CAWS has business as its cause  DI BARTOK ESTERN SYDNEY business owners are set to have a united voice in urban planning and development following the launch of the Chamber Alliance of Western Sydney (CAWS). The organisation was launched at Alpha Hotel, Eastern Creek on October 21. CAWS brings together all the chambers of commerce in Western Sydney and marks a turning point in the way small and medium businesses engage with State and Federal Governments on major infrastructure projects and other issues. The formation of the chamber alliance, until now low-key, followed an April 2018 roundtable with Mitchell MP Alex Hawke and thenFederal Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher on the opinions of business owners on the Western Sydney City Deal and more specifically rail infrastructure projects in the Greater West. Mr Hawke had called together the chambers in Parramatta, Blacktown, the HIlls and Riverstone for the roundtable discussion. CAWS president Trevor Oldfield said it was the first time small and medium business owners had been asked how infrastructure and urban planning impacted them. “From this small roundtable of 20, we quickly mobilised into formation of a group that brought together all the chambers,” Mr Oldfield said.

chants, as well as the community, to have their say in the future of Western Sydney. “Projects at all levels, local, State and Federal, affect us all and there should be a united voice, not just the interests of the corporate sector,” Mr Oldfield said. While the group came out of the meeting with Hawke and Fletcher, no politician was invited to the launch as the CAWS executive did not want to “make it political”, Mr Oldfield said. Since forming in May 2018, CAWS has met every month and has elected as its executive, Trevor Oldfield as president, Richard Holland vice-president, Eric Tjoeng treasurer and Livia Janovics public officer/secretary.

“We could see there was a distinct opportunity to continue this conversation not only on key infrastructure but potentially on a range of issues affecting Greater Western Sydney.” Mr Oldfield said that there had been earlier informal discussions on chambers forming a united group but the approach of Mr Hawke was the impetus they needed. “Up until now, there had been no one body that represented the needs and views of small to medium-sized businesses in regard to projects affecting us all, so it is long overdue,” he said. Making the most of our waste  RED DWYER IRLINE passengers landing on recycled rock and car drivers travelling on ground glass are not attributes a potential “21st century city” would wish to be known

A for.

But that’s happening in the Western Parkland City and the authorities are not fazed; they welcome it. Sydney Metro is currently transporting crushed sandstone to the Western Sydney International Airport under construction at Badgerys Creek. In all, some 500,000 tonnes will be moved west to Sydney’s newest economic hub. Sydney Metro aims to reuse 100 per cent of crushed sandstone during excavation of the

15.5-kilometre twin railway tunnels between Chatswood and Marrickville. “This high-quality sandstone will be used as a high-strength foundation to support the construction of the runway, taxiways and roads on site,” said Graham Millett, CEO, Western Sydney Airport Mr Millet said it was about sustainability and efficiency, reusing resources and reducing carbon emissions. “It is a great example of how we can make the most of Sydney’s infrastructure boom, not only to save taxpayer funds but also to cut down on waste,” he said As for the ground class project, Penrith City Council said around 50 tonnes, the equivalent of 227,200 stubbies, would be used for street paving Asphalt uses sand in the road paving mix

but council general manager, Warwick Winn, said the use of “glassphalt” – using recycled stubbies – showed council was continuing to embrace more sustainable practices whenever possible. That was a better use outcome than the glass ending up as landfill council said. “Council’s tendered road service contractor, St Marys-based State Asphalt Services, recently upgraded its plant to make glassphalt, and so we are trialling their product now that it is available,” Mr Winn said. “In an average year, council resurfaces or reconstructs some 30 kilometres of roads and by increasing the use of glassphalt rather than asphalt, we will be doing a lot to reduce the amount of waste glass in landfill,” he said. The international airport and the Badgerys Creek Aerotropolis will be the catalysts in the

creation of Western Parkland City serving the demands of well over 1.5 million people in the long term. It will be a polycentric city built on the strengths and attributes of three established centres: Liverpool, Greater Penrith and Campbelltown-Macarthur.

NSW welcomes 16 new fire fighters IXTEEN new fire fighters will enhance the safety of communities across NSW after graduating from the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Emergency Services Academy in Western Sydney. Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the recruits and welcomed them into the firefighting family. “The 16 firefighters have signed up for one of the most demanding and important roles in our community and will soon take up positions at fire stations,” Mr Elliott said. These recruits bring diverse backgrounds to their new role which include a former chef, correctional

officer, Army parachute rigger, police officer, carpenter, photographer, ski instructor and heavy plant operator. FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the graduates had proven their abilities over months of intense training. “These recruits have shown they have the diverse skills, capabilities and talents required to undertake the varied work that our firefighters do–from educating the community about fire safety and providing emergency medical care to responding to natural disasters and rescue incidents,” Mr Baxter said. This is the third FRNSW graduation in 2019 with another ceremony scheduled for later in the year to bolster frontlines across the State.

Bankwest hosts its first concert, with pre-sales tickets now available. “Iconic Aussie bands Cold Chisel and Hoodoo Gurus will rock Bankwest on January 24 next year, to kick-start the Australia Day weekend,” said Mr Lee. “The steepest grandstands in the country will get music fans closer to the action than ever before.” Venues NSW CEO, Paul Doorn said there is a big buzz around Bankwest Stadium’s first concert. “The versatility of Bankwest Stadium is one of the best assets of this wonderful piece of infrastructure built by the NSW Government,” said Mr Doorn. “It can be transformed from a sporting cauldron to a concert arena very quickly and the feedback we get from fans, players and sporting codes is brilliant.” Economic analysis undertaken by Micromex Research revealed three sporting events at the Stadium generated an estimated total of $2.92M for the Parramatta Local Government Area this year. A separate report released by City of Parramatta Council showed Parramatta’s local economy gets a million-dollar boost every time an event is held at the new Bankwest Stadium.

The first 25 vehicles will be built in Germany as part of the technology transfer process, with the remaining vehicles to be built at the company’s specialised Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence in Queensland. Boxer will replace the ageing vehicles that have served with the Australian Army in East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Thomas Global deal expects to generate 20 jobs and demonstrate how Western

Eat St precinct to stay open NNOVATIVE technology and inventive engineering will be used during major construction of the Parramatta Light Rail to minimise disruption to businesses along Eat Street. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said customers will also enjoy an additional four months of outdoor dining before hoardings go up. “We’ve guaranteed major construction in Eat Street won’t start until 2020 ensuring visitors can enjoy the precinct during summer without construction hoardings.” The Parramatta Light Rail construction plan will see Church Street closed to car traffic from1 February 2020, from the Riverside Theatre to Centenary Square, including the Eat Street dining strip. After this, the construction team will establish mobile work sites and temporary hoardings along Church Street, with major construction to start in June.

I

Also from February, a micro-tunnelling machine (around 1.5 metres in diameter) will construct drainage beneath the street from Centenary Square to the Parramatta River–intended to reduce noise and impact compared to street-level works. Parramatta Light Rail infrastructure works contractors Parramatta Connect (CPB Downer Joint Venture) are using augmented reality and digital 3D technology to map more than300 utility services, which will provide real-time updates to inform construction planning. Member for Parramatta Geoff Lee said a construction grace period had also been introduced by Transport for NSW so businesses can benefit from the busier summer trading period. Macquarie, George, Philip and Market Streets will remain open to vehicles to keep the Parramatta CBD moving during construction.

The awards are an initiative by Western Sydney Women (WSW), supported by Kate Carnell AO, Ombudsman, Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise. “Geography has for too long considered to be destiny, and this has disadvantaged women in locations such as western Sydney. But women from these areas should have as many oppor-tunities as everyone else, and this is being fostered by Western Sydney Women, which aims to help women in the region advance their businesses and career paths, and provide a net-work of support for each other, creating generational change,” Ms Carnell said. “The Western Sydney’s Outstanding Women Awards not only spotlights the impressive work & achievements of the winners but highlights the potential of all women who live & work in the greater western Sydney region.”

