Simulation Mannequins Think about trading in your old VHS and going straight to a high-definition flat-screen. That’s what our nursing and comprehensive health care aide students are getting with new patient simulation mannequins. Thanks to generous donors, these mannequins will transform our nursing education and training, allowing our students to increase their practical and critical thinking skills on the wards. The foundation has a campaign goal to raise $240,000 towards the $500,000 project which will provide four simulation mannequins for the health care programs at ACC’s Brandon and Winnipeg campuses. We expect to unveil our new simulation mannequins in 2016. They’ll help us continue to provide authentic learning in a safe, controlled environment.
Thanks to a generous donation of $55,000, the Brandon Area Community Foundation has purchased one high fidelity mannequin for ACC. 2
Practical Nursing Class of ‘16 donated $ 3,730 from the “Nurses need a MANNequin” Social.
Sustainable Greenhouse One of the key goals for our Sustainable Greenhouse is to see how low-cost facilities can be used to help grow fresh fruit and vegetables without intensive energy costs.
AND IT’S WORKING! We’ve started research projects on leafy greens, onions, carrots and tomatoes under different greenhouse microclimates for two years while tracking heat energy — and we’ve added even more temperature sensors for this year.
Soon, we’ll have preliminary data around heating efficiency and crop production; and then we’ll move into a cost analysis to see what kind of savings might exist. Students are involved all through the academic year, collecting data and growing crops.

Applied Research in our Grow Plot • Exploring which variety of sweet potato is the best to grow and harvest in Manitoba and on the prairies. ACC instructor and researcher Dr. Sajjad Rao has narrowed it down to the final seven. One of them could be a whole new crop for Manitoba! • Collecting data to see how bean planting dates can affect crop yield. We’re finishing year two of this project. • Studying whether hand weeding or mulch is a better method of controlling weeds and affecting the harvest of sweet peppers. • Testing early-maturing tomato varieties for Manitoba’s climate.
Instructor & Researcher: Dr. Sajjad Rao
And if that all wasn’t enough, we continue to use our Sustainable Greenhouse to grow food for campus events like our Grey Owl restaurant, Harvest on the Hill, and International Wine & Food Festival.
Growing weeds? You bet! Our newest addition is a weed garden, thanks to a $57,000 gift from the Manitoba Zero Tillage Research Association. Construction was completed last fall and planting will begin in the spring of 2016. This outdoor classroom will help students, farm retailers, researchers and the public learn to examine and identify weed specimens throughout the growing season. 4
Lynaya McKay was one of many Culinary Arts students who was busy picking beans on the North Hill Campus during this past September harvest. Crops grown on campus make their way to MICA where they’re used in delicious dishes at community events.

A Vision for our North Hill Campus Imagine the future ACC North Hill Campus: bustling and full of activity. It’s a vibrant, green, inclusive and inviting place — one that provides exceptional learning experiences and welcomes the community as a year-round destination. Over the last decade, we’ve moved more than a third of our post-secondary students in Brandon to our historic, picturesque North Hill Campus, and we’ve recently unveiled a campus master plan to guide us for the next 50 years so we can be sure that the decisions we make today are the right ones for tomorrow. Our next step for continued growth and relocation to the campus is a proposed Centre for Health, Energy and Environment. The project will redevelop the iconic 103-year-old Parkland Building, which will be home to a new Centre for Health, Energy and Environment, serving as a hub for learning and research innovation. In January 2016, the Province of Manitoba announced their support for the project and will provide up to two-thirds of the total cost of the project, which is estimated to
be $94.1 million. The province will also provide an additional $4 million toward environmental remediation work on the project. When the project is complete, 70 per cent of our Brandon post-secondary students will be at our North Hill Campus. The project will also allow us to add new programs that have high labour demand and long wait lists for students. Learn more about our vision for the North Hill Campus at assiniboine.net/NHcampus. 7
OTHER NOTABLE EVENTS
Turnbull Planned Gift In late 2014, the ACC Foundation received a substantial gift from Mel and Ruth Turnbull, part of a bequest of more than a half million dollars. Their generous gift was equally split between the college and Brandon University, and will help us present two full-time students with bursaries of up to $5,000 each year.
Preference will be given to those who have graduated from Hartney School and will be selected based on financial need. For information on how you can plan to leave a lasting legacy, please contact our Foundation office at 204.725.8739 or foundation@assiniboine.net

Legacy Gala Dinner An eight-course luxury meal presented by ACC students will go a long way towards helping future college classes. Approximately $30,000 was raised at the 2015 ACC Foundation Legacy Gala dinner, which has been one of the college’s biggest annual fundraising events for the past two decades. Money from the dinner, held last spring, will go towards merit scholarships and financial aid bursaries to help future students.
At the dinner, students of the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts showcased their artistic flair in the dishes they presented throughout an eight-course meal while Hotel & Restaurant Management students displayed first-class service tending to diners’ needs at the table. The 2014 dinner raised $27,500 for scholarships, awards and bursaries while the 2013 event provided $23,000 in support of ACC’s sustainable greenhouse.
Dinner proceeds help send students to compete at Taste Canada Cooks the Books, and vie for title as Canada’s Best New Student Chefs. [L to R:] Chef Joanne Canada-Somers; Tammy Johannson; students Tanner Holland and Harris Robertson; and Bernie Whetter.

