FROM THE CEO A warm welcome to our mid-year edition of Vacations Magazine! I hope you enjoy reading all the great information on the many fabulous ways you can enjoy your membership. Our refurbishment team continues to excel, having completed an outstanding job on the soft refurbishment at The Sebel Swan Valley The Vines earlier this year. I have recently returned from inspecting exciting progress at The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach, currently undergoing a total makeover, with the beachfront building closed until it re-opens in early August. I am delighted to report the team have outdone themselves yet again, delivering probably their best work to date. The transformation of this hotel includes a total overhaul of the reception area and lobby, new kitchens and bathrooms in the rooms and a contemporary design concept throughout. The result is nothing short of spectacular. I highly recommend a visit to this breathtaking location, rated earlier in the year by TripAdvisor as Australia’s best beach. Accor Vacation Club Travel has gone from strength to strength in 2019, with an increasing number of Members utilising the program to enjoy a vast array of travel benefits. Discover more about Accor Vacation Club Travel inside this edition! I want to extend a big thanks to all of you for following us on our social media pages and for posting lots of terrific comments and reviews. Some of our Club properties are in the enviable position of being Number 1 in their categories on TripAdvisor, which is so wonderful to see and recognition of the teams for the hard work they put in to being the best at what they do. Just recently we reached a major milestone on our Facebook page when we recorded over 10,000 followers.

The site is an excellent forum for Members to find tips on how to get the best out of the Club and to share their holiday experiences with other Members. It’s also a great resource for finding up to the minute updates on what’s happening within your Club. If you are not currently following us on social media, I strongly suggest that you do. We are seeing a very successful and fun filled ski season at The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort and I would remind you to start thinking about booking for next year. The team at the Resort are already planning a wide range of activities pre and post ski to ensure your stay is truly memorable. If you haven’t trying skiing before, don’t worry, we have all the kit you may need for hire on site. We are also in the process of relocating our Head Office. After almost 15 years based in Robina on the Gold Coast, we will be moving to Surfers Paradise this September. We hope the centralised location will ensure we get to meet many more Members face to face. Next time you are visiting the Gold Coast please feel free to pop in and catch up for a coffee and a chat. We’ll keep you posted on the move and more information about the new HQ will be communicated shortly. Until next time, I wish you all happy holidays!

Cold winter, HOT property It’s one of our most popular Club properties all year round, but in winter it is a truly magical place! The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort is nestled in Victoria’s majestic High Country region, and close to some of Australia’s best ski and snowboarding spots. The property is just half an hour from popular Mt Buller Ski Resort and twenty minutes from the nearby township of Mansfield. Location, location folks! In winter, The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort embraces its fabulous location close to the snow. Each year, Accor Vacation Club’s Resort Team create an exclusive range of ‘winter warmer’ and ski focused events to create even more excitement for our guests, with lots of creative and fun ways to help Members stay warm during the snow season. From VIP Ski fittings to winter menus (think hot curry nights!), there is always lots of winter fun to be had. Of course if just sitting in front of a warm fireplace and enjoying a hot chocolate or glass of wine if more your style, then that is an easy option too.

The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort

For families thinking ahead for holiday bookings in winter 2020, there are also lots of year-round kid friendly past times (once you’ve ticked off building a snowman). Mini golf, tennis, basketball, games room (coin operated), board games and table tennis are all great options for those young, and young at heart. But let’s face it. One of the main reason people travel to the Victorian Alps when the temperature drops is to see and get amongst the snow! For snow lovers, The Sebel offers its own convenient on-site Ski Hire Shop – a one stop destination for all of your equipment needs. This shop is open seven days a week over winter, with fully trained fitting staff on hand to assist you with your every need. Novices need not be afraid. The team knows what to recommend and loves helping first time skiers out to have them moving like a pro on the slopes in no time. The Sebel’s ski store also stocks a range of brands and merchandise, including snow chain hire for Members

Feature

wanting to explore the region by car or 4WD in winter. Of course for those without a car, the Mansfield Mt Buller Bus Service operates throughout the ski season. Passengers can be picked up from The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort and dropped off at the Mt Buller Village, with the option of purchasing a one way or return ticket (bookings for this service are essential and can be discussed with the Resort Reception Team once you’ve checked in). Something that is a luxury, yet sometimes hard to find in other Resorts, are heated drying rooms. The Sebel proudly offers these for Members as part of your accommodation booking, whether you choose to stay in a Deluxe Two-Bedroom Apartments, or a Studio Room. These drying rooms are a great way to key all of your ski gear safe – and dry – when off the snow. After a day on the slopes, don’t forget to check out the Resort’s spa and sauna. An ideal way to unwind, before heading up to The Sebel’s restaurant and bar – Peaks – for a menu of great local cuisine and wines.

Members Insider In June 2019, our lovely Members Karen and Peter Smith rugged up and enjoyed a wonderful winter break in the Victoria Alps, staying at The Sebel. Here is what they had to say about their recent trip!

What secrets did we find in the area of The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort? We thought we would be doing bush walks on this visit, but after a big dump of snow, the ski season opened a week early so we were able to play in the snow instead. We also visited wineries and after a scenic drive discovered the beautiful view from Powers Lookout. We also enjoyed delicious Devonshire tea at Deb’s Jamieson Cafe. Not to forget reliving “The Castle” at Bonnie Doon – how’s the “serenity”! Over the years we have stayed at many of the Accor Vacation Club accommodation, celebrating birthdays, anniversaries or just heading off for a getaway. We were very impressed with the lounge area where we could sit in a comfortable space enjoying the open fire, have a drink and meet other Members. Everyone talked about the different places that they had been to, inspiring each other to visit and stay at different locations. Cheers Karen and Peter Smith

Holiday High Five

We asked our hotel hosts from across the Accor Vacation Club for their advice on some of the best ways to while away your days at our properties.

Here are some of the ‘top five’ things to see and do, from the local team members who know best.