Western Sydney businesses find value in untapped talent pool What does a chicken shop, a bridal boutique and a gym have in common? All three have discovered the benefits of hiring workers with disability. “Smart business owners are realising the advantages of hiring people who happen to have a disability,’ said Mohamed Bah, Manager NOVA Employment Parramatta. “We make is easy for Employers. We get to know you, your business and what the role entails, and then we match that with people who have the necessary skills,’ explains Mohamed. ‘We save business owners the hassle of advertising by pre-screening and providing a short-list of candidates,’ adds Mohamed. “We’ve found staff for all kinds of businesses. Cleaning companies, real estate agents, bridal shops, gyms, trades and apprenticeships. You name it.’ Angela Vassallo, co-owner of family run Vasco’s Charcoal Chicken on Church street Parramatta hired a kitchen hand who has become an integral part of the team. “Scott is hard working, committed and reliable,’ said Angela. “He’s everything you would want in an employee.” Scott, who lives with autism, is responsible for a variety of tasks said Angela: “Anything to stocking the drinks, making wraps, serving, cleaning and ongoing jobs that are very helpful in the flow at Vasco’s.” WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS ACCESS NOVEMBER 2019

The benefits are not just one-sided. Scott says this job has been life-changing for him. “I love working in the kitchen with John and Sash’ said Scott of his co-workers. They are a great team.” Scott, who was previously unemployed for two years said, “working at Vasco’s has made me more motivated and confident in general.” “I am more enthusiastic about life whereas before I got this job, I was having some depression just sitting at home. Now, I am much more social too,” adds Scott who is eager to learn new skills in food preparation. Vasco’s Charcoal Chicken is one of 87 local businesses who have hired during NOVA Employment’s annual ‘100 jobs in 100 days’ campaign, which is aimed at bringing awareness to the abilities of people with disability. With just nine days remaining of the 100 day long campaign which launched in July, Angela wants other businesses to give hiring people with disability a go. “I definitely recommend other businesses look past the disability and focus on ‘abilities’ when hiring, because everybody has something to offer,” said Angela, who hired Scott three months ago. If you are looking for hard working reliable staff contact Mohamed Bah to book a FREE consultation via email mohamed.bah@novaemployment.com.au or phone 0415 805 086.

How Greg took the HR plunge  TERRY COLLINS FTER holding senior HR and organisation development roles in large organisations such as the Forestry Corporation of NSW and Catholic Health Care Services, Greg Mitchell decided to take the plunge in 2007 and open his own human resources company. The result was HR Success, based in Western Sydney and servicing clients from across the Greater Sydney Region and sometimes beyond. “After travelling and working outside my local area for some years, I wanted to work in and become more a part of my local community,” Mr Mitchell said. “In the back of my mind, I’d always also had a desire to one day start my own business. “I’d thought about it a few times over my career but there came a point at which I ran out of reasons not to do it – the time was right, and HR Success was the result. “It’s been great to have that local involvement, meet plenty of good people and make some great friends in the process. “The adjustment to working with smaller, local businesses was significant in the early days, but I’ve no regrets – it’s been an interesting ride that’s for sure.”

Experienced team The three-person team, which also includes experienced professionals Margot Gallagher and Jay Heald, is dedicated to helping business owners and managers achieve Success Through People. “While successful businesses also need to have sound financial management, efficient process for delivering quality products/ser-

vices, effective marketing and sales functions and the like, none of it happens without the right people doing the right things at the right time,” Mr Mitchell said. “That’s why we’re passionate about helping businesses manage their people effectively – they are the drivers, the engine room, the determinants of business success.” Depending on the needs of the client, the company will often utilise their exclusive 8

Elements to Success through People model as a means to assess current people management practices within a business and identify and prioritise strategies that can make a real and significant difference to profitability, culture and ongoing success. “The differences between workplaces have always intrigued me,” Mr Mitchell said. “Some workplaces are filled with people enthusiastically working together, providing

exceptional products and services and achieving great things. “You visit other workplaces and you just know that something’s not quite right; the team’s not engaged, they’re not working well together, the quality of products and services is not quite where it needs to be and/or the business is facing some tough times. “The tag-line that accompanies our logo is Success through People, because at the end of the day we firmly believe that sustainably successful businesses consist of great people being led, managed and working together in a way that sets the foundation for their mutual success.” The company has recently also launched Short N Sharp Training, designed to provide businesses in Western Sydney with access to professional, costeffective in-house team training. The HR Success team will come to your workplace and conduct a two-hour session providing essential information and skills in a specific subject area. “This is long enough for your team to gain the knowledge and skills they need, but not too long for them to be away from the front line of your business,” Mr Mitchell said. “Participants get just what they need, without the waffle and without the fluff.” Full details can be found at www.shortnsharptraining. com.au. M

Steps to IT Risk Management To mitigate the risks that accompany any problems with your IT infrastructure, you need to go through a few key steps that will help you come up with a strategy that will protect your business from serious damage should an IT incident occur. Here’s what you need to do. 1. Identify IT Infrastructure Risks Your first step to coming up with a strategy is to identify what could possibly go wrong. This should be a list where you explore all possibilities of “What if.” Such as, “What if an employee lost their laptop with sensitive business information on it?” or “What if our power went out at the office for over 24 hours due to a storm?” Mapping out all the things that could possibly put your technology at risk, will allow you to then identify ways to mitigate the risk of

something happening and come up with plan that will get you back up and running quickly. Some of the “What ifs” might be: • Breach of your network and customer data. • Virus or malware infection. • Accidental or malicious deletion of company files. • Lost or stolen devices. • Hardware failures. • Security breaches due to unapplied operating system or software patches. • Downtime of a major cloud service (like Office 365 or Slack). • Your internet service provider goes down due to a natural disaster. 2. Analyse All Risks Now that you’ve written down what could possibly go wrong with your technology you

want to take some time to analyse each of the risks. Each risk will have different consequences and mitigation factors. For example, a way to deal with a hardware failure would be to sign on to a proactive managed services plan, which could predict ahead of time when you need a part replaced to eliminate the risk of it causing downtime. But for something like a natural disaster, while you can plan for it, it’s much more difficult to predict ahead of time and you can’t really stop it from happening. 3. Rank Your Risk Factors According to Severity You’re going to want to address the most severe risk first in any IT risk mitigation plan, so in order to do that strategically, you need to rank each risk according to how it could impact your business and how likely it is to occur.