Carpentry Students Benefit
From Annual Co-Op Partnership ACC has partnered with the Dauphin Consumers Co-op for the past seven years to have Carpentry & Woodworking students and faculty at ACC’s Parkland Campus build ready-to-move homes for sale in the community. Each year, the home is sold for $5,000 above the cost of materials. Those extra funds are given back to students in the form of cash awards through the ACC Foundation.
10
A $2,000 award is given to the student(s) with the highest overall achievement at the end of the first term (December). The remaining $3,000 is split equally amongst all students that achieve a 70 per cent average throughout their studies.
Gold! Silver! Bronze!
ACC students rounded out a medal count at the 2015 Skills Canada competition held in Saskatoon last May. Three of the five students who represented the college won medals in their competitions. Jordan Neufeld took top spot in the IT Network Systems Administration competition. He was a student in ACC’s Computer Systems Technology program. Stephanie Kelbert won silver in the IT-Office
Software Applications competition and Melanie Moulder won bronze in the Website Development competition. Since 2005, team ACC has brought home three gold, nine silver and ten bronze medals. Skills Canada is a national competition that brings together more than 550 students and apprentices every year to compete in more than 40 trade and technology competitions.
Jordan Neufeld (centre), a second-year Computer Systems Technology student, took home a gold medal at Skills Canada. 11

BROOKE HUCULAK
Hometown: Forrest, MB Program: Police Studies Varsity Sport: Women’s Volleyball
Brooke is a 21-year-old captain of the women’s volleyball squad. A leader on and off the court, Brooke played university volleyball at Brandon University before being accepted to ACC’s Police Studies program. “Receiving an athletic scholarship was the difference between going to school and not. I was so grateful to get the extra financial help... it really made the final decision as to whether I would attend ACC or not,” said Brooke. “I have worked hard to be where I am today athletically and it was a great recognition.” Brooke led the Cougars to a Western Canadian College Open Volleyball Championship in November 2015. After graduation, Brooke hopes to become a municipal police officer in a Manitoba community.

KATIE ZACHARIAS
Hometown: Winnipeg, MB Program: IMA (Interactive Media Arts) Varsity Sports: Women’s Soccer & Hockey
Katie is a two sport student athlete at ACC who has played for our women’s soccer and hockey teams each of the last two seasons. From Winnipeg, she is a second year student in the IMA (Interactive Media Arts) program. “When I came to ACC, I didn’t know anyone. By playing on the soccer and hockey teams, I made friends quickly and helped my transition of moving to a new place that much easier,” said Katie. “Receiving an athletic scholarship has helped me immensely. It has relieved the cost of student loans, so I am able to focus more time on my studies and playing on the varsity sports teams.” Katie played a large role in the Cougars Western (Canadian) Shield Senior B Hockey Championship in April 2015. She hopes to start her own video production company upon graduation. 13
Student Profile KEVIN NEPITABO
Hometown: Thompson, MB Program: Second Year, IMA (Interactive Media Arts)
Kevin Nepitabo loves to learn. After a few years working in Brandon in construction, retail and for Maple Leaf Foods, Kevin went back to school and graduated from ACC’s Adult Collegiate in 2012 and then, with the help of an ACC entrance scholarship, graduated from the Aboriginal Community Development program in 2014. For both of those graduation ceremonies he was proud to be chosen as the Valedictorian. So it’s no surprise his strong speaking skills led him to the Interactive Media Arts program which he will finish in 2016. At the urging of instructors and student advisors Kevin applied for as many scholarships bursaries as he could. “The bursaries helped me pay my tuition and meant I did not have to pick up as many hours at my night job, so I could then concentrate more on school work.” During his time at ACC, Kevin has volunteered at the Brandon Friendship Centre, tutoring and mentoring students from the Adult Collegiate in English and Math. “ACC is one of the best places I’ve had for learning experiences. Everything I’ve learned has stuck me… all positive memories. I’m so glad I came here and could never imagine myself anywhere else.” Upon graduation, Kevin plans to work in television production.

