Tired of Berlin’s shabby chic and in the mood to really dress up like a film star? Then this is the place you should go to. In this huge (750 m²) concept store on the very touristy but oh so beautiful Gendarmenmarkt, you’ll find international luxury fashion brands like Louboutin or Hermès but also design furniture, perfumes and jewellery. There’s also a Corner in Charlottenburg and a smaller one in Mitte. Oukan stands for Japanese and international avant-garde fashion. Be prepared for lots of black and a little bit of white. Scheduled to re-open in an old Berliner ballroom in Autumn of 2016 where they will also host a Dessert Bar. Hip, beautiful, expensive and often unique.

This furniture shop takes upcycling and recycling to another level. Old doors are turned into lockers, old floors into tables. It’s all very beautiful, ecological, one-of-a-kind and soulful. Ulf and Katia Geyersbach have a passion for old pinewood that they mainly salvage from old abandoned buildings. Siebensachen is the baby of Adam+Harborth. Both these product designers design games, musical boxes and other items under their own names, but they also work for various international brands. Their designs are timeless with a twist, and made out of carefully selected materials. Everything in this former post office is selected with the greatest care and style. One of the owners, Oliver, makes closed jar mini-gardens that add even more character to the space. The spacey and airy restaurant serves an excellent lunch that changes every day. And then there’s the lovely inside courtyard.

5 unusual venues with a LAKE OR RIVER VIEW

The view from this beach on the Müggelsee is simply amazing. Dive from the broad wooden pier that leads out into the lake and swim back to the beach to sip a margarita in one of the many deck chairs. There’s a rental service with various boats and rafts. This crane house, situated in a postGDR industrial area, was built in 1967. Architect Ana Gruden did a wonderful job in transforming the living area above the café, as well as the actual bar below, which is also an events/exhibition space. The view on the river is simply stunning. This former boathouse has a genuine maritime feeling to it. The decor is kitschy and cosy and the restaurant and bar is perched over the Spree River canal near the open-air Türkenmarkt. The sundown on both of the patios is beautiful.

464 YAAM An Der Schillingbrücke 3 Friedrichshain +49 (0)30 6151 354 www.yaam.de

465 FREISCHWIMMER Vor dem Schlesischen Tor 2-A Friedrichshain +49 (0)30 6107 4309 www.freischwimmerberlin.com/

Yaam (short for the Young and African Arts Market) is a bit of an atypical beach club. It’s a club, a beach bar (one of the oldest in Berlin) and a concert venue (focusing on reggae and world music) as well. It’s the perfect multi-culti chill-out location. This former boot rental with repair shop was transformed into a hip restaurant. It offers a fantastic view on the water and on the Arena buildings on the other side of the river. Despite the fact that it isn’t easy to find (a tip: it’s just 100 metres behind the ARAL gas station), it’s very popular. It’s the perfect location for a Sunday brunch!