Phishing remains the number one cause of data breaches, and we already know that data breaches and their resulting downtime can be costly to businesses, so protection from phishing attacks would most likely have a high ranking on your risk list. While something like an employee lost device, might be lower if you already have a mobile management tool in place. 4. Create Your Risk Response Plans This where ranking is going to help you most, because it will give you a strategy to follow when creating an IT Risk Response Plan for each risk factor. You’ll start with the highest ranked risks first and then work your way down. Your response plans should be as detailed as possible and should include things such as: • What you can do to reduce the risk factor. • Steps your employees should take if the event occurs. • Detailed contact and responsibility plans, so everyone knows who is doing what. • Desired timeline for getting your IT back online. • Reporting requirements for identifying steps taken during the outage. 5. Continually Monitor for Risk and Review your Response Plan After you’ve completed your Risk Response Plan, you want to begin implementing the mitigation activities that you identified. This may be signing up for a managed IT security plan to reduce your chance of a network breach or putting employee training in place to help identify phishing emails. The Dialogue

www.wsba.com.au

Where top decision makers meet ď Ž ADAM LETO HIS month the Dialogue will present our annual BOOMTOWN Summit where we will host the top decision makers in NSW. Those people responsible for your commute to work will take centre stage and you’re invited too. Addresses by both the Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance, and the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes, are headlining our annual conference program this year. It kicks off on Friday, November 29 and we hope you’ll be there to hear their insight into a range of issues that impact work and life in our region. As I mentioned last month, the Dialogue will host Premier Glady Berejiklian at BOOMTOWN as part of our Infrastructure Dinner. To be held the night before, it will see some important discussions tabled around property, transport and infrastructure trends in Western Sydney. We’ll also get the Premier’s update on some major recent announcements. Transport, both now and in the future, remains top of mind for decision makers, businesses and workers alike. Plans for Sydney Metro West released recently offer the business sector of Western Sydney the level of connectivity needed for continued success. The Metro West is arguably Sydney’s most transformative infrastructure project and the recent announcement created major national interest. The Dialogue believes this project is just as significant as the Western Sydney Airport. It stands as an absolute game changer not just for our region, but all of Sydney. The location of the seven new Metro stations, and potentially others at Rydalmere and

T

Pyrmont, is of the upmost interest. Local and global businesses, educational institutions and government departments are assessing their investments based on the new metro plans. Metro West will bring Parramatta and the Sydney CBD much closer together. It will place Sydney Olympic Park within 15 minutes of the CBD and 10 minutes from downtown Parramatta. This is a fundamental shift in the economic geography of Sydney, opening swathes of the city to 30-minute access to jobs. While we tend to focus on the journey to work for commuters, the benefits for businessto-business travel provided by this project shouldn’t be overlooked.

Steroid Injection The way we conceive Sydney’s “Central Business District will change, and there will be tighter integration of the GPOP corridor with the CBD and eastern economic arc over time. With Metro West providing a steroid injection for GPOP, we must also turn our attention to the commuter experience of the Central City – the 30-minute city surrounding GPOP. To get full value out of the investment, the networks feeding into the east-west spine need to improve. Recent figures show vehicles are, for now at least, the most popular mode of transport for travel to work. In fact, 59% of workers use vehicles in their commute. As we know, many commuters use cars in Western Sydney, and that is mainly due to limitations with other options and the nature of their employment. Theoretically, Metro West will alleviate pressure on Parramatta Road and Victoria Road, but congestion and capacity constraints on the region’s key north-south connections

“

The Dialogue believes the Metro West project is just as significant as the Western Sydney Airport. Airport. - Adam Leto. will remain. A congested Central City amplifies congestion across Sydney and inhibits travel across the metropolis. Infrastructure Australia has listed the upgrade to the capacity of the A3 and A6 corridor as a priority initiative. Both these major arterial roads provide important connections for people and trade carrying 163,500 vehicles per day between them at their busiest points. The Future Transport strategy has flagged a potential future motorway-grade road link parallel to the A3 corridor, which along with the longer-term Kogarah Parramatta-Epping rail project would serve to recalibrate Sydney on a north-south axis and not simply the eastwest connectivity axis line that has dominated urban planning and infrastructure development for 200 years. Increasing car parking at train stations has been invested in as a solution by both State and Federal Governments to increase patron-

age of public transport and to reduce road congestion. This investment is welcome, however the longer-term economics around carparks poses serious questions on the viability of carparks procured today as a solution to future congestion. Of course, there is a $20B question underpinning all of this. We’ve always been of the view that, given its national significance, Metro West should be part-funded by the Federal Government. In a slowing economy, this is a shovel-ready project that will provide a much-needed boost, and importantly, help speed up the project’s delivery. Something that will help many workers in Western Sydney to get to work on time. Adam Leto is executive director of the Western Sydney Dialogue. Visit: www.westernsydney.org.au

Artist impression of the stops along the Western Sydney Metro.

Linking Parramatta to Sydney CBD ONSTRUCTION will soon begin on the Western Sydney Metro, with seven station locations confirmed. The project that will slash travel times between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD down to around 20 minutes. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said construction work will begin next year, commencing at the Bays Precinct, to prepare the site for major tunnelling works.

C

In addition to becoming the easiest and fastest way to travel between these two cities, the project is also anticipated to create approximately 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs.” - Andrew Constance. “The Western Sydney Metro will fundamentally change how we get around our city for generations to come, connecting Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD with fast, safe and reliable metro rail,” Ms Berejiklian said. “We’ve successfully delivered the North West Metro Line early and $1M under budget, the next line from Chatswood to Sydnenham and Bankstown is on track to open in 2024, and now the next Metro project is underway.” The first works in the Bays Precinct will

include site surveys, investigations and early works such as road relocation. The locations of seven proposed Metro stations have been confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and the Bays Precinct. The NSW Government will also fast-track work to investigate the feasibility of building a Metro station in Pyrmont, while also assessing a potential station at Rydalmere. Further work is also underway to determine the location of the new Metro station in the Sydney CBD.

Project team The project team has started informing affected property owners and tenants. The preference is always to reach a commercial agreement, with compulsory acquisition a last resort. Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said the project team has been talking to

communities along the alignment since 2016. Details of the exact station locations are now available on the Sydney Metro website. “Western Sydney Metro will more than double the existing rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD and slash travel times between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD to around 20 minutes,” Mr Constance said. With the T1 Western Line and the T9 Northern Line expected to reach capacity within the next decade, the NSW Government’s commitment to fund this project ensures that tomorrow’s Sydney has the infrastructure it needs to keep moving. “In addition to becoming the easiest and fastest way to travel between these two cities, the project is also anticipated to create approximately 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs,” Mr Constance said. At Parramatta, the new Metro station will serve the commercial core of the Parramatta

CBD to the north of the existing train station. Sydney Olympic Park, which is visited by more than 10 million people each year, will also get a second railway station within walking distance of ANZ Stadium in the heart of the growing town centre, reinforcing its status as Australia’s premier events, sporting and entertainment precinct. The NSW Government has today also announced that it is kicking off a global search for suppliers capable of building more than 50 kilometres of new Metro railway tunnels connecting the two centres – the longest railway tunnels ever built in Australia, in what is expected to be the biggest tunnelling contract awarded in Australian history. Suppliers wishing to express their interest in the procurement of the tunnelling contract for Western Sydney Metro will be able to register their interest on the eTendering website from tomorrow.

COMMITTED TO INNOVATION AND GROWTH Cumberland Business Chamber (CBC), member owned and operated organisation is committed to the development of innovation and business growth. Strong advocates for the Australian manufacturing industry, we are a solutions-focused group who support new ideas and business relationships. With connections across Greater Western Sydney, the Cumberland Business Chamber believes that innovation and real leadership can transform the Australian business landscape. PMG CEO Jason Elias (left) with Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price and a Rheinmetall representative at the launch.

