dear readers

Ah, summer! I don’t know about you, but I just love when things quiet down and ease up around here, providing us the time and space to soak up the sun and enjoy time with family and friends. We’re actually still coming down from our greatest retroProm ever back in May (more on that below) so we truly welcome the rest and relaxation, just as we remain energized by the never-ending support and generosity that we receive from the communities we serve.

Of course, summer can also offer us the time and freedom to travel and explore, and we’re celebrating all of that in this latest issue of Connections Magazine. Inside, you’ll find an article about the rise of beer tourism in Athens and across the country and another that provides tips for how to travel like a local. For adventurers, we’ve included day trip itineraries for visits to Serenbe, Augusta, and the Asheville / Black Mountain area, details about the Georgia Parks Passport program, and an introduction to our very own Center for Active Living’s Outdoor Travel Club. We’re also celebrating the life and accomplishments of Ella Grondahl, who started Global Escapes (an Athens-based travel consultancy) in 1988 and grew it into a successful and sustainable local business.

And now, for some very exciting news: We are thrilled to share that the 2024 retroProm surpassed all expectations by raising more money than ever before in support of our programs! It was truly an unforgettable night, and we thank all who contributed to that success. But that’s not all! After much planning and preparation, we’ve launched our Dementia Resource Center! Built upon four core pillars - education, support, enrichment, and care, the Dementia Resource Center offers a positive, supportive, and understanding approach to demonstrate how full life can still be following a diagnosis.

From all of us at ACCA, we hope this summer brings you peace, joy, and contentment in knowing that our collective efforts are working to enrich the lives of our area seniors! Thank you so much for your support.

Sincerely,

Nothing Finer In The Land

There is something so special about when our favorite football team comes to visit! Back in April, we welcomed several UGA football players and coaches to spend time with our older friends. We had a blast snapping pics, playing games, and enjoying ice cream, and we can’t wait to see them again!

ACCA Flood: Where Are We Now

It’s officially been one year since our building was flooded due to the construction surrounding our campus. The physical damage was significant, and we are still dealing with the consequences. But more so, it’s affected our operations and programming in ways we’ve never imagined. Yet, amidst these challenges, we’ve witnessed unwavering tenacity and commitment from our staff, volunteers, and program participants. Together, we’ve faced the unexpected, demonstrating that even in the darkest of times, our community shines brightest.

Congratulations ShaNiya!

In May, our staff presented our Adult Day Health workbased learning student, ShaNiya Shade, a scholarship at the Athens Career Academy Awards Ceremony. Over the past year, ShaNiya has worked with us to complete her Health Care Pathway at the Career Academy and will be attending LSU in the fall to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner! Congratulations ShaNiya!

Creating a Community of Hope

An Interview with Kellye Morgan, Director of the Dementia Resource Center

For too many, being diagnosed with dementia is a frightening and isolating experience. Because dementia remains a relatively complex and misunderstood set of symptoms even by the medical community, persons initially diagnosed, and their care partners, often receive little information regarding available options and resources. In Greater Athens and Northeast Georgia, the number of persons living with dementia grows significantly each year with our aging population, creating an increasing need for supportive, compassionate, and individualized care in our area.

As part of the Athens Community Council on Aging, the newly opened Dementia Resource Center, or DRC, is poised to be a beacon of hope and support for those living with dementia and their care partners. To celebrate the center’s launch we spoke with Kellye Morgan, the Director of the DRC, to discuss the center's origins, its role in the community, and the transformative impact it aims to have.

How did the decision to create the Dementia Resource Center arise?

Kellye Morgan: The idea for the DRC came about simply from listening to our community's needs. We began receiving an increasing number of calls from people who were unsure of where to start with a dementia diagnosis or where to find resources and support. It became evident that there was a significant need for a place where individuals could connect, seek guidance, and simply talk through their experiences. Dementia is a daunting diagnosis, often accompanied by other health issues, and having a supportive space to navigate this journey is crucial. Our goal was to bridge the gaps in the community for dementia care and provide a sanctuary where people could understand their resources and connect with others no matter their stage or diagnosis.

