KINDERGARTEN & 1st Kindergarten and 1st grades will be creating animals using basic geometric shapes in the form of a paper collage. We will read books by Lois Elhert and talk about how to combine shapes to make an animal. 1st grade will be asked to draw animal as well as create a collage paper animal. *identifies simple shapes in objects all around use of literature in art, reinforce math skills as it relates to shapes and space constructs a paper animal using cutting, gluing,
1st & 5th Students will be reminded of history lessons about Ancient Egypt and will be working on two projects simultaneously while one project has various stages of drying. One will be a portrait of an Egyptian pharaoh or Queen. 3RD GRADE Third grade is studying all about insects in their science class. In order to make artistic connections, students will given worksheets with half of an insect missing. They will have to use light measuring and observation skills along with symmetrical applications to finish the other half of their insect. Then they will be asked to combine features from different insects to create their own bug. The execution of this will be accomplished by embossing their insect in metal and coloring it with permanent markers. *symmetry connections with science and biology making a unique bug design embossing/ scupting
4th GRADE In history class fourth graders have learned about Queen Victoria and her era. During this time many people began to create homes that had more decorative elements that were less symmetrical. “Queen Victoria ruled Britain (1837 to 1901). During this time, industrialization brought many innovations in architecture. MIDDLE SCHOOL Middle school will have an opportunity to explore the use of graph paper as an aid to making geometric art. We will begin with simple “pixel art” and move to creating a design with two points and angles that go in an ABC pattern (point A, B, and C). They will learn how to make different 3d images and eventually make a cube with a graph design on all sides. *connecting math and art 3d shapes, patterns, and angles shading creating a 3d object with design work all around it.

art class ALABASTER JAR Students will create a painted or collage background and paint a vase using black tempera paint. They will be thinking about the perfume that was poured on the head of Christ, and how the fragrance spread all over the room.

NANTURE PRINTING Students will explore different plants, textures, and flowers. They will create a series of prints and rubbings.
NATURE STUDY PAINTING AND DRAWING Students will study different kinds of plants. The study will lead to different artistic explorations including rubbings, stampings, and paintings. We will marvel at the natural world God has made.
NEGATIVE SPACE COLOR THEORY / I AM SELF PORTRAIT Students are finishing up their study on warm and cool colors. They are reinforcing their use of nagative and positive space.
Students will begin to study the proportions of the face. It is necessary to do portrait/ self portrait studies once or twice a year. The technique will be mix media painting. They will include a short poem or scripture about themselves. This will be an important project leading into April, and they will use acrylic on canvas.

TREE SILHOUETTE AND PAINTING Students will recall facts that they have learned about George Washington Carver. They will learn that while he lacked resources, he was truly resourceful and sometimes made his own pigments using natural things. The students will hammer or pound petals or flowers to extract their pigment and create a print. They will also study plants, paint on rocks, and make a flower painting. These projects will carry us through April.
TROJAN HORSE WATERCOLOR Students are learning about the trojan war in their history lessons. They will have a step by step drawing lesson on how to draw the Trojan Horse. They will paint it using a wash technique, and to add texture perhaps, they might glue toothpicks here and there.
KNIGHTS ARMOR RELIEF Students will do research to create a drawing of a knight, including some realistic details. Then, with the use of a stylus, they will create a relief on aluminum and age it with black paint.
OUTER SPACE Students will create a scene from outer space and add a shuttle, or satellite. They will learn how to texturize their background to show a galaxy.

Our emphasis will be on the irregularities, assymetrical design, and bold contrast of colors. Students will create an abstract collage in response.

They will learn that the quilts were often made with scraps, were created by women for practical reasons rather than decorative. They will also think about the how quiltmaking created community and were often made by several women. Each student will create an abstract collage that will be added as a school-wide collaborative installation that will look like a quilt.

FEBRUARY art class graDEs 1 - 8 TREE SILHOUETTE AND PAINTING Students will do a picture study of Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Hunters in the Snow. Specifically we will notice how the artist created a cold feeling with the use of color. They will try to give a narrative to explain the events depicted. For their art project, they will create a unique tree silhouette and will either make a cut out of it, or an inked illustration. The background will use color to give a particular feeling. Perhaps they will decide to make it feel cold as one would expect, or they will make the background warm in juxtaposition with the winter tree.

PAINTING COLLAGRAPH SCRATCH ART WINTER MITTENS The students will be engaged in a process of painting with patterns, printing snow on a painted background, and finally glueing their painted mittens on their background. This will take 2 weeks.

For the last two weeks before Christmas break, students will be fully engaged and inspired by Christmas and the word Advent; the coming of our Lord. We will be making ornaments to bring home to hang on the tree or on the wall. The techniques will include: collage, yarn (fiber) art, and wax resist. There are several cardboard, wooden, and ceramic ornaments donated by parents that will be utilized and covered with collage.

THE STORY OF WATER Fifth grade will be looking to the past as they prepare their art piece for the contest by thinking about the impact the Nile River had on ancient Egypt, who would not have existed without that water source. The best pieces will be selected and entered into the contest.

CONCEPTUAL ART Students will be asked to conceptualize their view on water in the Earth. They will find a picture that inspires their design and choose a meium to achieve a finished art piece, with the help of the instructor. Finished or strong pieces will be entered into the international art contest. This is a great opportunity for the student to bring an original concept to completion.

EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE In order to tie in their landscape to their history lessons in class, they will get to pick a landscape that they would like to paint or use pastel on heavy stock paper. The best pieces will be selected and entered into the international contest.

Tissue paper pumpkin collage. In celeration of Fall and harvest, the students will create a pumpkin. The technique will strengthen fine motor skills, and will introduce collage to the students.
Illuminated letters alphabet. This will be used for Reformation Day. The students scratch the letters into styrofoam for the school to use for printing.
