We wanted to fill this issue with fun alternatives to the typical “New Year, New You” vibes. We have included unique ways to approach wellness in 2024, much-needed getaway ideas and so much more. To get things rolling, we are shining a Spotlight on Lilburn (p. 8), where you can find yummy bites and exciting events all year! If you have a goal to get out of your comfort zone a bit, may we suggest a meal at one of our favorite Vegan spots (p. 20) or a shopping trip at a hidden gem like Old Town Flowers and Gifts (p. 16) to discover something new to love? Around here, we are big fans of moving your body for JOY instead of as punishment. Our crew chimed in on some of their favorite ways to get active and came up with these great ideas to help you Revolutionize your Workout Routine (p. 6). For those looking to have more balance in their lives, we suggest a quick Pit Stop in Cloudland Canyon (p. 24) for incredible views and fresh air!

Entering a new year can feel daunting as we rush to outline our goals and reflect on the past year. We invite you to cut yourself a little slack, lean into all aspects of personal wellness and try something new! GET A HOBBY

REVOLUTIONIZE YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE By: Catherine James

The days of treadmill sprints and hours on the elliptical are gone. It’s 2024, and there are hundreds of new, inventive ways to get moving and stay healthy that don’t require soul-sucking cardio. In fact, unless you plan on running a marathon soon, you need minimal to no high-intensity cardio in your workout split. So what should you do instead? Great question! It’s well-known that consistency is key in health and wellness, so the best thing you can do for yourself is choose a workout (or workouts) you enjoy and stick to them! Learning which forms of exercise you enjoy and what your body responds to best can take some time and experimentation. Luckily, Gwinnett County has all kinds of studios and gyms, from Pilates to kickboxing to yoga, where you can test your skills. Take it from me: Years of tedious cardio and repetitive weightlifting led me to resent my time in the gym. So, I gave in and traded my gym membership for a ClassPass subscription. The ClassPass app unlocked a world of movement, with classes I had been dying to try and some I had never even heard of before, all in one place. The beauty of ClassPass was its ability to plug me into a workout class immediately, with no admin required and at incredible discounts. Since then, I have tried everything from barre to cycling to infrared yoga and have learned so much about my body and its astounding abilities throughout the process. I’ve found that trading my go-to weight training for a pilates or spin class twice a week works perfectly for me. It keeps me consistent and gives me more purpose in the gym, whether honing my Pilates posture or upping my cycling stats. But that’s me. Only you can determine what works best for you! Branch out from your current workout regimen and get in tune with your body at these local studios.

*Book your spot in any of these classes through the ClassPass app! 1. Lifemoves Studio - Buford For a holistic stretch session, a core-building reformer workout or a soulcentering barre routine, Lifemoves Studio has you covered. Focusing on synergy and promoting a balanced lifestyle, the classes at Lifemoves offer a little bit of everything, from muscle activation and cardio to stretching and mindfulness. 2. Powers Pilates - Lawrenceville The megaformer enhances any floor pilates routine by incorporating resistance and balance. Powers Pilates is a great way to test your skills in a safe environment under the guidance of a professional. Their small, four-person classes allow for more one-on-one time and quicker improvement. With classes focusing on a range of areas, including classic Pilates practice, breathwork, cardio and seamless aging, there’s something for everyone. 3. Georgia Fitness - Sugar Hill If you prefer to be your own trainer, Georgia Fitness has a variety of performance-promoting machines and workout equipment to assist you in your fitness journey. But if you need a few workout buddies and a friendly face to encourage you along the way, they offer heart- and ironpumping group classes like Zumba, core, yoga and even martial arts.

PLAY YELLOW RIVER WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Spend a day along the Yellow River getting up close and personal with dozens of wildlife, including lemurs, sloths, peacocks and pigs. This local petting zoo and discovery center doubles as a home for injured and orphaned wildlife. Make new furry friends and support the cause at this first-of-its-kind wildlife center in Gwinnett.

SPLASH PAD Lilburn’s most popular attraction among the kiddos opened just a few years ago in Lilburn City Park. With many concerts and events hosted in the park over the summer, it’s the perfect place to bring the kids while Mom and Dad enjoy an evening out.

LILBURN CITY PARK This 10-acre gem is central to everything and is often referred to as Lilburn’s “front porch." With the greenway trailhead, splash pad and amphitheater all in one spot and walkable from downtown, the City Park is a hub of activity most days of the year. Everything from summer concerts to 5ks to parades happens right here!

