As a true visionary with the timeless human desire to create imaginative metaphors of the human psyche through representation of the body, each bronze by Richard MacDonald is part of an enduring legacy that brings figurative sculpture into the 21st century.

DANIEL GERHARTZ

MARY PETTIS

Drawing upon her classical, alla prima, and plein air training, Mary Pettis’ work stands on the cutting edge of the International Contemporary Realism movement. Pettis has won awards at national and international painting events and exhibitions from New York City to Scottsdale and Maui to Barcelona. In 2017, Pettis became the ninth American woman painter to receive the designation ARC Living Master from the Art Renewal Center. She is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society (AIS), the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA), and the Oil Painters of America (OPA). Her art has taken her to the far corners of the world: China, Russia, and much of Europe. She has exhibited widely, including at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland; and collectors of her work reach around the globe. Pettis divides her time equally between the studio and outdoors. Her decades of training and the experience gathered from hundreds of plein air paintings are a catalyst for a symbolic visual language of expression that celebrates the beauty, dignity and worth of this world and its inhabitants. Mary and her husband Randy live along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in Minnesota.

Daniel Gerhartz is an ARC Living Master and has been featured in numerous publications, including the hardbound book Creative Oil Painting: Techniques from 15 Master Painters by Stephen Doherty. His teaching credentials include the Scottsdale Institute, and his work is included in the permanent collection of the West Bend Art Museum in Wisconsin and the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama. Gerhartz also won Best of Show in the 1st International ARC Salon Competition in 2004. He is one of the few living realists to successfully penetrate the secondary market, with works selling at important auction houses, including Sotheby’s.

This year, the International ARC Salon was juried by several members of our prestigious ARC Board of Judges, as well as some special guest jurors (four jurors per category). We have made sure to include jurors in each category who have specialized knowledge in the field they are adjudicating. In

2020 - Oil on canvas - 121.92 x 76.2 cm | 48 x 30 in

“The painting depicts my daughter, Ava, dressed in an assortment of athletic gear and posing with vintage boxing gloves as she defiantly stares down the viewer with a challenging gaze. The ambiguously spare background is intended to focus the attention on the boxer and create a monumental effect.

enormous leather mittens. Ava’s fighting spirit was keenly awakened once the gloves were laced up. She naturally struck poses exhibiting an indomitable confidence and unwavering conviction. This arrangement offers an alternate view of the modern young women, upending traditional roles often imposed by social or cultural conventions.

My wife found the heavily worn boxing gloves in a small-town antique store as we traveled home from a family trip, which happened to be near Muhammad Ali’s hometown. She thought they would make the perfect centerpiece for a portrait. The gloves were immediately put to use in the studio as my daughter and young nephew posed with these

The title ‘Spartan’ is inspired by a brand of boxing equipment, used by the great classic fighters, from Joe Louis to Ali. The name also evokes the feared warrior race of Classical Greece. It is a word which perfectly embodies the fighting spirit of all the women who live here in my humble Virginia home.”

“Girl with a Gun”

2019 - Oil and tempera on canvas - 100 x 90 cm | 39 ¼ x 35 ¼ in

“A young girl, almost a child, sits on the floor, squeezing into the corner of the wall. She is holding a heavy Soviet TT – a pistol from the Second World War, still appreciated by modern bandits – and her finger is on the trigger. There is no hatred in her strained eyes, black as coal, but rather a request to leave her alone. Her left hand lies limp on top of her strained right; she is not ready to shoot … not yet. Where does the weapon in her small hands come from? Who is her

gaze directed at? Who stands in the place of the viewer? The answers to these questions will be different for each viewer. ‘Pictures are bits of life,’ as Sitka Charley, Jack London’s Native American character, used to say. You don’t know what happened before the instant captured in this painting, nor can you anticipate what will happen next. You can only see ‘the now’ - a moment frozen in time, as if caught in amber.”

This award was chosen by the magazine’s editor-inchief, Peter Trippi, and publisher, B. Eric Rhoads. PLEINAIR MAGAZINE AWARD One artist who paints en plein air was chosen for a feature article about their artwork in PleinAir magazine, the bestselling art magazine in Barnes & Noble stores nationwide. Collections Magazine was named China’s most influential journal in 60 years and was nominated three times for the National Journal Award. This award was selected by the magazine’s editor-inchief, Yinglun Ji. ENCHANTED LIVING MAGAZINE AWARD Enchanted Living, formally known as Faerie Magazine, is a quarterly print magazine that celebrates all things enchanted – from a scattering of mushrooms in an ancient forest to a sweet, scented gown made only of roses. The New York Times described it this way: “It’s as though Martha Stewart’s Living and Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene had a magazine baby.” Founded by artist and visionary Kim Cross in 2005 and helmed by novelist Carolyn Turgeon since 2013, the magazine is a feast for the senses. Every issue features exquisite photography, recipes, original fiction, and poetry, as well as travel pieces, artist profiles, home decor, otherworldly beauty tips, craft tutorials, and much more – with a dash of enchantment sprinkled throughout. Plein Air Painting Category – Finalists

Plein Air Painting Category – First Place Winner

Plein Air Painting Category Plein air painting is about painting on-site and creating beautiful scenes fully from life in a natural setting. Its origins started centuries ago as a way to capture color and light, and works created with this method were often used by artists as reference sketches when creating academic studio works. However, this style of painting took on a life of its own, becoming a favorite of the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, married with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel, allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air”. Although this category is most often associated with landscape paintings, figurative works that were also painted en plein air are encouraged in this category.

“Backlit Roses” 2019 Oil on linen panel - 50.8 x 40.64 cm | 20 x 16 in

“This large plein air painting was created over the course of 5 evenings. I was initially captivated by how the farm seemed to tumble down the hillside, but once I got my bearings and realized how the setting sun would light them up, everything was organized around my anticipation

of the evening light. Each evening deepened my understanding of the light, subject, and setting. Locals stopped to visit; some checked my progress each night, others to share their version of how the place became abandoned.”

“This is painted in the summer on the back deck of our studios, looking west, late in the day. The roses were clipped from a bush growing next to my studio. It was a tricky piece: a slight breeze kept me worried that my set up would completely change. It hung on for me, but memory

played a part with the changing shapes and changing light. I found it very stimulating to combine the rich color of the roses with the more subdued landscape.”

Fine art at its best has the power to move one to tears, or grab your sensibilities and rivet you in the moment with an overwhelming sense of beauty and excitement. It may be the rare work that accomplishes this, but for those who have had this experience, many have credited it as the stimulus that set them on a personal lifetime quest: whether as an artist, collector, art historian or avid art lover. The vocabulary of International Realism is unique in one important way: it can be understood by all people everywhere on earth, regardless of what language they speak or write, capturing important events, experiences and emotions, and conveying an understanding of our shared humanity. Thus, International Realism is a universal language that enables communication with all people, past, present, and future. The International ARC Salon is the largest, most influential and far-reaching competition in the world for 21st Century Realism. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational foundation, the Art Renewal Center is dedicated to promoting skill-based techniques in the visual arts. These are well represented in this book, which is dedicated to the winners and finalists of our 15th competition.
