WE DiG: TAILGATING ESSENTIALS
By: Rachel Jeffers
Tailgating in the South is a treasured tradition, commonly known as a pre-game activity to a sporting event, usually football, but we’ve come to realize that tailgating can take place for any reason. We tailgate before concerts, football and baseball games, lego conventions and even weddings. What once was cracking a quick beer while sitting on a truck tailgate to cut down on overpriced stadium beverages, has evolved into a parade of mobile feasts where friends and even strangers bond over food/drink and their unwavering dedication to the hobbies they love. Here are our suggested essentials and bougie extras that will make any tailgate great!
ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT:
Tailgating can take place anywhere, literally in a hotel parking lot before you walk two miles to the stadium, in a premier corner spot of a parking deck or in a pre-purchased spot designated for pop-up tents and generators. Make sure you have the essential equipment such as 10x10 Ez Up Tents to protect you from the elements, folding tables for your chips and dips and a good cooler that can keep items cold for days along with wheels to transport your beverages. Don’t be trashy, get trash bags to clean up the mess and folding chairs that inevitably no one sits in because they are too busy mingling. A small propane grill is also suggested if you are tailgating longer than two hours so the food-to-beverage consumed ratio is balanced.
ELEVATED EXPERIENCE:
To elevate your tailgating experience to the next level, bring a generator for a TV to watch pregame highlights! If it's chilly, mini propane heaters keep your hands toasty or if it’s hot, a battery-operated fan can cool down the crowd. A generous host will always provide a bar set-up, elevating your crew's experience with a pop-up bar that has a clean ice container for all the cups/drinks. Cover your tables with stretch linens for a polished look along with a pop-up trashcan. The grillmaster needs a grilling caddy with all the necessities: paper towels, grilling tools, oil, seasoning, foil, platters and food “tents” to keep the flies away. Don’t forget a Bluetooth speaker with pregame vibes to get the crowd hyped for the main event!
Pro Tip: Pack a large plastic bin the night before (because inevitably you will be rushed getting out the door) with the essentials to make it easy to carry everything and easy to grab in case your guests need something. Stock it with hand sanitizer, extra trash bags, a portable phone charger, extra koozies, plates, paper towels and cups, a first aid kit (for some stupidity), a bottle opener, bug spray, sunscreen and hand warmers. EXTRA toilet paper is a must as porta-potties are the go-to mode of defecation while tailgating outdoors.
TAIL·GATE
(NOUN OR VERB)
/'tāl,gāt/
“host or attend a social gathering at which an informal meal is served from the back of a parked vehicle, typically in the parking lot of a sports stadium.”
ENJOYABLE EATS:
Dips: A bag of chips and premade dip is the easiest and most convenient tailgate food available. No fuss no muss. You can’t go wrong with Publix’s deli selection of dips.
Dishes: Parking lot tailgates make it easy to throw meats on the grill with the safety of a blacktop. Hot dogs and hamburgers are a standard staple, but if you visit Patton’s Meat Market you might be enticed to level up your grilling game with a variety of unique cuts of meat. They have a great wing recipe and shopping list for Patton’s-bffa-que Wings that is perfect for tailgating. If you want to sit back and enjoy the day without breaking a sweat under the flames, New South Tailgate & BBQ which is veteran-owned and operated in Lawrenceville makes it easy to pick up BBQ and sides that are ready for game time! Another easy peasy pick-up is a classic sandwich platter from Main Street Deli in Buford.
Drinks: Beer, bottled water and sweet tea for the DD. Grab some RTD (ready-to-drink) canned beverages to eliminate the need for extra mixers. Don’t forget a cooler for “clean” ice to pour over. (No one wants ice that 50 hands have rummaged through to find a cool beer.)
Desserts: Don’t sleep on the sweets. Choc-Corn (white chocolate covered puff corn) is sure to be a hit to munch on before the game, grab a large bag at Special Kneads Bakery. Pound cake is a perfect cake for tailgating because it satisfies the sweet tooth without the mess of a fancy cake. Grab a mocha, lemon or blueberry pound cake from Hansel and Gretel Bakery (3 locations in Gwinnett).