CITY SPOTLIGHT: AGAVERO CANTINA This Mexican fare has been a staple of the Lilburn community for over a decade. With their cantina location dishing up everyone’s favorite Mexican foods piping hot and their Parkside location serving snacks and drinks from a converted double-decker bus, Agavero brings the best of both worlds to charming Lilburn. There’s no better place to spend a warm evening in Lilburn than Agavero Parkside’s porch.

LILBURN HERE’S WHAT WE DIG:

1910 PUBLIC HOUSE. CAMP CREEK GREENWAY Starting downtown and traversing 4.2 miles through Lilburn’s woodlands, Camp Creek Greenway is a dedicated National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat. A walk, jog or ride through the trees is just footsteps away from the city’s two major parks, Lilburn City Park and Lions Club Park.

8

Enjoy a dinner date from the sunshine yellow patio chairs or the cozy dining room of 1910 Public House, Lilburn’s prime spot for upscale dining downtown. With a seasonal menu filled with classic American favorites like Shrimp and Grits, Bourbon Glazed Salmon and Fried Green Tomatoes, you simply can’t go wrong.

OLD TOWN LILBURN At the very heart of Lilburn lies an alluring downtown district, where quaint shops, delicious eats and a heartwarming community are just a hop, skip and a jump away. As a former railroad community, historic charm and that old town “everybody knows everybody” feel are embedded here. Don’t leave without checking the events calendar, discovering a historic landmark or stopping to enjoy a railway sighting!

BAPS SHRI SWAMINARAYAN MANDIR In 2007, over 34,000 hand-carved pieces were shipped from India to Atlanta to construct this Mandir. It now serves as a temple and place of worship for Hindus across metro Atlanta. The Mandir is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds and serves as a celebration and representation of Indian culture in our region.

DiG DEEP A YEAR IN LILBURN

Lilburn Daze - October

By: Catherine James

There are a million and one ways to celebrate every season, and the city of Lilburn hosts an event for each one. Lilburn City Park, downtown’s crown jewel, is the community’s goto event venue, and the turnout is always impressive. The best thing about small-town charm in a city like Lilburn is you’ll never meet a stranger. Friends, lovers, family and visitors alike are always welcome to join the fun. It’s the first of the year, and the city has planned 365 days of exciting events. So, the next time you have a yearning to get out, grab a cooler, a lawn chair and a friend and hit the road to Lilburn! Rock the Park: June - September With Agavero Parkside mixing the margs and bands from the likes of Elton Live, a Sir Elton John tribute band, and The Tony Howard Show, a country, soul and rock and roll group, rocking the stage, all you have to bring to Lilburn’s Rock the Park series is a pair of dancing shoes! With Agavero close by serving premium food, the splash pad offering kid-friendly entertainment all night long and the amphitheater holding all the action, endless entertainment options exist without ever leaving the park.

Lilburn’s only arts and crafts festival happens during the crisp days of early October when the weather is perfect for striking creative inspiration. Lilburn City Park plays host again, this time with gorgeous fall colors. Don’t miss dozens of crafty vendors, many of whom are local residents, a selection of flavorful food trucks, a doggy dazzle paw-rade, train rides and fun for the whole family. Admission, parking and shuttle transportation are all free! Monsters and Movies on Main - October Shift your attention from Lilburn City Park’s entertainment-hosting amphitheater to the giant inflatable movie screen that pops up in the middle of the park one night a year. There’s no better time for a spooky movie under the stars than Halloween. So, grab your fellow goblins and ghouls, dress to the nines (in your best Halloween costume, of course) and get ready for a night of kid-friendly scares. In addition to the movie, kids can participate in a costume contest, pumpkin painting and, thanks to the vendors, a little early trick-or-treating.

Sparkle in the Park - Fourth of July This firework extravaganza kicks things up a notch for Independence Day. Hosted in the bustling Lilburn City Park, Sparkle in the Park is Lilburn’s busiest event of the year. Gwinnettians come from across the county to take in the spectacle of fabulous fireworks. With a special musical performance, inflatables, free face painting, balloon artists and many dining options from Cuban to fair food to smoothies to sweets, this is no ordinary night out in Lilburn.

Don’t fret if you miss a show; they happen every month. So, keep an eye on the city’s event calendar to plan your summer shows.

Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting - December Lilburn City Park is just as magical, if not more, when the holidays come to town. Kick off the season with an illuminating tree lighting and a Christmas parade surrounded by friends and family in downtown Lilburn. The parade, filled with community member floats, begins in the early evening, travels down Main Street, and ends in the festive City Park. When the parade ends, the countdown to Christmas begins as everyone eagerly anticipates the lighting of the town Christmas tree, which marks the official beginning of the holiday season in Lilburn. Visitors can enjoy selfies with Santa, train rides and a series of joyful performances at the park. For the city of Lilburn’s packed events calendar, visit cityoflilburn.com/calendar.aspx.

