Bar Nine in Culver City is a coffee shop and roaster that is all about simplicity and sustainability. Simplicity—as the sole focus is on the best coffees in season, and a simple and clean design of the interior space. Sustainability— from reuse of an old warehouse, reclaimed barn wood from the Midwest, glassware rather than disposable cups, solar power rather than the grid, and compostable packaging.

Bar Nine is located on the edge of Hayden Tract, a former industrial area that has become an enclave of architecturally significant buildings. Real estate developers Frederick and Laurie Samitaur Smith have worked with local architect Eric Owen Moss to remake low-rise manufacturing buildings and warehouses into office space for advertising, design, and media companies. The contemporary buildings feature curves, sharp angles, twists, concrete, glass, steel, and exposed structural elements. The buildings are named for their shapes, such as Slash, Backslash, Beehive, Box, Slice, Stealth, Umbrella, and Waffle.

Frederick Smith and Eric Owen Moss discovered a mutual interest in the poem Four Quartets by T.S. Eliot when they first met in 1988, providing the foundation for a decadeslong relationship. The poem begins: Time present and time past – Are both perhaps present in time future – And time future contained in time past. The poem ends: We shall not cease from exploration – And the end of all our exploring – Will be to arrive where we started – And know the place for the first time.

BLUE BOTTLE COFFEE (ARTS DISTRICT) Photography: Jose A. Sanchez
Occupying the former space of Handsome Coffee, the Arts District outlet of the Blue Bottle Coffee and roaster was designed and constructed by WoodSmithe (Los Angeles). The general design features original wooden trusses, extensive glass, and natural daytime lighting. The interior utilizes natural and simple materials including copper on the ceiling panels, concrete floors, granite counter tops, white oak tables and chairs, and wood subway tiles that have been milled from maple, aged with vinegar wash, and glued directly to the drywall—resulting in a very clean, modern, and open space.

The Arts District in Los Angeles is located on the eastern side of downtown. The northern part of the district was a vineyard in the mid-1800s, but citrus groves (oranges and grapefruit) replaced the vineyard in the late-1800s. Though small independent manufacturing had taken over by WWII, many of these manufacturers failed or moved over the following two decades, resulting in an increasing number of vacant buildings. Artists began moving into the empty buildings during the 1960s and 1970s for their working studios and living quarters.

Coffee Culture
hot coffee + cool spaces Robert Schneider Coffee Culture: hot coffee + cool spaces is a full-color presentation of coffee shops crafting great coffee in interesting spaces with good design aesthetics. The author has selected thirty-three coffee shops located in cities across the United States, including Ann Arbor, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Seattle. Photography by an eclectic group of photographers captures the feel and personality of each coffee shop. The concept of space is often extended
from the shop interior to the neighborhood—interweaving coffee, art, architecture, design, and historic preservation. The book showcases coffee shops located in historic buildings, modern architecture, an art museum, an arcade, a courtyard, a former loading dock and even a reclaimed cargo shipping container—but the common thread is an appreciation for great coffee in spaces that invite human interaction and create memories through good design.