Exquisite Eatables: Elevate your game by pre-ordering a charcuterie tray to graze on while sipping on bougie beers. If you're into quality not quantity, pick up a 32oz Crowler from StillFire Brewery to elevate your day drinking from past blue ribbon to craft!
Good Morning Sunshine: For those afternoon events…make Bloody Marys with Third Rail Distillery’s Val’s Vodka and Charleston Bloody Mary Mix and some Hooch Pickles that you can pick up at Wilkes Meat Market. Grab some donuts from Donut Worry on your way to the event and you are all set!

CITY SPOTLIGHT: "YES" DAY IN DULUTH
By: Abby Wilkerson
As parents, we spend so much time saying “no” – no to extra screen time, no to sugary breakfasts, no to staying up past bedtime on a school night,…. It’s exhausting for everyone, both young and old. But imagine a day where the answer to every request is…"YES!" Get your family into the car, head to downtown Duluth and prepare yourselves for a day full of unforgettable memories!
Say YES! to dessert for breakfast
Simply Done Donuts | 3550 West Lawrenceville St.
Okay, donuts for breakfast aren’t especially revolutionary, but hear us out. Simply Done Donuts aren’t your momma’s donuts – they’re extra. Famous for their mini donuts (you’ll want at least two), Simply Done’s offerings are definitely closer to dessert than breakfast. These cake-style donuts can be piled high with Oreos, Butterfingers, Snickers, Fruity Pebbles and more. Their number one seller does feature fruit – but it’s apple pie. Kiddos still not sold? Let them add a scoop of ice cream to create a donut sundae or order your donuts to be blended into a donut milkshake.
After your breakfast of champions, snap a photo in front of the Dream Big mural right around the corner – an adorable wall mural depicting a colony of ants rolling olives uphill save for one (wise) ant who is rolling a cookie.
Say YES! to getting messy
Eye Candy Art Studio | 3127 Main Street
Like many pre-parents, we said of course we would provide a judgement-free space for our future children to exercise their creativity and grow their imaginations. Fast forward to toddlers with paint in your kitchen and their future artist potential seems significantly less important.
But hey, it’s Yes Day – time to head to Eye Candy Art Studio, where you and the kiddos can sling around paint and clay to your hearts’ content. No reservations are required; walk right in, sit right down and start painting canvas and pottery. Eye Candy provides all the supplies and even cleans up the mess when you finish.
This has the potential to be one of those sneaky-sneaky parenting moves – the kids think you said yes to the mess but what you really said yes to was creating Nana’s Mother’s Day present three months ahead of schedule.
Say YES! to climbing on the public art
Gigglebark Tree Playground | 3167 Main Street
Don’t you love that spark in a kid’s eye when a piece of public art catches her imagination…and then watching that spark extinguish itself upon reading the “No Climbing” sign. While we can respect that art is for enjoying visually rather than tactically, the City of Duluth found a way to marry the best of both worlds. How? They asked a kid.
In 2022, the City of Duluth invited residents of all ages to submit drawings of their dream pieces of playable art for the Playground Design Contest. The result is the Gigglebark Tree playground: a beautiful combination of colorful eucalyptus bark, twisting oak roots and swaying willow branches. Oh, and a slide winding around the trunk with climbable steps and tunnels all through the root system. Be sure to come back and visit the Gigglebark Tree at night – the illuminated willow branches add the perfect magical touch.
Say YES! to the little Mother Cluckers
LR Burger | 3153 Main Street
Now that you’ve worked up an appetite (not to mention burned off your donuts), head over to LR Burger for lunch. Brought to you by the same people who own Local Republic in downtown Lawrenceville (also yum), LR Burger serves up kids food that adults will love too. Burgers, but make it Patrick Swayze hot; hot dogs, but make it pimento cheese. The coolest parents will let their kids order the Mother Clucker chicken sandwich for the sheer joy of saying that phrase aloud to an adult.