How will the DRC help address the needs of aging Athens residents and their care partners?

KM: The DRC, as a part of the larger Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA), aims to be a comprehensive resource for dementia care. We work closely with community partners, including hospitals, physicians, assessment centers, and other aging and social services to ensure that our services are well-rounded and inclusive. An advisory council of dementia care professionals and community members with lived experiences helps us stay attuned to evolving needs, allowing us to adapt and provide the most relevant care. By offering a space for intersectional programming, we strive to support all individuals living with dementia and their care partners in Athens and the surrounding areas, ensuring they receive the best possible care tailored to their unique circumstances.

How will dementia-forward programming help ACCA and DRC provide better services?

KM: Dementia-forward programming is essential for creating a continuity of care. This approach allows us to train our staff and structure our services to recognize the needs of those impacted by dementia, reducing the burden on individuals and ensuring consistent, highquality support. Whether you are involved in our Adult Day Health Center, Center for Active Living (CAL), or other ACCA services, you'll benefit from a unified model and framework. This helps reduce stigma and ensures that everyone is equipped to handle situations with empathy and expertise. Our biggest advantage is that no matter where you engage with ACCA, you will receive personcentered care that fosters open, supportive conversations and a sense of community.

What can those living with dementia and their care partners expect from the DRC?

KM: The cornerstone of the DRC is community and a welcoming space. It's vital to support both those living with dementia and their care partners through social

ACCA

programming, activities, education, and respite care. We focus not only on addressing the hardships but also on celebrating the joyful moments. The journey through dementia will, of course, be hard. But there are ways to find moments of hope, fun, and laughter. We want to offer opportunities to create those moments and allow those impacted by dementia to form new memories together. Providing a mix of fun, engaging activities and practical support helps everyone involved recharge and maintain a positive outlook. Our aim is to support people in continuing to do what they love, fostering a sense of joy and fulfillment.

What message do you hope to extend to those living with dementia and their care partners?

KM: Our message is simple: You are not alone. There is a supportive community ready to help you navigate this journey. There is still so much life to experience and joy to be found after a dementia diagnosis. We want to uplift our community members, not just provide triage care. Our focus is on community care, sparking moments of joy, and ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported.

Kellye Morgan’s vision for the DRC is one of hope, support, and community. The center stands as a testament to the power of connection and the importance of comprehensive, compassionate care. As the DRC grows and evolves, it promises to be an invaluable resource for the Athens community, offering a lifeline to those navigating the complexities of dementia.

AGE WELL. Live Well.

You need to be traveling now while you can get around comfortably and see and do all you want to do. I tell that to everyone but especially people my age."
Ella Grondahl

Ella's journey began in Franklin County, where she grew up before taking a business class at a vocational school in Cartersville. She then moved to Atlanta to work for the education department before her career took an unexpected turn when she joined a French steel company. Over the next 16 years, her frequent trips to New York ignited a passion for travel that would shape her future.

When the company closed its satellite offices, Ella found herself at a crossroads. With her daughter Tiffany still in school, she decided it was time to take control of her career and life and ensure the best for her family. She no longer wanted to work for someone else who controlled whether or not she had a job. Ella wanted to be her own boss.

She ventured into real estate and tax work, getting her real estate license and working with a friend who owned a local CPA firm. While working at the firm, her friend suggested opening a travel agency in Athens and asked Ella to be her partner. With Ella’s daughter Tiffany transferring to the University of Georgia, the timing was perfect. "One of those moments in your life where you have to decide which direction to go in," Ella reflects. That’s how, In 1988, Global Escapes was born.

Ella's journey hasn't been without its challenges. The travel industry has faced significant upheavals, from the elimination of agency commissions to the rise of the internet. "You can’t be afraid of change. We’ve always embraced change. It gives you a chance to grow and try new things," Ella says.

