10 ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • WINTER 2015/16

When Jim Atkinson and Darlene Perkin started teaching photography courses for ACC Continuing Studies, one of their biggest limitations was film. Students could only take a relatively few frames and then had to send it away to get developed before Jim or Darlene could offer feedback. Soon, they branched out into darkroom procedures. And now, 18 years later, they’re leading classes in Photoshop techniques and digital photography that move at the speed of modern technology. “The immediate viewing of digital is the biggest change,” recalled Darlene during a recent class early this winter. “People can see what they’ve done, and we can help them immediately.” These days, the two take students through all aspects of photography in a series of courses, from introductory workshops to full-on tutorials that delve into real detail.

TAG-TEAM TEACHERS FIND PHOTOGRAPHY A SNAP by Grant Hamilton

But while skills in composition and manual controls of F-stop and exposure remain about the same, a lot else has changed. Rather than shutting themselves into a darkroom and changing chemicals, Jim and Darlene turned down the lights at a recent class so that students could better see their laptop projection of Photoshop tools and brushes. As students worked away at their own digital compositions, Jim and Darlene said they were always learning new things themselves. “I’m always amazed by what people produce, the ideas they have,” Darlene says. “We show them the concept and they turn it into something new.” “It’s a two-way street, learning,” Jim adds. “Students come up with something I’ve never done … there’s just so many buttons in Photoshop.”

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • WINTER 2015/16

11

So in a world where there’s too much Photoshop for any one person to master it all, and where students can find and download tutorials or how-to videos online, why is there still so much interest in actual classes? “I don’t know what I don’t know,” said student Aaron Harris, a mechanic who got a camera last Christmas and wanted to improve his photo skills. “The class is good. It’s the right combination of theory and hands-on.” Seated next to him, classmate Sheila Elder said she drove in every week from her farm near Wawanesa to learn. “I wished I’d had a better camera when my daughter graduated (three years ago),” she said. “I decided I wanted one before my son graduated (last June).” Then, after really digging into photography through a recent trip to Europe, she’s now working at the postprocessing portions, with a Photoshop class. “I’m playing with it more,” she says, adding that having an actual class helped. “It’s a small size, you can talk to anybody. Peoples’ photos all get laid out, you get ideas.” Interacting with other students has proven as important as the lessons from instructors, she says. I don’t think of myself as very creative,” she says, despite evidence to the

contrary all over her screen and desk, “but it’s helped to push myself out of automatic mode. Now I want to learn about dressing up the photos.” Many students are like that, say Jim and Darlene: people who can benefit from group learning, from being able to ask questions of qualified instructors, and from being able to learn at a pace that’s adjusted for them. “A lot of students, instead of reading books, they like someone showing them what to do,” Jim says. “There are a lot of tutorials on the Internet, but they often leave something out, that they assume you know.” As more and more people carry a camera around with them everywhere they go, integrated into their phone, there’s been an explosion of easy photography, but Jim and Darlene say there’s still an opportunity to teach the basics. “There are so many things they didn’t know they could do,” says Jim.

“It’s awesome,” says Photoshop 1 student Sonja Manning. A Grade 9 student by day, she drives in with her mom’s friend every week from Baldur to take the ACC evening class. “It’s very interactive — better than some of the classes at school.”

“Or that they don’t know,” adds Darlene. After 18 years teaching together, they have a tendency to finish each other’s sentences. “What surprises me,” says Jim, “is that people don’t know what they can do with their camera.” Today’s devices, he says, are loaded with features, but fewer and fewer people bother to fiddle with the settings. He lists built-in filters, white balancing, low-light shooting and ISO adjustments as some of the basics that they can teach that can make a huge difference in student photography. “Even using a tripod,” he says. “Once you show them what they can do with a tripod, compared to without.” One of their favourite tricks, they agree, is HDR photography, which stands for high dynamic range. “Most people don’t know about it, but a lot of people have it on their phone,” Darlene says. “It allows you to capture details in highlights and in shadows, where before you had to choose. “You can capture what your eyes can see.” Like many techniques, HDR photos can be taken in-camera, or combined later in Photoshop, they say. “There’s often two or three ways to do the same thing,” Jim notes. “And they’re both right,” finishes Darlene.

In fact, she says, learning new ways to do things is one of the reasons they have repeat students, who come to take the same class more than once. “In photography,” she says, “even if you repeat courses, you learn something new.” They’re both proud of many of the students they’ve had who have gone on to careers — either with studios or in news photography. “There are a lot of talented people out there,” Darlene says. Her best story? They both laugh: “One student, she was so excited about something she learned in class, she drove through a red light on the way home!” Luckily, no red-light camera.