But if there was ever a day for ice cream to be on the menu all day long, it’s Yes Day. LR Burger also has tremendous milkshakes in the typical flavors plus peanut butter pie, salted caramel and Oreo. And hey, it’s Yes Day for YOU too – treat yourself to a boozy shake in bourbon pecan, a chocolate martini, a salted rum praline or The Dude (vodka and coffee liqueur).
Say YES! to being a kid in a candy store
Rocket Fizz | 3131 Main Street
What happens when you combine a sweet tooth with an experimental palate? Rocket Fizz candy shop. Reminiscent of an old general store, this retro candy shop features thousands of candy varieties as well as 300+ soda flavors. Sure, you can find M&Ms, Sour Patch Kids and Dr. Pepper but “normal” is not where Rocket Fizz truly shines. We suggest getting adventurous! Rocket Fizz carries candies from all over the world; pick a country and try something new. Then, choose sodas for each other – how about ranch dressing flavored? Sweet corn? Pickle?
Hot Tip: Rocket Fizz carries the full assortment of Harry Potter-inspired candy. Chocolate frogs, butter beer, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans (“Alas, ear wax.”), jelly slugs and more. Accio, chocolate wand!
Say YES! to running away to adventure on a train
Southeastern Railway Museum | 3595 Buford Hwy.
This one may fall into the sneaky-sneaky parent category as well. Sure, it’s a museum…but it’s a train museum full of full-sized working locomotives.
Founded in 1970, the Southeastern Railway Museum features over 90 pieces of rolling stock over its 30-acre museum. Get up close and personal with classic steam locomotives, historic Pullman cars (including one used by a president!) and the amusement park train that operated for twenty years at the Birmingham Zoo. If just looking isn’t enough, take a ride on a restored caboose pulled behind a diesel locomotive without ever leaving the property.
Officially dubbed Georgia’s Transportation History Museum in 2000, the Southeastern Railway Museum is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so plan accordingly.
Say YES! to crossing the river
Rogers Bridge Park | 4291 Rogers Bridge Road
End your epic Yes Day with one last opportunity to run the energy out at the recently remodeled Rogers Bridge Park. This 24-acre riverfront park is bordered on the north by the Chattahoochee River and offers a multitude of outdoor experiences. Watch brave adventurers take on the mighty Chattahoochee at the kayak and canoe launch. Exhaust yourself on the playground and relax with a snack at the picnic pavilion. Dog-watch at the Chattapoochee Dog Park. And when you run out of things to do…cross the river into Forsyth County.
The early 1900 bridge for which the park was named closed in 1970 due to structural deterioration. The Department of Transportation recently finished construction on a $5.9 million replica, once again linking Duluth and Johns Creek. Walk or bike across the Chattahoochee to Cauley Creek Park to enjoy playing courts, grassy areas and a three-mile rubber-surfaced walking trail. Don’t forget to check out the artwork at both bridge entrances to see what the original bridge looked like!
And finally…
Say YES! to watching your exhausted kids fall asleep with grins on their faces.
Eat a donut sundae or donut milkshake at Simply Done Donuts

NEVER HAVE I EVER... BEEN TO THE RINGLING CIRCUS
By: Ashley Topham
There’s nothing that says brawn more than the Ringling Circus which combines the realm of acrobatics, aerial, music, dance, comedy and daring performances that will have you on the edge of your seat! Buckle up Gwinnett because the circus is coming to Duluth at the Gas South Arena from February 21-23. What makes this even more exciting is that a Gwinnett native is one of the performers! I had the opportunity to sit down with Lauren Irving who has spent her entire career in the world of entertainment and is now performing with the Ringling Circus!
Lauren spent the majority of her upbringing in Gwinnett. From a young age, Lauren shared that she developed a love for performing after watching her older sister who was active in musicals and dance recitals. With the support of her family, she became involved with the arts throughout the entirety of her schooling. As she entered college, she applied to the Disney College Program which was her first step towards pursuing a music career. After the
program, Lauren continued her entertainment career by working at Universal Studios in Japan! Lauren shared that although she initially signed a one-year contract, she remained for three years after falling in love with her job and Japan. She then moved on to work on cruise ships, doing a variety of performances including Six the Musical where she performed as Catherine of Aragon.
