Today, the Accademia Italiana represents a solid structure in an international panorama that has changed completely. Study at the Accademia Italiana: a wide range of advantages Studying at the Accademia Italiana means participating in an intense academic experience at one of the most prestigious Institutes of fashion and design in the world. The excellence of its academic programs is recognized both in Italy, by the Ministry of Education (MIUR: Ministero dell’Istruzione, Università e Ricerca), and abroad by prestigious foreign Institutes and universities. The Italian National Agency for Evaluation of the University and Research Systems (ANVUR) documented the particular attention given by the Institute to the “methodological and design aspects both in the area of research and in new technologies”. Approximately 50% of the student body at the Accademia Italiana in Florence comes from countries other than Italy while at the Rome campus the number is around 25%. This international environment offers the opportunity for exchange between the various cultures allowing for the development of new ideas. Recently the Accademia Italiana has restructured its study programs introducing some modifications that increase the operative flexibility to better respond to the necessities of Italian and international students with respect to the ever-changing needs of the creative professions and the contemporary world.

The Bachelor’s Degree programs and the professional programs at the Accademia Italiana in Florence and in Rome are held according to the following academic calendar:

For the 3-year bachelor’s degree programs there are three different study plans: first level academic diploma course accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR); international bachelor’s degree program with degree awarded by Nottingham Trent University (UK); integrated programs leading to double academic award (1st level academic diploma recognized by MIUR and UK bachelor’s degree). Both study plans allow students, upon successful completion of the program, to continue in the Masters programs offered by the Institute in Florence. Professional courses that last one or two years, short courses, summer courses and Italian language and culture courses are also available. All programs offered at the Accademia Italiana are taught bilingually (Italian/ English) allowing both Italian and foreign students to attend.

As for every object, a garment is born from an idea that is developed through a project. Fundamental for the future fashion designer are the evolution of creative capacities which will enable the expression of a personal style as well as the technical knowledge including that which relates to the ever greater possibilities offered by the latest computer systems. The program offered by the Accademia Italiana includes both aspects and the student, while elaborating his own personal style, acquires that knowledge which is indispensable for the undertaking of his exciting profession. During the course of this program various arguments will be discussed, including history, textiles and economics, in particular the study and analysis of the marketplace. An important part of the training is directed towards the actual production of garments, which will be created by the students in the wellequipped laboratories of the Accademia, in such a way that the creative phase and the design phase may always be a test of the wearability. All types of clothing are discussed, from the casual style to elegant, from classic to avant-garde fashion. The school promotes the works of the students through the participation in fashion shows, manifestations and exhibits of international character, thus favoring the introduction of new talent into the market. During the course of study, there are numerous occasions for encounters with experts and important designers, guided visits and contacts with industries and ateliers. The student thus enters into the magical world of fashion, supported by his own creative energy and by a high professional qualification. After having received the design degree, the student may attend the master programs.

