In the heart of historic Paris on the Ile de la Cité, Paul has the perfect location on the beautiful Place Dauphine, where memories of Simone Signoret and Yves Montand linger on. Behind its low door, the delightfully old-fashioned Parisian bistro welcomes guests into impeccable surroundings: immaculate tablecloths, elegant vermillion-red banquettes, slightly faded murals, dark wood panelling, all supported by service of the highest quality. Frequented mostly by men from the Quai des Orfèvres at lunchtime, the restaurant also lends itself to romantic dinners come nightfall. You may even bump into celebrities who have come to dine incognito in this charming hideaway. The menu offers high-quality French cuisine – œufs mayonnaise, andouillette, or even blanquette de veau à l’ancienne – simple dishes steeped in tradition, served in quiet, comfortable surroundings. Against the backdrop of the restaurant’s Parisian retro decor, Woody Allen was able to shoot one of the most romantic night-time scenes of his film. The bistro also hosted the TV mini-series The Blue Bicycle with the divine Lætitia Casta.

It is impossible to miss this anachronistic bistro and its pink neon sign at the intersection of the busy rues Dénoyer and de Belleville. Inside, multi-coloured neon lights on the ceiling flirt with kitsch formica tables beneath the amused gaze of the huge zinc bar and posts covered with sheet music by Lucienne Delyle and Tino Rossi. Because even today, bathed in graffiti, the bar unapologetically pays homage to its heyday as a café-théâtre, when it was frequented by such greats as Edith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier. Its neighborhood vibe is palpable in the friendly hubbub and the more heated discussions at the bar. Customers enter and leave amidst a frenzied hustle and bustle, the more indolent among them settling in on the terrace to enjoy the hectic activity of the quartier. The clientele is eclectic: barflies, punters and tourists come to Aux Folies for its unique atmosphere and modest prices. You have to pay cash here: they take neither cheques nor credit cards. Cédric Klapisch filmed Mélanie Laurent in the large windows of this bistro to allow her professor Fabrice Luchini a glimpse into his young student’s life, in all its transparency.

Especially sought after on fine days for its large terrace ideally situated on the Place Saint-Sulpice, the Café de la Mairie has all the glitz of a popular neighbourhood bistro. Intellectuals, artists and pretty young women exhausted at the end of an afternoon’s shopping come here to enjoy a quiet moment, the only sound being the bells from the neighbouring parish. The simple menu doesn’t detract from the place’s Parisian charm. It’s hardly surprising that Fabrice Luchini was a regular here in The Discreet.

Paul Bettany comes to search for the keystone

The church of Saint-Sulpice is dedicated to Sulpitius the Pious, the Bishop of Bourges in the seventh century. Its construction from 1660 to 1870 explains its unique style. Visits of the interior are made in silence out of respect for worshippers for, in addition to religious services, the Chapel of the Virgin, the pulpit of the central nave and the frescos by Delacroix also offer an incredible wealth of art. In order to accommodate the totally fictitious ‘history’ behind the plot of The Da Vinci Code, the interior of Saint-Sulpice was completely replicated in a studio.

Le Verre à Pied has established itself as an invaluable, providential place to stop on the bustling rue Mouffetard. This old-fashioned bistro welcomes its customers unaffectedly with sincere smiles that are lit up by a timeless decor, which gives it a delightfully Bohemian ambiance. During the day, students, local shopkeepers, artists and retired teachers sit down to have a drink and talk, stimulated by the friendly atmosphere. Regulars also meet up for literary evenings or to view the latest exhibits displayed on the walls, which fuel fevered debates. Sightseers will find a typically French bistro with an antique cast-iron stove, quaint tiles and old burnished wooden chairs and tables, the perfect setting to enjoy homemade, traditional, well-priced food and an excellent glass of wine. This charming, authentic place led Jean-Pierre Jeunet to abandon Montmartre for one scene in favour of the Left Bank. The director set up his cameras at Le Verre à Pied for two days to film a few unforgettable, emotional minutes.