With a bountiful career in music, Lauren was able to get the role of Aria with the Ringling Circus which she shared has been a truly rewarding and incredible experience. Aria is a part of a trio who all work together to guide the audience through the show. Lauren shared that playing Aria has allowed her to combine her two passions of music and people. As for the character of Aria, Lauren was given the creative freedom to craft Aria’s personality which is modeled after her own characteristics. As we spoke about creating Aria, Lauren shared the vision of Aria’s costume which is just as important as her personality. You’ll notice that Aria sports a vibrant blazer with a mustard yellow collar (Lauren’s favorite color) and black pants which were created by Dawna Oak. Aria’s makeup, which also includes vibrant eyeshadow colors, lets her express herself further in the role.
As our interview wrapped up, Lauren shared that it’s been a surreal experience coming back to Gwinnett to perform. She shared that she feels so thankful for her success because as a kid, she could never imagine where her passion would eventually lead her. Lauren also imparted some advice for our readers in Gwinnett who perhaps want to get started in the entertainment industry but don’t know how or feel scared. She shared that you need to embrace your uniqueness and continue to push yourself to chase your dreams and pursue what you love. For those who may feel scared, Lauren stated that finding a support system whether that's your family, friends or even a club, it’ll make a huge difference when it comes to going after your goals.
SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: NX VINYL
By: Ashley Topham
If you consider yourself a record aficionado with a collection to prove it or perhaps you’re new to the world of records and don’t know where to start, nx vinyl is the perfect place to visit! Located in the heart of downtown Norcross in the historic Cotton Gin building, owner Ron Orrell has created a community-focused record shop that blossomed from his own love of records. I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Ron to learn more about his record business and the story behind how it came to life!
125 Lawrenceville St NW Suite 300, Norcross, GA 30071 Instagram: @nxvinyl Facebook: nx vinyl
It all started for Ron when he was 5 years old and his grandmother surprised him with a Mickey Mouse record player, a gift of love to share her own affinity for music. She also gave him his first record which was Rhinestone Cowboy by Glenn Campbell. From there, Ron developed a deep love and appreciation for music and specifically records but his path in life took him in a different direction to the world of insurance. After a lengthy career in this field, he found himself wanting a change in pace, leading him to the realization that he wanted to open a record store.
Now, Ron didn’t just jump into the business, he spent time visiting different local record shops to get an understanding of how to successfully run one and once a spot in the Cotton Gin opened, his fate was sealed. In the beginning stage of his store, Ron stocked the shelves with his personal record collection but now, he shared that the store has around 10,000 records, 2,000 compact discs and 200 cassette tapes showing just how much the store has flourished since opening in April of this past year. Each record, album and basically everything else is hand picked by Ron which he achieves through the relationships he’s established with local collectors as well as his own findings. The process for finding a record to sell at this store is fairly simple as Ron explained, as he solely focuses on the condition of the record and whether it still has a jacket cover. He has a space within the store to clean records if needed before they go on the shelves.
As for the store itself, Ron has created an interactive listening space where people can become engulfed in the genres of music. In fact, he intentionally designed each room in the shop to solely focus on a genre as designated by the sign above the door. Currently, he has country, rock, jazz and international/Latin rooms. Each room has a different vibe from the decor hanging on the wall that Ron has picked out including vintage musical instruments, a chandelier with records hanging off of
it, his own posters from concerts he’s been to and other music related pieces. What truly makes each room interactive is the TV that’s set up, playing the genre of music related to the room including interviews with artists, concerts, music videos and more. As you browse through the records in each room, you may even notice that a few of the display cases look a bit strange. In the rock room particularly, if you take a closer look at the black record case in the back, you’ll see “Iron House Tavern Kissing Booth” inscribed on it. This is another unique addition to his shop that he acquired after the local business Iron Horse was throwing out their “kissing booths” which Ron repurposed with the help of one of his close friends.
