Athens Research & Technology CEO, John Mitchell posing in the laboratory where over 1500 proteins have been mastered and used to find breakthroughs in medical treatments and technological advancements.

AGE WELL. Live Well.

If we can make our community a little bit better every day, we’re doing something right.
John Mitchell

John Mitchell is an infectiously passionate man. One conversation with him and you feel ready to tackle all the challenges the world has to offer.

From his childhood days in West Virginia to attending West Point and becoming an Army Pilot, Mitchell has been a competitor at every turn, always applying maximum effort to the challenge in front of him.

I loved competing and being the best growing up. West Point was a humbling experience, but made you want to keep working to get better,” Mitchell told me. That same drive to compete and become the best pushes him to make every second of the day count, “before 6:00am each day I want to have 30 things done.”

The military took Mitchell and his family across the globe, with stops in South Korea and Alabama (or as he specified Lower Alabama, better known as “LA”), just to name a few. At every stop, he was enamored with the different cultures and communities that he was momentarily joining. Even still, he never quite found the right place to call home.

When John transitioned from the military to the private sector, his tenacity for solving problems followed. He first ventured into project design and has been helping companies across the medical industry develop and implement different products for over 30 years. More recently, John has been in the “turnaround” business. For the last ten years, John Mitchell has been hired by legacy companies in need of direction and quality leadership to analyze and identify problems, implement solutions, and develop organizational and production systems for sustained success.

After a series of successful turnarounds, including

a recent stint with a company in Atlanta, Mitchell was asked in late 2020 to come in and provide his decades of industry experience and expertise to Athens Research & Technology (ART), a local biotechnology company quietly on the forefront of breakthrough advances in medical research and technology. Mitchell became the CEO of ART in January of 2021.

Athens Research & Technology Inc. has been purifying and mastering human proteins for the biomedical industry since 1986. Researchers worldwide have relied on these proteins to help further biotechnology advances, find major breakthrough treatments, and develop innovative practices for combating inflammation, coronary disease, autoimmune disease, cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, and much more. Just in the last 10 years alone, Athens Research & Technology proteins have been published over 1500 times and across the gamut of global scientific journals.

“We have a worldwide impact because every institution around the world uses these proteins,” John tells me, “we are masters of proteins. At the heart of everything Athens Research & Technology does is three things: people, purpose, and proteins.”

Joining ART nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic provided plenty of challenges for a new CEO. “I didn’t see anyone for 18 months,” Mitchell explained, “so you do a lot of listening to learn and understand what your people need to start building trust.” Mitchell recognizes his team as the cornerstone of their success, “we want to find great people and continue to build up the team we have so they want to stay for the long term.” Mitchell sees this as

a twofold approach, “as a leader, you have to give your team the knowledge and the practice to become a master of their craft, and then the rewards that benefit both the company and the individual.”

From company parties (both socially distanced and now a bit closer) to scavenger hunts and escape room outings, Mitchell and his staff try to organize team outings frequently. One of the recent favorites was a sushi cooking class at Athens Cooks, a kitchen and fine goods store located in downtown Athens. For the individuals, Mitchell is constantly finding ways to encourage growth and lifelong learning for his team. By providing pathways to continuing education in both the biotechnology industry and leadership, Mitchell equips his team to become the next generation of leaders at ART and beyond. “We were the training ground for all these great companies,” Mitchell said, “now we are building a team that wants to grow while staying here, and we want them to be here for as long they want and works for them.”

But alongside building a dynamic team, Mitchell knows you need to be entrenched in a community you care about and create a symbiotic relationship to be successful as an organization. “You have to ask, how do we build community? that’s what a global company stands on.”

For Mitchell, Athens has been the best match for exactly that reason. “I moved around with my family a lot, and we loved living in different places, but we never found a place to call home,” Mitchell told me. “Athens was our 15th move, and of all the places around the world I’ve lived, this is the first place I get to be both a business member and community member. All our kids come back all the time because Athens is such a great place to be.”

Athens–and Georgia as a whole–has seen significant growth in new industry partnerships and investment as part of a state-wide commitment to business development and support. “The state helps us in so many ways, it’s become such a great place to do business,” Mitchell explains, “and with the university setting up all these different centers for innovation, building out a wide variety of businesses in tech, sciences, and more has been easy.” Notably, ART’s campus is nestled among major international organizations like Johnson & Johnson and

Boehringer Ingelheim. The ability to collaborate and share research, resources, and knowledge has made an indelible impact according to Mitchell.

