EFFECTIVE

FEEDBACK

8 ACC’S BRANDON CONTINUING STUDIES • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

His enthusiasm is infectious.

NOT ALWAYS HAVING THE ANSWERS IS CRITICAL by Surien Fourie

With a quick wit, willingness to share stories and laughter all around, Dr. Eric Dowsett puts you at ease. His teaching styles and eagerness to learn from you is what makes him such a unique instructor. We are fortunate to have him teaching courses in the Management Skills Certificate program including Effective Supervision at Assiniboine Community College’s (ACC) Centre of Continuing Studies. Eric Dowsett teaches a number of business management courses including Effective Supervision, Communications, Management Skill Development and Organizational Behaviour. Eric is a life-long learner himself and believes in sharing his knowledge with others. His courses teach managers how to give constructive feedback to the people they manage. “This is where theory meets reality. It allows for opportunities to learn and grow on both sides of the lectern,” says Eric. Through discussion and the sharing of stories, Eric helps validate the manager’s experience to let them know that they are not alone in their struggles. “My supervision skills have definitely improved from taking these classes,” says Teresa, a current student in Eric’s Communications class. “No matter how tired I am after work, or how much I really don’t want to go, I always know that there will be some really good discussions and once I get there it will be worth it.”

QUICK TIP Give effective feedback and provide necessary training for employees to succeed. Their success is reflective of yours as a manager.

ACC’S BRANDON CONTINUING STUDIES • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

9

According to Eric, teaching management skills is not like having a cookbook. It’s a matter of putting the skills you already have together with the skills you are learning from the courses and relating it back to your work environment. “Are we empowering people or are we taking power away from them?” he asks. “In today’s world, the biggest issue managers face is the lack of effective feedback,” says Eric. “People are being supervised and assessed according to their performance. There is discord when all of a sudden you are in a situation where there is an employee that thinks they are doing their job but the supervisor doesn’t really agree.” These are the types of reallife issues that Eric tries to address in his classes. Teresa recommends the courses that Eric teaches to everyone; even if you aren’t in a management or supervisory position yet. But she warns that you need to be prepared to do some work. Each of his classes start with group-based discussions led by real-life experiences. His students sit in groups, sharing their own experiences before they discuss with the whole class. Eric teaches students how to adapt to all kinds of situations they have or may encounter at work. He recommends changing your style according to the organization you work for and the personalities you are working with. “Is this the hill you want to die on?” he asks. In his opinion, choosing your battles are key to effective supervision.

Effective Supervision explores how to be a great supervisor, working well with others, dealing with issues that contribute to the whole group dynamic and other real challenges in today’s business environment. Effective Supervision is scheduled to start this May. Eric teaches the philosophy that “not always having the answer is critical.” He believes that he cannot discount the experiences of his students and their practices of management. He models his teaching on allowing students to discover the answers that suit their specific situations, guided through group discussions. His teaching style goes far beyond the traditional lecture-based learning environment. “Their skills, the skills of others, what we are covering in class and then it comes alive when they say ‘I’ve never thought of that.’ or ‘That might not work in my environment.’ and then I ask ‘Why not?’” says Eric. Perceptions are key to the building and break down in his courses. Eric likes to challenge individuals by teaching in a unique and unexpected format. For example, in his Management Skill Development course, he tests his students’ knowledge first, followed by a lesson on the content. “Such is life,” he argues with a grin. With his unorthodox teaching methods, he reaches students of all ages from all walks of life.

MEET

ERIC

Eric has been teaching for over 26 years in public high schools, post-secondary institutions and workshops alike. He enjoys motivating and empowering students. A lifelong Manitoban with a great sense of humour, he looks back at being a young teacher and learning quite quickly that all the answers he thought he had were wrong as they changed the questions on him. Most of his classes are unique in some way or another. Laughter is heard throughout with open discussions and stories shared.

Instructor Dr. Eric Dowsett

10 ACC’S BRANDON CONTINUING STUDIES • SPRING/SUMMER 2016

He loves teaching, “it’s not just a job,” he grins, “it exciting to see students get the ‘Eureka’ moment where they tune in and you are able to just step back and help them achieve what they need to achieve.”

Nurturing students is important to Eric. This is reflected in his teaching styles and enthusiasm to provide different opportunities for students to grow. “Content is a vehicle to help students feel a sense of control over what we are studying and helping them to take that next step,” says Eric. It is not about the content, but using it to motivate and empower students, which to him, is the whole goal of teaching. “Even though I’m finishing the Management Skills Certificate, I would be interested in taking other courses and workshops that Eric is facilitating,” says Teresa. “He really knows his stuff.” Teaching is not just a job to Eric. With twenty-five years of experience, his passion and unconventional teaching methods make him an asset to our teaching team.

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION TO STATISTICS CANADA

Statistics Canada is the national statistical agency. As such, Statistics Canada carries out hundreds of surveys each year on a wide range of matters, including education. It is essential to follow students across time and institutions to understand, for example, the factors affecting enrolment demand at post-secondary institutions. The increased emphasis on accountability for public investment means that it is also important to understand ‘outcomes’. In order to carry out such studies, Statistics Canada asks all colleges and universities to provide data on students and graduates. Institutions collect and provide to Statistics Canada student identification information (student’s name, student ID number, Social Insurance Number), student contact information (address and telephone number), student demographic characteristics, enrolment information, previous education and labour force activity. Under the Federal Privacy Act, individuals can request access to their own, individual information held in federal information banks, including those held by Statistics Canada. The Federal Statistics Act provides the legal authority for Statistics Canada to obtain access to personal information held by educational institutions. The information may be used only for statistical purposes, and the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act prevent the information from being released in any way that would identify the student. Students who do not wish to have their information used are able to ask Statistics Canada to remove their identifying information from the national database. Further information on the use of this information can be obtained from Statistics Canada’s web site: www.statscan.ca or by writing to the Post-Secondary Section, Centre for Education Statistics, 17th Floor, R.H. Coats Building, Tunney’s Pasture, Ottawa, Canada, K1A 0T6.