The aftermath of 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic

Ella Grondahl, founder of Global Escapes

were both particularly trying times. "COVID was hard, really hard," Ella admits. "Two years of nothing, just a shutdown." Yet, Ella's resilience and adaptability saw Global Escapes through these storms. "When you’re spending $5, $10 grand on a trip, do you really just want to leave it up to the internet?" she asks, emphasizing the

value of personalized travel planning.

Tiffany, Ella’s daughter, has been instrumental in taking Global Escapes to new heights. After graduating, she found her niche in honeymoons and destination weddings, bringing organization and vision to the business. "She’s really been the vision and taken this to the next level," Ella says with pride.

Tiffany’s involvement extends beyond the agency. She serves on various boards, including the American Travel Association and local commerce boards, learning and growing from these experiences. Ella feels incredibly fortunate to have someone so dedicated leading Global Escapes into its next chapter. She is incredibly proud to have a daughter like Tiffany.

For Ella, the greatest joy of running Global Escapes was helping people create lifelong memories. "What job can you have that you’re creating fun for people?" she asks. Whether it's planning a safari in South Africa or a river cruise through Europe, Ella finds immense satisfaction in building dream vacations.

When thinking about her traveled life, Ella’s philosophy on aging well is clearly influenced by her career and passion for adventure, "Stay active, stay involved, keep and make friends. The best way to do that is to travel!" She encourages everyone, especially those her age, to seize the moment and explore the world. Ella firmly believes that traveling is key to staying young at heart. "It keeps you young if you get out there. Get involved in the world and meet different types of people. Stay active and just have fun."

For first-time travelers, Ella recommends starting with easier destinations like Europe or English-speaking countries. "You’d be surprised at how much English is spoken," she notes. The key is to plan meticulously. "You need to have a long-term plan to make sure you can make your trips a reality!"

Ella’s own travel bucket list includes further exploring Asia and South America, with the Galapagos Islands high on her list. She also dreams of a Christmas river cruise through Bavaria.

Ella's favorite trips often include her daughter Tiffany. From christening new vessels to exploring Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Croatia, these mother-daughter adventures are cherished memories. "Most of my trips have been with Tiffany. I love getting to see my daughter explore new places and gain education."

Ella Grondahl’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of one’s passions. Her journey from Franklin County to founding Global Escapes is an inspiration to anyone facing life’s crossroads. "It’s a wonderful business," Ella says. "You should travel often and be sure to travel with your family, kids and all. It’s educational and enriching for everyone at every age. It makes the world a smaller place and gives you a better understanding of cultures."

Global Escapes continues to thrive, offering personalized travel experiences that create memories to last a lifetime. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just starting, Ella, Tiffany, and the rest of their team are ready to help you explore the wide-open world, embodying the true spirit of aging and living well.

As she looks to the future, Ella’s outlook also serves as a lifelong challenge, "It’s a big world out there, it’s wide open. Go see it.”

HOPPING ACROSS AMERICA

The Rise of Beer Tourism in the United States.

The craft beer revolution began in the late 1970s and early 1980s when a handful of pioneering breweries challenged the dominance of mass-produced lagers with bold, flavorful ales. Since then, the movement has grown exponentially, driven by a passion for quality, creativity, and local ingredients. As more craft breweries establish themselves in cities across the country, they’re brewing up something more than just delicious beer: tourism.

Beer tourism is on the rise, transforming the way we travel and explore new destinations. With over 8,000 craft breweries dotting the American landscape, beer enthusiasts are embarking on pilgrimages to experience unique brews, innovative taprooms, and vibrant beer cultures across the country. From the hop fields of the Pacific Northwest to the brewpubs of New

England, beer tourism is becoming a major draw for travelers seeking both flavor and adventure.

