A few minutes with Rose West, facility director of Trails & Open Space What is trails & open space?

Our small team oversees the operation and management of 2000+ acres of natural areas plus 43+ miles of trail, including the Firefly and Greenway. We are a small staff, so it is paramount that we utilize volunteers and citizens to help maintain and improve our natural park environment. Without regular upkeep, trails can become very rutted, muddy, and unpassable.

What is difference between Trail Improvement and Habitat Restoration?

On Trail Improvement Workdays, we work with volunteers to ensure that we keep our trails accessible so everyone has a way to connect with nature and reap the benefits of outdoor recreation. Habitat restoration efforts focus more on the areas on either side of a trail, including river banks, forests, and wildlife habitats to combat the spread of invasive plants, which disrupt our natural ecosystems by inhibiting native plant growth and even harming our wildlife. If you are interested in joining us in improving our local ecosystems and trail network, please come join us for a workday- we’d love to have you!