PMG plays key role in Boxer 8x8 delivery  TERRY COLLINS PRECISION Metal Group (PMG) has played a pivotal role in the delivery of the first of 211 new Boxer 8x8 CRVs to the Australian Army. Delivered by Rheinmetall Defence Australia under the $5B Land 400 Phase 2 Mounted Combat Reconnaissance Capability program, the Boxer arrived in Brisbane In July. Wetherill Park based PMG is one of seven small business to have been contracted for the supply for the first 25 vehicles, which will be assembled in Germany and delivered to Australia as part of technology transfer activities to familiarise Australian workers and suppliers on the specific manufacturing techniques of the vehicles. PMG Chief Executive Officer Jason Elias said the company had opened new roles for the project. “We will continue our expansion into defence, opening up another 15 roles in mid2020,” Mr Elias said. Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds said the Boxers, with their high levels of protection, firepower and mobility, would provide a world-class capability to the Australian Army. “[These vehicles] will be able to undertake a range of missions, from regional stability and peacekeeping through to high-threat operations and will provide improved safety to Australian soldiers on deployment and on ex-

ercises around the world,” Ms Reynolds said. “This project presents an exciting opportunity for Australian industry to play a vital role in delivering leading-edge capability and technology to Australia’s Army.” Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said over the 30-year life of the vehicles, Australian industry would secure $10.2B of the total investment in acquiring and maintaining the fleet. Minister Price said 12 small businesses across Australia would contribute to the Boxer program overall. Following delivery of the first 25 vehicles, the remainder will be assembled at Rheinmetall’s Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence facility in Redbank, near Ipswich, using companies located across Australia, including PMG, which will provide prototype bracketry. Rheinmetall Defence Australia managing director Gary Stewart said the benefits to Australian business would be ongoing. “Rheinmetall is committed to growing an Australian sovereign military vehicle capability and to have that centred in the most advanced military vehicle manufacturing facility in the country will make it a real asset of national significance,” he said. Rheinmetall is also shortlisted for Phase 3 of the Land 400 tender, and if successful, would manufacture 400 infantry fighting vehicles at its site near Ipswich.

An Incredible ROI… “Being a member of the Cumberland Business Chamber has helped me change the culture of my business. This is about more than finding customers. I have met people who inspired and equipped me to take my business to another level. I doubt that I would have done it on my own but they gave me the motivation, confidence and expertise that I needed. I know that this is about long-term improvement not a quick-fix, so with patience and regular participation in the Chamber I have received an incredible return on my investment – including the opportunity to be interviewed by economist and media personality Ross Greenwood.”

Love of SMEs inspired big event I T all started back in February 2019, where Managing Director Robert Theodoridis along-side with his partner Connie Vlassopoulos attended Mr Mark Bouris’s Master Class at the Star. They were that inspired by his presentation, that they knew it was their purpose to have him as their special guest at the Business after 5 that they were hosting in October 2019. “It all started with a thought to provide back to the Business community of Greater Western Sydney.” said Managing Director, Robert Theodoridis. That thought then became a reality and in conjunction with the Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, Mark Bouris was invited to present his wisdom and knowledge to over 200 guests on October 22 at the Blacktown RSL Club. “Many months of preparation and hard work went into planning for the event, to ensure that everyone who attended would go home as inspired as Connie and I,” said Robert. “The night would not have been possible without the amazing assistance of our wonderful staff, Anna and Emmanuel Theodoridis, Dave Power from Power Creative, Benjamin Herring from Sound Productions, Chris Hekeik from Modemedia, the Blacktown RSL, the Greater Blacktown Business Chamber, The Fordham Company and lastly the man himself Mr Mark Bouris.”

“I wanted to do something completely different and to inspire employees and SMEs through my personal experience and Mark’s passion of giving back.” Both Rob and Connie have a passion for SMEs and believe that SMEs are the driving hub for the Australian economy, especially in the Greater Western Sydney were there has been such rapid growth. On the night, Mark provided guests with an insight to his Playbook for success which had never been presented before. He left the crowd inspired and motivated, with many guests explaining that they will be implementing the key concepts that were presented to them by Mark. For more information about Marks digital Playbook for success visit his website at www.mentored. com.au With the event being such a huge success, Sydney Electrical Contractors are now busy planning for their next big event, which will be held sometime in 2020.

SCHON CONDON

P

ARRAMATTA Chamber of Commerce (PCC) would like to congratulate all the winners of the 2019 Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence, or more affectionately Winners of the 2019 WSABEs! You have certainly demonstrated that you are all leaders in what Australia’s most significant business and industrial powerhouse is. PCC in association with its sponsors and supporters is very proud to have hosted what can only be referred to as a celebration of all that is good in the greater Western Sydney Region. The focal point of such Awards is certainly to recognise the successful leaders in their respective fields who were tonight presented with their Awards, but that is not the only success that we celebrate. Now it its 29th year the awards have continually seen not only a steady increase in the number of applications, but also significant gains in the quality of the submissions and the organisations that are being considered for that pinnacle, the WSABE Trophy.

Future success Thus, whilst we do acknowledge the winners, it is also appropriate to acknowledge all those that made the competition so tough, those businesses that have striven to grow and improve and who, whilst certainly successful, were just not quite at that pinnacle. We look forward to your future submissions and success. The Awards in themselves are, without doubt, a driver of success in what can truly be

regarded as one of the most significant powerhouses of the Australian economy, Greater Western Sydney, which has Parramatta as its focal point. It is a region that is finally being properly recognised, and as such the region is now drawing significant investment not only into the services and facilities that the region will offer, but also significant development and construction. We have not ignored this growth and as such are proud to have included a further two categories into the Awards this year, being

Excellence in Retail and Excellence in Micro Business. These new awards reflect the overall changing nature of the Region as well as recognising a broader range of potential candidates, not simply owners of businesses. It is clear that the WSABE’s are truly the Awards for this Region, our Region. Without sponsors events like this simply cannot happen. Thus we also proudly acknowledge the significant support of our Sponsors, in particular the Commonwealth Bank as principal partner, major sponsor City

As the awards have grown their reach has extended further into the Greater Western Sydney Region, and because of this we have experienced a strengthening of the professional relationships within the region. Consequently, we would also like to acknowledge the input and support of the Chambers of Commerce from Greater Blacktown, Canterbury Bankstown, Sydney Hills, Liverpool, Penrith Valley, CAWS and NSWBC who gave their support to the success of these Award’s. It has truly been a team effort. In closing I would like to the team behind the event that ensured the success of the Award’s process and gala as a leading Western Sydney icon. To the judges for their efforts and expertise, the committee chairs Roy who guided the committee and its ancillaries, to particularly Romina, together with Louise and Jenna from our office, and finally to Sonia and her team at Gandhi Creations. Finally, my thanks to all in Western Sydney that support, contribute to and make Western Sydney what it truly is; the best place in Australia to work, grow, share, and live! Mindworx gets how the mind works

IFE often can be challenging, and it is normal to feel some anxiety and sadness from time to time. But sometimes those feelings can be overwhelming, spoiling your quality of life your family life and work life. It is when our relationships and work-life, or our child’s school life, are affected that we may be drawn to seek professional counselling. The team of professional psychologists and Mindworx understand the ups and downs of life and how problems can be nipped in the bud before they impact lives too much. With families of their own, Mindworx’s psychologists understand the challenges life brings – and just how important good mental health is at all stages of life. The award-winning practice has been built on a commitment to gold standard therapies and to evidence-based treatments that work. Mindworx takes great pride in knowing that most of its referrals are word-of-mouth recommendations. The team at Mindworx.

Mindworx services • Assessment, treatment and counselling services. • Psychometric testing. • Evidence based treatments for a range of mental health issues. • Individual or group programs for anxiety and panic disorders, depression and mood disorders, ADHD (and ADD), sleep problems, eating disorders, and much more. • Psychotherapy and counselling services for children, adolescents and adults.

Mindworx Psychology combines the latest research with the science of psychology, and adds a pinch of positive attitude. “By approaching problems such as anxiety, panic, stress, ADHD, behaviour problems or depression holistically, as psychologists we are willing to look both inside and outside the box for solutions to your problems,” Mindworx director and founder Dr Amanda Mullin said. “Current research tells us that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a gold standard treatment for a range of psychological issues such as stress, depression and anxiety. This type of therapy tackles the physical symptoms

of anxiety and depression (like the racing heart, appetite changes, fatigue, or the changes in sleep), as well as targeting the unhelpful thoughts and the unhelpful behaviours that can maintain the disorders.” Amanda stressed that one therapy doesn’t fit everyone, so her psychologists are experienced in a range of therapies apart from CBT. Those therapeutic approaches include narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy, psycho-dynamic therapy, solution focused therapy, mindfulness-based therapies and eye movement therapies.