Even with all the incentives and support provided by the state, Mitchell knows finding and keeping the right people makes all the difference. “It still goes back to talent and community,” he says, “we have created pipelines at Athens Tech and the University of Georgia, alongside sponsoring a spot at Career Academy.” As a UGA alumnibuilt business, ART takes special pride in the relationships built with the surrounding institutions. “Centers of excellence tend to attract phenomenally skilled people,” Mitchell explains, “so do places with great culture and community.” Mitchell has noted the growth in Athens over the years he’s visited and now lived in town. From a city known primarily as a college town to a full-scale business and industry hub, the vibrant culture of Athens has always been the key to success, and Mitchell knows the business

community must return the favor to help sustain the community.

“You have to peel back the layers, see what’s really important in the community, and invest in its future,”

Mitchell explains. “Part of our goal is to map out our footprint and see how we can invest and create a stronger community. The development that has happened stems from the talent in the area and the spirit of the community.”

ART proudly supports local nonprofit and community organizations right in their own backyard like Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, Books for Keeps, and many more.

Mitchell understands that for ART, and all the businesses that call Athens home, to continue on their growing path to success, the community must be supported at every step. “I’ve gotten to see Athens bloom over the years,” Mitchell told me with a proud smile, “and I’m excited to see what comes next.”

The Athena Industrial Park, located on Athena Drive and Olympic Drive, is home to a wide variety of national and international manufacturing, life sciences, and biotechnology companies.

A NEW INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IN ATHENS

In the heart of the southern landscape lies a city where tradition meets reinvention, where the spirit of the past merges seamlessly with the promise of the future. Athens, renowned for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and as the birthplace of public higher education in the United States, has quietly transformed into a burgeoning hub for industry. From startups to established corporations, Athens is attracting attention and investment, carving out a niche as a dynamic center for commerce.

Athens has a history of innovation and development. Once a center of agricultural and textile production, the city has adapted to changing times, embracing new opportunities and industries. In recent years, this adaptability has been particularly evident in the immense rise of life sciences, manufacturing, and entertainment enterprises as well as a host of other industry-leading organizations choosing to do business in Athens and the surrounding areas.

12 | connections magazine

According to the Georgia Innovation Corridor Joint Development Authority, “Long marked on the map as a center for the arts, learning, and cuisine; a music capital; and home to the University of Georgia and Athens Tech, Athens is also noted for a rich manufacturing history and a strong industrial base. From food processing to pharmaceuticals, to plastics and now Caterpillar bulldozers, numerous manufacturers have flourished in Athens-Clarke County for many years. Boasting a diverse business mix, Athens is home to major Fortune 500 companies and local entrepreneurial startups alike.”

Biotechnology in Athens is experiencing a meteoric rise, fueled by a combination of local talent, entrepreneurial spirit, and supportive infrastructure. The Athena Industrial Park is a state-of-the-art facility that serves as a hub for pharmaceutical companies and research institutions, as well as engineering and manufacturing groups. With its world-class amenities and collaborative environment, the park has attracted top industry names like Athens Research & Technology, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Johnson & Johnson who are at the forefront of medical research, developing breakthrough treatments and diagnostic tools that have the potential to transform healthcare. As part of the growing life sciences portfolio in the area, Meissner Corporation, a leading manufacturer of advanced microfiltration and single-use systems for the production of pharmaceutical drugs, biologics, and cell and gene therapies, will invest nearly $250 million in a new manufacturing facility in Athens. The project is expected to create over 1,700 new jobs over the next eight years. Meissner’s new facility will include state-ofthe-art cleanroom facilities and laboratories, as well as research and development, and office spaces.

“We are thrilled to embark on this important expansion and are excited to build our second U.S. manufacturing

campus in Athens-Clarke County,” said Christopher Meissner, President of Meissner. “The State of Georgia, and Athens-Clarke County in particular, is an ideal location with an incredible talent pool and strong geographic position that allows us to serve clients on the East Coast and throughout the world. We sincerely appreciate the partnership with state and county officials, and are eager to break ground to join the community in Athens-Clarke County.”

Similarly, the Athens area has seen a resurgence in manufacturing, with companies investing in state-ofthe-art facilities and advanced production processes. From automotive components to aerospace equipment, manufacturers in Athens are producing high-quality goods that are in demand both domestically and internationally. One company recently investing in Athens is SK Battery America which announced its first project back in 2018. Since then, the company has invested $2.6

billion to build two battery manufacturing facilities in Commerce to supply electric vehicles, including the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Volkswagen ID.4.