This rise of beer tourism in the United States not only reflects the broader cultural shift towards appreciating craftsmanship, localism, and experiential travel but is proving to be a significant economic driver as well.

Craft breweries often become key attractions in their communities, drawing visitors who spend money on lodging, dining, and other local attractions. According to the Brewers Association, the craft beer industry contributed $82.9 billion to the U.S. economy in 2019 and supported more than 580,000 jobs.

With so many incredible breweries all across the country, it’s hard to pick where to start your traveling. Whether you’ve been brewery hopping for years or looking to make your first trek, here are some top cities to consider on your travels.

Portland, Oregon

Portland, often dubbed "Beervana," boasts the highest number of breweries per capita in the United States. The city’s beer scene is characterized by its diversity and innovation, with breweries like Deschutes, Hair of the Dog, and Cascade Brewing leading the charge. Portland's numerous beer festivals, such as the Oregon Brewers Festival and Portland International Beerfest, attract thousands of visitors each year, eager to sample the latest creations from the Pacific Northwest.

Athens, Georgia

Athens, Georgia, is many things: the birthplace of public higher education in America, home to hundreds of bands, a center for top college sports action, and a diverse and vibrant arts and food scene. Athens has also quietly become The All-American Beer Town. The history of Athens craft brewing is much like the actual beer itself — rich, complex, full of life, and only made possible by a dedicated and passionate community. You can find breweries like Creature Comforts, Terrapin, Athentic, and more throughout the city.

San Diego, California

San Diego is renowned for its hop-forward beers, particularly West Coast IPAs. Iconic breweries like Stone Brewing, Ballast Point, and AleSmith have set the

standard for quality and creativity. The city’s beer culture is also deeply intertwined with its laid-back, beach-centric lifestyle, making it a perfect destination for those looking to combine sun, surf, and suds.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville has earned the nickname "Beer City USA" thanks to its impressive brewery count and vibrant beer scene. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is home to renowned breweries like Highland Brewing Company, Wicked Weed Brewing, and Sierra Nevada’s East Coast operation. The city’s walkable downtown area is packed with taprooms and brewpubs, offering a unique and immersive beer experience.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is a beer lover’s paradise, with more than 150 breweries in the metro area. The city hosts the Great American Beer Festival, the largest beer festival in the country, which draws visitors from around the world. Breweries like Great Divide, Denver Beer Co., and Wynkoop Brewing Company are must-visit spots for anyone looking to explore the Mile-High City's diverse beer offerings.

Traveling Along the Beer Trail

For those looking to truly explore all a city has to offer while sampling its finest brews, beer trails are the perfect choice! Many top beer destinations offer itineraries and challenges in the form of beer trails where participants can visit different breweries, try different beers, and earn some fun rewards in the meantime. Here are a few Beer Trails to try on your next adventure.

The Bend Ale Trail, Oregon

The Bend Ale Trail is the largest beer trail in the West, guiding visitors through more than two dozen breweries in and around Bend, Oregon. This self-guided tour offers a passport program that encourages participants to collect stamps from each brewery they visit, rewarding

dedicated beer tourists with prizes. Be sure to check out Deschutes Brewery, a pioneer for Oregon craft brewing.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

While not exclusively focused on beer, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail has embraced the craft beer movement with the addition of the Kentucky Ale Trail. This trail showcases breweries that partner with distilleries to produce barrel-aged beers, highlighting the intersection of bourbon and beer cultures. Head over to Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. to learn more about the only distillery and brewery on the tour.

The Athens Beer Trail

The Athens Beer Trail gives you the opportunity to visit six local breweries to discover their individual approach to craft beer. Along the way, you'll find new flavors, meet new friends, and enjoy the Athens creative vibe. The Athens Beer Trail is the newest beer getaway and adventure in the south -- so, grab your friends and head to Athens for good times and great beer at spots like Southern Brewing, Normaltown Brewing, Akademia Brewing, and more.