Great Barrier Reef

Palm Cove, Tropical North Queensland

As recommended by Emil Gan, Hotel Manager, The Sebel Palm Cove Coral Coast Resort. 1. Great Barrier Reef – Tropical North Queensland is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef on our doorstep. Snorkel, scuba or take a glass bottom boat out to explore it as a day trip. 2. Kuranda SkyRail + Scenic Railway (Gold Class) – These are both great ways to see the oldest tropical rainforest on earth! The rail is a spectacular winding journey through the forest, with majestic steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls on display, while the SkyRail transports you through the air by gondola for an amazing view of the rainforest canopy from above. 3. Historic Village Herberton – This is an open-air museum with restored buildings and thousands of original items displayed in and around them that reflect everyday life in North Queensland, as it was from the 1880s onward. 4. Granite Gorge Nature Park - Just over an hour’s scenic drive from Palm Cove, you can walk into the gorge and hand feed the small colony of rock wallabies that call it home. You will need to pay a small admission fee to the park but this includes a bag of wallaby food. 5. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park - the ultimate place to experience the rich and ancient cultures unique to Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Historic Village Herberton

The Club

Mt Buller

Pinnacle Valley, Victorian High Country

As recommended by Jordan Wilson, All rounder at The Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort. 1. Mansfield Coffee Merchant – A great place for lunch and coffee, especially when heading out from The Sebel on a day trip! 2. Mansfield Zoo – Feed the deer, kangaroo, camel and more. Watch the zoo keeper Dave feeding the two rare white lions. It’s a fantastic and unique experience. 3. Mt Buller – The view from the summit is spectacular with 360 degree views of the High Country. 4. The Pap Mountain Reserve and Lookout – If you have a 4wd, then check out The Paps for an awesome view of Lake Mansfield and Lake Eildon. 5. The Waterfall Walk – The Victorian High Country around Mansfield is a bushwalker’s paradise. I recommend the 7km round trip from Carter’s Mill camp ground that takes you to a waterfall. This picturesque reserve is on the banks of the Delatite River and is perfect for picnicing and enjoying the outdoors. The Pap Mountain Reserve and Lookout

WINTER 2019

The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane As recommended by Jo Bowman our Front Office Team Member at The Sebel Melbourne Flinders Lane. 1. The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) – houses a collection of both Australian and International art. Spread acorss two locations, the NGV hosts events and exhibitions troughout the year and is opened all year round (except christmas day) with free entry to the public. 2. Eureka Skydeck – Views for days! Head over to the Eureka Sykdeck to enjoy the spectular views of Melbourne. It is also home to the world’s only Edge Experience, a glass cube which extends 3 metres out from the building and suspends you nearly 300 metres over the city – glass walls, ceiling and floor. Scary for some, but exhilarating to have the city clearly beneath you. 3. East End Theater District - The East End is home to six historic theatres in Melbourne, all within walking distance: the Princess, the Comedy, Her Majesty’s, the Athenaeum, the Regent, and the Forum. Each week dozens of theatrical productions are staged, ranging from musicals, live music, festivals, comedy and children’s shows and special events. 4. Queen Victoria Market/ Night Market – One of the major landmarks in Melbourne and is the largest open air market in the outhern hemisphere. Rain, hail or shine, there is always an event on at the QVM, wether it’s the live music, fresh produce, arts and crafts hand made by the locals or the array of food stalls, QVC has something for everyone. 5. MCG Tour – The Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known as ‘’The G’’, is the largest in Australia and is within walking distance of the city centre. Experience Melbourne’s sporting culture by going behind the scenes and exploring one of Australias’s most iconic landmarks. Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Club

Hot Water Beach

Puka Park, New Zealand As recommended by Nisha Goswami, Assistant Manager at the Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort. 1. Hot Water Beach – Hot springs at the beach allow you to dig your own spa pool and enjoy the streaming hot water. Best to plan your visit at (or around) low tide, and make sure to pack a spade and some beach towels from the resort. 2. Cathedral Cove – Accessible by foot or water taxi enjoy this stunning beach edged by white cliffs and walk through the Cathedral Cove. I highly recommend exploring the cove by sea kayak. 3. Karanagahake Gorge – Discover gorgeous walkways through the bush and along a river as well as a 1km long tunnel walk. Make sure to stop at the Falls Retreat for lunch and Gold Discovery Centre in Waihi. 4. Raupara Watergardens – Located just North of Thames on the Western side of the Coromandel these gardens are well worth a visit, second to none in tranquillity and relaxation. While you are there just go a bit further up the road to the famous Square Kauri.

Cathedral Cove

5. Driving Creek Railway – Don’t miss a ride on the Driving Creek Railway, NZ’s only narrow-gauge and steepest railway! It will take you on a total climb of 115 meters through lush native forest. Allow a full day for this trip.

Driving Creek Railway

12

Manly to Shelly Beach Walk

Manly Beach, Sydney As recommended by Jason Aungle, Maintenance Manager at The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach. 1. Manly to Shelly Beach Walk – Wonder down to Shelly beach and ensure you stop along the way to hire some snorkel gear and have a swim with the fish, followed by a leisurely lunch at The Boathouse or Bower Restaurant 2. Manly Fast Ferry Ride – Hop on the Manly Fast Ferry to Circular Quay, you may even spot some whales on your way. Be sure to snap a selfie as you sail by the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. 3. North Head Sanctuary – Stroll over to The North Head Sanctuary and take in the breathtaking views of Sydney’s harbour. Discover the native plants and animals, or even stop over for a glass of wine at the Bella Vista Café. 4. Home and Away Tour to Summer Bay – Jump on the Flamin’ Galah Sydney Tour bus to explore the famous Summer Bay where they film Home and Away. They also host private charter tours to the scenic Blue Mountains or The Hunter Valley for wine tasting.

Manly Fast Ferry Ride

5. Pines Brewing Company – Manly’s only local brewery where they brew their own beer, this is the perfect place to be to wind down with one of their famous beers listening to live music. They even host a brewery tour every Friday. Located on Manly Wharf, it is a short walk from The Sebel Manly Beach.

