GERMANY Portrait of a fascinating country
Germany Portrait of a fascinating country
Faith has inspired the most imposing palaces. And where faith is particularly profound, as in the strictly Catholic Rhineland, the palaces are especially splendid – here the Basilica of St Mary in Kevelaer.
6 | GERMANY
One of the most attractive legacies of the Romanesque style in Germany is Maria Laach Abbey, in the north of the Rhineland Palatinate. It shows how simplicity and beauty can combine in magnificent harmony.

ZU DIESEM BUCH
Emperors and kings took their breaks at the seaside, and in their wake followed not only rich and beautiful commoners, but also painters, poets and most of all bon-vivants.
With this book, however, you can at least marvel and dream of Germany’s grandeur and diversity. This photographic volume takes its readers on a voyage
into the country’s every nook and cranny, encountering fantastic sights all along the way – wild, untouched landscapes that have resisted all human intervention;
magnificent towns and cities that have been turned into veritable treasure chests by historical events; and remote and enchanted areas, so much at peace within
themselves that you would want to make your way there straightaway. All this you will find in this book’s pages: a country of marvels, like a fantastic goodie bag.

Monasteries have always been places of the faith and the spirit. This is why they were often equipped with grand libraries – one of the most amazing can be found in the Lower Bavarian Benedictine Abbey of Metten.

HAMBURG, HAFENCITY
The name may be humble, but the project is immense: Unfolding right in the heart of Hamburg, just half a mile from the town hall and Binnenalster lake, is one of the largest urban development projects ever undertaken in a major European city. An entire district, with homes for 12,000 people and 40,000 workplaces, is being constructed over

an area spanning 2.2 sq km (0.8 sq miles), which was once part of the freeport, and is completely surrounded by rivers and canals. This has meant demolishing almost all existing structures, apart from a few heritage-listed buildings. The new HafenCity will bear no trace of the area’s history as Hamburg’s execution site, which witnessed the
deaths of famous delinquents like the pirate Klaus Störtebeker and his Victual Brothers, and will instead see resident numbers and space in the heart of Hamburg virtually double. Ensuring that no traditions are betrayed, however, the HafenCity’s architecture, for all its concrete, also pays tribute to northern Germany’s love affair with red brick.
BRAUNSCHWEIG
What remained is little more than a distant memory – and of course the town’s proud emblematic animal, the bronze lion, erected by Henry in 1166 in front of the cathedral as a symbol of his fighting courage.
Sometimes you can find tasty local delicacies as well as plenty of history. One of the typical pastries in Braunschweig is “Ulen un Apen”, or owls and monkeys in local di-
alect; this goes back to the arch trickster Till Eulenspiegel, who was born not far from Braunschweig and who plied his mischievous tricks as a journeyman baker in
Braunschweig, the town of Henry the Lion. Equally famous is the asparagus which is cultivated in the sandy soils of the environs. Nor do Braunschweiger smoked sausages
have to hide behind the likes of frankfurters or Nuremberg sausages; having enjoyed an international following, they denote a type of liverwurst in the United States.

WOLFENBÜTTEL
Giacomo Casanova had much more on his mind than women’s skirts. In June 1764, he came to Wolfenbüttel where he translated Homer’s “Iliad” in the library. Af-

terwards he noted: “I lived there completely happy, didn’t think either of the past or the future, and my spirit, which was totally sunk into my work, didn’t realize the pres-
ent.” Casanova was certainly not the only one who found happiness in the Herzog August Library. Voltaire and the Humboldt brothers, Georg Forster and Goethe were
all inspired by this unique collection of books. Goethe felt that “being in a library is like being in the presence of a large capital that generates incalculable interests”.
WISMAR
Since reunification, Wismar has once again been proudly bearing the title of Hanseatic City in its name – and rightly so, for it owes its fame and wealth to the Hanseatic League.
Anyone visiting the proud cities on the Baltic Sea coast today will notice a recurring contradiction: the unique discrepancy between dazzling magnificence and relative insignificance. These cities are, in fact, much too small for all their mighty churches, grand homes, sprawling marketplaces and palatial office buildings. Wismar is the perfect ex-
ample of such a place; a treasure chest of gabled brick structures and stunning religious sites like St Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche, left), but which also moves at a very leisurely pace. History provides the key to explaining these contradictions in the form of a single institution: the Hanseatic League, which saw Wismar and many other northern cities
turn into prosperous centres of trade very early on, showcasing their wealth through impressive buildings. Wismar joined the Hanseatic League in 1259 and instantly became one of its most important cities, before the passing of the centuries sent it into a slumber, from which it still does not seem to have fully woken.