About Dr Amanda Mullin: a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, and a Clinical Psychologist with extensive training in Clinical Psychology, Amanda is well-known for her work as a keynote speaker, workshop presenter and performance coaching work which sits uniquely with her clinical psychology skills. She has worked with a wide range of clients in private practice and completed extended training at the Macquarie University Centre for Emotional Health, a world leading research clinic which specialises in understanding the causes of anxiety, and developing highly effective treatments for anxiety disorders. Amanda founded Mindworx Psychology in 2014 with a focus on building a centre of excellence for mental health assessment and treatment in Sydney Hills District, within a private, confidential and friendly space that worked for the whole family – mum, dad and child – across the lifespan from child to older adult. Staying ATOP education

ERYL Novice started ATOP Education 10 years ago, after 23 years with a franchise that she had built up to 500 students. Teacher Beryl was unhappy that the franchise limited her to teaching only Maths and English. “As my university background was in Science (including Psychology and Computer Science), I felt that I could be teaching on a much wider scale and could include the STEM subjects, which are my passion,” Beryl said. Beryl’s tutoring business has the motto is “Helping to make Australia the Clever Country” and this is her driving ambition. “We have a policy of not having more than four students per tutor and this enables one on one teaching,” Beryl said. “Each student has their own individual program which we design from their original test when joining with us. From there, it is closely monitored. Our programs go that extra distance; we include philosophy with the science topics, special emphasis on problem solving in maths, a comprehensive phonics program for the young and include General Ability with English for those aspiring students who are aiming for high exam results. “Our tutors are chosen from top performing university students.”

ATOP’s programs can also be flexible for those with learning problems. One student, who was diagnosed as being on ‘the spectrum’ when he started school, has now gone on to selective school. “Having studied maths, English, coding and robotics with us for nearly four years, he recently topped his year and was told by his teacher that she expects him to do his H.S.C. in year 11 as he is so far in front. It is a joy to see these children reaching their potential,” Beryl said. www.atopeducation.com.au

Cookware that is TOXIN FREE

T was her family’s experience with health problems that encouraged Judith Viado to invest in toxic-free cookware. As co-founder of Nutricraft, which sells premium non-toxic cookware, Judith could not believe how conventional cookware was literally poisoning people. It was the skin condition and lactose intolerance that her 14-year old son had since birth and the more recent heart scare of her husband that spurred Judith on to investigate a healthier way of cooking. Concern over her family’s health came to a head 10 years ago when Judith and her husband, then living in Singapore, visited a friend for their wedding in Australia. Her husband’s blood pressure skyrocketed, leading to a heart check-up. While he has recovered, Judith was shaken about the health of her family. “I had literally tried everything to help my family’s health and things seemed to be getting worse,” Judith said. “It wasn’t until six years ago that we were introduced to the importance of cookware and how not having the right cookware can lead to toxins literally leaking into the food that we eat. I was shocked, and I couldn’t believe that this kind of thing could happen in our society and the presentation answered many of my questions about the problems that my family had been facing. I decided to change all our cookware and within just one year, all of the health problems my family had been facing had disappeared.” Judith and her husband started wondering if there were other families experiencing the same problems.

I have dedicated my life to offer the highest quality cookware at an affordable rate for all Australian families.” - Judith Viado.

Judith Viado with her health-boosting cookware.

Mission to educate “Do they know that their cookware could be affecting their health?” Judith and her husband asked. “We thought that if it helped us, it could help others too - so we made it a mission to educate as many Aussie families as possible. “What I discovered is that there are other families out there possibly poisoning their families because they are simply not aware of this issue, they may be struggling in the dark as I was about why they are facing these health problems, not knowing the solution for it.”

Judith and her husband started an Australian owned premium non-toxic cookware brand, Nutricraft, that protects the integrity of the food nutrients to ensure meals are healthy, nutritious and non-toxic. “Nutricraft provides hope for those suffering already and prevention of diet-related diseases like cancer, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and digestive problems,” Judith said. “My entire family go out to teach and show people how to prepare meals and cook food in a very healthy way - no oil, no salt, no sugar, no

artificial seasoning, no contamination just in its pure form and natural flavour of ingredients with maximum nutritional value,” she added. Nutricraft cookware is made from the finest American titanium steel honed by generations of skilled cookware makers, brought to the Australian market by Judith and her husband. “We carry an extensive product line of greaseless and waterless cookware to promote health and nutrition to Australians and the rest of the world,” Judith said. “I have dedicated my life to offer the highest quality cookware at an affordable rate for all Australian families.” Nutricraft: P: 045 220 4900, www.nutricraftcookware.com

First responders make the difference

Michael Hughes Foundation teaches CPR to help save lives.

Council support Julie Hughes with Parramatta Deputy Lord Mayor Michelle Garrard, getting councils onside to install defibrillators at sportsgrounds.

T

HE Michael Hughes Foundation was named after a much-loved husband and father who died suddenly of a cardiac arrest at home in Dundas in 2013. His wife Julie, who used CPR on her husband, vowed to fight to have defibrillators installed in sporting grounds and community halls across Sydney’s west, as well as conduct first aid courses. The young mother had learned CPR a short time before, shortly after her daughter was born, but she did not think she would have to use it on her husband as he was only in his 40s. Mrs Hughes, knowing that cardiac

arrests can happen without warning, feels that everyone should be able to be a “first responder” when faced with someone needing first aid. In a media interview soon after setting up the Foundation, Mrs Hughes stressed how important the first eight minutes after someone has a cardiac arrest were. “Brain function decreases by 10 per cent for every minute a person does not have blood pumping around their body,” Mrs Hughes said. “To make the critical difference we need to have people nearby able to being CPR and use the AED within the first few minutes.”

Several councils have installed defibrillators and, along with the State Government, have helped fund first aid training sessions. Mrs Hughes was awarded Parramatta Citizen of the Year in 2016. Today, the Foundation is as strong as ever, and more relevant than ever. There are 33,000 out of hospital events of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) each year in Australia Out of hospital survival rates for SCA is currently less than 9 percent and success declines at a rate of 10 percent with each minute delayed. Without early CPR and defibrillation, brain damage can occur after 4 minutes. After 8 minutes there is little chance of survival

Average response times of NSW Ambulance is between 9 and 11 minutes. The Michael Hughes Foundation delivers accredited first aid training courses on behalf of Healthcorp, RTO 9122. Statements of attainment will be issued to each participant through our RTO. To enquire about a course or make a booking, contact: Kevin McSweeney, Director: kevin@mhf.life. 0414 498 027 Meanwhile, on its website, the Foundation invites visitors to look at the memories of Michael Hughes, who would no doubt be proud of his legacy. Bright sparks in home building and supplies

