WELDING HAS BUILT WHAT WE ARE TODAY by Surien Fourie

24

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2016

With his big personality, enthusiasm and laughter,

Jim McGhie, Welding instructor at ACC truly cares about his students. He loves to see students graduate from the program trained in all aspects of welding and have the skills to make something of themselves. He teaches the four-month certificate program, Welding CT that has run each fall for the past four years. This program focuses on the theory and practical aspects of oxyacetylene, shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and special processes. Graduates may earn credit towards Level 1 Welder Apprenticeship (Welding & Fabrication) if they meet the requirements. Jim loves teaching and seeing the light go on when theories click. “I like seeing somebody come in with no skill and leaving with skill,” said McGhie. “I love to help people succeed.” In order to succeed in welding, safety is key. Safety of industry and being prepared for industry in a safe manner is one of the benefits that students acquire when taking the welding program at ACC. “Skill is something that comes with time,” said McGhie. The education of safety is an important factor to learn when welding. He cares about his students and keeps in touch with them. One of his former students got injured on the job. He contacted her asking, “Could there have been something more that I could have taught you to prevent this?” Her answer was no, it was her own mistake that almost cost her thumb. Jim uses these experiences as a learning tool pressing the importance of making the right choices, learning the rights to be safe and refusal of unsafe work. According to Jim there are challenges that the students face when taking this course. Firstly, their lack of life and work experience can be a deterrent. “Some of them have never actually had a job or ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2016

25

an industry based job,” said McGhie. Secondly, they don’t have any site experience making the safety aspect of the training very important. There is a lot more to welding than just the practical skill. “A welder doesn’t just need the practical, safety and creative skills but they also need some interpersonal skills when dealing with clients, co-workers or the industry in general,” said McGhie. Welding and all aspects of welding can be intimidating. “I’ve seen a few tears on the first day in the shop but it just takes some encouragement,” said McGhie. There are plenty of learning opportunities in the classroom throughout the program. “When we lift steel between the two floors we incorporate it into the learning,” said McGhie. “It is a good experience and teaches safety.” Jim’s favourite part of the course is the group projects as it explores the

student’s creativity and teaches them team building skills. Everyone builds it together working on sections in small groups and then in a larger group putting the project together. “Recently, I incorporated smaller projects for personal use and then a bigger group project which helps students visualize the pieces coming together as a whole,” said McGhie. This program embodies the college’s educational philosophy of learn by doing. “We have a new miniature material handling catchy crane that has an electric crane and hand crane on it,” said McGhie. “It’s a training tool that shows the students how to lift a piece of steel or lift a box up.” Which of course they all try. There are two fields in welding; namely; production welding and industrial welding. In the region, the number one industry is production welding. “Welding offers a broad spectrum of opportunities with what you could do and where you could go,” said McGhie.

A lot of people with no experience start off as a production welder and then the experience leads them into industrial welding. “Industrial welding is where you go in and do on-site welding and it is something different every day; one day you might work in the shop with fabricating a piece and then you take it to the site and install it,” explained McGhie. Welding is hard work. “This trade has always produced some hard workers and people that can really contribute to society,” said McGhie. A lot of the big projects in Winnipeg, like the Human Rights Museum and new stadium, were built by iron workers and welders. The welding program at ACC supplies the community with qualified tradespeople. “This program provides a good start for students,” said McGhie. “They are qualified people that are ready for work.”

APPLIED COUNSELLING SKILLS IN PARKLAND

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2016

Andre Lorrain, Instructor for the Applied Counselling Skills Program in Dauphin, loves seeing

his students grow and learning alongside them. He is a life-long learner, with two Bachelor Degrees and is currently working on his Masters in Conflict Resolution. He has fourteen students in his current class in Parkland. He emphasizes the importance of learning the material but also taking the theory and applying it to real-life situations. “My goal is to try and show them how it is applied to everyday life so that they can see it come to life,” said Lorrain. “I like the stories, sharing and the real life applications of theories learned,” said Britney Clarkson, student in the Applied Counselling Skills Program. “The program involves a lot of group work, reading, essay writing and presentations.” Cont’d on the next page.