However, Athens’s legacy of manufacturing is nothing new. One company that has been providing high-quality manufacturing for over 60 years is Accurus Aerospace, which specializes in precision machining for the aerospace industry. With its commitment to quality and innovation, Accurus has not only been a trusted supplier to major aerospace manufacturers, but has significantly contributed to Athens's reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

In a town revered for its cultural and artistic heritage, and a state forging a reputation as “the Hollywood of the South” the inception of Athena Studios symbolizes the industry growth in Athens perfectly. According to their

website, “Athena Studios is a new state-of-the-art sound stage development, the first of its kind in Athens, Georgia. 200,000 square feet of purpose-built space for TV and film production, with 150,000 square feet of additional space to come. Spacious backlot, production offices and support space. Cutting-edge technology. Athena Studios is the result of a $60 million investment in the new and purpose built space today’s productions need.” As production continues to ramp up, the stage is set for Athens to be at the forefront of the entertainment industry.

As Athens continues to evolve and diversify its economy, the future looks brighter than ever. With a supportive business environment, a talented workforce, a deeply rooted spirit of innovation, and a vibrant community culture, the city is well-positioned to attract investment and talent from around the world.

As we look ahead, one thing is clear–Athens is not just a city with a storied past, but a city with a bright future where creativity, ingenuity, and opportunity converge to shape the next generation of industry.

HOW AI IS HELPING IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SENIOR HUNGER

In the fight against hunger, nonprofit and startup organizations alike are beginning to utilize an unlikely tool: Artificial Intelligence.

In a world where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, the intersection of AI and humanitarian efforts offers a beacon of hope. Among the many challenges humanity faces, hunger, particularly among older adults, remains a pressing issue. However, recent advancements in AI are reshaping the landscape of senior nutrition, offering innovative solutions to alleviate hunger and improve the well-being of aging populations.

The specter of hunger looms large over millions of older adults worldwide. Limited mobility, fixed incomes,

health issues, and social isolation contribute to growing food insecurity among seniors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 820 million people suffer from chronic hunger globally, with seniors being disproportionately affected. In Athens, Georgia, it is estimated that 1 in 5 older adults face the harsh reality of food insecurity, often struggling to access nutritious meals due to a variety of physical, environmental, and socioeconomic factors.

As the global community works to find more effective hunger solutions, innovative AI technology has emerged as a possible game-changer in the fight. Through its capacity for data analysis, pattern recognition, and automation, AI

16 | connections magazine

offers tailored solutions to address the specific needs of aging populations.

One practical solution currently being implemented is AIdriven meal delivery systems, like Delivers.ai, which leverage algorithms to optimize meal plans based on individual dietary requirements, preferences, and health conditions.

According to their website, “Delivers.ai is designed to autonomously deliver food, grocery, and parcels from shops to your doorstep, combining state of art next-gen navigation technology with appealing design. Working with online order platforms and dark kitchens/stores, we empower local delivery to be faster, smarter, risk-free, and cost-efficient.”

By partnering with local restaurants, industrial kitchens, and grocery stores, AI-powered meal delivery can help break down barriers to proper nutrition.

Similarly, non-autonomous meal and grocery delivery companies, like Hungryroot, are turning to AI to help better know what their customers want and need. According to Hungryroot CEO Ben McKean, “Hungryroot can suggest over 6,000 recipes a week, and deliver the ingredients needed for any of them.” Hungryroot and Delivers.ai are not alone in working to eliminate food insecurity. Grocery stores, restaurants, and meal-kit companies across the country are pivoting to AI to ensure that seniors receive nutritious meals tailored to their unique needs, fostering better health outcomes and reducing food inaccessibility.

In brick-and-mortar stores, “smart carts’ powered by AI-driven algorithms from companies like Instacart and Tracxpoint allow shoppers to scan their items directly in the cart, weigh produce, personalize their shopping experience, and keep track of the total cost in real time. Additionally, smart shopping assistants powered by AI algorithms are helping older adults navigate grocery stores more efficiently, guiding them toward healthy food choices within their budget constraints.

On the production level, AI is helping farms and agriculture companies capitalize on more efficient and sustainable food production techniques. AI-powered management systems are helping automate vertical farming, or the practices in which crops are grown on top of each other, rather than in traditional, horizontal rows to conserve land use and increase yields. Likewise, AI-driven precision agriculture practices optimize water usage to increase the availability of fresh produce year-round, while reducing water usage and dependence on costly imports and transportation.

AI initiatives also tackle the pervasive issue of social isolation among older adults that can further exacerbate food insecurity.

As we continue to bring awareness and intelligent solutions to senior hunger, AI will help facilitate predictive analytics to identify seniors at risk of hunger before it escalates into a crisis. By analyzing socioeconomic status, health data, and past food consumption patterns, advanced AI algorithms can flag individuals vulnerable to food insecurity. This proactive approach enables organizations and policymakers to implement targeted interventions, such as subsidized meal programs, community outreach initiatives, and social support networks, thereby preventing hunger among older adults.