Design, materials and colors The stylistic research of the students of the Accademia Italiana moves in various directions, following the three fundamental variables: design, materials and color. The success of the style of the clothing collection will depend, in fact, on these three elements. The students also learn to work from a market point of view, developing those particular capabilities typical of great fashion designers: the sensibility towards the signals that anticipate fashion, picking up new stimuli and translating the phenomenon of fashion, proposing thus on the catwalk those ideas that will create the trends of the future. Artistic preparation goes step by step with technical preparation. Garments designed are examined on the basis of the concrete possibility to create them. This process is not designed to take space away from the creativity, but to direct that creativity into a practical vision of each idea. In fact, once the garment has been designed it will actually be produced in the laboratories of the Accademia, modifying the works and aiming for the technical perfection of the element designed. Description of courses In addition to creative capacities ever more vast and articulated competence is required of the designer in today’s world. The complexities of the society and of the market, the growing expectations on the part of industries and of the users in general, the emergence of environmental problems and the decisive role played by the media make the designer a professional figure in continual transformation. Through the course in Design (Interior and Product Design) the Accademia Italiana makes these changes, training professionals capable of responding to these new requirements. Design concerns objects of general use, furniture designed for various destinations and the design of interiors in general. Both individual projects and industrial design for series production are discussed. Beginning in the second year the student may direct his interests towards a specific professional area. The student learns to elaborate projects for offices and shops, domestic spaces for various kinds of public and private spaces. The study of technical drawing is supported by the use of the computer (practical lessons in various CAD programs). In addition to the use of traditional materials, much attention is given to the use of new materials and to the emergence of environmentally valid materials, thus encouraging experience in the new field of “environmental design” . Another relevant aspect of the course is that relative to the theory subjects which include historic aspects, the study of marketing and technology of materials. A series of collateral activities complete the program, furnishing experience and occasions for cultural and professional growth. The best works created by the students (projects, models, prototypes) will be exhibited in international shows (for example, the participation in the Milan Design Exhibition), and the students will have the opportunity to attend specialized fairs and visit industries and shows in the design field. During the course there will be numerous encounters with professionals from the world of design, art and culture. The entire program is geared towards the training of designers who will be able to compete successfully at an international level thanks to their knowledge and creativity. The Introduction of Young Designers in the Working Place Today the designer operates at an international level managing often very different kinds of situations. For this reason the designer in today’s world must have great flexibility and competence, along with the capacity to operate in various fields. Knowing the companies with whom one comes into contact is of fundamental importance in order to operate in sync and arrive at the goals set. The Accademia Italiana is a school open to the outside world, always in contact with the production reality. Entrance into the working world for those who have completed the entire program of studies is made easier by a series of experiences and contacts matured during the learning period. In the last years the students and the instructors of the Accademia Italiana have done numerous projects in cooperation with important companies operating in various fields. These projects have involved many students who have had the opportunity to participate in workshops, internships, and international design contests, often receiving important prizes and recognitions. Each year the school proposes the best works of the students in an exhibition where industries and professionals are invited, thus creating a launching pad for the new graduates. Among the most recent encounters with prestigious names and companies in the design world were Andrea Branzi, Alessandro Mendini, Riccardo Dalisi, Cristina Morozzi, Cini Boeri, Denis Santachiara and the industrialist Alberto Alessi, Poltrona Frau, Kartell and many others.

This program aims at the training of a professional figure marked by the flexibility with which he is able to cover different roles within the profession. At the same time the course aims at providing structured knowledge in an organic and profound manner. The program for Graphic Design and Visual Communications is innovative exactly for this specificity. Today the world of communications is in continual evolution, the changes are so rapid that a great operative diversification and a global knowledge of the instruments and the techniques is required of the young professional. For this reason the subjects covered in the study program cover a wide range of arguments that were once considered separate areas. This does not create a lack of specialization, on the contrary it opens the doors to new fields of application of visual communications in all the areas of interest with which the future professional will enter into contact (traditional publishing; electronic publishing and internet, advertising, fashion, television and mass-media, photography, graphics and artistic illustration, communications within a company). The students at the Accademia Italiana will have the use of the well-equipped laboratories both for the traditional techniques (visual arts laboratory) and for computer design (internet laboratory and computer design laboratories). The software used for graphic design, 3-D animation, layout and web design is constantly updated to insure that the students are keeping up with the times in this fast-moving profession. The professors and the laboratory technicians follow the students step by step, constantly verifying their progress on an individual level.

Becoming a graphic designer: the reasons for a professional choice Graphic design is a combination of various elements: communications, commerce and art. There are many fields of application: advertising, publishing, packaging, digital design, web design, interior design, fashion, illustration, photography. For a young designer it is certainly stimulating to undertake such a vast area of interests. For this reason an ever-increasing number of creative young students choose this profession. The search for a school that responds to the expectations can often be difficult as the offers are vast and unfortunately, often lead to delusions as they are based on improvisation. The study program in “Photography” (and New Media) is a university level artistic training course and thus is characterized both by subjects that aim at the acquisition of a solid cultural preparation, as well as those practical experiences directed to the application of knowledge in various fields, from fashion to still-life, from photo-journalism to photography in and out of the studio. The traditional photographic techniques, dark room experience and digital photography will be done side by side with the study of computer elaborated images and specific notions of graphic design and visual communication. The result is a professional figure able to operate on a global level, who has acquired the knowledge necessary to work on the most integrated and complex projects, developing specific techniques in various areas: fashion, publicity, journalism, sport and publishing. The courses are taught by professionals in the field. Students will use the Accademia Italiana laboratories working individually and in groups. During the three-year program students are invited to participate in exhibitions, conferences and workshops. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged involving the departments of fashion and design. The philosophy that lies at the heart of this program is that of experimentation on a global level of visual language and techniques to propose in the professional world not only as photographers but as creative artists who are able to communicate with images and who can give personalized responses to the necessities of a society and a market in continual evolution.

