Challenging, but rewarding, says one first-time teacher.

TEACHING STUDENTS MEANS INFLUENCING LIVES by Grant Hamilton

At ACC’s Centre of Continuing Studies, we’re always finding new instructors. Sometimes we have students who want to learn something and we’ll try to find someone to teach it. Other times, we know of someone who has interesting knowledge to share and we’ll help them find students to teach it to. Lately, there’s been a strong interest in photography classes from Brandon and area students. It seems people are hungry to learn just about anything about photography, and they’re always wanting to upgrade their skills. We figured that was at least partly because most people carry a camera with them a whole lot more often than they used to — they’re embedded in every smartphone — and because sharing photos on social media has become such a huge part of many peoples’ lives. So we thought a course concentrating on Smartphone Photography would be a perfect fit. It was! We brought Colin Corneau to teach the class, first in May and again on August 17. And it’s proven so popular that we’re running it again on Oct. 8. Colin’s not just a professional photographer with the Brandon Sun, he also loves the art of photography, and when he’s not toting his high-end Canons for work, he’s a fan of the unobtrusive form factor of a smartphone camera. There are advantages and disadvantages to a smartphone camera. It’s small, meaning you can easily take it with you wherever you go, but its lens is also small, meaning it may not be great at capturing low-light or fast-action shots. In his class, Colin addressed some ways to make the most of the smartphone camera’s abilities, while minimizing its shortcomings. But while he knows how to deal with the challenges of a smartphone camera, CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2015

dealing with the challenge of teaching a class was new. “I found it really hard!” he laughs. “It’s nothing inherent in teaching, but it was challenging to reverse-engineer (what I do) for someone new. Teaching forces you to stop and think about it.” Photography has become such second nature to him, he says it was as if he had been asked to teach a class in walking. But once he came up with a three-part structure to the three-hour class, he says everything came into place. “It was perfect,” he said. “It worked out well with the time frame we had, and it helps break it down into manageable chunks.” For the first hour, Colin said, he led students through some of the pros and cons of shooting with a smartphone, and he explored some of the different built-in tools or downloadable apps that can help take a photo to the next level In the second hour, he and the students took a mini-recess, wandering around the ACC Victoria Avenue East campus and putting some of the lessons learned into practice. Then, in the third and final hour, they returned to the classroom for a group sharing session of the images they’d photographed, with Colin available to offer tips on how to further improve the pictures. 10 CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2015

TAKE BETTER PHOTOS

WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE 1. Get closer — The zoom on your smartphone is just not very good. If you want to capture expressions and reaction, you need to physically get up close to your subject. 2.

Take more — You’re not spending any money on film or developing, so feel free to experiment and learn what works and what doesn’t. Try taking five, six or a dozen different angles. Snap multiple shots so you can ensure that everyone’s eyes are open.

Stay in the light — Although they’re always improving, most smartphones’ tiny lenses and sensors just can’t capture enough light for evening or night-time shots. You’ll have much better luck in daylight or a well-lit interior.

Don’t forget to edit — Photographers no longer have to spend hours in the darkroom, but you can still bring out the best of your photos with a little bit of work afterwards. Most camera apps come with a few basic filters; download new apps to uncover all kinds of other powerful settings.

Now put it down — It’s easy to develop tunnel vision and to get lost in your screen, so don’t forget to enjoy the moment as well. Put your phone away for a little while and look around. After all, that’s how you’ll spot the next great photo!

COLIN CORNEAU Colin is a staff photographer at the Brandon Sun, where he portrays the people and events of southwestern Manitoba on a daily basis. But his love of photography also spans candid street photography, mobile photography and old-school film photography. This fall, Colin will be teaching Street/ Candid Photography on Sept. 3 and Smartphone Photography on Oct. 8. Let Colin help you take your photo skills to the next level. Colin noted that breaking the class into thirds mirrors the famous photography “rule of thirds” for getting more visually interesting photos. One student, Lani, focused on flower closeups with her smartphone camera. She agreed to share her photo with us — we featured it to start the article. Colin says it’s got good colour and composition, and is “quite lovely and well done.” Not only did she make use of an addon lens adapter, Colin says, “she used the rule of thirds to make for a more dynamic composition and lead your eye through the frame on a ‘path.’” She also got right up close to her subject — easier, perhaps, with a flower than a person — because smartphone cameras don’t have a real zoom. All told, Colin says, it’s student success like this that make becoming an instructor such a rewarding choice. “I would recommend it for a couple of reasons,” he says. “The first is that it helps you focus on what you know. You can deepen and reinforce your own knowledge. “The second is that it’s good to give back … you never know, you may spark someone’s new hobby, new career. They obviously care enough to take the course. It’s really cool to think about that, you could spark a catalyst in someone else’s life.”

