Winner of ‘The World’s Best Design Restaurant’ in 2013, Höst is Copenhagen’s most accessible New Nordic dining experience. With it’s everevolving seasonal menu, Höst offers up course after course of locally sourced, quirky, and delicious food you won’t find anywhere else. Tip: book ahead online.

RELÆ

PONY Vesterbrogade 135 Copenhagen V ➂ +45 3322 1000 www.ponykbh.dk

Located on one of the hippest streets in Copenhagen, Relæ never announces their ‘menu of the day’ early, you just have to show up to find out what’s for dinner. Four-course dinner for 450 kroner (without wine). This chic neighbourhood bistro is the casual ‘little brother’ of the exclusive Michelin-starred restaurant Kadeau. The menu still offers a fantastic selection of New Nordic cuisine inspired, in large part, by the produce coming from the Danish island of Bornholm. Expect dinner and wine for around 300 kroner.

Opened by Noma co-founder Claus Meyer, Radio serves exquisite five-course dinners for around 400 kroner. The focus is on sustainably grown, organic vegetables sourced from their own farms. Another spinoff from a Noma veteran, the extraordinary Amass Restaurant is led by American chef and owner Matt Orlando. Best reached by a city water bus, Amass is located in a reclaimed industrial facility. The six-course dinner menu (without wine) is 600 kroner.

5 CLASSIC DANISH dishes worth trying

6

7

SMØRREBRØD

FLØDEBOLLER

Translated literally as ‘butter bread,’ 'smørrebrød' is a broad term referring to a wide spectrum of Danish open-faced sandwiches served on dark, dense rye bread. Smørrebrød is typically topped with some combination of cold meats, fish, vegetables, cheese, and, of course, butter. You can find specialty shops all over the city that prepare fresh smørrebrød daily.

8

GAMMEL DANSK

Made from a secret recipe of 29 herbs, spices, and flowers, Gammel Dansk is a pungent spirit often enjoyed on special occasions. Love it or hate it, but taste it at least once.

9

DANISH HOT DOG

Wrapped in bacon, topped with fried onions, sweet pickles, and your choice of sweet ketchup or spicy mustard, this is the ultimate Copenhagen street food. Look for pølsevogns (sausage wagons) throughout the capital.

10

FLÆSKESTEG

A slow roasted pork roast served with crispy pork cracklings, warm pickled red cabbage, and caramelized potatoes, flæskesteg is the classic Danish comfort food.

Dark chocolate, marzipan, marshmallow cream – what’s not to love? These classic Danish sweets are often served on top of ice cream, but are also delicious on their own. The best can be found in Copenhagen’s many chocolate shops or artisanal bakeries.
