a Quiet spOt

We discover this country house in a quiet area. It lies on a slight slope where all you can hear is the wind blowing and the rustle of a few poplars in the distance. ‘To protect itself against the cold it has its back turned to the northwest’, explains Bernard De Clerck, the architect who has restored and enlarged this building with a great deal of sensitivity. ‘The house itself dates from 1833, but architecturally it is still completely eighteenth century’, he points out. On the front there are in fact still archaic block windows with wooden posts, such as you can see in Brueghel’s paintings. But Bernard did revamp the interior a little. ‘Not too much, because I wanted to keep the division into small spaces. When all the doors are open, you have a large living area with the doors acting as a sort of draught-screen during the winter. The doors have been carefully restored, but not repainted.’ Behind the barn you will discover a swimming pond in a terrace made with old stones. During the restoration many old planks and floors were reused. For anything that had to be supplemented or renewed craftsman-made materials were used. For new floors, doors and wooden walls De Clerck had poplars sawn into planks. All walls have been painted with lime paint, using colours inspired by recovered traces of colour. In this way Bernard De Clerck allows the boundaries between then and now to fade. EEN STILLE PLEK We ontdekken dit landelijke huis in een stiltegebied. Het ligt op een lichte glooiing waar je alleen de wind hoort waaien en in de verte ook het ruisen van enkele populieren. ‘Om zich te beschermen tegen de koude staat het met zijn rug naar het noordwesten’, legt Bernard De Clerck uit, de architect die het pand met veel gevoel heeft opgeknapt en verruimd. ‘Het huis zelf dateert van 1833, maar is qua architectuur nog helemaal achttiende-eeuws’, bevestigt hij. Aan de voorgevel zitten er trouwens nog archaïsche blokramen met houten stijlen, zoals je ze ziet op de tableaus van Brueghel. Bernard De Clerck heeft het interieur wel wat herkneed. ‘Maar niet te veel, want ik wilde de indeling met kleine ruimtes behouden. Als alle deuren openstaan, heb je een grote leefruimte waarvan de deuren in de winter als een soort kamerschermen fungeren. De deuren werden zacht hersteld, maar niet opnieuw geschilderd.’ Achter de schuur ontdek je een zwemvijver in een terras met oude stenen. Bij de verbouwing werden veel oude planken en vloeren hergebruikt. Voor alles wat werd aangevuld of

opgeknapt, werden artisanale materialen aangewend. Voor de nieuwe vloeren, deuren en houten wanden liet De Clerck populieren in planken zagen. Alle muren zijn beschilderd met kalkverf waarvan de kleuren geïnspireerd zijn op teruggevonden kleursporen. Zo laat Bernard De Clerck de grens tussen nu en toen vervagen. UN ENDROIT TRÈS TRANQUILLE Cette maison pa ysanne se cache dans une région paisible. Elle se trouve sur une colline basse où on n’entend que le vent et, dans le lointain, le bruissement de quelques peupliers. « Pour la protéger du froid, on l’a construite tournant le dos au nord-ouest », explique Bernard De Clerck, l’architecte qui l’a rénovée et agrandie avec sensibilité. « Le bâtiment date de 1833, mais se rattache complètement au XVIIIe siècle en ce qui concerne l’architecture », confirme-t-il. « La façade présente des fenêtres à carreaux et croisillons en bois comme on les voit sur les tableaux de Brueghel. Bernard De Clerck a pas mal remodelé l’intérieur. « Mais pas trop, car je voulais conserver la division en petites pièces. En ouvrant toutes les portes, on obtient un grand espace à vivre ; l’hiver, ces portes constituent des sortes de paravents. Elles ont été délicatement réparées, mais pas repeintes. Derrière la grange, un étang de baignade a été intégré dans une terrasse de vieilles pierres. Beaucoup de planches et de sols anciens ont été réutilisés lors des transformations. Pour tout ce qui a été complété ou rafraîchi, on a utilisé des matériaux de facture artisanale. Pour les nouveaux sols, portes et lambris, De Clerck a fait scier du peuplier. L’ensemble des murs a été revêtu de peinture à la chaux dont les teintes ont été inspirées par les traces de couleur retrouvées sur place, une façon d’estomper la frontière entre éléments nouveaux et parties anciennes.