The Club Busselton, Western Australia As recommended by your host Receptionist at The Sebel Busselton

Maike

Lawrence-Brown,

1. Check out Busselton Jetty - It only costs $4 for adults and it’s free for kids to walk out to the end of the jetty and back. 2. Did You Know? - The ‘Caves Road’ between Dunsborough and Margaret River is aptly named – for it runs along the length of the limestone Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, undercut by over 150 caves. A small number of these are open to the public and they are just fascinating! The ‘Ngilgi Cave’ is just a 25 minute drive from our resort. 3. Yallingup Maze - is a great spot for all ages. The maze changes throughout the year, so you can keep going back for unlimited fun. There is also a great café with puzzles to entertain the whole family. 4. Simmo’s Ice Cream - has so many different flavours of ice cream and sorbets to choose from. Another great place that’s fun for all ages. Have a go at their fantastic crazy golf whilst you’re here and remember to visit the ice cream eating Emu! 5. We are Located - next to some of the best beaches in the world. The glimmering turquoise waters of Geographe Bay stretch up the cape through Dunsborough, Castle Rock, Meelup and Point Piquet finishing at Eagle Bay. If you are visiting from September to early December, make sure you keep an eye out for humpback, southern right, blue and minke whales whilst on their migrations both North and South. Alternatively the other side of the Cape offers world class surfing beaches including Yallingup, Smiths and Injidup.

The Sydney Opera House Guided Walking Tour

Darling Harbour, Sydney As recommended by Helen Hemingway, Hotel Manager at The Sebel Darling Harbour The Pinnacle 1. Excellent Coffee and a Great Breakfast? - You can’t go past Social Brew 2. Take in a World Class Show - The Sydney Lyric Theatre or The Capitol. It guarantees a great evening out. 3. The Rocks Markets - are on from 10am-5pm every Saturday and Sunday. It’s the place to go to score a gift or souvenir that is unique. 4. The Sydney Opera House Guided Walking Tour - A fantastic venture under the sails and into the heart of Australia’s greatest building

Food and Coffee at Social Brew

5. Want a Local Secret Dining Spot - A favourite for those who spend a lot of time at Darling Harbour? For outstanding Taiwanese cuisine, elegant, but not expensive, I recommend Blue Eye Dragon.

Bradman Oval and Cricket Museum

Bowral and the Southern Highlands As recommended by Paul Boland, Hotel Manager at The Sebel Bowral Heritage Park 1. Bradman Oval and Cricket Museum – Just four minutes from The Sebel Bowral, it’s a must do for cricket fans! 2. Retford Park – This historic home is a place of great heritage significance, and is part of the National Trust of Australia. The garden is a delight to wander through - a grand drive and Victorian Italianate homestead with a collection of rare and magnificent trees. Strangely, its also home to five emus that wander the grounds there! 3. Wineries and Vineyards – There are many lovely boutique wineries with cellar door offerings and restaurants to tempt you in the Southern Highlands. It’s the place to go Retford Park to sip a good, local pinot noir in front of a crackling fire! In this part of the world the grapes ripen slowly producing very elegant and distinctive tasting wines, so joining in a wine tour or visiting few cellar doors while you are staying in Bowral is highly recommended. 4. Bush Walk in Morton National Park – People often associate Bowal with formal gardens and high tea. But there are also beautiful, untouched national parks to impress in this part of the world! If you love bushwalking or hiking, then Wombeyan Caves check out Morton National Park. Remote wilderness, scenic waterfalls, steep gorges, beautiful walking tracks and panoramic lookout points. 5. Wombeyan Caves – These limestone caves are exceptional, and best of all never crowded! A real gem to explore. The highlights are the Wollondilly Cave (plenty of steps but the experience is superb) and the self-guided tour through Fig Tree Cave where the lighting and recorded commentary are automatically activated as you move from chamber to chamber. The businesses and attractions mentioned in this article are independently owned and have no association with Accor Vacation Club. The views expressed are guides only. Vibrant Vietnam If you want a holiday that combines beautiful beaches, rich-river and mountain villages, great food and a fascinating culture and history, then this destination should be at the top of your travel bucket list.

This long, narrow country has a diverse mix of attractions. From Vietnam’s austere and ancient capital of Hanoi in the North to the cosmopolitan cities and beach destinations of the South – the hardest decision for travellers can sometimes be which direction to start! Hanoi is situated on the banks of the Red River, and is a fabulous city to hit the streets and uncover on foot with seemingly endless photo opportunities on hand. Think gorgeous gardens, ancient pagoda and temples, and charming historic buildings that reveal its Frenchcolonial past.

Accor Hotels Select

This city is well regarded for its cuisine – from high end restaurants to street food vendors. Many seasoned travellers suggest joining a food tour as a great way to meet some locals and be introduced to the Vietnese’s food culture, before heading out solo to explore. At the top of our list of more traditional sightseeing options is the Vietnam History Museum, and Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, for a local insight into the influences that have shaped the nation over the centuries. As the financial and business hub of Vietnam, Ho Chi Min City (Saigon) in the South is bustling and brimming with energy. Filled with sleek skyscrapers aside its ancient temples, this city serves up some seriously sexy rooftop bars and an array of high end restaurants that showcase multicultural Vietnam at its best. French, Chinese and local fare make for a delicious combination of flavours and dining options. Despite some similar French colonial architecture to Hanoi in the North in places, it has an entirely different ambiance and is worth spending at least a few days in to understand on a deeper level. From a historical perspective, Ho Chi Min City has had an incredible journey from its first incarnation as a Khmer settlement before the Vietnamese arrived in the 17th century. Later in 1859 it was the French that conquered ‘Saigon’ (as it was then known) which explains the elegant building and boulevards. At the peak of the Vietnam War in 1969, the city had 4.5 million inhabitants who were all evacuated when Saigon and the rest of the South fell to North Vietnamese Forces in 1975. The city has recovered in the 30 years since then, with the current population at over 7 million. It was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, after the

spiritual leader of Vietnamese Communism, but residents were so reluctant to adopt the new name that authorities kept the official name (the city centre is still called Saigon).

beaches make it extremely popular for those wanting a sunny beach break, with the best time to visit between May and August (before it gets too hot).

Beyond the cities, there are some truly stunning coastal resort towns to check out in Vietnam. Nha Trang is a coastal resort city in southern Vietnam known for its beaches, seafood restaurants, diving sites and offshore islands. Aerial cable cars cross over to Hòn Tre Island, and the nature reserves of Hòn Mun and Hòn Tằm islands - easily reached by boat as a day trip - have beautiful coral reefs to explore underwater.