S

PARK Homes is a business that started with a spark of creativity and passion and is now on fire fanned by innovation. The home building and materials market is an industry that is known for its lack of flexibility and responsiveness, where traditionally customers have had to accept a ‘one size fits all’ service, Spark chairperson Elaine Roach said. “But that ethic is being challenged by Spark Homes and our philosophy of unlimited customisation,” Elaine said. “We simply believe that Australians should be able to have the home they want. Exactly what they want. And they should be able to have it in an affordable, energy-efficient, sustainable way.” Spark make building materials, products and entire home packages that do just that. “Customisation is the new competitive frontier in home building and we are leading the charge,” Elaine said. “Our success is directly related to our clients achieving superior results, and they do that because of the research, design and engineering innovation we are able to bring to product and home designs.” The talented designers and engineers in Spark’s research and development team are constantly at the forefront of new technology and new techniques. “They are constantly adapting developments to products that we know will work in the real world, products we know will achieve cost and performance advantages, like seven to 10 star energy ratings across our products, and so we allow our clients to directly reap the benefits of innovation and design breakthroughs,” Elaine said. “At Spark Homes we regard innovation as

wider industry as she has brought a steady stream of new, creative, highly efficient products to the Australian market. Elaine learned the art and science of business during her early working life living in the Gulf where she was immersed in leading edge mobile phone technology, electronics, distribution and media by the same brand SPARK. When she came to Australia in 2012 she bought with her a proven understanding of how customer focused technological innovation can transform entire industries. “Poor personal experience of the Australian building industry’s lengthy delays and old fashioned practices inspired me to develop plans to challenge the home building industry by introducing new designs for entire homes and key building materials,” Elaine said. The innovations that Elaine has driven has resulted in new designs that have dramatically reduced costs and the time required by construction schedules, while at the same time improving the energy efficiency and environmental characteristics of core materials used in construction. ENTWORTH Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, has developed a free online calculator to help navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). More than 460,000 people are expected to receive a disability support package from the NDIS by 2020 and, with literally hundreds of different options and combinations of support available, the process can be complicated. Launched in October last year, www.SupportCalculator.com.au was the first tool of its kind to help simplify the process of developing a funding package. The tool calculates the cost of a variety of support services across 15 different categories and generates a printable report that can be used in discussions with an NDIS planner. It can be used by current and potential NDIS participants, carers, health and community service professionals Australia-wide. Wentworth Healthcare is a notfor-profit organisation that works to improve health for the community across the four local government areas of Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith.

Welcome Bringing harmony to business families  CAROLYN COLE S wealth creators and their family members pursue growth and financial stability from generation to generation, business families often find interfamily tensions flaring into conflict that can last decades. In most cases this undesired tension comes at a negative cost to the business itself and has a risk of destabilizing the financial ecosystem those same family members rely upon. However, careful planning, clear communication, and a commitment to cooperation around a shared purpose may help mitigate the risk of conflict. This is a conscious journey for a family which involves work, however the result from this process is priceless to most families.

A

Business family conflicts are typically attributed to communication issues Conflicts typically stems from some level of communication breakdown within a family. One of the greatest challenges for family members is to understand what each person is entitled to know and what sits outside of their authorized scope. This can be confusing for a variety of reasons. Firstly a family member is not necessarily an owner, and even if he or she is a shareholder, that does not automatically mean they are privy to day-to-day operating decisions within a business. Secondly, there are often expectations of employees and community members, that because a person is a family member, he or she will have access to information or can influence decisions at the business leadership level. This can be far from the truth. Additionally, conflict may arise when a family member who is an employee of a company has information in advance of other non-employee family member shareholders. The question of, “why wasn’t I told about that?” can create the impression that there are insiders and outsiders in the communication channels. It can also be very embarrassing for family members to learn about business decisions from media releases or company employees.

In a business family context, effective governance means clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the family members involved in the business, to create an inclusive environment and ensure each generation and each individual understands their “lane” and why they’re in it. A proper governance structure makes it clear who in the family makes a particular decision, as well as how, when, and why they do so—and who needs to know about it. It should also establish a mechanism for resolving disputes and provide a roadmap for family members who wish to exit the business, should they wish to. No one like the feeling of being in a locked room. Just knowing there is an exit option, provides all family members the opportunity for different decision making processes.

The path to harmony begins with creating a process

Establishing—or improving—a family office can support better governance

One of the most effective ways a business family can reduce the likelihood of conflict and create harmony throughout the family ecosystem is by introducing a structure and process around communication and decision making. Many people refer to this as “governance”.

A “family office” is a group of professionals (accountants, lawyers, wealth managers and more) who come together to integrate information about the business family and develop clear processes around communication and decision making. A family office can be invaluable in helping business families improve

organizational governance and build greater harmony through the family itself. To establish a family office or evaluate an existing one, take stock of the professionals already advising the family. This should include not only those advising family members in charge of running day-to-day operations, but those supporting other family members who have a direct or indirect interest in the family business. How well do these myriad professionals work together? Are they communicating effectively? If not, that could be a key factor contributing to any family discord, as the recommendations single family members receive, may not be taking the entire business—or family—into account. An effective family office must comprise professionals willing to embrace teamwork and prioritize the business families’ interests over their own. All too often, business families find their professional advisors competing for a greater share of the family “pie”; this ongoing competition can inhibit teamwork and lead to conflict down the road. The same is true for professionals working for the family’s business(es) rather than the family itself—a lack of communication between these advisors and those of the family office can make it difficult for family members to know what

they need to know, when they need to know it, in order to make the timely and effective decisions. To alleviate conflict and foster harmony, business families should invest in experienced professional advisors that are willing to work together and who bring an unbiased, impartial perspective to the matters of the day. They need advisors who can clearly articulate the impact of a decision on the business—and on the family members themselves—coordinating efforts in order to continually move the family business, and the family’s own plans, forward. Anything less is simply unacceptable.

Avoid business family conflict with better governance and communication Conflict may be an all too common feature of business families, but it doesn’t have to be. An effective governance structure, supported by a well-functioning family office, can provide the clear communication needed to mitigate the risk of family conflict and build a greater sense of harmony across both the family and the business. Cyber criminals are on the move – here's how to keep your family safe  GORDON ARCHIBALD ORE and more families are living on the web. Its helping them stay connected as they work, shop, bank and access health information from multiple family devices at home and on the move. …But cyber criminals are also on the move. Since July the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has received more than 13,500 reports of cybercrime with identity theft and online fraud the most common. Cyber criminals most commonly target Australian families through phishing attacks: where criminals try and trick people into clicking links in messages claiming to be from their bank or by asking them to fill out online banking forms. They also use email, to gain access to your devices to install malware and look for known vulnerabilities in software or operating systems. Families can take seven proactive steps to better protect themselves and their data:

M

1. Education: Out of all the layers of cyber protection, humans are the most vulnerable. People, particularly children, are inherently trustworthy. Cyber criminals know this and exploit our innate decency – so educate your children about what suspicious activity looks like. Just as you would with a family fire escape plan consider developing family rules about

what to share and who is ok to talk to online. Understand a bank or government department would never email requesting personal details. Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with new ways to gain your trust and your data so check the Australian Cyber Security Centre for known threats.

2. Patching: PATCH, PATCH, PATCH and patch again. Businesses with good cybersecurity practices constantly update their operating systems and applications. You should too. Turn on auto updates on all devices including laptops, mobiles and smart devices. In 2017 a global Ransomware attack crippled hospital systems around the world. The cause? A remote code execution vulnerability that only existed on outdated Windows operating systems. Make sure you have antivirus software installed and keep it up to date too.

3.Passwords: Passwords are an important line of defence against cybercrime – but most are easily guessed. It’s easy for someone to collect information you reveal about yourself online and use it to crack your passwords. Therefore, it is important that you avoid the use of your family members’ names, date of birth or any other easy-to-guess personal details. You should avoid using the same passwords across multiple devices. Lastly, you should use two factor authentication for online banking activities.

4.Social Media: Social media is an easy place for cybercriminals to mine personal data so you need to be discerning with the information you share. The settings of all major social media networks have privacy options so approved followers can view your profile. Think about the information you share online like birthdays, age, address, or school. Use a nickname or an alternative profile pic to help protect your identity when online gaming or on social media.

5. Public Wi-Fi: Information shared on a public Wi-Fi network can be intercepted by cybercriminals. Use public Wi-Fi networks wisely and with caution – make sure your anti-virus software and patching are up to date and avoid sending or receiving sensitive information. If you must make a sensitive transaction or send sensitive data you should only use secure websites that have: https:// instead of http:// and the lock symbol at the start of the address.