This monumental residence is 27 metres long, 9 metres wide and more than 4 metres high. Inside, the open view is hardly disturbed, you can look right through the whole thing. You enter the residence from the carport. By using split levels, the height is decreased. The designer dislikes homes with separate rooms, and prefers an open living space. The sitting area is at the front, the sleeping area is at the back to the right, the wet cell is to the left of that, and the cooking area is to the far left. Deze monumentale woning is 27 meter lang, 9 meter breed en boven 4 meter hoog. Binnenin wordt het zicht amper verstoord, je kijkt er dwars doorheen. Je komt de woning via de carport binnen. Door de splitlevels wordt de totale hoogte beperkt. De ontwerper houdt niet van kamerwoningen en verkiest een open leefruimte, met vooraan de zithoek, achteraan rechts de slaaphoek, links daarvan de natte cel en helemaal links de kookhoek. Cette habitation monumentale mesure 27 mètres de long, 9 mètres de large et plus de 4 mètres de haut. À l’intérieur, la vue est à peine entravée tant la transparence est grande. On entre via le carport. L’usage de demi-niveaux a permis de limiter la hauteur totale. L’architecte n’aime pas les maisons cloisonnées, auxquelles il préfère les espaces de vie ouverts. Ici, le salon est à l’avant, la chambre au fond à droite, la salle de bains à sa gauche et le coin cuisine à l’extrême gauche.

It is fascinating to discover that Leo’s colours overflow from his paintings on to the walls and floors. Just look at the red landscape above the sofa. Leo not only has a Chinese room painted in slightly erotic shades, but also a blue reception room, a country-style kitchen and a spacious studio. His bedroom is, however, completely white. Leo gained his name and fame in Belgium and the Netherlands by painting splendid settings for well-known decorators. He himself actually comes from an old family of ornamental painters.

Het is boeiend om te zien hoe de kleuren van Leo’s schilderijen overlopen op de wanden en de vloeren. Kijk maar naar het rode landschap boven de canapé. Leo heeft niet alleen een Chinese kamer die licht erotisch is getint, maar ook een blauwe ontvangstsalon, een landelijke keuken en een riant schildersatelier. Zijn slaapkamer is echter helemaal wit. Leo verwierf naam en faam in België en Nederland met het schilderen van prachtige decors voor vermaarde interieurarchitecten. Hij stamt trouwens uit een oud geslacht van decoratieschilders.

La façon dont Leo utilise les couleurs est surprenante, que ce soit dans ses oeuvres ou sur ses murs et sur ses sols. Observez le paysage rouge qui surmonte le canapé. Leo a non seulement teinté de bleu une chambre chinoise à l’ambiance sensuelle, il a aussi créé un salon de réception, une cuisine campagnarde et un agréable atelier de peintre. Sa chambre est en revanche entièrement blanche. Leo s’est fait un nom en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas en peignant de splendides décors pour des décorateurs renommés. Il vient lui-même d’une ancienne famille de peintres décorateurs

‘The creation of this house was a good exercise for me,’ says architect Nathalie Vervenne. From a cheerless terrace house she has made a spacious home, enjoying distant views and an east-west orientation. In the morning the sun is in the kitchen, in the evening in the living room on the street side. The house has been enlarged by demolishing a number of internal walls, creating a half-open living space from front door to back door. However, this is not an open loft, but an articulated space, with nooks and crannies creating pleasant spots. For instance, there is now an office where there used to be an ‘upper’ room, on a slightly higher level. It was also an exercise in creating as high a quality as possible within a limited budget. The finish of the interior is modern, angular and rough. Nathalie likes building materials with a texture, such as a poured concrete floor and lime-washed walls. ‘Here nothing is smooth or even, but everything is a little rough and hence decidedly rural,’ according to the designer. The central kitchen has been accommodated in the former barn. The baking oven stayed in place and is used for baking pizzas. The cooking island is also of rough concrete. The house is furnished with rustic furniture and some vintage design. Even the dark bedroom has a contemporary look. Natalie restores old houses in a rural style and also designs newly built houses in the same vein. TEXTUREN OP WANDEN EN VLOEREN ‘Voor mij was de creatie van deze woning een mooie oefening’, zegt architect Nathalie Vervenne. Van een somber rijhuis maakte ze een ruime woning, die geniet van de vergezichten en de oost-westoriëntatie. ’s Morgens komt de zon binnen in de keuken, ’s avonds in de woonkamer aan de straatzijde. Het huis werd verruimd door het afbreken van een aantal binnenwanden, waardoor er een halfopen woonruimte ontstond van de voor- tot achterdeur. Dit is echter geen open loft, maar een gearticuleerde ruimte met hoekjes en kantjes die voor gezellige plekken zorgen. Zo is er nu een bureau waar vroeger de opkamer was. Het was ook een oefening om met een beperkt budget zoveel mogelijk kwaliteit te creëren. De afwerking van het interieur is modern, hoekig en ruw. Nathalie houdt van bouwmaterialen met een textuur, zoals een betonnen gietvloer en gekalkte wanden. ‘Hier is niets gaaf of vlak, maar alles ietwat ruw en daardoor uitgesproken landelijk’, aldus de ontwerpster. De centrale keuken werd ondergebracht in de vroegere schuur. De bakoven bleef staan en wordt gebruikt om