For something special, we recommend Phu Quoc - a Vietnamese island 45 kilometres west of Ha Tie in the far south of the country (which essentially places it just off the coast of Cambodia). Phu Quoc Island boasts idyllic beaches, romantic sunsets, evergreen forests, and a serene atmosphere, making it an ideal holiday destination for travellers looking to escape bustling city life. When the palm lined beaches and blue waters get too much, this place is perfect to take a wildlife safari or cool down with a refreshing rainforest hike.

Da Nang is known as the tourist capital of South Central Vietnam, with a west-coast location that makes for beautiful sunsets against an impressive backdrop of lush mountains. Clear blue seas and pristine

I heard it through the grapevine... Boutique vineyards, big brand names and cellar door experiences. Here is your guide to some of our favourite vineyards across Australia and New Zealand - all easily accessible from the Accor Vacation Club property of your choice.

Wine. For some it is a humble past time, used to celebrate a special occasion or to indulge in some much needed downtime. For others, it is a very serious passion requiring true dedication and years of hands on research! Many a holiday has been designed around the pursuit of good wine, and who are we to argue. Rolling vineyards and cellar door stops make for a bucolic backdrop to any regional escape. Read on for some of our suggestions on where to stop and enjoy a drop on your next Accor Vacation Club adventure.

Hunter Valley NSW The Hunter Valley region of New South Wales is one of Australia’s best and most popular wine regions, with its first vines planted in the early 19th century. Accor Vacation Club’s apartments within the luxurious Grand Mercure The Vintage are ideally located in easy distance to numerous cellar door experiences, making it a great spot to stop and enjoy a drop – or more – in this scenic part of the world. Its accessible location less than 3 and a half hours from Sydney also makes it a truly popular destination for those escaping the rat race for a long weekend, as well as those interstaters heading there for a more substantial break.

Feature Whether you are interested in a formal guided winery tour, or just wandering and exploring at your own pace, the region has a wine experience to suit casual drinkers through to complete connoisseurs. Hunter Valley Semillon is widely considered the iconic wine of the region, but Australian Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and even Verdelho and Gewurztraminer are also popular. There are a range of styles to suit a variety of palates. The list of wineries to visit is also potentially very long. Bimbadgen, McGuigan’s, Peppertree and Brokenwood. Winwood, Waverley and Ivanhoe – plus many more. It may pay to do a little research online before heading out, in order to really target those that appeal based on style, production and preferred varietal. Audrey Wilkinson in Pokolbin is one of the most picturesque wineries you’ll find in this landscape, overlooking the valley. Its fabulous sparkling wines are hard to go past. For the best cellar door experience, Tulloch Wines reigns supreme. The brand is almost a household name in Australia, and the Tulloch family is one of the most famous wine dynasties, with 124 years of winemaking in the Hunter Valley under their belts. Our ‘must try’ pick for region? Petersons. Many an aficionado has recommended this winery’s ‘big Hunter Valley reds’, with their Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz something to behold! Peterson’s is in fact a cellar-door only affair, which essentially means that they are not publicly distributed through retail stores. In fact, the bottles are not even barcoded! So Petersons cellar door and some very exclusive restaurants are the only places you can confidently go to enjoy their wines. For us, this means a visit to this winery is a definite ‘must do’ for anyone touring the Valley and after something special that you can’t easily source once back home. Cellar Door Stops Audrey Wilkinson - 750 De Beyers Rd, Pokolbin Tulloch Wines - 552 Mount View Road, Hunter Valley Petersons - 552 Mount View Road, Hunter Valley Where to Stay

In response to Member feedback, apartments now boast larger bathroom vanities and mirrors, alongside many other modern accessories and furnishings added to each apartment which complete the contemporary look.

Swan Valley WA Abundance. It’s a word that springs to mind when asked about the Swan Valley wines, given it is among the largest sources of Western Australia’s wine. The Swan Valley is indeed the hidden superstar of the Australian wine industry. This prolific region, famous for its Verdelho, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Shiraz varieties, is an easy 16 km drive from the Perth CBD, and has a long history (by Australian standards) of grape growing. Cementing its reputation as a prime vineyard by the 1920s, today, this destination boasts not only world-class wineries but restaurants and wonderful art galleries too. We recommend checking out the 32 kilometre Swan Valley Food & Wine Trail which showcases more than 150 wineries, eateries and microbreweries across this special region. Of course it can be done in small parts, or as an entire experience, depending on how much time you have to wander and enjoy. If a classic winery experience is still your preference, then a stop by Houghton Wines is in order. Established more than 180 years ago it is one of Australia’s oldest operating wineries and has an entertaining and colourful history for those who drop by its cellar door to hear a yarn or two. From brazen bandits to pioneering tales of its Scottish forefathers, it’s fascinating to say the least! Tyler’s Vineyard is a different style of winery focussing on just one style of grape – Grenache – yet creating a diverse range of wines from this single variety. For a lighthearted approach, they also let those visiting their rustic cellar door – which comes complete with barnyard animal friends for the kids to pet – the chance to create and print their very own wine labels on the spot. Ideal for a personalised souvenir or gift for a friend from your holiday. After a Member recommendation? Try the Lancaster Estate rose – a classic summer wine made from old grenache vines, this rose delivers a delightful strawberry nose with soft tannins – perfection! Cellar Door Stops Houghton Wines - 148 Dale Rd, Middle Swan Sandalford - 3210 W Swan Rd, Caversham Tylers Vineyard - 301 Padbury Avenue, Millendon