6. Privacy: Always read policies for websites and applications on how they use your information. If you’re not comfortable with the information they request then consider if you really want to sign up. The less personal information your family shares online, the better.

7. Backup: If you are compromised it is important you are able to recover family photos, videos,

personal and financial information. Your data can be intentionally stolen but it can also be unintentionally compromised through a hardware failure or accidental deletion. It is important you backup your data and enable automatic back-ups of your data to a cloud provider or to an external drive. These key steps and activities will minimise the risk of being compromised. In the event of an incident take the following steps: • Immediately notify your bank/financial institutions of the incident • Notify your family and friends so they are aware • Immediately change your passwords on all devices even if they are different • Inform the ACSC & police • Notify the relevant websites involved in the incident • Have a cyber-specialist rebuild your device/devices • Request a credit report from a reputable credit reference bureau So you think you’ve heard this all before – well maybe you have but if you are still using 123456 as your password then you could be one of the 23.2 million hacked accounts worldwide that share your password. Think again – your online identity will thank you. Article first published by Gordon Archibald, Partner, National Lead, Cyber Security Services, KPMG Australia on KPMG Newsroom.

PropTech: real estate with some extra tech  CRAIG MENNIE  CHRISTOPHER OMEISSAH EAL estate, a constant topic of conversation at dinner parties but the talk is more focused on price rather than real estate technology. So let’s pause, reflect and learn something new about real estate: Property Technology or ‘PropTech’. The global PropTech industry is predicted to be worth over US$20 billion by 2020 and our 2018 Global Proptech survey revealed 93 percent of industry respondents felt traditional real estate companies can no longer avoid becoming engaged in the PropTech landscape. But what exactly is it? PropTech is broadly described as a new wave of services operating at the intersection of real estate and technology. This essentially encompasses two main areas: First is the foundation layer; the part of the construction process that is typically low-tech and centred on trades. Think hi-vis and hard hats. For example, embedded sensors on a connected worksite can collect and manage information relating to safety, construction delivery and building performance. Domestic firms are making waves in this area. Australian company Ynomia developed in collaboration with CSIRO utilises proprietary BLEAT (Bluetooth Low Energy Awareness Tracking) sensors, for resource and supply chain tracking. This technology provides real time, automated, location-based insights on three key ingredients dictating project success: labour, machinery and materials. Tracking these in real time makes the construction process more efficient and in the long run lowers occupancy costs and increases yields. The second layer is the real estate and hospitality layer. This is where new technologies increase operational efficiencies and heighten customer experience, which in turn maximises returns on the underlying investment. Australian companies have already developed

R

50

client communication apps for landlords, which facilitate a demand-based and efficient provision of services for their tenants across commercial and residential properties. Other domestic firms continue to innovate building energy management systems (BEMS) which traditionally only regulated energy usage but are now essentially IoT ecosystems, allowing for the control and partial automation of many aspects of building maintenance. With increasing interoperability of systems manufactured by different companies, buildings can communicate through

technology, sharing data – and their conversations will amount to a more efficient provision of services. PropTech has the potential to power growth in the real estate and construction sectors but its adoption is slow. It boils down to the idiosyncratic, relatively low-tech and complex nature of the real estate and construction value chain. However the emergence of new leaders with high brand recognition such as Airbnb or Regus and the fact new technology is producing positive results means recognition of the sector is growing.

Companies are now starting to display a real willingness to learn and collaborate by working directly with researchers and founders to develop strategies capitalising on emerging technologies, pioneer value and ultimately lead to adoption. Article first published by Craig Mennie, National Sector Leader, Real Estate & Private Equity and National Leader, Transaction Services; and Christopher Omeissah, Proptech Sector Lead, KPMG Australia on KPMG Newsroom.

Power of social media marketing  LOUIE RAMOS HE power of social media is influence. Does your business’s social media marketing strategy have what it takes to reach the millions of customers worldwide? Social media has the ability to provide your business with ample opportunities to engage and influence customers and, with the right content, you could be serving up the right incentive that will help a customer make a decision about your message. Marketing strategies are no longer the domain of big corporates throwing money at ‘stab-in-the-dark’ campaigns based on outdated, irrelevant information. Social media has given the power and control to consumers who have their social ears to the ground looking for new and exciting information; creating fleeting trends and finding unique and quirky services and products from the furthest corners of the world. This is your business’s opportunity to take advantage of this forum by getting social and spreading your business’s brand through engagement, enticing news and fantastical tid-bits. Your business can reap numerous benefits from a thoughtfully planned out social media marketing campaign

T

based on real-time information and current social-trending sentiment. These benefits could include: • Increased brand-awareness: use visual content in your social media engagements. engagements that make your customers happy; • Cost-effective: marketing through social media is a cost-effective way of connecting with your customers and bringing your services and products to market. Germany’s Romantic Road a special drive  LEN RUTLEDGE EXPLORES THE HIGHLIGHTS AGNIFICANT medieval architecture, the dramatic Alps, pretty green rolling countryside, castles and some of the most picturesque villages in Europe combine to make Germany’s Romantic Road a very special drive. We began in Füssen in the south with its large former monastery and castle and finished in Würzburg 350 kilometres to the north. While this drive could have taken four hours, in fact we took three days and felt rushed in the process. These were some of the highlights.

M

Schwangau This small village is home to one of Germany’s most iconic sights, Schloss Neuschwanstein, the fairy tale castle that inspired Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a personal retreat, the castle has enough towers, turrets, balconies, pinnacles and sculptures to satisfy anyone. You can visit the castle with a timed ticket but you will share the trip with hundreds of others during busy times. I suggest the best view is from Marienbrücke, the suspension bridge behind the castle where you can see the dreamy castle in all its glory. If you have the time, also tour the lessvisited Hohenschwangau, the neighbouring castle where King Ludwig II grew up and dreamed about his magical castle.

almost perfectly round walled old town is built inside a massive crater. Because it sees fewer tourists than Rothenburg or Dinkelsbühl, the other two walled towns, it can be enjoyed more quietly.

Dinkelsbühl Dinkelsbühl was not bombed in the Second World War, so it stands as it was in the Middle Ages, when it was created. St. George’s Minster, a late 15th-century Gothic masterpiece, dominates the town while magnificent gabled buildings, dating from around 1600, line the central Weinmarkt. Many are now restaurants and cafés. The square hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year. I strongly suggest a walk on the town walls with their 18 towers and four gates. The views are nice but the thought of walking where many armed defenders have been over hundreds of years makes it something special.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber This is a very popular tourist destination overlooking the Tauber River, so it can get quite crowded. You have a real sense of stepping back into Renaissance era Germany and most visitors love it. The narrow cobblestone streets feel like they haven’t changed in hundreds of years.

Würzburg.

Rothenburg.

Late afternoon is the best time after the tourist buses have left and the shops are closing, leaving only the restaurants open. It’s a calm atmosphere allowing you to really take in the town. Rothenburg’s well-preserved town walls which completely encircle the old town are great for walking along. It is free and it was one of the highlights for us. Parking is almost impossible inside the walls so we chose a hotel close by with its own car park and we left our car there the whole time. Walking along cobbled streets, you’ll notice that each building here is special. There are various popular photo points but we equally enjoyed walking the back streets and making our own discoveries.

You see this today in the Wurzburger Residenz a baroque palace now inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list and once the seat of the reigning prince-bishop; the rococo-style church Käppele; and Festung Marienberg, a medieval fortress high above the city.