NEVER HAVE I EVER...

MADE HOMEMADE PASTA! By: Paula Hastings

I have always wanted to learn how to make my own pasta. Whenever I say this, someone inevitably chimes in with an enthusiastic “ME TOO!” Someone also always quips, “you know they sell that at Publix,” which is true. But since cooking is my happy place, I had to tackle this labor of love—and “love” is what I discovered! Luckily, a friend of mine knows a very experienced chef who teaches pasta-making classes at The Cook’s Warehouse in Atlanta, so I knew we were in good hands. I never gave much thought to ingredients, but they are surprisingly simple. Flour, eggs and water is all you need. From there, you can incorporate endless flavors (think roasted garlic, lemon, chive and so on). The amazing Chef Gloria shared secrets such as: King Arthur flour is a must and there is no need to spend a fortune on specialty

cheeses. She recommended Costco’s Pecorino Romano—it’s delish and super affordable. I purchased a basic crank pasta maker afterward and found I prefer the control of the manual maker over the fancier KitchenAid attachment. You get to try both during the class. Once I got a feel for the basic dough, creating various versions of fettuccini, ravioli, tortellini and so much more became an obsession that I brought to my kitchen. Thank you, Amazon, for allowing me to quickly fill in with the tools I realized I needed (actually craved) as I perfected my new craft. Please believe me when I say homemade pasta truly is better than you can imagine!

Tips to Dig into Your Own Pasta: • • • • • •

Everything is better when you recruit partners in crime (AKA: friends) to join you. Take a class first. There are many moving parts to the techniques you need to “feel” and be taught by an expert. After taking a lesson, make it within a few weeks so you remember what you learned and hone your new skill at home. Pasta takes time! This isn’t an instant gratification venture but an amazingly cathartic and satisfying one. You’ll require lots of space for the various stages of making and drying the pasta. Make extra! It stores and freezes beautifully, so while the flour is flying, go ahead and commit to making more.

A yummy bowl of comfort pasta is the perfect cure during these chilly New Year's days. Make 2024 the year you transform “I want to” into “I did it” and find your new passion!

TASTE TEST: FIND BLISS WITHOUT THE BUZZ By: Eryn Austin

If you are looking for an alternative to the typical bar scene, experience the herbal side of things at a kava bar. Kava is a plant indigenous to the South Pacific region and known for its relaxation and sleep promotion properties. Some studies even suggest it can help with pain reduction and increase the body’s resistance to disease. As an alcohol alternative, kava offers a laid-back effect for those who want to be chill without a buzz. As kava grows in popularity, kava bars have begun to pop up, allowing kava drinkers a vibey environment to enjoy a tasty menu and some great conversation. Since the taste of kava on its own may be too earthy for some, kava bars work to curate a delicious range of options, like fruity teas and even boba additions, to please the palate. At Mai Kai Kava in Athens, we tried the Hannabliss option—brewed kava with vanilla and strawberry flavors. This was the perfect blend of fruity and creamy, sweetened with honey, and was a delight to drink. The Reese’s Mudslide also caught our attention—if you love chocolate and peanut butter, this is a must-try for a creamy and decadent kava treat!! The vibes at Mai Kai were very chill and welcoming, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. You can enjoy live music, play a round of pool or grab a board game for some competition with friends. The range of events, such as open mic nights and movie nights, adds to the family feel at Mai Kai, where every guest will genuinely feel welcome and at ease from the moment they enter. DAY TRIP: By: Rylee Govoreau

When you think of Tennessee, you may automatically picture Nashville or Memphis, but there’s another lesser-known Tennessee destination you must move to the top of your bucket list for your next day trip out of Atlanta. With numerous museums, culinary choices, outdoor attractions and shopping opportunities, there is much to explore in this “Scenic City” only two hours outside Atlanta. Chattanooga, nicknamed the “Scenic City,” was named in Lonely Planet’s “Best in the U.S.” and “10 U.S. destinations you need to see,” as well as the New York Times “Top 45 Places to Go” in the world. If you’re craving a quick escape, Chattanooga makes for an easy day trip from Atlanta, and we’ve gathered a few tips for making the most out of your visit to Tennessee’s vibrant and quirky city. If you’re anything like us, you will want to eat, see and do as much as you can in a day. To give you a boost for the adventures ahead, start your day with coffee and breakfast as soon as you arrive in Chattanooga. For breakfast, we recommend starting the day in Downtown Chattanooga’s Bluff View Art District at Rembrandt’s Coffee House, located at 204 High Street. Named one of Chattanooga’s favorite coffee shops 12 years in a row, try out one of their signature drink specials like the Peanut Butter Pie Latte or Sweater Weather and pair it with a homemade, freshly baked pastry. Enjoy your breakfast on the scenic outdoor patio for the perfect start to a wonderful day ahead. After you’ve fueled up with a cozy and delicious breakfast stop, we recommend exploring the attractions at Lookout Mountain, which is less than five miles from Rembrandt’s Coffee House. The most popular attractions at Lookout Mountain are Ruby Falls, the