ROSTOCK AND WARNEMÜNDE
Rostock and its Warnemünde district can boast a number of attractions – from splendid Hanseatic brick buildings, to magnificent churches like the threenaved St Mary’s Basilica (St. Marien, 13th to 16th century), to lakeside esplanades, spa resorts and lighthouses. But one attraction outdoes them all: Hotel Neptun, the most famous and also most

notorious hotel in the former East Germany, which still soars eighteen floors up over Warnemünde’s beach. It was nicknamed the “Stasi Hotel” because of the many visitors from the West who would come and stay here to do largely legal business with the GDR big shots, and be indulged by the fair maidens of socialism, while being reliably filmed by the secret
police. The “minister-president” (premier) of Schleswig-Holstein, Uwe Barschel, was a regular guest here, and the infamous GDR currency maestro SchalckGolodkowski even had his own personal suite. Today, by contrast, visitors can stroll along the beachside promenade and take a break at “Schusters Strandbar” (left).

tane in his “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” (“Ramblings through the Margraviate of Brandenburg”) 120 years ago remains as convincing and relevant
as ever. For the Uckermark north of Berlin in particular is one of the most distinct, authentic landscapes in eastern Germany; a world of beech forests, cornfields
and countless lakes, which receives its visitors with an almost mystical silence. It is a place where one can sit on the shore, look down into the steel-blue depths, and

muse over the secrets lying hidden within. But geology has a sobering explanation as to why Uckermark is dotted with its dozens of lakes, reminiscent of divine
eyes: This landscape of earth and water is the work of the last Ice Age, whose glaciers modelled the Uckermark region. They ground and shaped, formed hills
and carved out hollows, including the many lakes they eventually filled with their meltwater. Chorin Monastery, built in 1258, is another relic of times past. The
entire complex is considered one of the highlights of north-German Brick Gothic, fusing Cistercian and Gothic architectural styles.

The heart and soul of the Republic in Berlin: The Reichstag with its spectacular glass dome has become the symbol of a united Germany, as well as one of the most popular attractions in Berlin. Here, ordinary people can

thirst for life. Some, however, despair of the Berliners’ irreverence, their notorious sense of humour and their steadfast refusal to be ever such a tiny bit subtle. “It
lives there together such an audacious race of men that you will not get very far with delicacy, you have to have hair on your teeth and occasionally be a bit coarse
to keep your head above water”, so wrote the somewhat horrified great poet Goethe about the Berliners. The Berliners have always cultivated their idiosyncratic person-

alities with great success and have not allowed anyone to sway them. They don’t care if they are accused of provincialism and narrow-mindedness, as did the
sharp-tongued writer Kurt Tucholsky, who very bitterly stated that the horizon of the Berliners was nowhere near as expansive as that of their city. And they were to
be emphatically proven right with their pig-headedness. Today, Berlin is not only a metropolis of trendsetters and groundbreakers of the first rank, not only one of
the most popular travel destinations in the world that welcomes millions and millions of tourists every year, it is also Germany’s only cosmopolitan city.

FRANKFURT
The finest skyline of all German cities: The view from the Main River towards the procession of high-rise buildings, dominated by that of the Commerzbank, is particularly impressive at twilight.
No other city in Germany is associated with more clichés than Frankfurt, whether it be “the city of banks”, “the city of drugs” or “the city of poets”. While each contains an element of truth, Frankfurt is much too complex and contradictory for a few keywords to encompass. Because everything that can be said about this city also encompasses the polar opposite.
210 | HESSE
On the one hand, Frankfurt is Germany’s cosmopolitan city; nowhere else do so many people from so many different countries live so peacefully in such a small area. At the same time, Frankfurt is also a place of glowing patriotism, to the extent that some of its locals only leave their ancestral neighbourhood under great sufferance. Of course everything
revolves around money here, but Frankfurt is also home to a great many writers, matched in number only by Berlin. And of course all manner of urban post-war capital offences have been committed here, yet there are also places like the Mainufer – a giant public park. The one thing everyone agrees on, however, is that Frankfurt is an extremely liveable city.
And the best bit is: Behind the view is not hidden the grimace of cold, clinical commerce, but rather a city of a thousand facets, which often have very little to do with earning money.

SOUTHERN BLACK FOREST
The Black Forest is Germany’s most famous forest. Abroad perhaps even more so, it is considered the embodiment of a German pine forest, and a symbol of the Germans’ intense love for their trees. The landscape in this low mountain range is particularly dominated by the Southern Black Forest, where most of its hallmark specialities are made: Black Forest cake

and kirsch cherry brandy, the red pompom hat or “Bollenhut”, the now world-famous cuckoo clocks, and finally, Black Forest ham, which gourmets rate on a par with any Parma ham. For two centuries, Wutach Gorge has been emblematic of a romantic German forest landscape. At the eastern end of the Black Forest highlands, the Wutach cuts
through the rock to depths of 170 m (560 ft), leaving behind a 30-km-long (19-mile) canyon which has inspired painters and poets alike. The only thing the Black Forest cannot brag about is mountains, though it is still a popular destination for hikers, especially the 1,414-m (4,640 ft) Belchen – the fourth highest peak in the Black Forest (left).

GERMANY Portrait of a fascinating country
Germany is a beautiful country. Everyone who’s ever travelled between the Baltic Sea and the Alps knows that. Yet only once you embark on a journey through it with this book do you realize just how overwhelmingly beautiful and unbelievably diverse it truly is. Magnificent photographs take you to the coasts and mountains, to palaces, monasteries and castles, surprising you again and again with astonishing discoveries, hidden treasures, amazing panoramas and moving insights. As such, this book is indeed the perfect declaration of love for a wonderful country.