The Maine Beer Trail

The Maine Beer Trail features over 100 breweries spread across the state, from coastal towns to inland cities. This trail emphasizes local ingredients and innovative brewing techniques, offering visitors a taste of Maine’s unique beer scene. Be sure to stop by Maine Beer Company to try their hop-forward, American ales.

Whether you’re a seasoned beer aficionado or a curious newcomer, there’s a world of flavors and stories waiting to be discovered. So pack your bags, grab your tasting glass, and embark on a beer-fueled adventure across America. Cheers to the journey!

Happy Hours are the Happiest with Friends

Socialization — whether at age 25, 55, or 75 — is a necessary and powerful antidote to combating feelings of social isolation…which is why the Center for Active Living Happy Hour club was created!

The group brings together active seniors in a similar season of life to mix and mingle at some of Athens's favorite upscale lounges, pubs, and unique watering holes, from the Georgia Theater Rooftop Bar to Oglethorpe Garage to The Root.

Happy Hour probably looks different than when you were 21. For this group, cocktails and mocktails are considered part of the culinary experience as much as a chance to meet up with your circle of friends and meet

new people. The beauty of this social opportunity is that CAL staff plan the details for you – all that’s needed is an RSVP. Each month showcases a lively venue to kick back and relax and enjoy a cold drink. For members, these gatherings create “cherry-on-top” moments to enjoy all Athens has to offer and uninterrupted time with friends.

Do as the Locals Do

A Tourist’s Guide to Not Being a Tourist

In an age where travel has become more accessible than ever, the quest for authentic experiences has emerged as a defining endeavor. No longer content with simply skimming the surface, today's travelers seek deeper connections and genuine immersion in the cultures they visit. Yet, how often do we find ourselves trapped within the confines of the well-trodden tourist path, ticking off landmarks and dining in establishments designed to cater to our comfort rather than our curiosity?

True immersion requires a delicate balance—a dance of respect, curiosity, and adaptability. It demands that we not merely visit a place but become a part of it, even if only for a brief moment. Herein lies the art of traveling like a local, an approach that transforms a journey from a series of photo opportunities into a tapestry of meaningful interactions and lasting impressions.

Language is the gateway to culture, an invitation to step into another world. When we take the time to learn the basics of a local language, we signal our respect

and willingness to engage. Simple phrases—greetings, expressions of gratitude, and polite inquiries—become bridges to warmer interactions and richer experiences.

Imagine arriving in a bustling Parisian café and confidently ordering your café au lait in French, or navigating the vibrant streets of Tokyo with a few essential Japanese phrases at your disposal. These small efforts can turn transactions into conversations and transform strangers into friends. Language apps like Duolingo or Babbel can be invaluable companions, or try jotting down new words and phrases as you learn them to create a deeper connection on your journey.

Clothing is one of the most immediate and visible signals of cultural identity. While comfort is key, blending in often requires a thoughtful approach to dressing. Observing local attire not only helps you fit in but also demonstrates your respect for the community.

In the chic streets of Milan, for instance, you might trade your casual travel wear for sleek, tailored pieces. In the

laid-back villages of Bali, lightweight, modest clothing will help you blend seamlessly with the serene surroundings. The goal is not to mimic but to adapt, to show that you are attuned to the rhythms of the place.

One of the most profound ways to understand a culture is through its food. Tourist-centric restaurants often sanitize this experience, offering familiar dishes at inflated prices. Instead, seek out the hidden gems—the local eateries, bustling markets, midnight diners, and humble street vendors that serve as the heartbeat of the community.

In Lisbon, bypass the crowded restaurants of the Baixa district and venture into a tasca—a small, family-run tavern— where the menu might be scrawled on a chalkboard and the grilled sardines are a revelation. In Bangkok, let the fragrant allure of street food guide you to a vendor crafting pad thai with the practiced precision of generations.