pizza in te bakken. Ook het kookeiland is van ruw beton. De woning is gestoffeerd met landelijke meubels en wat vintage design. Zelfs de donkere slaapkamer heeft een hedendaagse uitstraling. Nathalie verbouwt oude woningen in een landelijke stijl en ontwerpt ook nieuwe panden in dezelfde geest. JEU DE TEXTURES POUR LES MURS ET LES SOLS « Pour moi, ce projet a représenté un bel exercice », affirme l’architecte Nathalie Vervenne. D’une sombre maison de rangée, elle a fait une habitation spacieuse, jouissant de vues sur le lointain et d’une orientation est-ouest. Le matin, le soleil éclaire la cuisine, le soir, il illumine le séjour, côté rue. La maison a été agrandie grâce à la démolition de quelques murs intérieurs, ce qui a permis de créer un séjour semiouvert reliant porte avant et porte arrière. Ce n’est toutefois pas un loft, mais un espace articulé avec des recoins qui procurent de l’intimité. Cela a aussi été un véritable exercice de créer autant de qualité que possible avec un budget limité. Les finitions sont modernes, anguleuses et rêches. Nathalie aime les matériaux qui ont une texture, comme les sols de béton coulé et les murs chaulés. « Ici, rien n’est plane ou lisse, tout a un petit côté rugueux et, donc, résolument rustique », explique la créatrice. La cuisine centrale a été aménagée dans l’ancienne grange. Le four d’origine a été conservé et sert désormais à cuire des pizzas. L’îlot est également en béton brut. L’habitation a été habillée de meubles campagnards et d’un peu de design vintage. Même la chambre sombre possède un rayonnement contemporain. Nathalie transforme d’anciennes habitations dans le style rustique et crée de nouveaux bâtiments dans le même esprit.

Above we find ourselves in the mediaeval room of the building, with the centuries-old fire place as focal point. This is the dining room where guests are received. The abstract painting in the background comes from the ’60s. To the right we see the walls of the downstairs room, painted with diamond patterns. This wall decoration is inspired by a historic décor from a mansion in Damme. To the right we walk through the office with a constructivistic painting by Jacqy duVal on the wall.

Hierboven vertoeven we in de middeleeuwse kamer van het pand, met als blikvanger de eeuwenoude schouw. Dit is de eetkamer waar gasten worden ontvangen. Het abstracte schilderij op de achtergrond stamt uit de jaren ’60. Rechts zien we de met diamantpatronen beschilderde wanden van de benedenkamer. Deze wanddecoratie is geïnspireerd op een historisch decor uit een herenhuis in Damme. Rechts lopen we door het bureau met aan de muur een constructivistisch schilderij van Jacqy duVal.

En haut, nous sommes dans la chambre médiévale, dominée par une très vieille cheminée. C’est aussi la salle à manger où les hôtes sont reçus. La toile abstraite du mur du fond date des années 1960. À droite, nous apercevons les murs peints à motif de diamant de la chambre inférieure. Cette décoration murale s’inspire d’un patron ancien vu dans une maison de maître de Damme. Dans le bureau, sur la droite, le mur est orné d’une peinture constructiviste de Jacqy duVal.

Furniture designer Filip Janssens lives in a large open space with kitchen, work area, lounge and dining area, the different parts of which are partly separated off by selfdesigned cupboards. In the middle of this room is a two-storey modular cupboard composed of separate boxes that can be moved around. This cupboard is conceived like a building. But the small cabinet next to it also has a high architectural content. Meubelontwerper Filip Janssens leeft in een grote open ruimte met kookhoek, werkhoek, zithoek en eethoek, waarvan de onderdelen deels door zelf ontworpen kasten worden gescheiden. Midden in deze ruimte staat een twee verdiepingen hoge modulaire kast, opgebouwd uit aparte verplaatsbare dozen. Deze kast is echt bedacht als een gebouw. Maar ook de kleine kast ernaast heeft een hoog architectuurgehalte. Le créateur de mobilier Filip Janssens vit dans un grand espace ouvert avec un coin cuisine, un coin de travail, un coin salon et salle à manger, dont les différentes parties se trouvent partiellement séparées par des armoires créées par lui. Au milieu de l’espace s’élève une armoire modulaire sur deux étages, composée de boîtes distinctes qu’il est possible de déplacer. Si la construction est réellement conçue comme un édifice, la petite armoire à côté possède également un niveau architectural très élevé.