28

Incline Railway and Rock City. Start with a trip up Lookout Mountain via the Incline Railway, nicknamed “America’s Most Amazing Mile.” At an incline of 73% grade, the Incline Railway is the world’s steepest passenger railway, making for a breathtaking view to the top. This attraction sells out fast, so buy tickets ahead of time at ridetheincline.com. After enjoying the ride on the Incline Railway, explore one of Lookout Mountain’s most popular attractions, Ruby Falls. While Ruby Falls may be touristy, there is a reason over half a million people visit each year. Discovered in 1928, historic Ruby Falls is the tallest and deepest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States! You’ll descend 26 stories into the cavern hidden within Lookout Mountain. All tickets are timedentry and can be purchased online at rubyfalls.com. A quick 10-minute drive from Ruby Falls will bring you to Rock City — the perfect ending to your day at Lookout Mountain. If the weather is just right, you’ll be able to see seven states from the top. Hours of exploring Chattanooga’s most popular attractions will likely work your appetite back up, and the next stop on our itinerary will surely satisfy your taste buds. Our lunch recommendation is Taco Mamacita specializing in “funky-fusion tacos,” fresh housemade guacamole and amazing margaritas in Chattanooga’s trendy Northshore District. Northshore’s tagline says it best: it’s "Where Hip Meets Historical." After indulging in the world’s best duo — tacos and margaritas — the Northshore offers the perfect atmosphere to conclude your trip. Explore Coolidge Park and stroll across one of the world's largest pedestrian bridges, the Walnut Street Bridge, walk along the Tennessee Riverwalk, a beautiful 13-mile greenway along the Tennessee River, or simply enjoy the green space. Before hitting the road for home, get a treat from Clumpie’s Ice Cream Co., where each batch of ice cream is made by hand. With lively attractions, breathtaking views and delicious food, the Scenic City awaits. The next time you crave a quick escape from Atlanta, Chattanooga has you covered.

Sitting prominently in front of the library on the promenade are the bronze statues of Thomas Snell and James Sawyer, the founders of Snellville and boyhood friends from England whose retail stores were the building blocks of the city. Sample the many flavors that Snellville has to offer, from the traditional Southern cuisine to the farm fresh from scratch restaurants and shop at one of the largest shopping areas in Gwinnett County. Briscoe Park, featuring a lake, community garden, playground, pool, athletic fields and courts offers all the amenities for the perfect family reunion. Snellville park and hotels are the perfect place to book your next sports tournament or event. For more information: www.ExperienceSnellville.com

EXTRA FUN

SPECIAL SPOTLIGHT:

PICKLE THE GWINNETT WAY

AT PICKLE & SOCIAL You may live under a rock if you haven’t heard of Pickleball. But, seriously, why is it all the rage? That’s simple: it’s a blast! Pickleball, known as America’s fastest-growing sport, combines aspects of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. Widely loved by all, the game is favorable for any age or skill level and anyone looking for a good time! The court is ¼ the size of a standard tennis court, and the sport is played with a wiffleball and paddle. Games can also be played in singles or doubles to get your friends in on the fun. Now, Pickle and Social is bringing the trendiest sport of the moment to Gwinnett County! The entertainment and sporting complex just opened its very first location in Buford at The Exchange and has plans to expand across the US. This ultimate hangout spot combines craft food, signature drinks and live entertainment and is the perfect spot for your next happy hour get-together. With world-class indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, be sure to bring your equipment and make plans to stay awhile in case things get competitive! Just a footstep away from the courts is a full-service restaurant, bar and lounge serving up chef-driven classic American cuisine and a menu full of uniquely crafted cocktails and local brews. Don’t make the mistake of staying inside, though, just outside, you’ll find multiple green spaces complete with 26 cornhole lanes, a rooftop bar lounge and an outdoor Biergarten. And it’s not just for pickleball fans, there are two professional volleyball courts at the venue’s Pickle Beach, where weekly live entertainment is set to take the 27-foot stage. You may come for the competition, but you’re sure to stay for the music, cocktails and eats. Don’t miss out on Gwinnett’s newest, hottest hangout!