For those unsure where to begin, locals are often the best guides. A friendly inquiry at a neighborhood shop or a casual chat with a fellow patron can yield recommendations far richer than any guidebook.

Understanding and respecting local customs is more than polite—it’s a key to unlocking deeper, more meaningful interactions. Each culture has its own set of social norms, from dining etiquette to greeting rituals. Being mindful of these practices demonstrates your appreciation for the local way of life.

In Japan, the act of bowing is a nuanced form of communication, a gesture of respect that speaks volumes. In Italy, the leisurely pace of a meal is a cherished tradition, an opportunity to savor not just the food but the company. Observing and participating in these customs allows you to slip into the cultural fabric with grace.

While iconic landmarks draw crowds for good reason, the true soul of a destination often resides in its quieter corners. The charm of a hidden alley in Barcelona’s El Born district, the tranquility of a small shrine in Kyoto, or the vibrant energy of a local market in Marrakech can offer insights that no guided tour can match.

These discoveries often come from serendipity— an unplanned detour, a conversation with a local, a recommendation scribbled on the back of a receipt. Websites like Atlas Obscura can be a treasure trove of

off-the-beaten-path ideas, but nothing beats the thrill of stumbling upon a hidden gem through your own wanderings.

To truly feel a part of a place, immerse yourself in the activities that define local life. Attend a neighborhood festival, join a cooking class, or simply spend a morning in a local park, observing and participating in the rhythms of the day.

In Buenos Aires, the passionate embrace of tango can be experienced not just in grand performances but in milongas—intimate dance halls where locals gather to dance the night away. In a small Italian village, the simple act of joining the evening passeggiata—a leisurely stroll through the town square—can offer a profound sense of connection.

Where you lay your head at night can significantly shape your travel experience. Eschewing international hotel chains in favor of locally owned accommodations can provide a more intimate and authentic stay. Whether it’s a charming guesthouse, a cozy bed and breakfast, or a unique Airbnb, these places often reflect the character and hospitality of the community.

In the heart of Havana, a stay in a casa particular—a private homestay—allows you to experience Cuban life up close, often with the added bonus of homemade meals and insider tips from your hosts. In rural Ireland, a bed and breakfast run by a local family offers not just a place to sleep but a warm welcome and a wealth of stories.

Sometimes, the best way to connect with a place is simply to observe. Find a café, a park bench, or a bustling square, and watch the world unfold around you. Notice the interactions, the gestures, the small details that define everyday life. This practice of observant immersion can deepen your understanding and appreciation of the culture you’re experiencing.

To travel like a local is to embrace a mindset of curiosity, respect, and adaptability. It’s about seeking out authentic experiences, forging genuine connections, and immersing yourself fully in the culture and daily life of your destination. As you embark on your next journey, remember that the path less traveled often leads to the most rewarding discoveries. So step off the beaten path, open yourself to new experiences, and do as the locals do—you might just find it’s the most enriching way to see the world.

DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY ENRICHMENT CLASSES

MUSIC THERAPY FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

ACCA’s new Dementia Resource Center is an innovative, person-centered program with comprehensive support and resources for individuals and families affected by dementia.

As part of the broader ACCA, the Dementia Resource Center offers the education, support, enrichment, and care needed to provide all persons living with dementia - and their loved ones - the comfort, connection, and joy needed to continue living a happy and fulfilling life.

Please note that these services are currently provided at no-cost as the program is primarily funded through a grant by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through July 2026.

What: Music Therapy interventions, including instrumental play, group singing and dancing, and musical games, can enhance social interactions, assist cognitive processes, improve sensorimotor activity, and promote overall wellbeing. Amanda Martin has been engaging older adults through music therapy interventions in the Athens area for more than 15 years. This dream vacation is a great spot to go to mentally when feeling stressed – take yourself there while on a break, when trying to sleep, and even when doing meditation. A therapist and art teacher, Kathleen Campbell, MSW enjoys working with those living with dementia through art and other forms of expression.