Once you’ve spent some time browsing through the various rooms to pick out a record that speaks to you, Ron encourages all of his patrons to head over to the listening room and as the name suggests, sit down and listen! This ensures that you’ll be happy with the sound and quality of your record before buying it! The listening room is complete with two plush chairs along with equipment including record players, speakers and more for sale in case you don’t already have the necessary equipment to play records at home.
The one takeaway from speaking with Ron about nx vinyl is that his intention behind the store is to have a place where the community can gather and share their love of music. In fact, he shared that the support from the community including the collectors that he works with has allowed him to bring his passion for music to life. He also loves to be a part of the process of how music speaks to his patrons whether it's bringing memories back to light or perhaps fulfilling their goal of finding a particular record. So, the next time you’re in Norcross, be sure to check out nx vinyl and become transported into the world of vinyl.

ROAD TRIP AUBURN ITINERARY: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
By: Rylee Govoreau
Looking for the perfect day trip destination just a couple of hours from Atlanta? Sometimes, the best road trip destinations are closer than you think and Auburn, Alabama might just surprise you. While it’s known best as the home of Auburn University and passionate college football fans - (can I get a War Eagle?) - there’s far more to this charming Southern town than game day excitement.
Morning: Start with Flavor and Fresh Air
If you’re traveling on a Sunday, begin your Auburn adventure like a local with brunch at The Waverly Local. The seasonally-inspired menu showcases the restaurant’s Southern roots and all of their produce is sourced from local growers whenever possible. Reservations are recommended and they only offer brunch on Sundays so plan accordingly! If you’re looking for a place serving breakfast daily to truly treat your taste buds, consider Byron’s Smokehouse, another local legend. You can thank us later.
If you prefer a cozy coffeehouse vibe, head to Mama Mocha’s Coffee Emporium which is “family-owned, roasted & argued over.” This quirky spot is beloved for its bold brews and eclectic décor. Pair your coffee with one of their freshly baked pastries—you won’t regret it.
With Mama Mocha’s caffeine in hand, (or a Byron’s belly to walk off), make your way to Kiesel Park, Auburn’s largest park. Enjoy a serene walk along its trails or relax in one of the open fields, perfect for a peaceful morning outdoors. Brought your fourlegged best friend? There’s also an off-leash dog park! Hopped on the bandwagon of the pickleball craze? Us too! Catch a mid-morning pickleball game at Opelika Sportsplex - free and open to the public.
Midday: Dine and Discover
If you’re anything like us, after spending the morning exploring your appetite will be calling. For another true Auburn experience, visit The Hound. This family-owned restaurant and bar is where comfort food classics meet innovative twists on a short and simple menu that changes with the seasons. There’s a focus on bacon, bourbon and community, so don’t leave without trying their bacon flight—a crowd favorite.
After lunch, dive into Auburn’s arts and culture scene at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. The museum’s contemporary exhibitions, outdoor sculpture gardens and tranquil reflecting pond create a setting that’s both inspiring and relaxing. The focal point of the museum’s entrance is the Dale Chihuly Chandelier, made of more than 600 individual pieces of hand-blown glass.
Afternoon: Sweets and Surprises
No trip to Auburn is complete without a visit to Toomer’s Drugs, a local institution that has occupied the same corner since 1896. Ranked #1 in Esquire’s “162 Reasons It’s Good To Be An American,” famous for its lemonade and ice cream, this iconic spot offers the perfect pick-me-up as you explore downtown.
Evening: A Perfect Auburn Night
As the sun sets, treat yourself to dinner at Hamilton’s on Magnolia, where you can savor elevated Southern cuisine on their atmospheric patio. Highlights include their expertly prepared seafood and inventive cocktails.
End your day trip with a stroll through Auburn’s charming downtown. Stop by Toomer’s Corner, the iconic gathering spot for Tiger fans, and take in the small-town energy that makes Auburn so special. Auburn is more than just a college town; it’s a destination that blends Southern hospitality, scenic beauty and delightful surprises. So, pack your bags, cue up a road trip playlist, and head west—Auburn is waiting to welcome you.