Where to Stay Managed by Accor Vacation Club, The Sebel Swan Valley is the perfect choice for travellers who want to stay a while and indulge in the best of the Swan Valley at their leisure. A true homeaway-from-home experience, The Sebel is a hop, skip and jump away from some of Western Australia’s finest cellar doors and wineries, not least of all the world-class Houghton’s and venerable Sandalford Wineries, and local fromagerie, the Cheese Factory. Feature Gold Coast Hinterland QLD Wines from the Gold Coast you say? Yes, you heard right! Gold Coast Hinterland wines are in fact one of Queensland’s best kept secrets. Around 45 minutes from most Accor Vacation Club accommodation options on the Gold Coast, the Hinterland cellar doors and micro-breweries are great to explore as a day trip. From the rainforest retreat area that is Mount Tamborine down to Canungra, the Albert River and Scenic Rim, this district offers lower temperatures than one generally associates with the Gold Coast’s summer time surf beach attraction. This cool climate lends itself to producing a diverse range of grape varieties. The result - some surprising premium quality wines to tempt your taste buds. For a taste of Queensland history, Albert River Wines captures the ‘grandeur of the state’s colonial past’. You can join winery staff and amble through the property’s historic homesteads from the 1800’s including Tamborine House. There are also farm yard animals, a sheep station and Keplie dogs to keep you company. Don’t forget to top off your cracking good cellar door stop with a flick of the stock whip! For something more contemporary, small and bold, Witches Falls Winery is hard to drive past. It’s ideal for anyone wanting modern wines with lots of flavour. The ‘Wild Ferment savignon blanc is fermented using indigenous as opposed to commercial yeast on the skins of the grapes and is definitely one to try for its winemaking style alone.

Mercure Gold Coast Resort

Accor Vacation Club Apartments

Where to Stay Accor Vacation Club offers four wonderful Club properties on the Gold Coast for Members to choose from, each offering a different location and experience depending on your preferences for beach, golf and wine time. Check out the Club’s accommodation at Legends Hotel in Surfers Paradise, Turtle Beach Resort at Mermaid Beach, Freshwater Point at Broadbeach, or the Mercure Gold Coast Resort, which is located a little more inland for easy access to the Gold Coast Hinterland.

For a touch of culture, stately Cedar Creek Winery offers its own art gallery - Arthur Hamblin Gallery - featuring beautiful Australian scenes. There is even a purpose built glow worm cave (daily tours are available) making this a wonderful day out for younger members of the family too. But let’s not forget the reason you are here – wine. Cedar Creek serves up a brilliant range of red, white and fortified wines so choosing a colour to sample by the winery’s cosy fireside in winter will be your biggest challenge. Cellar Door Stops Witches Falls Winery - 79 Main Western Road, North Tamborine Cedar Creek Estate - 104-144 Hartley Rd, North Tamborine Albert River Wines - 869 Mundoolun Connection Road, Tamborine WINTER 2019

Ballarat VIC The historical streetscape and gold rush history of Ballarat make for an exciting backdrop to a burgeoning food and wine scene in regional Victoria. Of course, if you have wine on your mind, Accor Vacation Club’s accommodation in Creswick is within easy driving distance to Ballarat, Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges’ with many wineries for those who want to trade spring water for a taste of the red, white and sparkling! The region has a premium wine reputation, with many boutique wineries benefiting from the region’s low temperatures and yields. Popular varietals include pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay and sparkling wines. The 2018 Trip Advisor Excellence Awards, recommend Daylesford Wine Tours as a great way to explore local vineyards, without the need for a designated diver. For traditional cider lovers, check out the Daylesford Cider Company to sample Englishstyle, estate-grown apple brews at their best. Worth a visit in winter, with mulled cider by the fire a perfect way to warm up. In July each year, the Ballarat Winter Festival’s Red Series event is also on, a great showcase of the best in western Victoria’s warming winter wines. Try Eastern Peake Winery in the nearby Pyrenees for premium Pinot Noir in a cool climate inland region, alongside great Chardonnay and Syrah vintages. This winery was also awarded ‘Best Tasting Experience’ at the Best Cellar Doors Australia 2018 awards, so worth a stop! For great local organic wines (and ciders), try Captains Creek, a working farm for more than a century and the original farm of Captain Hepburn of Hepburn Springs fame.

Cellar Door Stops Mount Beckworth Wines - Enoteca at Clunes Eastern Peake Winery - 67 Pickfords Road, Coghills Creek Captains Creek Organic Wines Kangaroo Hills Rd, Blampied Where to Stay For a rural retreat beyond Melbourne, The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort is the perfect place to base yourself and explore the region’s many wineries.

The Sebel Creswick Forest Resort Accor Vacation Club Apartments

Located just out of Ballarat and near gorgeous Daylesford, this Club property is in easy access to a multitude of other great sightseeing too. There is a choice of mountain biking trails, spa culture, golfing, pubs, restaurants and cafes on its doorstep - definitely one to lock in for an escape, no matter what time of year. Of course if you need more incentive to book a stay, then you’re in luck, with the property recently finishing a refresh of its 18 apartments.

Feature The Southern Fleurieu SA World-class wines abound on the Fleurieu Peninsula. This impressive region stretches from the hills in the Mt Lofty Ranges to the ocean, and boasts around 100 cellar doors (from contemporary to boutiques stone crafted wineries) that bear the taste and influence of cool sea breezes. Being one of Australia’s oldest wine-producing regions, the Fleurieu’s most famous and enduring wine regions are perhaps Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale. This is a red grape growing region, best known for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Of course, in more recent times the Southern Fleurieu (think Normanville, Victor Harbour and Port Elliot) are now becoming more prominent with maritime influenced wines on the menu. Lots of sweet cellar doors await in these emerging destinations, test driving relatively newer styles for the region such as medium bodied Merlots, Shiraz Viognier and Pinor Noir varietals. For a lovely little family vineyard serving up a great cabernet, try Allusion Wines – the closest winery to Accor Vacation Club’s apartments at The Links Lady Bay. No. 58 Cellar Door at Port Elliot is another close by yet fabulous experience, on the grounds of historic Waverley Estate. This unique cellar door catches the coastal breezes of Port Elliot, while providing an opportunity to sample the wines of one of the Southern Fleurieu’s best wine producer, Thunderbird. It also features an elegant art gallery promoting work from local and regional creatives. Long tables on the deck outside are ideal to sample their wine, while overlooking the vines. Another small but interesting operation is Mt Jagged Winery, which at 320 metres above sea level features vineyards that slope down the hillside to a large yabby filled dam with views to the Southern Ocean. This vineyard’s rows are planted in an East to West orientation rather than the usual North / South direction due to the prevailing West South West winds, adding to its distinctive offerings. You’ll love this rustic cellar door experience that has been created on the property’s original old dairy site. Cellar Door Stops Mt Jagged Winery – 3191 Victor Harbor Rd, Mount Jagged

New Zealand Forget the Hobbits and rugby. If there is one thing that New Zealand is truly famous for, it has to be its handiwork in creating some of the most sought out wines from the Southern Hemisphere. Ok, a big statement (and a little controversial!), but you have to agree that over the past 25 years, New Zealand has experienced a true wine renaissance from its humble beginnings in the 1830s, and is today regarded worldwide for its sauvignon blanc. Of course New Zealand also produces fine Chardonnays, Gewßrztraminers, Rieslings and Pinots Gris, and while Pinot Noir is the dominant red grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah also do well in different micro-climates. Spoilt for choice you might say. That impressive list of varietals also translates to the number of wineries on offer for visitors to sample. There are now more than 600 working wineries across New Zealand– six times more than were on offer if you were touring the destination back in the 1980s.

