Furniture and decoration in black complement the concrete floors and plywood walls.
A Home Made of Plywood and Concrete
Maija and Sami’s house is located in a peaceful family neighborhood in Espoo. They found the lot online while looking for a larger home for themselves and their three children. However, the property has a challenging shape, as it is located on a steep hillside. “We had a very clear vision of the house, its layout as well as materials. We wanted to get a functional house for our family in which we would have just the right sized spaces designed for our needs,” Maija explains.
At first, the couple dreamed of leaving all inside surfaces uncoated, but they eventually decided on plywood and coated concrete to achieve a timeless look. Maija and Sami are especially happy with their decision to have a paneled indoor ceiling, an idea they got from a housing fair, where a group of students from Aalto University had done just that with their cottage.
“The floors of the house are cast from concrete with the exception of the humid spaces, for which I myself made the floor surfaces with micro cement. I think the cut cement was the most successful choice of flooring, and I also enjoy its color. The floor is easy to take care of and timeless. We did not want to have tiles in our home,
and all the surfaces in our humid facilities are coated with micro cement,” Sami says.
“We spent most of our time upstairs in the big relaxing space where we have the kitchen, the dining space and the living room with its stoves,” Maija states. The matte black kitchen cupboards are pretty easy to take care of and go well with the plywood walls. The window frames are wood-colored inside and out. There is also black painted structural steelwork sustaining the windows.”
This home is decorated with timeless pieces of furniture, all of which are from the family’s previous homes with the exception of the couch. Scandinavian design inspires both Maija and Sami. Many of the pieces of furniture are from Artek.
Two large terraces with comfortable couches, dining spaces and even a drop pool have been added to the house and make the most of the location on the hillside.
“The terrace upstairs is really big, and with that much space, we had the opportunity to create both a dining space and a relaxing space,” says Sami.
From the living room and dining space, there is an unobstructed view of the yard through the big windows.
Maija purchased an old rocking chair from the antiques store Vanhaisäntä Igor; apparently, the chair had been returned to the store many times due to its long runners—it felt as if the chair would curl around.

Vintage furniture upholstered in leather is a sound sustainable choice. The leather craft of a quality item is apparent in the quality of the hide, the stitch and piping detail. These items are made to last. For walls, salvaged suede and leather can look beautiful, adding softness to any dressing room.
Glass sliding doors and large panels of automated curtains can be used to separate the spaces and create more social or more private moments. Guto’s own design studio created several pieces of parametric furniture and art for the apartment.