Once you’ve made your selections, make sure you join the loyalty club so once you hit $75, you’ll get a $5 credit for your next purchase.
POE & COMPANY BOOKSTORE
Named after the owner’s father who had an affinity for dark mystery titles and a particular admiration of Edgar Allen Poe’s works, this bookstore has a curated collection. Nestled in downtown Milton, as you walk into this store, you can feel the community vibe. From genres such as fantasy, poetry (hint: you can buy the entire collected works of Poe), non-fiction, children's literature and others, it’s easy to spend a few hours browsing through the shelves.
CHARIS BOOKS & MORE
Located in a charming restored white house, Charis Books & More is the ideal spot for those with a strong interest in feminist literature. Their main display has a ton of highlighted works recommended by the staff but as you walk around, you’ll find that they have everything related to feminism including fun tote bags, stickers, titles and general book lovers memorabilia. As for their other genres, they certainly don’t lack in that regard as the shelves are truly stacked full of books ranging from mushroom identification to poetry and new releases plus a fun seasonal section.

After a bit of research and exploring, we’ve compiled a list of 5 unique bookstores within 50 miles of Gwinnett. Take the time to uncover the treasure trove of books unique to each place. THE BOOK BIRD
As the first independent bookstore in Avondale Estates, the Book Bird is the type of place where you can sit back, chat with friends, read or even crochet! Outside the shop, there's a ton of seating both under a covered area and not. As you walk inside the shop, you’ll see that they have a combination of crochet items and tools, books and antiques. This is because of the owner's vision to create a bookstore that fosters a community ambiance.
LITTLE SHOP OF STORIES
If you want to relive the magic of your childhood, you need to stop at Little Shop of Stories! The interior of the shop feels like you’re stepping into a children's fantasy world from colorful yellow walls with pictures of iconic children’s characters and vibrant ribbons and streamers hanging from the ceiling to an entire playhouse for kids. The playhouse is fitted with a fireplace, a painting of the beloved story The Cow Jumped Over the Moon and a secret side entrance that looks like you’re entering Platform 9 ¾. Although the store specializes in children and teen literature, they also have a plethora of titles for adults to browse through.

CAN'T MISS: THE SPORTS SHACK
INTERVIEW WITH SPORTS MEMORABILIA ENTHUSIAST JOEY CRUZ
By: Rachel Jeffers
Nestled in a shopping center off of Lanier Island Parkway in Buford, is the perfect mash-up of brains vs. brawn paraphernalia this issue has ever seen. The Sports Shack is the home of sports memorabilia, famed sports cards as well as Pokémon and Funko Pop. Nerds and sports fans are collectors alike!
What started as a hobby of sports memorabilia, turned into online wholesale and now a memorabilia company partnering with the biggest names in sports. After 5 years, Joey Cruz and Aaron Herrera opened up their brick-and-mortar shop back in 2022.
Joey and Aaron have created the business of their dreams and the shack has morphed into exactly what they envisioned. Part sports memorabilia. Part sports cards. Part man cave. Part hang out spot. Saturdays are a whirlwind of activity with a variety of customers walking through the doors all seeking a different experience. “We have TVs up with at least three different football games on at one time, with two couches and sodas for anyone not wanting to miss the game day action. We also have Pokémon league on Saturdays which brings in various people from all over the area to play,” shared Cruz.
Joey’s love of cards started at a young age, fueled by idol Uncle Bob who gifted him packs of cards during his visits every summer. Growing up in North Carolina in the 90s, he was a diehard UNC and Chicago Bulls until MJ retired, then he shifted his attention to the Charlotte Hornets. His adolescent
Q: What is your favorite/coolest item to pass through the doors of your shop?
A: “We have been very fortunate to see some very big cards in our time. Michael Jordan autographs, his rookie, as well as a few cards that sold north of 30k plus for customers through our online breaks.”
Q: What is one thing you wish you could own?