An experimental approach

Speaking to the students of the Accademia Italiana during a recent encounter organized by the school, the internationally famous photographer, Oliviero Toscani, gave this advice: “Don’t be afraid to have doubts and of being insecure because often it is precisely the moment of major uncertainty that corresponds to the moment of maximum creativity.” This declaration can, in part, express the concept that is at the basis of the teaching philosophy proposed. In fact, the best ideas are born out of unceasing research, resulting by turning sure things upside down and taking the product and heading towards a process of experimentation. For this reason the school, in addition to giving the student the technical and cultural basis, promotes the birth of new stimuli, even unusual ones that will become specific research projects. The school represents a moment of growth, but it is each individual student who will make the final choices on the basis of each one’s own affinities. The “maximum creative freedom” must always be accompanied by strong technical knowledge. This knowledge must include, together with photography, other areas pertinent to art, design and culture.

Description of the course

This program is the only one of its kind in Italy. It is, in fact, the first study program proposed at a university level that unites cultural content to manual activities and is finalized in the development of a professional figure that is highly specialized and able to operate at an international level. The course unites the typical experience of the artisan workshop characterized by the acquisition of the manual dexterity of master goldsmiths, together with in depth investigation of the theory and cultural elements. At the end of the three-year period of studies the student is able to manage the creative process being conscious of the choices made. After the first period of studies, concentrated in the preparation of the basics with theory and artistic subjects that tend to furnish those determining foundations in the preparation of a designer, from the second semester onwards the student is ever more in contact with the materials, the techniques and the technologies typical to the disciplines linked to jewelry design and goldsmithing. For this reason great importance is given to the practical exercises (construction, micro-modelling in wax, embossing and engraving, setting, micro-press fusion and casting). The works done by the students are born from the advanced stylistic research supported by the analysis of the international market, the study of the materials and the study of new trends. The maximum creative freedom is allowed, backed up by solid technical and cultural bases. Each student is followed, step by step by professionals of vast experience. For each project proposed all possible variations are analyzed and the choices made are determined by a creative process derived by the acquired mastery of the instruments, the techniques and the materials. The student thus is able to undertake an ancient craft with a contemporary vision, uniting the use of traditional techniques to the instruments of our times, such as computer design, with a view that includes the strategies of marketing and the evolution of the market.

A profession between art, design and craftmanship The profession of the jewelry designer is closely linked to the artistic sensibility of our time and lies on the borderlines between art, design and artisan handicraft. To be able to propose fascinating jewels one needs first of all to understand the dreams of our times. The jewelry designer transfers these dreams into his works. A school serves, in addition to transferring the secrets of the trade, also to develop a personal work method developed over three years of studies that derives from the individual sensibility of the student directed at a concrete sphere. Fashion Merchandising > Offered at the AI Florence The intensive Fashion Design Retail program lasts for one year. In this programme, the students will be able to cultivate their natural talents and learn how to design and create collections having an international flavour. There are no particular requisites necessary for admission to this programme, to which a brief preparatory course is also offered. All the international students have to be able to speak and write in English or in Italian. The program is delivered by specialists in the field of fashion and is directed to all those who would like to initiate a career in Fashion Design. The program that includes various subjects from fashion illustration to creative design, from draping to pattern making and to computer graphics is aimed at stimulating the students’ creativity and to provide them with the necessary instruments with which to transform their dreams and ideas into a professional career. The students will be able to communicate the results of their studying through their projects and collections, thereby fully expressing their own ideas and creative capacities. The drawing and painting program is offered in Florence, city of art par excellence. With this thought in mind the Accademia Italiana has created a program that includes the participation in artistic experiences that are exciting and stimulating. The course of drawing and painting encourages the artistic development of the students in various directions, individuality and expressiveness evolve through the control of the drawing technique, the construction of the composition structures, in the use of the possibilities offered by colors and the search for new artistic languages. The acquisition and mastery of the expressive means is the very foundation of art as the meanings, the feelings, the reflections, the ideas take form and become concrete in the work of art. For this reason the program includes the study of various techniques of drawing and painting, treating both the figurative trends (still life, nude drawing) as well as the abstract. The student finds stimulus for his work in confrontations with the past. This confrontation is certainly made easier by the possibilities offered, living in Florence, of having at their disposition the masterpieces of the great artists: Michelangelo, Giotto, Botticelli, Ghiberti, Piero della Francesca, Raffaello and many others who have left here testimonials of incredible value. The Accademia Italiana organizes guided visits within the program and study days on the great masters at museums and special collections in Florence. The contact and confrontation with the art of the present day is achieved through encounters with contemporary artists that the students will meet during regular class periods at the Accademia Italiana and through seminars and conferences held by art critics and experts and through exhibits and artistic events in which the students will participate. There are two different ways of participating in the “drawing and painting” program: academic courses and monthly courses. The academic courses are held on a semester basis and offer the possibility to earn a diploma at the end of the basic course (two semesters) and of the advanced course (end of the fourth semester) while monthly courses are offered for those students who cannot attend for long periods of time (a certificate of attendance is awarded at the end of the course). These courses can be taken together with the monthly courses of Italian language and culture for foreigners as the time schedules are compatible.

