Let the Fun Begin...

PUMPKINS, ELVES, AND SANTA, OH MY! The fall and early winter are full of holiday programs for all ages.

As the year winds down, the fun is only getting started! A variety of holiday events and programs are planned for goblins and elves of all ages.

Celebrate the beginning of fall by stepping back in time at the Harvest Festival at Lyndon House Arts Center. This annual event is a celebration of old time crafts and rural life which offers participants of all ages an opportunity to learn about some of Georgia’s history first hand. Read more about the Harvest Festival on page 3.

Continue into October with a variety of Halloween events including the Children’s Halloween Party at East Athens Community Center, Halloween Carnival at Memorial Park, and Scary, Oozy, Slimy Day at Sandy Creek Nature Center. New Halloween programs this year include Best Dressed Costume and Lil Punkins Pumpkin Paint both at Rocksprings Park.

Everyone will be as busy as one of Santa’s elves with the selection of holiday events. The holiday season kicks off with the annual Downtown Parade of Lights. Be part of this year’s parade! Floats, marching bands, and more will fill the streets of downtown Athens. The evening culminates with Santa and Mrs. Claus lighting the Christmas tree in front of City Hall.

The parade is just the start. December is full of holiday programs.

Enjoy Breakfast with Santa, Breakfast with the Grinch, Christmas Elf House Build, and even an Elf Camp. See page 16 for a list of holiday events.

The Morton Theatre is a recipient of a 2012 Historic Preservation Award for Rehabilitation presented by the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation.

The award was in recognition of the recent rehabilitation of the 102-year old theatre. For the past year, the locally designated historic landmark underwent significant work including ceiling and wall repair, painting, restoration of windows, and wood floor restoration.

The extensive work was funded through grants from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, Athens-Clarke County Human and Economic Development, and the Fox Theatre Institute.

The Skate Park of Athens The Skate Park of Athens at Southeast Clarke Park opened in 2005. The Skate Park was funded by SPLOST 2000, private fundraising, and a $10,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation It is 14,000 square feet in size, and is built to accomodate both skateboards and BMX bikes.

The park features two main components including a bowl five to 10 feet in depth and approximately 4,500 square feet in size. The second component is a street course including ramps, grinding edges, rails, steps, and other unique features. This Skate Park is constructed entirely of either poured-in-place concrete or shotcrete and has a unique steel coping around the edges for grinding.

It’s a Dog’s Life...

Bring man’s best friend to one of the ACC Leisure Services Department’s dog parks. These off-leash areas are popular with both canines and their human owners Dog parks are located at Memorial Park and Southeast Clarke Park. These locations are free of charge.

Sandy Creek Park boasts a total of four dog parks, three of which are reservation only with a $1 per dog/per hour dog fee. Upon reservation, each dog owner is given a key to their private park when they arrive at the front gate house. The fourth park is free with no reservation requirement or key needed. Each park is two to three acres.

Registration Fees:

Fees are due at the time of registration. Checks should be made payable to “Athens-Clarke County.”

Refund Policy:

• If a class or program is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or other reason, ACC Leisure Services will issue a full refund to all registered individuals.

• No refunds will be granted after the start of the program or class. Collected fees of less than $5 will not be refunded (unless the department cancels the program or class).

• Refund requests must be received no less than seven (7) business days prior to the first day of class or program.

• Refunds will be assessed a 25% administrative fee.

• After the seven (7) day deadline, refunds will not be granted without a written medical excuse from a licensed physician.

Scholarships

Any Athens-Clarke County resident under the age of 18 is eligible to apply for a scholarship. The Bishop Park Tennis Program offers a limited number of scholarships. A list of required documents to determine scholarship eligibility are available at www. athensclarkecounty.com/scholarships or by calling 706-613-3800.

Scholarships do not cover entrance, admission, rental fees, or adult programs.

Parents must apply for a scholarship prior to the day of program registration.

All scholarships expire June 30 and must be renewed.

Smoking Policy

Sec.4-3-2. Smoking Prohibited in Athens-Clarke County Facilities. Smoking shall be prohibited in all enclosed facilities of, including buildings owned, leased, operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. Smoking shall be prohibited within the boundaries of any park, youth sports complex, or recreation area owned, leased, or operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, including any open area within such park, youth sports complex, or recreation area.
