. It has been a blessing working with you this year and she looks forward to seeing what the future holds for you. In the words of Dr. Seuss… CONGRATULATIONS! Today Is Your Day You’re Off To Great Places You’re Off and Away You Have Brains In Your Head You Have Feet In Your Shoes You can Steer Yourself Any Directions You Choose You’re On Your Own And You Know What You Know And YOU Are The One Who’ll Decide Where To Go.

KNIGHTS – 7th

During the 4th 9 weeks in Mr. McCurdy’s class, students have been exploring concepts heat transfer between the various Earth spheres, atmospheric layers and effects and the water cycle. Students have also evaluated how solar energy affects weather and global weather patterns. Also the differences and components of climate and weather have been explored. Students wrapped up the end of the 9 weeks learning about human sexuality. In Ms. Moore’s class, FCAT is over and we can take a sigh of relief, but as we come to the end of the year, we are still going strong in math. We are working on solving multi-step equations and inequalities, as well as analyzing data. Ms. Becker’s class had an amazing end to the year! After working hard for FCAT, students were able to move on to some fun activities. For their end-of-the-year project, they had to memorize a monologue. Then they were able to perform it for the class. It was great to see all the hard work and memorization pay off. Remember to read this summer! Parents, check out your local Orange County Public Library location! They have great books, magazines, games, and activities that whole family can enjoy. They also have the books on our MWMS Summer Reading list!! Finally, Ms. Dawson’s Civics students explored topics in Economics. They learned all about personal finance along with saving and investing. Students were also given the task of choosing a career and setting up a personal monthly budget. In addition, they were given insight as to how businesses are organized. All students ended the quarter with a project that required them to create a business plan.