The Accademia Italiana, with this program, offers the possibility of training in a kind of profession that is ever more sought after on the job market. The window designer is, in fact, a professional figure in today’s world, important in the most evolved societies. The window designer must possess creativity, specific technical requirements, sensitivity to color and to form, capability in the use of instruments of communication and the psychology of the image. The course is developed in two academic semesters and gives a complete preparation. The course for window displays is made up of three phases, beginning from the idea and then begins to formulate the project which will be followed by the practical verification. The instructors are all qualified professional who will place their own experience at the student’s disposition, in such a way that the student can quickly assimilate the discipline to be able to make his own way in this profession. The more interesting projects among those elaborated during the program will be produced, designing and decorating real store windows in the center of Florence. At the end of the course each student will have acquired all of the professional knowledge necessary to begin this excellent career.

The Master courses are directed at students who have already completed professional training in the relative field. Students who will be accepted for these courses are those who have already finished the specialization courses at the Accademia Italiana or who have already completed degree studies or received diplomas from other Italian or foreign schools and universities as well as professionals with proven experience in the specific area. The Masters courses begin in October and end in May and include approximately 500 lesson hours. The teaching staff is made up of designers, artists, fashion designers, architects and important experts in the current cultural artistic and economic panorama tied to the world of creativity and design. To request admission to the Masters courses it is necessary, together with the normal enrollment procedures to present the documentation certifying the level of studies, degrees or diplomas obtained and a detailed personal curriculum. An entrance commission, composed of instructors and technicians, will evaluate the applications received and the results will be given as rapidly as possible. The courses are taught in Italian and in English.

Fashion design has always existed in the gray area on the borders of the area tied to pure art. It is certainly merit of fashion designers if the many new styles have such a capillary diffusion. For the fashion designer the deepening of artistic knowledge is fundamental to enable the evaluation of the possible transformations into the fashion field thus translating the intuitions developed through the contact with art into innovative proposals. This course aims to give potential to the creative capacities and the professional promise of the students through contact with designers and industries in the field. The training process is completed by the study of strategies linked to the use of visual communication and use of the media and design of accessories. The participation in exhibits and fashion shows completes the course. This Masters course is directed at those students who have already completed fashion design studies and would like to develop their training working on lines that could blossom into important choices of direction for the professional future.

Configuration of the course The main objective of the Masters program in “Fashion Design” is the acquisition of increased professional capabilities and competence. Fashion is seen as a global system, thus various fields interact – the textiles and the fashion industry, accessories, production and diffusion systems, commercialization and marketing (from print to video, from the more traditional to the more complex systems of “global communication”). For this reason the subjects that cover these aspects are linked by a single thread. We can divide these disciplines into two groups: cultural subjects and technical/practical subjects. Along with these there will be seminars, encounters, visits, participation in events and fashion shows. At the end of the program each student will present a final thesis and will present his or her creations to the public. It will consist in the research of a particular topic and the preparation of a portfolio of collections developed in each aspect, complete with the appropriate technical information for their production. A collection, complete with accessories, will be produced by each student in the laboratories of the Accademia Italiana and will be shown to the public in a fashion show for thousands of invited guests from the fashion industry and the press. Often collections done by the students of the Accademia Italiana are also featured on television programs in Italy and abroad.