QUICK TIP Photography instructor Jim Atkinson offered some guidance to Photoshop 1 students on how to pick a great colour for borders or mats around pictures. While classic white or black will set off most photos starkly, Jim told students to use the eyedropper tool and to select a colour from inside the photo itself. “Why wouldn’t you pick a colour that’s in the photograph,” he asked rhetorically. “You know it’s going to match.”

22 ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • WINTER 2015/16

It can be tough to focus on healthy eating, but the effort is worth it, says Kristen Soloway. A registered dietitian who was born and raised in Dauphin, Soloway is back at home, and looking forward to leading healthy eating classes at the ACC Parkland Campus through the Centre of Continuing Studies. “Nutrition is a main pillar of health throughout the life cycle,” she said in an interview. “After smoking and excessive alcohol use, nutrition has the biggest influence on our health.” The statistics are stark: “Half of the top 10 leading causes of death in Canada are nutrition-related,” she said, “(and) our understanding of the connection between nutrition and mental health is also growing.” Healthy living can be a challenge that’s close to home, she says. “Local challenges include access to healthy, affordable food — especially in communities outside of Dauphin,” she says, adding that some people don’t have good food preparation or planning skills. “I also feel a lot of people have become discouraged with healthy eating after imposing strict regimes upon themselves.”

WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR MEALS? HERE’S SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT by Grant Hamilton

Combined with our busy culture, where people constantly feel they’re under a time crunch, Soloway suggests that there’s a perception that healthy eating simply takes too much time. “Also contributing to confusion are the myths, misinformation, and multiple sources of nutrition information,” she says, along with “rapidly changing guidelines and multiple food fads and bandwagons to jump on.” Cutting through all of that with some clear, easy-to-act-on information is a goal in her classes.

MEET

KRISTEN

A registered dietitian who was born and raised in Dauphin, Kristen Soloway earned her B.Sc. in Human Nutritional Sciences from the University of Manitoba and then completed her dietetic internship at home in Dauphin. Required to become an RD, the nine-week internship is from the Manitoba Partnership Dietetic Education Program and although it’s based in Winnipeg, it requires nine weeks in a rural centre. Choosing to stay near home, Kristen’s first job was also in Dauphin, as a Dietitian Educator for the Diabetes and Heart Health Program with Prairie Mountain Health. This 18-month term position involved one-on-one nutrition and lifestyle counselling with clients with chronic conditions or simply interest in eating better. Now, she says that she’s eager to run classes through ACC’s Continuing Studies. “I really like teaching and working with students,” she says.

“It will also include information on putting it all together, avoiding the fads, and facts and fallacies in nutrition,” she says. According to 2011 statistics provided by Soloway, the monthly cost of healthy eating for a single male in the Parkland region has been calculated at $292.12. In some ways, it can be more expensive to ensure a healthy, nutritious diet. “Preparing a balanced meal at home will most likely cost more than preparing 1-2 packages of say, ramen noodles or macaroni and cheese,” she says. But there are some easy ways to cut costs while increasing healthy options on the plate. Obvious options, she says, are avoiding the convenience costs of pre-shredded cheese or prewashed lettuce. “Some foods are cheaper to make at home yourself, some foods almost seem cheaper just to buy, but it also depends on what you have at home,”

she says. “For example, if you garden, you may not need to purchase as many vegetables so it could be cheaper to make a vegetable dish versus buying it.” Taking a positive approach to healthy living means that Soloway doesn’t advocate for the traditional restrictive methods. “More is the key … not less,” she says. “More sleep, more physical activity, more vegetables.” She also recognizes that treats can play their part in your diet. In fact, when asked for a “dietitian party trick” she turns to dessert. “Lately I’ve enjoyed converting cakes and cupcakes all to mini-cupcakes,” she says. “They’re cute, easy to serve, cater to all those that want, ‘just a little piece,’ and I feel you get more icing per serving of cake (yum!).”

TAKE THE

CLASS HEALTHY EATING

What is nutrition? Why do our bodies need nutrients? What are the dangers of too much or too little of a nutrient? Join us for two evenings (Feb 2 and 3) from 7–9 p.m. as we look to answer these questions and learn how to take charge of your health through healthy eating. Call 204-622-2222 to sign up for this class at our Parkland Campus in Dauphin.