Beyond addressing physical hunger, AI initiatives also tackle the pervasive issue of social isolation among older adults that can further exacerbate food insecurity. Virtual assistants and chatbots equipped with AI algorithms provide companionship and mental stimulation to seniors, reducing feelings of loneliness and depression. These digital companions not only offer friendly conversation but also remind seniors to eat regularly, monitor their nutritional intake, and connect them with support services when needed.

By harnessing the power of data and technology, AI offers personalized, proactive, and sustainable solutions to address the complex challenges of food insecurity among older adults. As we strive towards a future where no one goes hungry, AI stands ready to help answer the call, transforming the lives of millions of seniors worldwide and paving the way for a healthier, more inclusive society.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: GOOD VS. EVIL

Pros and Cons of AI for older adults, as told by AI.

For nearly two years every other conversation, headline, or news story has been focused around the latest tech innovation set to change the world: Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence, better known simply as AI, refers to the way machines and computer systems simulate human intelligence in a variety of ways, including learning from data, recognizing patterns, and making decisions. AI may seem like a brand new idea, but it actually has been a part of our lives for years. Voice assistants like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa have been harnessing the power of AI to help automate different aspects of our lives for some time.

However, recent breakthroughs and advancements in technology are changing the way we think about AI.

ChatGPT–the most well-known of these programs–can synthesize thousands of pages of research data in a few short bullet points, write novels in mere minutes, and even give you advice on what to make for dinner. Beyond ChatGPT, programs like DALL-E, Midjourney, and Sora can generate libraries of images and even full videos based on single sentence prompts. The technological possibilities of AI grow by the day, and with that brings a vast array of positive use cases for both business innovation and personal life. Yet there are also many risks and downsides of such a powerful tools.

To get a better understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of AI, here are a few different ways this technology can impact older adults, as told by ChatGPT itself.

18 | connections magazine

POSITIVE AI USE CASES

Health Monitoring and Management: AI-powered devices and applications can monitor vital signs, remind users to take medications, and provide insights into health trends. For instance, wearables like smartwatches can track heart rate and activity levels, providing valuable information for maintaining health and preventing emergencies. AIpowered devices and applications that can provide remote health monitoring, medication reminders, and fall detection systems enhance safety and provide seniors with peace of mind as they age.

Personalized Assistance: Virtual assistants like Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant can help older adults with daily tasks such as setting reminders, making calls, or controlling smart home devices. These assistants can be particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or cognitive impairments. These tools have existed for some time now, but as AI gets more advanced, the ways in which these assistants can provide support will only grow.

Telemedicine: The University of Arizona Telemedicine Program explains, “AI is being increasingly used in telemedicine to allow doctors to make more data-driven, real-time decisions that may improve the patient experience and health outcomes by allowing them to work more toward virtual care alternatives throughout the care continuum.” AI facilitates remote consultations and diagnoses, allowing older adults to access healthcare services without leaving their homes. This is especially useful for individuals with limited mobility or living in remote areas.

Cognitive Training: AI-powered brain training apps can help older adults maintain cognitive function and memory. Brain Training apps offer personalized exercises and activities designed to stimulate the brain and improve cognitive abilities. These tools offer engaging and interactive experiences that promote lifelong learning which research has shown can help combat age-related cognitive decline.

NEGATIVE AI USE CASES

Privacy Concerns: AI systems may collect and analyze large amounts of personal data, raising concerns about privacy and data security, especially for older adults who may be less familiar with technology. Unauthorized access to sensitive information could lead to identity theft or other forms of exploitation.

Ageism in AI Algorithms: Some AI algorithms may unintentionally perpetuate ageist biases, leading to discrimination against older adults in various contexts such as employment, healthcare, or financial services.

Social Isolation: While AI-powered virtual assistants can provide companionship and assistance, excessive reliance on these technologies may contribute to social isolation among older adults, reducing face-to-face interactions with friends and family.

Dependency and Displacement of Human Interaction: Over-reliance on AI companionship or caregiving solutions may lead to a decrease in human interaction, which is essential for mental and emotional well-being. Older adults may become dependent on AI systems, potentially diminishing their sense of autonomy and self-efficacy.

SO WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

As with all new technologies, there are both pros and cons to AI. When in the right hands, AI can streamline systems and processes to positively impact the physical and mental well-being and safety of seniors. When abused, AI can be utilized to take advantage of the most vulnerable among us.

As caregivers and supporters of our seniors, it’s our duty to help steer them only toward those beneficial tools and resources. And for seniors themselves, when in doubt about whether a certain technology may be useful or not, just reach out and ask! That’s why we’re here.