Historically, RBC’s cumulative donations to ACC is more than $ 200,000. Highlights include: • Donating a major gift of $100,000 to Campaign Assiniboine in 2007 to kick-off fundraising efforts for development of ACC’s North Hill Campus. • Helping initiate the Financial Services Specialization within the Business Administration program with a $50,000 donation, and annually supporting a $2,000 scholarship endowment for students enrolled in it. • Regularly sponsoring ACC Foundation’s Legacy Gala Dinner and speaker series, or supporting events like the Alumni Awards Dinner, and Varsity Athletics fundraising initiatives. RBC employees are engaged alumni at ACC, whether that’s year-round on a college board, program advisory committee, guest speaker in classes, or by volunteering and donating through their employee-driven Day of Service grants. Thanks RBC & RBC Foundation For your ongoing partnership and support of Assiniboine Community College and the ACC Foundation.
“We see ACC as an outstanding community partner in creating a skilled workforce with up-to-date industry training. They actively seek our input to ensure training is preparing students to be successful in today’s market. It’s a pleasure to support the college through the volunteer activities of our staff and through the RBC Foundation.” —Terry Burgess, Regional Vice President, Manitoba West Region

Past President’s Message Education is the principal investment in the life of a human being. It is during these formative years, particularly postsecondary, that life-long relationships are cultured, characters are shaped, and opportunities for careers are realized. Manitoba is fortunate to be home to excellent post-secondary education institutions. Assiniboine Community College offers practical learning experiences in a multitude of disciplines, each one tailored to give students the necessary skills to perform jobs and operate businesses right here in Manitoba or wherever their destination may be. It is the function of the Assiniboine Community College Foundation to support student learning experiences through fundraising activities focused on capital projects and student financial support. The Foundation provides an important link between the community and the college by garnering financial support to meet the goals of the college. The 2013-14 and 2014-15 years were successful years for the Foundation with sincere gratitude to our donors. • We completed the Greenhouse campaign. $479,000 was raised towards the $1.3 million project. The new facility is now an integral part of the new Horticultural Production and Sustainable Food Systems programs.
• The annual Foundation Gala Dinner raised $57,000 for scholarships, awards, and bursaries. Together with donations and earnings from endowments and trust accounts, approximately $335,000 was awarded to deserving students. • More than $200,000 has been raised towards the $240,000 target for simulated mannequins to be used for exceptional learning experiences in our healthcare programs. In summary, a total of $1.4 million was sourced by the foundation to enhance learning experiences at Assiniboine Community College. Without the contributions from our donors, none of these events would achieve the success they now enjoy. As we look ahead, ACC’s ongoing development of the North Hill Campus will present exciting challenges for us. The achievements of the Foundation are due to the generosity of our donors, volunteers, alumni and staff. Thank you for your commitment and support to the strength and growth of Assiniboine Community College. Sincerely, Bernie Whetter Past President of ACC Foundation 23
Message from ACC President These are exciting times for Assiniboine Community College. We are well positioned to assist in Manitoba’s continued growth. Our graduates continue to be successful. Within nine months of graduation, 96% have jobs — and 94% of them are right here in Manitoba. Overall, our annual economic impact is 613 million. But we must go further. And do more. This past January, the Manitoba Government announced their support towards the next piece of development at our North Hill Campus. The estimated $94 million Centre for Health, Energy & Environment (CHEE) project will redevelop the iconic 103-year-old Parkland building, serving as a hub for learning and research innovation. This is just one indication of the growth and progress we’re in for over the coming years. Your support is critical to our continued evolution. It allows us to transform the lives of our students and their families while doing our part to strengthen Manitoba. I look forward to all the things we will accomplish together over the next year and well into the future. Thank you for being champions of education in our community. Mark Frison President of Assiniboine Community College

Get involved We’re proud of our accomplishments this year at the ACC Foundation, but there’s no way that we could have done it without the support and goodwill we’ve received from hundreds of people. If you’re reading this, you’re already a part of all that we have done, and will do over the course of future years. We have some amazing plans. We’re soon to unveil brand-new patient simulation mannequins for students in our healthcare programs, which will transform their learning experiences. We’ll soon embark on a major fundraising campaign for Assiniboine Community College, including our North Hill Campus and the proposed Centre for Health, Energy and Environment — the next piece of our development and expansion of the North Hill Campus. You can help. Tell a friend about the plans we have and the great work that you’ve already helped us accomplish. Ask us about volunteer opportunities — perhaps on our board or committees! And let us know your ideas for the future of the college and the future of our Foundation. Together we can change the lives of students, their families and communities. 25