ANDRE LORRAIN Applied Counselling Skills Instructor, Parkland Campus Hometown: Gravelbert, SK “I love seeing my students grow and learning alongside them. I hope to showcase the necessary skills they need to succeed and how it is applied to everyday life, so that they can see it come to life.”

The average student for the Applied Counselling Skills Program is of a mature age and emotional state. Andre works closely with his students to balance their academic, work and family life while achieving the outcomes of the program. He takes into account the obstacles that mature students face and works around them. The isolation of rural communities combined with Manitoba winters can also prove to be a barrier at times. With these programs offered in rural communities, it allows students the opportunity to study without relocating. There are a number of jobs available in the community after graduation. However, some of the students in the current graduating class are taking this program to augment their skills in the areas that they are already working in or are planning to continue with their education. “I plan to continue my education and become an addictions counsellor,” said Clarkson. The ideal person to take this particular program is someone who is passionate and wanting to help others. “They need to want to grow and be introspective in their own lives,” said Lorrain. The combination of these two makes the ideal suited student for this particular program. Andre is honored to teach the Applied Counselling Skills Program at ACC and loves living in rural Manitoba. With his teaching background, he will always hunger to teach in rural areas, “I learn and hopefully they learn as well”.

BRITNEY CLARKSON Applied Counselling Skills student, Parkland Campus Hometown: Grandview, MB “This program has taught me to look at my own personal values and beliefs. I enjoy the stories, sharing of ideas and real life applications of the theories learned. I plan to continue my education and become an addictions counsellor.” For more information on the program, go to page 56.

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2016

Are you said to have a green thumb? Do you find gardening relaxing? Assiniboine Community

by Surien Fourie

College offers a Master Gardener program in Winnipeg. Master Gardeners are individuals who are passionate about gardening who formed a group educated and certified through accredited universities and colleges. Being a graduate of the Master Gardener Program and member of the Manitoba Master Gardener Association (MMGA), you require experience in gardening knowledge, have a passion for ‘passing on your knowledge’ through various mediums and helping organizations begin gardening programs. “We want to help the gardeners of Manitoba be inspired and motivated in the joy of gardening,” said Colleen Zacharias, co-chair of the Manitoba Master Gardener Association. The Manitoba Master Gardener Association (MMGA) was formally organized in 2011 as a supporting and networking body for Master Gardeners in training as well as Certified Master Gardeners in the Province of Manitoba. It was developed to create a skilled gardener resource for communities. The concept is for good gardeners to take further training so that they can become more competent and be able to advise and teach amateur gardeners in their community. The association offers a variety of opportunities to reach the community. Their website is a valuable resource with an avenue for question and answers and numerous how-to videos. Highlighting community projects, including historic gardens and serving as Master Gardener Ambassadors at Assiniboine Park to answer plant questions and educate the gardening public. The association also hosts plant clinics to answer gardening questions.

There are many benefits to those who complete this course and become MMGA members. “As a volunteer service organization, the benefits include ongoing lifelong learning, helping individuals, volunteering and networking with likeminded people in the pursuit of a common interest and the sheer enjoyment of participating in a range of garden-related activities,” said Zacharias. The program and association encompasses enjoyment for its members. “Is doing what you love a challenge?” said Zacharias. Studying and continual updating of techniques are part of the certification process as being a Master Gardener is an ongoing commitment. “Fact learning about things that interest you is never that difficult,” explained Zacharias.

52

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • FALL 2016

Being a member of the association has its benefits. “We arrange for educational events during the year for its members and they are entitled to receive discounts at a number of participating garden centres,” said Zacharias. If you are a keen gardener with some practical experience who wants to develop their knowledge and serve their community; this program is for you.

The MMGA in Winnipeg is still a growing organization. Colleen Zacharias hopes to develop more exciting and interesting programs and connections for their membership. For more information please attend an orientation evening Tuesday, September 27th at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory at 7 p.m.. Visit their website, mgmanitoba.com or email your gardening questions to ask@mgmanitoba.com.
