3 The Diary of Anne Frank
Sequoyah High School’s drama departments fall production was, “Diary of Anne Frank.”
The play, based on Anne Frank’s “Diary of a Young Girl,” brings to life scenes from a Jewish girl’s diary while she and her family lived in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The show is a significant one for director Gerald Parker, who wanted to put it on before he retires next year. “We had done this show about 10 years ago, I had a wonderful experience doing it, and I always said I would like to bring it back one more time,” he said. Parker chose the play in part because he felt it relevant to current events, he said. “In our national culture lately, there’s a lot of controversy about tolerance and intolerance. The message that Anne Frank’s story brings says a lot about that, and I thought that would be a good message for our current time,” the director said. “It’s a very powerful play.” The cast and crew have been working on the show nearly all semester, with rehearsals beginning in early August. Parker said they have devoted a lot of their time to the project, including meeting outside of school and rehearsals. “We’ve done a lot of comedy, and they were eager to sink their teeth into a drama,” he said. “They’ve worked very hard; they learned their lines very fast. They’ve been very dedicated.”
Senior Presley Coley plays the title role in ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ at Sequoyah High School.
The play is different than most in that all the scenes take place in the same house, and nearly every character is always there at once. “One of the things that makes this show really difficult is the entire cast is on stage the entire show. Even when they’re not in dialogue, they have to remain in character,” Parker said. “They’re on stage the entire time. They don’t get a break, except intermission.” Senior Presley Coley plays the title role, and her family members are junior Jace Nichols as Anne’s father Otto Frank, sophomore Paige Ussery as Margot Frank and senior Sophia Clark as Edith Frank. Sophomore Randy Miller and senior Brisa Mendez are Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, and sophomore Austin Ridley is cast as their son Peter. Senior Amelia Westmoreland plays Meip Gies and junior Zane Durham is cast as Mr. Dussel. The role of Mr. Kraler is split between senior Blake Galloway and sophomore Jacob Jenkins. The play has two student directors, Grace Sinclair and Sam Burturla, and two stage managers, Olivia Adams and Kristin Kimberly. After the performance, the cast and crew will develop a condensed version of the play to use in one-act competition with other high school theater groups. A Georgia High School Association regional one-act competition will be held at 8:30 Oct. 27 at Sequoyah with eight schools participating, including Sequoyah, Creekview High School and River Ridge High School.
Presley Coley, Paige Ussery, Jace Nichols and Sophia Clark are the Frank family in ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’