Colin’s going to keep sharing his skills. He taught other courses over the summer, including one on Street/ Candid Photography, a particular passion of his. In fact, we’re running that one again, too, on Sept. 3. It’s more than just a photo course — it includes an excursion to the downtown Cruise Night, where there’s so much going on that everyone will be sure to find plenty of interesting photo subjects. The majority of the work in this trade is outdoors. It is important that people entering the trade have strong mechanical aptitude, communication skills, mathematical ability, excellent visual and depth perception and a high degree of hand-foot-eye coordination. The operation of some heavy equipment is physically demanding as is the handling of accessories associated with the worksite operations. Heavy equipment operators are wellcompensated and in-demand — both in Manitoba and throughout Canada. You’ll graduate with a Certificate of Achievement from ACC, recognized by employers. The $140,000 new simulators are loaded on top-of-the-line Alienware laptops, kitted out with huge external monitors and specially designed replica controls that perfectly mimic the machines you’ll train on. We sat Brandon–Souris MP Larry Maguire down for a hands-on demonstration earlier this year. Not only did he take to it like a natural (must be his farm background), he left impressed. “This is a real-life simulator,” he said. “Even when you move the bucket up and down, it bounces off the deck like real life. It’s an excellent simulation!” Of course, simulation can only get you so far. That’s why our courses also have real-world experience built in, to make sure you’re ready for the demands of industry. “We’re going to teach you safety, a little bit about surveying and soils, basic maintenance and operations,” Cathcart says. “We’re going to spend a lot of time on the simulator and then we’re also going to put you in the field, in a local gravel pit, with a piece of equipment and an experienced instructor.” Complete an employer practicum as well, and you could graduate with a Certificate of Achievement from ACC, recognized by employers. 28 CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2015

EQUIPMENT We have 20 simulators, four each of excavators, bulldozers, wheeled loaders, heavy trucks and forklifts. The hardware includes Alienware laptops and large flat-screen monitors, along with custom-built joysticks and foot controls that mimic what is found on an actual piece of heavy equipment. They’re designed to clamp on to any table, meaning the simulators can be set up just about anywhere. When it comes to the software, provided by Canadian company Simlog, you’ll train in a fully three-dimensional simulated environment that looks like a worksite. The photos on these pages are actual screengrabs from the program you’ll be using. Each machine has a number of different levels, and you’ll have to master one technique before tackling the next. Your instructors will be able to track your progress through each level — including the number of times you hit reset — and guide you through the simulation. That ensures you’re ready and able when it’s time to get behind the wheel of the real thing.

As this course guide went to press, we were preparing to launch our very first training program using the simulators. But that’s not all. “One of the really exciting things about these simulators is that they’re designed to travel,” says Cathcart. “They’re fully mobile – we can pack them up in boxes like a concert roadie – and we can take them anywhere.” This means that ACC can come to you, and do heavy equipment training in your community. “There’s a need for heavy equipment operators, there’s a need to upgrade the skills of operators who are already in the industry and there’s a need to take this training to rural and remote communities — and being mobile, we can do that.”

AUSTRALIA A can of Foster’s and a Vegemite sandwich? Australian cuisine is so much more than that. Chef Ben Hernandez says that the land Down Under is filled with interesting, quirky tastes, and he’s looking forward to exploring them in his latest demonstration course, “A Taste of Australia.” “I’m a big fan of Australian food,” he says. “I like to experience all the different types of protein they have.” While he’s still planning the final slate of recipes, he says that lamb and seafood will likely have prime spots on the evening’s menu. What about kangaroo? Ben laughs. “I would like to use kangaroo,” he says, “but it might be a little on the pricey side.” It’s also a special-order meat that’s not commonly available, something he tries to avoid in courses that are geared towards introducing people to new things that they can then try for themselves. “I like to do something simple, that you can do at home,” he says. “So that you don’t have to go out, make a special trip to Winnipeg.” Like the other “Taste of…” courses that Ben has run (he’s in his third year of hosting them through ACC), the “Taste of Australia” course will feature a full meal that he prepares and serves in front of students.

While Ben says that he does do some prep work ahead of time, especially for dishes that take a longer amount of time to cook, or are more tedious to assemble, he’ll go through all the steps needed to take the raw ingredients and turn them into a finished dish. Students in the class also get a recipe packet to take home so that they can recreate the meal themselves. That, of course, goes along with the live demonstration of everything that Ben is making, as he makes it, along with running commentary that can teach students some of the techniques used by a professional chef. And once the food is made, it’s served, fresh from the kitchen to your plate. Yes, students get to eat the classwork. Ben says he likes to do about four courses to the meal, generally soup, salad, a main course and dessert. There are also wine pairings through the evening, although Ben says that there’s one aspect of Australian culture that might prompt a change to the normal wine pairings, “The beer thing is really big!” he says. “Beer could be one of the pairings.” Along with beer, lamb and seafood (maybe throw a shrimp on the barbie?), Ben says he’s looking at a coconut component, possibly for dessert. “I like food,” he says, “and I think Australia, a lot of people haven’t had.”