THE TOP 3

We asked Kristen if she could share a few quick facts about nutrition and healthy eating that are important to know. She said:

1. Don’t overthink healthy eating. 2. Prepare homemade meals as much as you can. 3. Savour your food, rather than simply swallowing it. But she also said that it was important not to obsess over food rules. Setting strict barriers like “I should only have one small piece of _____” or “Starting tomorrow I will not eat ____” set yourself up for failure, and should be avoided. Instead, think of her top three tips as guidelines. There are no good foods or bad foods, Kristen says. Rather, there are foods to eat more of the time and foods to eat less of the time.

THE ART OF

TEAMWORK

Marlies Soltys says that creating art with your coworkers is a great way to build confidence and teamwork.

32 ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • WINTER 2015/16

What do you get when you combine art, business and a background in counselling and education?

BUILD A BOND WHILE MAKING ART by Grant Hamilton

Probably the only corporate team-building in the province where you end up with something you can hang on your wall. “It’s a great confidence-builder,” says Marlies Soltys, who runs Modern Mosaics out of Minnedosa. “You can say, ‘I made this. And it looks good.’” Modern Mosaics sounds like a pretty great home-based business all by itself. Soltys can install premium kitchen backsplash or tub surround to anyone’s specifications. Or, she can bust out her artistic chops for custom mosaic designs that incorporate whatever patterns or images someone desires. Then, the twist: She’ll come and lead you through doing it all yourself, along with your co-workers. It’s a tremendous teambuilding experience, she says. “It’s interesting to me — people get so into it and they can hardly talk,” she says. “You can ask them questions and they’ll give you answers, but otherwise they’re quietly absorbed. That’s awesome; it gives them time to themselves, lets them use a different, more creative part of the brain. And they get to share that experience with others, with their co-workers.” Soltys has an Applied Counselling certificate from ACC and she says that the benefits for employees — and their bosses — are clear. “The artistic component helps with self-reflection,” she says, something that people in today’s busy society don’t always have a lot of. She knows busy. Soltys also works full time as an educational assistant. So it might seem like she doesn’t have a lot of time for a second career at home. But in fact, the opposite is true. She can’t wait to expand, and recently won three awards from a Dragons-Den style proposal in Minnedosa where she

presented her idea of a combination art studio and creative space. Meanwhile, along with installs and custom gift work, Soltys is already looking for post-Christmas teambuilding opportunities. She’s partnered with ACC’s Centre of Continuing Studies to offer either mosaic or painting-based teambuilding across Westman. In one recent team-building exercise, she ran an art afternoon, featuring oversize puzzle pieces that were individually painted by different coworkers. Although each piece was painted in a completely different style, the message they send when interlocked was unmistakeable. “It doesn’t matter what your job title is, you’re important,” Soltys says. People in the art afternoon painting project worked on their own, but came together as a team in the end, and the overall message of the teambuilding is how different people, each making unique contributions, can help assemble something bigger and more varied than they could have alone.

34 ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • WINTER 2015/16

“Especially when you’re working with pieces of a puzzle, you can’t have any of the pieces missing,” Soltys says. “Each piece is so different, yet when you put them together, they look fantastic as well.”

NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION TO STATISTICS CANADA

Statistics Canada is the national statistical agency. As such, Statistics Canada carries out hundreds of surveys each year on a wide range of matters, including education. It is essential to follow students across time and institutions to understand, for example, the factors affecting enrolment demand at post-secondary institutions. The increased emphasis on accountability for public investment means that it is also important to understand ‘outcomes’. In order to carry out such studies, Statistics Canada asks all colleges and universities to provide data on students and graduates. Institutions collect and provide to Statistics Canada student identification information (student’s name, student ID number, Social Insurance Number), student contact information (address and telephone number), student demographic characteristics, enrolment information, previous education and labour force activity. Under the Federal Privacy Act, individuals can request access to their own, individual information held in federal information banks, including those held by Statistics Canada. The Federal Statistics Act provides the legal authority for Statistics Canada to obtain access to personal information held by educational institutions. The information may be used only for statistical purposes, and the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act prevent the information from being released in any way that would identify the student. Students who do not wish to have their information used are able to ask Statistics Canada to remove their identifying information from the national database. Further information on the use of this information can be obtained from Statistics Canada’s web site: www.statscan.ca or by writing to the Post-Secondary Section, Centre for Education Statistics, 17th Floor, R.H.
