Introduction I’m not a photographer. But I take photographs. I’m a man with a job. I type things. Sometimes I write things. If I go to the office, I carr y a camera. If I go to the grocer y store, I carr y a camera. If I go for a walk in the sideways light, I carr y a camera. It goes around my neck. People assume I’m a tourist. I’m from Michigan? I’m from Ohio? People ask me what I take pictures of and I usually say light and loneliness. I annoy myself. It sounds like some fancy dodge. But it’s true. I love a person now. Still, this is New York. Still full of all this beautiful light and loneliness. —Craig Bagno

“ If the metropolis occupies a special place in the collective American imagination, it no doubt owes a debt to the photographers whose images captured the architecture, the humanity, and the unceasing swirl of life that animates the nation’s largest city.” —Artsy
Craig Bagno doesn’t claim to be a photographer, yet for over a decade, he has captured the transience of lights and shadows on the restless streets of New York City. Stylistically photographed from behind and frequently obscured by the shadows, Bagno’s anonymous subjects—as archetypes rather than individuals—intimate a sense of solitude and stillness that lurks beneath the spectacle of the city. Bagno’s publishing debut New York City Anonymous provides an alternative perspective on the city of dreams, unveiling a slower, quieter, and more poignant New York City for visitors and residents alike.