A: "A game-worn pair of MJ (Michael Jordan) signed shoes, but I would also probably find myself divorced if I did that!”
fingers opening packs of basketball, baseball and football cards brought him all the excitement and wonder similar to a Christmas morning discovering a precious treasure inside.
“Our customers are from all walks of life, careers and ages but I definitely smile inside and out when I see a young kid with the knowledge and the passion for cards. It reminds me of a younger version of me,” said Cruz.
They host 8 Pokémon League events every month (Wednesdays and Saturdays) along with “go live” broadcasts on Facebook and Whatnot featuring their current selections. They alternate from Pokémon to Sports. Stay tuned for autograph signings in the future and a video podcast with info on the card market and Pokémon as well as sports figure special guest interviews.
As for the experience, Cruz puts customer service and human interaction at the forefront. He shared that, “My entire goal in everything, life, sports, marriage, friendship, etc is all the same… Treat everyone you meet as good as possible to make sure every interaction you have is as uplifting as possible. To be genuine and pure with my intentions. And to be better than I was yesterday.”
NoRm NOT THE GWINNETT'S BEST BATHROOMS
By: Jay Ledbetter
UMAIDO: A LAP OF LUXURY
2790 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, Suwanee, GA 30024
This Suwanee ramen shop knows how to pack a punch without letting presentation get in the way of quality, and their bathrooms are no exception. Walking into this space I found a toned-down aesthetic that still remains faithful to the design and decor of the restaurant as a whole. During my visit, the conventional ambient music of your average restroom was replaced by groovy anime soundtracks, perfectly pairing with the various characters drawn on the wall of Umaido’s dining room by guests over the years. The highlight of the visit was the toilet itself, with heated seats and a remote-operated bidet. This porcelain throne was the thing that secured Umaido a spot on this list. Its comfort and functionality are truly unmatched.
Anyone can review a restaurant, but we never talk about the unsung hero of public dining: the bathrooms. I’ve inched my way across Gwinnett in search of the bathrooms that go above and beyond, creating a space of relaxation and wonder. These restaurants put in a little extra care to make using the restroom a part of the complete experience, taking the opportunity to show their guests another level of consideration and creativity. The locations below are in no particular order: they’re all number one in my heart.
LR BURGER: A NEON WONDERLAND
3151 Main St, Duluth, GA 30096
TWO CITIES PIZZA: A POCKET UNIVERSE
3433 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, Suwanee, GA 30024
Stepping into this restroom is a transportive experience. The tiles on the walls and floor are fun and creative, prompting guests to use this time to ponder the abstract concepts of life while completing a mundane task. The red lighting makes this space an escape from reality, where I could go to shed the weight of the world and take comfort in the affectionate praise put upon me by the neon signs that coat the room in its signature scarlet hues. To the naked eye, the signs were backward but they became legible in the mirror as I washed my hands. Both were delightful double entendres: one with the short and sweet “Nice Buns”, the other offering the body-positive “Suns Out Buns Out”. I never knew furniture could be so flirty.
My excitement about this restroom began with the sign: large subway-style iconography and lettering guiding you to your destination as though you were rushing to hop on the next train. This serves as the ideal primer, leading you into a bathroom that is dedicated to representing its inspirations well. The mirror is shaped like a subway window, little hand hooks hang from the ceiling, and the wall next to the sink has a map of New York’s subway system. This restroom blew me away with its execution of a creative concept that perfectly matches the restaurant’s inspirations.
WEI: A TOUCH OF FLAIR
3320 Buford Dr #40, Buford, GA 30519
There are many places to use the bathroom in and around the Mall of Georgia, and Wei is no exception. The sculpted, waving wall decor speaks of a bathroom with an elevated character without being overwhelming to the eyes. The abstract, almost Dadaist faucet stands out as something worth visiting for. Its angular, sidepouring faucet and metal dial give guests a break from the boring two-handled sink with a basic arched spout, and the sink’s depth gave me plenty of space to wash up without water spilling around.
NOTICE A NEW FACE IN TOWN?
Meet Norm! This oddball worm was recently dug up by our DiG team and is here to report on all things strange and unusual in Gwinnett.