Feature About 25 minutes outside of Queenstown is Gibbston Valley Winery which, with three decades of experience on its side, is one of the pioneers of pinot noir vintages in the region. The winery not only offers a tasting room and restaurant but is home to the country’s largest wine cave, which can be explored as a tour. Gibbston Valley also hosts a summer concert series, and features its own bike centre for access to some of the top trails in Queenstown including the Arrow River Trail, Gibbston River Trail and Rabbit Ridge Bike Resort.

Oakridge Resort Wanaka

Accor Vacation Club Apartments

Central Otago is a tourism stronghold, captivating visitors with a wide range of excellent cellar door facilities and winetourism activities. Did we mention it’s also unimaginably stunning? In this part of the world, soaring mountain peaks meet glacial lakes and plunging gorges, for a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Although quite a modest area, six subregions exist in this wine zone, including Wanaka, Gibbston and Bannockburn. Each region produces distinct wines that reflect the unique climate, aspect, terrain and altitude of this zone. The cold climate and glacial soil contributes to producing elegant pinot noirs, for which the region is now famous. Rippon Winery in the Wanaka region is great to stop by for an informal experience with the Southern Alps and Lake Wanaka as your backdrop. For a more intimate or detailed experience, a private tasting can be arranged on request too. Bookings are essential, but are worth it for a dedicated 45 minutes to an hour with your own personal host who will talk you thoroughly through the land, people and wines of Rippon. 6-8 wines will be tasted, often mini-verticals of Pinot Noir or Riesling.

On the North Island, a visit to Mercury Bay Estate is a must do. This boutique winery and restaurant is located at Cooks Beach over-looking beautiful Mercury Bay, and is less than 50 minutes-drive from Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort. The winery – which has a focus on sustainability - was recently voted as one of the top 10 experiences for visitors to the Coromandel Peninsula. Cellar Door Stops Gibbston Valley Winery – 1820 State Highway 6, Gibbston Rippon - 246 Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Rd, Wanaka Mercury Bay Estate, Coromandel Peninsula - 761a Purangi Road Cooks Beach, Whitianga Where to stay Accor Vacation Club offers three great properties in New Zealand for Members. Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort on the North Island is an iconic favourite, offering a tranquil treetop location within easy access to the many beaches, hikes and drives of Pauanui and the Coromandel Peninsula. On the South Island in the premium Otago winemaking region, Members have a choice of two Club properties. Accor Vacation Club’s apartments at the MGallery Hotel St Moritz in Queenstown overlooks Lake Wakatipu, while the Oakridge Resort in Wanaka also makes a great base with hot springs close by and majestic mountain views for days.

Margaret River WA A two minute hop, step and jump away from one of Accor Vacation Club’s favourite addresses – Grand Mercure Basildene Manor - is the township of Margaret River. A seriously stunning destination famous for its decadent food and produce, and serious wine industry. It’s equally famous of course for its spectacular surfing beaches and natural attractions, while offering stunning walking and cycling tracks that hug the river line. For those who love the great outdoors, these tracks offer a brilliant opportunity to explore ancient forests and vistas of vineyards along the way. Wine-lovers will vouch for the regions award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon vintages, crafted by some 200 vineyards that call the area home. Leeuwin Estate is one of the five founding wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Guests are welcomed daily to enjoy wine tastings, view the contemporary collection of Australian art in the Art Gallery, join a behind-the-scenes tour, and dine on seasonal produce in the award-winning restaurant. Cape Mentelle is another iconic wine brand that hails from this region, in the spotlight for 2019. According to James Halliday, author of the 2019 Australian Wine Companion, “Cape Mentelle is firing on all cylinders, with the winemaking team fully capitalising on the extensive and largely mature vineyards, which obviate the need for contract-grown fruit. Cape Mentelle is one of those knocking on the door of the Winery of the Year Award.” Definitely one to check out this year! For something close by Grand Mercure Basildene Manor, check out small family run winery, Preveli. The wines from Preveli are grown from their 28 acre vineyard in nearby Rosabrook, surrounded by oceans on three sides of its Capes which makes for ideal ripening conditions. However, there is a handy cellar door just ten minutes-drive away in the town of Prevelley, which also offers exceptional surf and dramatic limestone caves (so well worth a visit in itself).

Cellar Door Stops Leeuwin Estate – Stevens Road, Margaret River Cape Mentelle Vineyards - 331 Wallcliffe Rd, Margaret River Preveli Wines - 99 Mitchell Dr, Gnarabup Where to Stay Look no further than our very own Grand Mercure Basildene Manor. Serving up a great dose of old world charm aside contemporary comforts and luxurious surrounds, it’s little wonder that Grand Mercure Basildene Manor was voted an impressive #12 out of 24 top hotels recognised in the ‘Top Hotels for Romance – Australia’ category. With so many great wineries and beaches close by for sunset strolls, who would be surprised! Of course, the hotel is a destination appeals to lovers of life and great travels generally, with Basildene also ranking #1 out of 10 properties located in Margaret River, Western Australia, in TripAdvisor’s annual Travelers’ Choice™ awards* for Hotels. In 2018, travellers’ awarded a further ‘Certificate of Excellence’ for consistently earning great guest reviews, making for an impressive hat trick of accolades earned in 2018. All worthy reasons to add this hotel to your accommodation bucket list on your next visit to Western Australia. The Sebel Busselton is also a great base to explore the great wines of the South West region of Western Australia, a 40 minute drive from some of the state’s best wineries and cellar doors.