Built around the Main River and surrounded by rolling hills, the city of Würzburg has impressive architecture and a nice vibe. In 686, three Irish missionaries made a vain attempt to convert the town ruler to Christianity. Later, Würzburg had a bishop appointed and became a duchy as well, and the ruling prince-bishops brought their wealth

The voice of a new generation HIS November, Riverside Theatres will present the captivating theatrical work, To be Honest, created in collaboration with young people from Sydney’s Western suburbs. Crafted from a series of interviews with young residents from the Canterbury and Bankstown area who have all experienced homelessness, To Be Honest is a collection of unique, true stories. Stories of cultural displacement, racism, domestic violence and cycles of crime but ultimately stories of hope that tomorrow can be a better day. To Be Honest is an incredible piece of verbatim theatre from celebrated playwright and director, Stefo Nantsou (Hilary Bell’s Take Two: A Comedy of Errors, Resident Director at Sydney Theatre Company 2009-2013) that shines a light on growing up in Western Sydney. Stefo and Outloud (formerly BYDS) have been creating community-focussed performance works like To Be Honest for over 15 years. A homeless young woman stinks of Maccas fries as she tries to sleep in her car in the middle of the day. A boy gets sold by his mother for five thousand dollars. A man on bail tries to get his life back on track. A sister and her brother fight to keep each other in their lives. Together with heartfelt storytelling, To Be Honest also features astounding original rap and melodic songs performed with a live band. This is a show jam-packed with spirit, warmth and culture told with a distinctly Western Sydney flavour.

Parramatta celebrates its long history ISTORY buffs, residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Parramatta's rich cultural heritage at the City of Parramatta's Foundation Festival, from October 31 until November 3. An extension of previous Foundation Day events, the inaugural Foundation Festival will take place over three days and across 10 historically significant locations in the Parramatta area. "Foundation Festival is a great opportunity for both locals and visitors to learn about and celebrate Parramatta's rich heritage," City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said. "Parramatta has many incredible stories to tell. This festival highlights a small selection of these unique tales, enabling the current generations to get an eye-opening glimpse into the past. Kicking off on Halloween night (Thursday, October 31), the first event on the festival program is a Halloween Ghost Tour at Old Government House, Parramatta Park. Participants will explore the 214- yearold Georgian mansion by candlelight and hear about ghostly encounters experienced there. On Friday, November 1, visitors can learn from a traditional custodian about the Darug people's connection to the land by taking the Warami Mittigar Aboriginal Twilight Cultural Walk. They can also examine the story behind renowned historical figure John Macarthur through a theatrical re-enactment at Hambledon Cottage. There are different events being held on Saturday, November 2, in-

Here’s what you need to know about homework and how to help your child ď Ž ELLEN AMATEA ANY parents and educators view homework as an important indicator of classroom rigor. The Back-to-Basic movement, which emphasizes the need for schools to teach basic academic skills in particular, has increased the emphasis on homework as a measure of a school’s success. In fact, many parents and students judge the difficulty of a course or teacher by the amount of homework assigned. Furthermore, many educators believe that asking parents to help their children with homework is a particularly effective strategy for enhancing children’s achievement. Many parents, too, agree that their involvement will make a positive difference. In a 2014 study conducted by the US Department of Education, 90% of parents reported that they set aside a place at home for their child to do homework, and 85% reported that they checked to see that homework had been completed. But does helping with homework really improve student achievement? As a high school and college teacher who has assigned homework, and a mother of two sons who were not always too enthusiastic about completing homework, I have studied the many ways that families from different income levels support their children’s academic success. I have come to believe that homework can not only enhance children’s achievement but can be a powerful opportunity for parent-child

M

nurturing. But research also tells us that it is not just any homework assignment that will have that kind of impact. Here is what we are learning about homework.

When parent involvement helps Despite a widespread belief that parent involvement in homework is good for kids, researchers are discovering that it can have both positive and negative effects. In 2008, three researchers – Erika A Patall, Harris Cooper and Jorgianne Civey Robinson – conducted an extensive review of research on the effects on students of parent involvement in homework. They found that the effects of parent involvement appear to be strongly influenced by four factors: • the nature of the homework assignment. • the particular involvement strategy used by the parent. • the child’s age and ability level. • the time and skill resources in the home. The researchers found that homework assignments in which students are expected to memorize facts, and the parent is expected to teach school skills, provide less meaningful opportunities for parent and student interaction in the learning process. In contrast, homework assignments in which students choose a project that requires in-depth investigation, thought and some creative license enable meaningful parent participation. Parents can play supportive roles in discussing the project with their child,

which is more enjoyable both for the child and parent. For example, students may demonstrate math skills; share ideas and obtain reactions to

apply school skills to real life; or work with parents or other family partners in new ways.

Strategies for parents In addition, how parents help their child with homework appears to have distinct effects on student achievement. Most parents engage in a wide variety of involvement strategies, such as creating “school-like routines” in which they make rules about when, where or how homework is done. They also interact with the teacher about homework and provide general oversight or monitoring of homework completion. In some instances, parents control these structures; in others, parents follow the student’s lead. For instance, parents may engage in the learning processes with the child (eg, engage in homework tasks with the child or in processes that support the child’s understanding of homework). Parents may also help their child learn self-management skills (eg, coping with distractions). The strategies that parents use may vary depending on their beliefs about child-rearing and broader cultural values. Yet these different parent involvement strategies appear to have distinct effects on student achievement. Strategies that support a child’s autonomy and also provide structure in the form of clear and consistent guidelines appear to be the most beneficial. For example, in a 2001 study, researchers reported that parent homework involvement that supported autonomy was associated with higher standardized test scores, class grades and homework completion. In contrast, direct aid (doing the homework for the student) was associated with lower test scores and class grades. In another study, parent involvement in homework was reported by students to have a detrimental effect if the parent tried to help without a request from the child or was perceived as intrusive or controlling by the child.

Age matters Researchers have also noted that the age and ability level of a child strongly influenced the amount of help with homework that parents provided and its subsequent benefits to the child. Parents reported spending more time helping their elementary-age children with

www.wsba.com.au children were younger. This, in part, is because they were not expected or asked to do so by secondary teachers. As a result, low-ability students in middle and high school were less likely to complete homework or to achieve academically. Another factor was that parents of older students often reported feeling increasingly less able to help with homework.

What can educators do? These research findings have important implications for how teachers design homework assignments and how parents and teachers might participate in the homework process. First, students (and parents) need to know why they should be doing a particular homework assignment. What skill is to be practiced/reinforced? Why does this skill matter? Teachers need to explicitly communicate the purpose of a particular homework assignment and emphasize how the skills they are learning in a homework assignment can be applied in the real world. Second, educators should design homework assignments that are more meaningful and allow for creativity. Students should be able to have a choice in how they carry out an assignment. Third, students have different learning styles, and educators need to consider how they might need to express their learning differently (via audiotapes, videotapes, posters and oral presentations rather than the standard written report). Fourth, teachers should design interactive homework assignments that involve students in interactions with peers and with family and community members. For example, authors Alma Flor Ada and F Isabel Campoy have developed an approach of creating family storybooks that are used as reading and writing texts in the classroom. Another group of researchers designed “interactive” homework assignments that guided students on how to conduct conversations with family members in math, science and language arts. Another team of educators worked with teachers and parents to develop curricular approaches that brought students’ cultural backgrounds and families’ “funds of knowledge” into the classroom. For example, class lessons and homework were based on how parents use math in cooking or sewing or how workers use reading and math to build a house.

homework than their secondary school-age children. Parents of low-ability students reported spending more time helping with homework than did parents of high-ability students. While teachers and parents of elementary-aged children were more likely to work together to help students complete their assignments, parents of secondary school students often did not monitor their adolescents’ homework as faithfully as when their

Homework is a daily activity for most students that takes time, energy and emotion, not only for students but for their families as well. Given these investments, it is important that homework be a more beneficial learning experience, in which parents too can bring their interesting and enriching skills.