Master Interior and Product Design Innovative and Experimental Design (Florence Campus) This Masters course is dedicated to advanced research aimed at innovation in the field of interior and product design. Through the analysis of the new human needs determined by technological development, of new media and of the diffusion of digital technology the student explores new possibilities of design projects focused on innovation. The interior design projects will include living spaces, commercial spaces and urban design, concentrating on the manipulation of spaces in relation to new trends. The product design projects will involve furniture design as well as the design of objects of everyday use that may acquire various values and meanings according to their destinations. We are in a time of great change be it on the level of communication, of physical space or of virtual space that cohabit our homes, our offices, our cities, creating new urban and domestic scenes. The designer faces a double role, on one hand following new technologies while on the other creating friendly spaces where one can find his own identity and his own human role. For this reason today, along side the hi-tech there is the search for the personalization of the object and of the environment with the re-qualification of applied arts and artisan handwork conceived in a contemporary key. The design projects the students produce during this masters program will involve the development of both trends, increasing a global competence oriented towards the resolution of various problems relative to individual and collective use of the product and the environment. The design project will be researched in each aspect: from the concept to the technological choices to the choice of materials and a study of the colors. Another important characteristic of this master: the student develops the perception of the changes that are occurring in the market and in the public’s taste, through the reading and interpretation of the signs and signals that anticipate new trends. The future professional will be able to translate on an operational level and in advance the emerging styles and innovative ideas. The academic offerings at the Accademia Italiana in Florence and in Rome include some short courses (brief or summer courses), courses of Italian language dedicated to the foreign students, and courses that last one or two academic semesters that are structured for the study abroad programs (liberal arts and studio arts)*. Here you will find general information concerning these courses. Department of Italian language and culture The Accademia Italiana is an international school that in addition to accepting students from every region of Italy also accepts foreign students. The department of Italian language and culture has been created within the Accademia Italiana in order to assist the foreign students who will attend the academic programs at the Accademia as well as those whose interests are solely directed to studying the Italian language and who can remain in Florence for a brief period only. The courses that the Accademia Italiana offers are divided into three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced. Each level is developed in one month of lessons covering 80 lesson hours (intensive course). As an alternative students can choose to attend 40 lesson hours in one month. Individual courses are also activated upon request. Students who are complete beginners are advised to attend these courses before undertaking the academic courses or together with the design programs. The basic level provides an approach to the Italian language starting with elementary notions and finishing with the mastering of the main linguistic structures. The intermediate level involves a more in-depth study of the Italian language, vocabulary and grammar enrichment, as well as improving pronunciation. The advanced level focuses particular attention on written composition and the use of Italian in specific situations. Conversation, the use of audiovisuals, the showing of Italian language films followed by discussion, together with an approach to Italian literature are all integral activities at every level of study. The Italian language courses are accompanied by cultural and recreational activities in which both Italian and foreign students participate. The three levels are offered every month of the year except December. These courses can be taken together with other monthly courses, such as Drawing and Painting which is also offered every month except December. During the summer months the language courses can be taken together with the fashion courses.

Summer and short courses in Florence and Rome During the summer months the Accademia Italiana in Florence organizes special courses directed at those who for various reasons cannot attend the regular academic courses. Summer courses are an excellent opportunity for study vacations to experience a period of one or two months in Florence, a city unique in the entire world for the richness of its masterpieces of art as well as to learn the Italian language and improve artistic skills, thus giving potential to their own capabilities and improving their knowledge. Summer courses are held in the months of June, July and August and include the following subjects: Italian language Drawing and Painting Fashion Design (intensive) Fashion Illustration Photography Product design Interior Design Graphic Design Other summer courses may be arranged or inserted into the school program. Those interested may request the current brochure and further details through our information office. The courses of “Italian language” and of “Drawing and Painting” are also offered as short courses (which can be attended for one or more months) during the academic year.