A Taste of Australia is scheduled for Wednesday night, Oct. 14, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts. Among the spacious grounds and historic buildings of the ACC North Hill campus, the course will be taught in the Manitoba Canola Growers Culinary Theatre — which features sloped seating so that everyone can see what Chef Ben Hernandez is doing.

As a demonstration course, you’ll watch as Ben shows off all the steps to prepare Aussie cuisine right in front of you. Then, as he plates each dish, you’ll get to sample every creation. Of course, what meal would be complete without a wine pairing? Ben says that Australia is rightly known for its vinyards. “There’s so much wine from Australia, it will definitely help the tenor of the dinner.”

MASTER GARDENER (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT The Master Gardener program is open to anyone with an interest in gardening. It is an opportunity to learn, share gardening experience and develop friendships through community volunteerism. Master Gardeners take pride in achieving their certification and continue to share their knowledge with others in their community.

HOW IT WORKS Students begin by paying an application fee of $99. The application fee includes a program text (Sustainable Gardening), all administrative and final examination fees. Students must then register and complete all seven courses that are listed in the table below. An internship of 40 hours of volunteer time must be completed before students are permitted to write the final exam. Students may begin accumulating hours any time after they pay their application fee. These hours can be acquired in many ways, including but not limited to, volunteering in a community garden, delivering presentations and writing articles. Mail your completed log sheet to the Centre of Continuing Studies; these hours must be approved in order to write your exam. After you complete all seven courses and your internship you may write the Master Gardener Theory Exam. This is a take-home, open book exam based on material from the program text and core courses.

PALLIATIVE CARE (CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT ONLINE) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT Hospice palliative care is both challenging and rewarding for the care provider who plays a critically important role in facilitating quality care for those living with a terminal illness – the patient, and his or her family and loved ones. A holistic approach to the study of care at the end of life enables graduates to consider the physical, psychological, practical, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of the dying and death experience and support therapeutic interventions.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED This is a post-graduate certification. Students must be a graduate with a recognized certificate, diploma, or degree in a related health field. To apply to the program, applicants must submit a Centre of Continuing Studies Registration Form, with copies of health-related credentials to Admissions and Registrations.

NURSING FOOT CARE (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT This program introduces the principles and practices of foot care as defined and established by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM), Nursing Foot Care Standards. Participants will be introduced to anatomy, structure and function of the lower extremities. Nursing assessment of the lower extremities, common foot afflictions, tools and the interventions necessary for safe and effective basic nursing foot care will be explored. Assessment and use of foot care instruments and products, gait differentiations, footwear, consultation and referral of clients, and evaluating the effectiveness of foot care, footwear and client education are included. Students will have the opportunity for supervised application of foot care theory and skills in both the classroom and the clinical area.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT & CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT The Vista Signing Naturally program prepares students to converse in American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-spatial language used extensively throughout English-speaking North America by members of the deaf community. This is a standardized curriculum that teaches signing and grammar, and provides information on the deaf culture. The program consists of two levels, each level consisting of three 40 hour courses. Each level is progressively more demanding and will require increasing degrees of skill.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED • Students must obtain a minimum grade of C in all courses to complete the program.

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION TO STATISTICS CANADA

Statistics Canada is the national statistical agency. As such, Statistics Canada carries out hundreds of surveys each year on a wide range of matters, including education. It is essential to follow students across time and institutions to understand, for example, the factors affecting enrolment demand at post-secondary institutions. The increased emphasis on accountability for public investment means that it is also important to understand ‘outcomes’. In order to carry out such studies, Statistics Canada asks all colleges and universities to provide data on students and graduates. Institutions collect and provide to Statistics Canada student identification information (student’s name, student ID number, Social Insurance Number), student contact information (address and telephone number), student demographic characteristics, enrolment information, previous education and labour force activity. Under the Federal Privacy Act, individuals can request access to their own, individual information held in federal information banks, including those held by Statistics Canada. The Federal Statistics Act provides the legal authority for Statistics Canada to obtain access to personal information held by educational institutions. The information may be used only for statistical purposes, and the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act prevent the information from being released in any way that would identify the student. Students who do not wish to have their information used are able to ask Statistics Canada to remove their identifying information from the national database.