Cellar Door Stops

Located just 1.5 hours drive from Sydney, the Southern Highlands is perfect for a cool change and the chance to sample some cool climate wines.

Artemis Wines - 46 Sir Charles Moses Ln, Mittagong

Centennial Wines has vineyards both in Borwal and Orange, but of course the cellar door located in Bowral is ever so handy for those guests staying at The Sebel in town. Many of Centennial’s wines are from a “single vineyard” reflecting those unique characters and balance that cannot be made from any other site – we highly recommend trying the Chardonnay from the Bowral vineyard.

Iconic World Rail Journeys By Jacqueline Hamilton

Rail enthusiasts and historians alike are going to love this article about their favourite mode of transport. Even travellers who are looking for a gentler way to travel to amazing destinations should be attracted to the world’s best train journeys. Let’s explore rail journeys from the high-speed Bullet Train of Japan to the romance of the legendary Orient Express. From the clank of the Glacier Express climbing high into Switzerland’s snowy peaks, to the longest and best rail journeys onboard Russia’s Trans-Siberian. Don not forget Australia’s spectacular Ghan railroad, traversing the desert outback from north to south Australia, or the ultra-luxurious Blue Train showcasing South Africa’s wide-open plains. Cross the untamed wilderness of the Rocky Mountains with the worldfamous Rocky Mountaineer, or maybe explore Peru’s panoramic views of the Andes, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu as you climb onboard Hiram Bingham Express. We know there are additional iconic trains, however this list gives us a good start on visiting the world’s most interesting destinations, relaxing and enjoying the ride. It’s all aboard for adventure with our top 8 World Rail Journeys!

TRAVEL

Bullet Train, Japan Get ready for excitement as you climb onboard the “Shinkansen” or high-speed bullet trains that connect Tokyo to most of Japans main towns and cities. Similar to an airplane, you can choose from economy, business, and first-class style seating as you are whisked along to destinations throughout Honshu, Kyushu and Hokkaido. The rail lines can take you to see the stunning Mount Fuji rising out of the flat landscape (for the best views, make sure you sit on the left if you are heading away from Tokyo, the right if heading towards). You can also see Japan’s largest lake – Lake Biwa, beautiful and historic Kyoto, the art installations of Shikoku, and the snowfields of Hokkaido Delicate cherry blossoms in spring between Nagoya and Tokyo, are a must see as are the spectacular seascapes along the Kyushu line. Each are picture perfect and ready right now!

Simplon Orient Express, Europe The Venice-Simplon Orient Express epitomises the elegant decadence and romantic rail journeys of yesteryear. Step onboard its super-luxurious, vintage restored carriages, ornately designed and serviced by white gloved attendants. This train is ready to exceed your expectations! From personalised service, exceptional cuisine, lively bar and lounge carriages, through to the comfortable private cabins and sleeping cars. You will be hard pressed to want more. Vibrant historic cities, hilltop fortresses, delightful villages, grapeladen vineyards, spectacular Alpine landscapes, rivers, lakes and canals all await as you set off from London or Paris across Europe, to Venice and Rome, Budapest, Prague, Bucharest, Istanbul and beyond. This is a signature journey like no other and a visual and sensory experience to leave memories for a lifetime.

“91 tunnels and more than 290 bridges”

Glacier Express, Switzerland Clank, clank, clank… this is the world’s slowest “express” train across the Alps that is going to delight you as you join this unique engineering challenge taking you through 91 tunnels and more than 290 bridges. Champagne and amuse-bouche are served as spectacular scenery slips by through picture windows between St. Moritz and Zermatt. Follow this up with a 5-course meal and you are onboard one of the most majestic trains in the world. Sights that will astound you include the famous Matterhorn from an almost 4000m vantage point, the Rhine Gorge and Lake Sils. Check out the paradise for skiers - Corvatsch and the beautiful St. Moritz with all its celebrity visitors. Let me just say that the sun rising or setting over the Alps is one that you’ll never forget!

Trans-Siberian Railway, Russia This bucket-list journey is legendary. One of the longest journeys in the world, the Trans-Siberian Railway will take you deep into the heart of Russia – from Moscow over the Ural Mountains into Siberia and the Russian Far East, and further into Northern Mongolia and China via the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-China extensions. Travelling over 9000 kilometres, this primarily domestic line will see you deeply immersed into Russian culture. Charming villages, soaring mountains, and the beautiful and stark Siberian tundra. Highlights include Yekaterinburg, Irkutz, Lake Baikal, Ulaan Baatar, The Great Wall of China, and more. Climb onboard for the adventure of the lifetime!

TRAVEL Ghan, Australia Take a very personal journey through the outback onboard the Ghan as you travel from north to south touching base in Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs, and Adelaide. Onboard, you’ll discover elegant and sophisticated dining, charming private cabins, friendly service, and the camaraderie of your fellow travellers (usually meeting up in the lounge carriage for fun and drinkies along the way!). Your adventure into the outback gives you a unique perspective on our wide brown land – yet it’s so much more. From vibrant iron reds of the cliffs, brilliant grassy greens, striking blues of the sky to the ghostly greys of the gum trees and cool deep hidden waterholes ready to be explored. The Ghan will showcase Australia’s cavalcade of colour, that’s just ripe for discovery.

Blue Train, South Africa If you want a 5-star experience, then the Blue Train is for you. You will be joining the likes of royalty, presidents and celebs who have all travelled before you on a 1600 kilometre scenic affair. Starting from coastal Cape Town, you’ll travel inland to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bulawayo and beyond to the magnificent destination of thundering Victoria Falls – you’ll enjoy the royal treatment all the way. The Blue Train’s luxe amenities are on par with most luxury hotels, from her exquisite dining car studded with the world’s best chefs, to the opulent and ornate lounge cars, observation decks and lavish club cars. Meanwhile, its picture windows will give you a clear view out to the wildlife laden plains of Africa. Plus, safari, lodges, and longer stays in Kruger National Park, Victoria Falls (and any other stop that takes your fancy) can easily be arranged – all you need to do is ask! 10 DaYs

Where in the Wild World would you see By Jacqueline Hamilton

Some of the best experiences in the world come from the wild. Imagine it! Spotting river dolphins whilst you’re trekking in the Amazon rainforest or watching polar bears galumphing along an iceberg from the comfort of you’re Arctic expedition cruise ship… or maybe your headed for a safari in a 4x4 through sprawling savannah landscapes, and suddenly…you spot some wild, wild, wildlife!

In this tale, cruising will meet creatures, as we list the unique animals (and where in the wild world you can actually find them)… to make incredible memories, and take spectacular photographs. Get your camera ready! Let’s begin! Now, where in the wild world would you see…

TRAVEL Puffins and Penguins - North or South you choose! Okay, let’s first face the facts – while they may look like they’re cousins, penguins and puffins are completely different species. The clearest distinction? The ability of flight. Sadly, penguins can’t fly. So why do they have wings? Well, technically they have a pair of rigid flippers that just look like wings. And they weigh anywhere from the little Blue Fairy Penguins 1kg up to a massive 23kg of an Emperor Penguin. Wouldn’t want one of those to come down on your head! On the other hand, a puffin has feathered wings just right for flying, and is much lighter in weight (around half a kilo), allowing them to fly. Additionally, they aren’t even neighbours! Puffins can be found mostly near Iceland and in the upper 13 DaYs

A Taste of Ireland and Norway

Northern Hemisphere, so you could easily spot one during an Arctic cruise expedition. Meanwhile, their chubbier penguin friends can be found down on the other side of the world, in the Southern Hemisphere, scattered all across Antarctica and southern-most locations in South America, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. For the adventurous traveller, Accor Vacation Club Travel has a wide selection of expeditions heading North to the spectacular glaciers and fjords of the Arctic and south to Antarctica and beyond… just don’t confuse them from one another!

Bears, Bears and More Bears! Whether it’s the imposing, black bear, or the mighty grizzly, one of the most accessible places you’ll find these great animals is in British Columbia, Canada and nearby Alaska - considered by many a traveller to be the best place to spot them. Although usually quite shy of humans, they’re so numerous here that you could see them wandering along the side of the road, if you’re lucky!

clank of the “thethe most accessible Glacier places you’ll Express find these climbing high into great animals” Switzerland’s snowy peaks

While they may be solitary animals, bears can be found in groups feeding together where food is abundant – and this would be a great opportunity to take out your camera! The great salmon runs prevalent throughout Canada and the Alaskan coastal regions make this an ideal time to get onboard an Inside Passage Alaskan cruise or delve further inland, into well forested areas to see bears in their natural habitats. We suggest the Rocky Mountaineer Rail journey for an indepth wilderness discovery of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. For an unhurried and hassle-free viewing experience, many cruises will offer excursions into Denali National Park, with overnight stays in various lodges located in the heart of the Alaska’s wilderness. Be patient, enjoy the natural surrounding environment, fresh mountain air and keep your eyes peeled for moose, caribou, bald eagles and more while you are waiting for your elusive bear. Just a sneaky hint – on Vancouver Island near Vancouver you can see bears via Zodiac, as you traverse through small bays and shores, subalpine meadows, and rocky rivers. Galapagos Giant Tortoise Living among the harsh, desert-like conditions of the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, are their trademark and extremely rare giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions and many colourful sea birds including the Blue-footed Booby.

For the tortoise most of the day (and night) is spent sleeping, only waking for food (cactus, native fruits and grasses) or to move into the shade of a bush or wallow in a mud pool. They have been known to “rest” for weeks at a time and have an incredible ability to survive without food or water for over a year! The island’s remoteness is an evolutionary breeding ground and living laboratory for scientists, naturalists and passionate travellers alike. They were brought almost to extinction by over 200 years of exploitation by seafarers who stacked the animals on deck to provide fresh meat and water on longer voyages. With more visitors to this fragile environment came further exploitation and challenges from transported rats, pigs and disease.

TRAVEL

Current conservation and National Park status of the Galapagos has brought many species back from the brink of extinction, not least due to the tortoise’s incredible longevity. We know of Harriet, a Galapagos tortoise collected by Charles Darwin during his famous 1835 voyage. In 1860 she was eventually brought to the zoo at Brisbane Botanic Gardens in Australia by the HMS Beagle’s Captain John Wickham. Harriet was thought to have lived for over 175 years! Another well-known tortoise was the 250-year-old Adwaita, a Giant Tortoise that was given to Clive of India in 1750. Adwaita was found on the small remote island of Aldabra in the Indian Ocean, which is the only other place you are likely to find giant land tortoise. Explorers can witness these magnificent creatures for themselves on an exclusive journey to the Galapagos Islands – a perfect addition to any South American holiday.

Platypus - a what? Is it a duck? An otter? A beaver? A swimming-duck-fish-beaver-otter-bird? This is arguably the weirdest animal on this list and there’s no denying the curious attraction of the platypus. This unique, egg-laying mammal is part duck with its bill, part beaver with its tail, and part otter with its webbed feet, plus its mammalian body all goes to make up one very strange (yet cute) hodgepodge of an animal! Wanna see one? Head down to good old Oz! You may not be lucky enough to see one in the wild though, because the very shy platypus spends a lot of time underwater or in their burrows. The best place to view them is at Sydney’s world-famous Taronga Zoo, or head south to Victoria’s Healesville Sanctuary for a world’s first experience where you can get up close and personal with a platypus and learn all about their environment. Pink River Dolphins - adventure awaits! Do you like dolphins? What about a little adventure? Combine the two with a visit to the Amazon Rainforest to explore, obviously, yet also to spy on one of two world species of river dolphins. And they are pink! Yes. You read that right. It’s a dolphin and it’s pink. But are they born this way? Not quite. These dolphins actually have a typical grey sheen that slowly turns pink as they age. The pink colour can also be attributed to their capillaries being so close to their skins. Adorable? You bet. Plus, if the dolphin likes you, it can even blush! These dolphins can be found in the Amazon’s tributaries, slow moving river basins, streams and lakes, thus we recommend an Amazon River Excursion to visit not only these cute creatures, but to experience the epic river in all its bountiful glory. 19 DAYs
